Back in June, local band Chewing Gum celebrated their EP “Possum” with a show at Easy Street Records. It wasn’t available via streaming at the time, but it is now, and local record label The Big Dark wants to invite you to celebrate – Chewing Gum will play a set of the album’s songs Monday night (September 14) at Hiawatha Community Center (2700 California SW). From the invitation:

… All ages are welcome and encouraged. Parents, bring your kids – let them witness some girls rocking out. Kids, bring your ‘rents – they deserve a good time too. We’ve heard that grandparents love Chewing Gum, bring them too.

This is a free event to celebrate the streaming release of the EP. Come for a short performance, merch giveaways, and snacks. Meet the band. Meet a new friend. Pay homage to the woman tree and watch these young women. All the cool kids will be there, and you are a cool kid (or kid at heart), right?

FERRIES: Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth returns to three-boat service Monday

After a week of two-boat service on Washington State Ferries‘ Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth “Triangle Route,” it’s going back to three boats tomorrow. M/V Sealth – shown above in sea trials we noted Thursday – is done with maintenance and repairs and is joining the route as the #3 vessel (M/V Kittitas is #1, M/V Kitsap is #2). But full three-boat service will just last a few weeks; WSF reminds riders that the Kittitas’s scheduled maintenance starts in early October – no specific date – and while it’s out, the Triangle Route will be on “two-boat service with a third, unscheduled vessel.”

UPDATE: Tree down on Beach Drive

3 PM: Just in via police radio, a tree is reported down across the northbound lane in the 5900 block of Beach Drive SW [map]. The dispatcher told officers SDOT has been notified; avoid the area for a while.

3:25 PM: Reader photo added above (thank you!). They report, “Tree crew just arrived on scene.”

6:55 PM: Hadn’t heard any updates, so we just went down to look. Tree crew still on scene, blocking most of the NB lane, no flagger, so be careful.

UPDATE: Pole fire leads to power outage for 200+ on Puget Ridge

12:39 PM: A reported fire atop a power pole has left nine homes without power and brought an emergency response blocking 21st SW in the 5900 block [map], in an area where there are few outlets. Avoid the area for a while.

1:17 PM: SPD officers who were helping with traffic control just told dispatch the road is open and they’re leaving. City Light is reported to be on scene.

2:11 PM: Now the SCL outage map shows more than 200 homes out. Added a screenshot above. The map categorizes the cause as “environmental.” (We’ll follow up with SCL tomorrow for something more detailed.)

2:38 PM: Nearby resident reports a new pole just went by on a flatbed (photo above), so repairs might take a while longer.

UPDATE: Rescue response for crash on westbound West Seattle Bridge

10:08 AM: SFD and SPD are responding to what’s described as a “rollover” crash near the west end of the westbound West Weattle Bridge, with one person trapped, updates to come. The entire westbound bridge is blocked at the scene, and they’re diverting westbound traffic onto the Admiral Way exit.

10:15 AM: Police describe the crash location as “near the statues.” SFD says they’ve gotten the person out of the vehicle and that they’re “in stable condition.”

10:20 AM: The westbound lanes are reopening.

11:16 AM: We drove the eastbound bridge to verify the crash location. The vehicle already was being towed; all the activity was indeed at the pullout by Walking on Logs.

2:25 PM: SFD tells WSB that the driver is a 62-year-old woman who did not require hospitalization.

UPDATE: Apartment fire in Highland Park

2:26 AM: Seattle Fire has a big callout headed for the 600 block of SW Kenyon [map]. Updates to come.

2:29 AM: SFD says the fire’s in a second-floor apartment and they’re working to extinguish it.

2:32 AM: Firefighters say they have the fire under control. No injuries reported.

2:54 AM: SFD says the fire’s out, and the cause is under investigation.

2:35 PM: SFD says they’re still investigating. We also asked if damage had gone beyond the one apartment where the fire started; SFD says no, “but there was reported water damage to the unit below.”
