YOU CAN HELP: Senior Center of West Seattle takes ‘Joy Is in the Journey’ online

(WSB file photo)

The Senior Center of West Seattle invites you to help its work continue via a pandemic-style event – here’s the announcement:

Joy Is in the Journey is the Senior Center of West Seattle’s biggest annual fundraiser. Instead of attending an in-person event this year, the community is invited to help raise $100,000 by making an online donation. All donations made before Sept. 29 will be matched up to $20,200, thanks to a generous local donor. So far, the event has raised $52,000.

Then join fellow supporters in an interactive, live virtual event on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The event will include entertainment, activity demonstrations and updates live from the Senior Center.

All donations fund the Senior Center, a fun and vibrant social gathering place in the heart of the West Seattle Junction. Gifts also support the essential services the Senior Center has been providing vulnerable seniors during this pandemic, including meals, grocery delivery, social worker outreach and phone counseling.

We are all on this journey together. Join us in supporting our community’s seniors!

Tuesday, Sept. 29
8-8:45 a.m. with virtual doors opening at 7:30 a.m.

To participate in the live event, make a donation at app.mobilecause.com/vf/2020Journey before Sept. 29.

‘Walking from Canada to Florida to fight suicide’ – in one day

Ken King invites you to join him this Saturday in West Seattle:

I am walking from Canada to Florida to fight suicide.

You are welcome to join us on our 5-mile walk around Alki Beach on Saturday, Sept. 26th, 10:00 am.

This is a five-mile walk around Alki Beach, from SW Canada Drive & Beach Dr. SW, to SW Florida St. & Harbor Ave. SW. Each mile represents one year from when our son Simon died from suicide.

I want to commemorate Simon’s life by participating in the Seattle, Washington Out of the Darkness Walk, an event that raises money for suicide prevention research, education, survivor and awareness programs. I will be among hundreds of thousands of people walking in more than 300 cities across the country to send a message of hope to the world.

I am walking in the Out of the Darkness Walk, to raise awareness and let people know it is OK to talk about suicide and mental illness. I want to do my part to prevent this tragedy from happening in other families.

To help make a difference, you can click this link to visit my personal fundraising webpage and donate online. I encourage you to share this letter with other people who may want to lend their support as well.

That link goes to a social-media page but you can also donate via this page on the open web.

HELPING: Got a bicycle you don’t need? Donation drive with West Seattle dropoff

If you have a no-longer-needed bicycle, here’s a chance to get it to someone who can use it:

350 Seattle is organizing a bike collection drive in collaboration with Bike Works now through September 26! We’re hoping to collect 200 bikes.

Why does this matter right now? Bikes provide pandemic-safe, low-cost, and climate-friendly transportation for essential workers and other people across Seattle. But right now, they’re in short supply; bike sales have soared, and many shops only have expensive bikes left. This means that many of the people that need them most can’t get their hands on them. Each year, Bike Works fixes up thousands of bikes and distributes them across Southeast Seattle. Through bike giveaways and youth programs, Bike Works aims to make cycling accessible, affordable, and welcoming to people of all backgrounds, abilities, and incomes.

What are the logistics? We’re hosting drop-off sites in West Seattle, South Seattle, Capitol Hill, Magnolia, Phinney Ridge, Ballard, the U-District, Northeast Seattle, and Woodinville on Saturday, September 26 (and most of the sites will also be open the week before). To donate follow this link, and someone will contact you with more information about where to drop off your bikes or bike gear: http://bit.ly/350SBikeDrive. And, please feel free to share this form with friends, family, and neighbors that have bikes or bike gear to donate.

Thanks to Cynthia, who’s hosting the West Seattle dropoff, for letting us know! Once you send in the form, you’ll hear back, and she’s taking dropoffs between 7:30 am and 7:30 pm all week.

YOU CAN HELP: Concord PTA’s weekend yard sale to help families with rent and utilities

We’re continuing to spotlight ways to help neighbors affected by the pandemic, as well as ways to get help. This weekend, if you’re able to help, you can do it by shopping a big yard sale in South Park, coordinated by the Concord International Elementary PTA:

This weekend, September 19-20 [noon-6 pm both days], we are hosting a fundraiser to raise money for rent and utility assistance for Concord Elementary School families in the South Park neighborhood.

75% of Concord Elementary families live below the poverty line and many have not qualified for unemployment benefits during this pandemic.

During our last fundraiser yard sale in July, we raised just under $10,000, and every penny went to rent and utility assistance for our most vulnerable neighbors.

Here’s more background on the school and the PTA’s work to help families and students. The sale address is 8507 14th Avenue S., just west of the bridge – here’s a map.

YOU CAN HELP: Flower fundraiser to help farming families

(Photo courtesy Hmong Association of Washington)

Need some more brightness after all these smoke-hazed days? Beautiful flowers like that can help – but they don’t just magically appear at local markets. They are grown on small farms. And like so many, those farmers have been hard-hit in these times. So they’re having a flower fundraiser, with online orders through tomorrow, and a Saturday pickup spot in White Center. Explains Cynthia Yongvang of the Hmong Association of Washington, who emailed to let us know abut this: “Our fundraiser would benefit both the Hmong flower farmers who are struggling financially during this pandemic and also our 4 very small communities (Mien, Hmong, Khmu, and Lao) in the Puget Sound area by providing rental-assistance relief to families in need so that they won’t be displaced during this time.” The order form is here, and it explains, “This weekend, based on the farmers’ selection of flowers, the mix bouquets will include sunflowers, dahlias, lilies, phlox, statice , snapdragons, gladiolus and greenery for $25, with $10 of every bouquet going to our rental assistance program.” Orders will be accepted until 3 pm tomorrow (Thursday, September 17th), with pickup options (also listed on the order form) including 9 am-noon Saturday in White Center.

HELPING: Pencil Me In For Kids success!

(Sue Lindblom of Illusions Hair Design and Deena Knapton, Staples manager, with some of the donated supplies)

Thanks to everyone who helped out with this year’s Pencil Me In For Kids school-supply drive! Tonight, a report on its community-powered success:

As school started, Pencil Me In For Kids (PMIFK) swung into action. Members of the Rotary Club of West Seattle delivered boxes and boxes of pencils, markers, colored pencils and other basic supplies to six West Seattle elementary schools this week.

Monies for the purchase of the materials came from numerous sources including the Rotary Club of West Seattle. Individuals made donations via Fauntleroy Church and Illusions Hair Design.

Staples of Westwood Village accepted donations of items at their store for the last several months and offered at cost prices to PMIFK. This allowed PMIFK to purchase items valued at almost $10,000 for less than $4,000. Staples has been an active partner for several years.

PMIFK was started in 1994 by Sue Lindblom of Illusions Hair Design. The founding concept was that grade school is the time to build self-esteem and that it’s important to fit. Hence the organization provides supplies for at-need children. Learn more about PMIFK here.

As we reported a month ago, an online donation fund was part of PMIFK this year too.

TASTE OF WEST SEATTLE: Here’s who’s participating in this year’s 5-day version

As previously mentioned, it’s a new format for this year’s Taste of West Seattle – the first since previous beneficiary West Seattle Helpline merged with the West Seattle Food Bank – instead of one event, it’s five days of special menu items at participating food and drink establishments! The latest list of participants is in this update from WSFB:

Enjoy food and drink from your favorite local participating establishments September 20th-24th and support your neighbors!

Presented by Metropolitan Market, the 2020 Taste of West Seattle will have participating eateries and drinkeries donating a percentage of sales of special Taste Menu items back to the West Seattle Food Bank to support our neighbors. From Sunday, September 20th to Thursday, September 24th you can dine in or get takeout and enjoy delicious food and drink from some of West Seattle’s favorite spots!

Eat, drink, support local, and have fun! All participating eateries will be listed on a Taste Passport (available at participating eateries). The more stamps you get on your Passport by ordering from participating businesses, the more drawings you are entered to win. After the Taste of West Seattle ends, mail your Passport to the West Seattle Food Bank or drop it off at participating eateries by October 16th to be entered to win. The grand prize is a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines!

The Taste of West Seattle has always been about bringing neighbors together, promoting local eateries and drinkeries, and strengthening our wonderful West Seattle community. Now, more than ever, we see the importance of coming together (safely) to support each other.

We hope you join us for the Taste of West Seattle!

YOU CAN HELP: How to be part of a benefit golf tournament without golfing

 |   How to help | West Seattle news | WS & Sports

Tomorrow, a benefit tournament at the West Seattle Golf Course will pay tribute to a longtime West Seattleite, and you can participate without golfing or even going to the course. Sally Hardwick explains:

We are having a charity golf tournament to benefit the West Seattle Food Bank this Thursday, September 10th, in honor of Don Bereiter, who recently passed away from cancer. Don was well-known and loved in the West Seattle community, where he was the managing broker at Prudential NW Real Estate (later Berkshire Hathaway) and most recently our branch manager at Windermere in the West Seattle Junction.

Don will be remembered for his sense of humor and eagerness to help others. Golf was one of his passions, and he was a big part of this tournament in years past—it will be a wonderful way to celebrate a truly great man!

Michael Mallagh (Windermere) and Stephanie Quam (Old Republic Home Protection) are the driving forces (pardon the pun) in getting this put together at the last minute. We were all in shock after Don’s passing in July and almost couldn’t get this on the books but I think it will be a big success despite it being hastily organized! We already have all 18 holes sponsored, and nearly a full course of golfers.

Raffle tickets are still available! 100% of the proceeds from the Golf Tournament and Raffle will be presented to the West Seattle Food Bank and our friends at Pepsi will match all contributions made! Raffle Tickets can be purchased and are $10 each … and you do not have to be present to win; you will be notified if you have one of the lucky tickets drawn on the 10th!

Raffle Tickets & Donations: @Michael-Mallagh (Venmo) or michaelmallagh@gmail.com (PayPal)…personal / company check is fine too (made out to Michael Mallagh) – donation receipt will be sent. Contact event organizers Michael Mallagh (mallagh@windermere.com 206-501-5600), Stephanie Quam (stephanieq@orhp.com 425-691-8768) or Sally Hardwick (sally@windermere.com 206-795-9097).

Even with school starting remotely for most local students, supplies are still needed, and as we’ve noted before, that means fundraisers are too. The Genesee Hill Elementary PTA invites the community to be part of a tasty fundraiser it’s planning next Wednesday (September 9th):

Join us to eat ice cream at a distance!

Buy an ice cream cone from the Full Tilt Truck while it’s across the street from Genesee Hill. $6 per cone, with part of each sale going to the GHE PTA Supply Drive. All are welcome!

Check out the new GHE swag samples when you stop by!

Wear a mask. Social distancing guidelines will be followed. Vegan option available.

The truck will be at 50th & Dakota, 3-6 pm that day. Looks like ice-cream weather – could be in the 90s!

The next outdoor (and distanced) donation drive at Alki UCC, collecting food and more, is tomorrow (Sunday, August 30), 10 am-3 pm:

Feeding hungry kids is our focus this summer. In addition to regular contributions of non-perishable food and other items, special requests include fruit cups and rollups, gogurt, peanut butter and jelly, protein bars, mac and cheese, cereal, noodles, and pasta/sauce.

Toilet paper, diapers (all sizes), Similac formula, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, and baby wipes are always welcome.

Donations are distributed through the White Center Food Bank. Next month’s Sunday Food Drives are September 13 and 27.

The church is at 6115 SW Hinds.

All-volunteer Seattle Emergency Communications Hub Network has a first-ever request

For more than a decade, we’ve been reporting on West Seattle’s Emergency Communications Hubs – community-powered operations that, if we’re lucky, we’ll never need – places you would go in case of major catastrophe, if regular communication channels were disrupted. West Seattle was a leader in hub creation, and it’s now a citywide program. Right now that program is crowdfunding for the first time to cover its fairly nominal operation costs. Longtime local preparedness leader Cindi Barker sent the announcement:

The Seattle Emergency Communications Hub Network is an ALL-VOLUNTEER force dedicated to helping Seattle communities prepare for a disaster. We work closely with City of Seattle officials, are incorporated into the response plan, but choose to remain independent of formal city control. This allows us to remain nimble and respond to our communities as the unique entities that they are. Currently, we have nearly 60 Emergency Communication Hubs throughout Seattle where trained neighbors will gather to help organize and support their communities after a large disaster.

We continue to focus on skill training and education of our existing hubs and we are determined to increase our outreach to communities of color, to non-English speakers, and to those with accessibility or economic challenges. This has been an exciting time as we navigate new paths and learn how to reach out to all communities with sensitivity. More on that in the near future but for now, we are turning to the community for support.

Hub Volunteers have shouldered our operating expenses for fourteen years. For the first time ever, we are asking our supporters to cover our expenses for the next two years as we migrate to a more sustainable business model. It isn’t a large amount – $5,500. Our network costs include website maintenance, videoconferencing capabilities, translation services to engage more Seattle residents, and multi-language printed materials such as how-to manuals, outreach materials, essential forms, and self-help posters.

If you can donate – here’s where to do it. And even if you can’t – check out the West Seattle hub map above (as well as more resources here) and be sure your family and neighbors all know about your nearest hub!

HELPING: Monday morning Alki Beach community cleanups launched

The photo is from Mandi, who announced two weeks ago that she was organizing weekly post-weekend community cleanups at Alki Beach, and welcoming assistance. Today was the second cleanup, she reports. “We are getting lots of support and interest. My goal is to start with cleanup and see what else we can do to keep Alki Beach beautiful.” Interested in helping? You can join Mandi at 9 am Mondays – email her at mandikhall@gmail.com.

SURVEY: Next step in the fight to save Roxhill Bog

(Southwestern side of Roxhill Bog, WSB file photo)
Half a year ago, we reported on a new effort to save Roxhill Bog. It concluded with a note that community involvement would be sought starting in late summer. Now it begins, with a survey:

West Seattle community members are being asked to participate in a survey of the Roxhill Park and its bog natural area as a part of the restoration efforts by a community lead partnership of organizations: Roxhill Champions, Duwamish Alive Coalition, City of Seattle, King County, and American Rivers. The purpose of this survey is to understand how communities are using the park and its natural area containing the bog. The community feedback on current uses, concerns and desires for the future will help ongoing planning efforts to restore the bog natural area and improve its use by community members. The survey is part of the hydrology study which was announced at a February “Stakeholders” meeting.

This natural area is one of the few remaining bogs in the city and was a thriving community treasure where families and community members connected with nature. Local schools used it as an outdoor classroom connecting curriculum with hands on learning, with community groups using it for recreation, education and social activities. It hosted one of the most diverse bird and native plant populations in the city.

The 5.3-acre bog natural area is also the headwaters of Longfellow Creek that flows through West Seattle. In recent years the area of the bog has been drying out, causing a rapid decline of the bog’s 2,000-year-old peat and its unique wetland ecosystem. The first step in restoring the bog’s health is to understand what is happening with the water in the bog. Part of the community-based effort to restore the bog’s health is conducting a hydrology study of it and to also understand how our community uses it currently and would like to in the future.

The survey (is open now and will) run through early September. All answers will be anonymous and any feedback is greatly appreciated. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and is available in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The information shared in the survey will be very helpful in planning for the bog and natural areas that the West Seattle community enjoys.

YOU CAN HELP: Got some time to spare on Sundays?

(WSB photo from May)

If you’re going to the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Sundays anyway – the nonprofit that operates it is calling again for volunteers:

Volunteer opportunity to support local farms and food access!

The West Seattle Farmers Market is looking for volunteers to help on market days with social distancing protocols and logistics, helping to keep our beloved farmers market running smoothly and safely for all. If you’d like to be a friendly, knowledgeable (masked) face inside the market, please fill out our volunteer application form! Of course, we’ll make sure you have time to shop too!

If you’re new – the market is open 10 am-2 pm Sundays in The Junction, on California SW between SW Oregon and SW Alaska.

YOU CAN HELP: Pencil Me In For Kids hopes to pencil you in

In just a few weeks, school starts again for thousands of local kids. Though the pandemic means “school” will look different – at least for the fall – some things haven’t changed: Many kids still need a helping hand to ensure they have supplies.

This is where Pencil Me In For Kids comes in – and has done so for almost a quarter century – with West Seattle community support, for West Seattle students. This year, that too looks different.

Sue Lindblom – who you might know as the proprietor of longtime WSB sponsor Illusions Hair Design – explains PMIFK:

We started as a fundraiser at Illusions in 1996 raising just over $1,800 and in 2002 West Seattle Rotary helped take it on as a project. Our goal has always been to get the specific small items where each school knew they would have a shortage, not just what we ‘thought’ would be helpful. This has always made PMIFK different from other fundraisers. In all this time, we have been able to purchase supplies at discounts from then-Morton’s Drugs to more recently from Staples in Westwood that have totaled tens of thousands of dollars if not much more.

Through the years, we have done raffles with prizes donated by local businesses, had a booth at the Street Festival for many years, had all our printed material donated by Liberty Bell Printing, held dinners at the West Seattle Eagles, held haircutting events at Illusions, received cash donations from Fauntleroy Church and the West Seattle Helpline, many donations from Illusions clients sometimes in the manner of our “Round Up’ pricing in August, donations from West Seattle Thriftway summer BBQs, along with money from the WS Rotary annual fund raising events.

Obviously, things have changed this year. Many events had to be cancelled and there is need everywhere.

Along with limited funding this year, each school is still in the throngs of figuring out exactly how the school will look in a month from now. We have decided to buy a few of the most needed items that are requested each year and hold back most of what we have for right now. We want to find out from each school, after a few weeks, what is needed in this year of the pandemic. The problem is there aren’t many funds this year. We are asking for help. We are asking anyone who can afford a few dollars to help us out this year to please donate.

There are two ways you can help:

#1 – An online donation page has just been set up through GoFundMe.

#2 – Send a check to send a check – for the West Seattle Rotary, noting that it’s for Pencil Me In For Kids – care of Illusions Hair Design, 5619 California Ave. SW, 98136.

YOU CAN HELP: Weekly community cleanups at Alki

Mandi is organizing weekly post-weekend community cleanups at Alki Beach and invites you to join her if you can: 9 am every Monday morning. Anyone interested in helping can meet her at Alki Beach Bathhouse (60th/Alki). Questions? Email Mandi at mandikhall@gmail.com.

P.S. Bring your own supplies (bag, grabber) if you can!

TASTE OF WEST SEATTLE: Reinvented! Want to be part of it?

The annual Taste of West Seattle was already in for one big change before the pandemic arrived – its presenting nonprofit, the West Seattle Helpline, merged with the West Seattle Food Bank earlier this year. But the WSFB has found a way to make it happen. Here’s the announcement:

The West Seattle Food Bank has updated the 2020 Taste of West Seattle to celebrate the community while keeping each other healthy and safe.

The Taste has always been about bringing neighbors together, promoting local restaurants/businesses, and, ultimately, strengthening the West Seattle community. Now, more than ever, we see the importance of coming together (while staying physically distant) and supporting local businesses.

We are excited to announce that this year’s Taste of West Seattle will be a Taste Tour of West Seattle, where participating businesses donate 10% of sales on special Taste Menu items to the West Seattle Food Bank. From Sunday, September 20th to Thursday, September 24th neighbors can dine in or get take-out and enjoy delicious meals from West Seattle’s favorite eateries including restaurants, bakeries, wineries, breweries, and know that their money is supporting their local favorites and the West Seattle Food Bank mission to end hunger and homelessness.

If you are a eatery interested in participating or a business interested in sponsoring, please email development@wshelpline.org

Updates when it gets closer!

YOU CAN HELP: Neighborhood House diaper drive

Announced by Neighborhood House, which serves many local families from its center in High Point:

Neighborhood House, a community organization that serves 16,000 people in King County, is hosting a diaper drive to meet a critical need.

Did you know that diapers are not covered by public benefits such as WIC or food stamps, even though they are essential items for families with young children?

We live in a region that is powered by one-day deliveries and bulk purchases but the reality is that many people cannot afford and do not have access to these services.

Join Neighborhood House in making sure families and children have diapers right now.

$25 covers 2 weeks of diapers for one child.
$50 covers 1 month of diapers for one child.
$150 covers 3 months of diapers for one child.

You can even host your own campaign. Reach out to arturom@nhwa.org to learn more. To make a donation, please visit www.nhwa.org.

YOU CAN HELP! WestSide Baby needs more ‘Dollars for Diapers’ to ‘Stuff the Bus’

 |   How to help | West Seattle news

Another local summer tradition that’s a little different this year: WestSide Baby‘s “Stuff the Bus” diaper drive. No in-person bus stuffing this time around, but no shortage of need … as WS Baby explains, “So far this year we have already distributed over 1.1 million diapers, about the same amount that we typically distribute in an entire YEAR!” The goal of this summer’s “Stuff the Bus” is to raise enough money for 350,000 more diapers, and WS Baby is still 50,000 short of that. If you can give, there are multiple options here.
