2:21 PM: Thanks for the tip. The Seattle Public Utilities water-trouble map confirms emergency repairs are under way at California/Juneau; our tipster says one lane is blocked. We’re headed down the hill for a look.

2:43 PM: The problem is on the northbound side of California, north of Juneau. Traffic’s getting by both ways using the southbound side.

4:57 PM: SPU says water service in the area has been restored, adding in response to our followup questions:

SPU received calls around 12:30 p.m. about the incident at California Avenue Southwest and Southwest Juneau Street. SPU dispatched a response crew, which arrived about 20 minutes later. The crew determined the break involved a 12-inch cast iron pipe and turned off water around 1:10 p.m. to make repairs in the residential and business area. The cause of the break is unknown.

11:30 PM: Thanks to Corey for the photos. Toward the center of the photo above you can see that one driver went through a fence. We haven’t heard anything further about the status of the person initially reported to be getting CPR.

ADDED MONDAY AFTERNOON: SFD says two people were treated, neither with life-threatening injuries:

-40-year-old male who was in stable condition. He was transported to Harborview via AMR.

-50-year-old female in stable condition. She was transported to a hospital via AMR.

TRAFFIC ALERT: West Seattle low bridge reopens early

(Screenshot from low-bridge SDOT camera, post-reopening)

Since last time we checked, the West Seattle low bridge has reopened to all surface traffic after weekend repairs that originally were expected to run as late as 10 pm tonight. We’ll be following up with SDOT tomorrow re: how the repairs went and if any other closures are ahead.

FOLLOWUP: Admiral Way Bridge work to be ‘mostly done’ within a week, SDOT says

(WSB photo, July 2024)

Quick update from SDOT on the Admiral Way Bridges work, one week after our previous update – spokesperson Mariam Ali messaged us this morning to say, “Just wanted to give you a heads up that we should be mostly done with this project by Labor Day.” Does that include Fairmount Avenue reopening beneath the bridge? She said yes. As our photo above shows, the original projection for that reopening was six months ago; SDOT says scope expansion, such as added painting, stretched out the timeline for the project.

UPDATE: West Seattle low bridge reopens after hours of being ‘stuck’

5:01 PM: There’s no formal traffic alert about it yet but the low bridge is closed for surface traffic – bicycle traffic in particular is backing up – and a texter says it’s been closed for more than 20 minutes. We’re checking with SDOT.

5:09 PM: Just got this reply, “There is an issue and maintenance in the way. Don’t know ETA on reopening and what the issue is. It is stuck.” It was already set to be shut down all next weekend (starting at 7 am Saturday, August 23) for work to repair a part that SDOT explains “controls how fast the bridge opens.”

5:19 PM: The live camera shows the bicyclists are going around the bridge gates. Not an option for the motor-vehicle drivers, who are turning around to leave the bridge.

6:40 PM: Not fixed yet and no ETA from SDOT yet.

9:40 PM: Open again. We’ll follow up tomorrow on the cause.

UTILITY-WORK ALERT: Lane closure on southbound 35th SW

Thanks to Cindi for the pic and tip. We don’t know how much longer they’ll be there, but a utility crew has blocked off the outside southbound lane of 35th just past Findlay and is working in a hole in the street. That’s several blocks north of where the street becomes one lane each way, so give yourself extra time if you’re heading that way.
