I can’t stress enough, if you have chronic concerns, contact your community council (not just Alki). Whether you believe they are effective or not, they can get police leadership into the room and you can ask your question/voice your concern to their face. Police reps attend many of the community council meetings, even the ones that aren’t just crime-focused like WSCPC (which by the way meets next week, and always has the largest contingent of police leadership in the room – Tuesday 6/15, 7 pm, SW Precinct, Delridge/Webster, plus, as we announced on the main page the other day, City Attorney Pete Holmes will be the guest – if there’s something you think should be dealt with more harshly at the misdemeanor type level, he’s the guy).

Well, we could REALLY go back to the early 60’s, when there was a Wigwam store in the middle of the Husky’s block…Puerta Vallarta-ish, perhaps? Before LaGrace expanded to the cupcake corner and had an entrance only on Alaska….Children’s Corner/”Leigh Dunn” had a side entrance on Alaska, next to the Elite Beauty Salon (where the little ethnic markets are, next to Wells Fargo). And when our little Junction could support any number of women’s dress shops (Louise North, Margaret’s Apparel, La Grace, Johnson’s), not to mention a Penney’s and the long-lost “Topper Shop”! And Vann’s (Maharaja) had the cool curved booths that I would kill to have right now, as well as the best french dips and potato salad.

That said…I remember the smell of popcorn at Kress’s and the little dishes of candy on the counter at Russell’s Jeweler’s. And every time I walk into Lee’s, I glance warmly at the little alcove just inside the door, to the left. I spent a LOT of time there on a bench seat at a little slanted desk, reading Little Golden books while my mom shopped for fabric.

I love West Seattle….

Safeway’s point person on the project noted (as written in the story) that the rezoning isn’t even complete yet. Nor has the hearing on the alley vacation been scheduled – the city council Transportation Committee meets next on June 8th, but that agenda’s not out yet; Safeway says they’ll have a construction schedule once they know when that hearing is to be held.

Last but not least, no permits are issued yet:

None of this is anything bad. It just means, don’t expect to see the wrecking ball show up tomorrow, or even within a few weeks.

Yes, that’s the same information we published here on April 30th, minus having actually talked to Steve Huling and having actually contacted a representative of Trader Joe’s. Here’s our story:

WSB Forum members, meantime, were the first to note that Burien staffers have been claiming it’s confirmed. While researching our story, I spoke to a manager there who claimed they knew TJ’s was “looking” at WS – which is what TJ’s corporate subsequently confirmed, for the first time – but not that they had nailed something down. Of course, what you tell someone identifying herself as a reporter may be different from what you tell someone you don’t think is going to go tell 25,000 people.

You cannot state that it is coming here just based on a DPD permit, which is why we were very cautious in our headline and approach to the story. If you want to declare that something is so because it’s in the DPD file – take a look at this page:

That is another former Huling/Gee (though not Huling-owned) property, 4700 Fauntleroy. I noticed the “Les Schwab” more than a month ago and spent the better part of a week checking with the company directly before learning that this was an old proposal for the site (last fall) that no longer is in play. The DPD site, though, has not been updated.

That said, hey, nothing has occurred in the past two and a half weeks since our initial report to suggest that TJ’s is NOT coming … so as we wrote then, it may indeed be so. I am continuing to follow up, frequently.

I am interested in input from voters in my precinct (SEA-34-1490) as well as all voters in the 34th district that read this. I don’t really have a strong preference since all three Democrats seem competent, energetic and have the required (for me) mix of intelligence, education and feistyness needed to represent the Democrats of the 34th district.

I lean towards Marcee Stone since when I back up and take the long view, the future will be influenced more by whether we can start growing public campaign financing at the state and local level( since it damn sure will not be started at the federal level) than by any specific local concerns.

Up close, I like the energy and general wonkyness of Joe Fitzgibbons. He may be young, but that is no barrier, and I find it refreshing that he seems to understand tech issues beyond the buzzword stage so many of the young get stuck at (at least in comparison to us old geeks)

Ivan likes him too and that means something to me.

Mike Heavey seems like a nice traditional democrat who is doing and saying all the right things.

Got strong opinions? Post them here. The district endorsement meeting followed by the nominating convention, gives PCO’s and members an inordinate amount of influence in the process and that is going to happen on Wednesday evening 5-12-10.

We were out for a belated Mother’s Day lunch when this broke out but managed to cover via iPhone. Thanks to everyone who sent messages. We had been trying to catch the 3 pm water taxi but missed it because of ridiculous traffic on Harbor Ave (mostly around Salty’s!) – gave up, headed up the hill, and started seeing messages about the outage, so we drove over to 35th and took note of all the lights that were out, subsequently moving over to Delridge. City Light took a *long* time to acknowledge the outage … I just updated the home page item with a link to their very short final report.
