celeste17ParticipantJust stopped by the WS Duckie Reserve and enjoyed the memorial day display. Ron it was great talking to you.
Thank You for the smiles.

DuckitudeMemberThank you Celeste! Yes, the duckies of the West Seattle Ducky Reserve continue to entertain… although, I don’t post anymore about the displays, since there was so much negative feedback herein about such postings. So, the blog’s loss, as far as I see it, but if that’s what the people want, that is what they get.
.
At any rate, I digress. It was great to see you at the Memorial Day display. Ducky Wayne is singing “Proud to be an American” and it is enough to make you cry… tears for the troops.
Smiles for those who see and hear the duckies, because, well, they are cool, and they have soul!
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

WSACMemberWhere is the Ducky Reserve? I, for one, am interested. Sounds fabulous!
May 28, 2010 at 5:12 am #695316
miwsParticipantWSAC, The Ducky Reserve is just south of Lowman Beach Park, on the road/trail that leads to Lincoln Park.
I don’t know how familiar you are with that part of West Seattle, but Lowman Beach Park is at the convergence of Beach Drive SW, 48th Av SW and Lincoln Park Way SW. (LP Way is the road that branches off from Fauntleroy at the north end of Lincoln Park, and heads downhill in a northwesterly direction).
The Reserve is pretty cool! Check it out! And I need to make it down there because I haven’t been there in ages.

celeste17ParticipantMike I hadn’t been there in a while either and today I was in the area and my car made the turn to go to the reserve.
WSAC, here is the web site for you to learn more information about the Duckie Reservation. Enjoy

miwsParticipantNow that’s an intuitive car, Celeste!
It know where you want to go, even before you do! ;-)

uglybrowncrowMemberSounds like wholesum fun. How can I see them?
May 28, 2010 at 5:01 pm #695320
celeste17ParticipantUBC you can see them on the web site or you can see them in person at 7031A Beach Drive SW. He is located in the lowman beach area right next to lowman beach. Good fun all are welcomed.

charlabobParticipantI’m sorry you no longer post ducky information here…it’s the community’s loss. No reason someone else can’t take on the news of new ducky events. And the flamingos are still up for a play date.
May 28, 2010 at 11:19 pm #695322
DuckitudeMemberYou make me laugh everytime I think of playdate between flamingos and duckies…. I just visualize lots of short folks (duckies) running around the legs of the tall folks (flamingos)… Basketball is out! Football might work..
Yah, I have to leave it up to my fans and groupies to keep the flames going here… otherwise, I get all this flak about “self promotion” without paying an advertising fee, as if everything I do has a profit motive…
May 29, 2010 at 12:24 am #695323
WSBKeymasterI want to be clear lest anyone misread the last line.
If there is any flak, it is NOT coming from us, the site owners. We have not solicited advertising $ from him nor have we complained publicly or elsewhere. I believe we may have received an advertising inquiry once, and Patrick answered it; we don’t hound people – if they inquire and then decide not to advertise, we respect their decision. Everyone’s got to make their own decision about how best to promote their business.
I don’t recall anything Ducky has done that has violated our fairly clear rules regarding business participation in the forums (disclose your affiliation, use Freebies/Deals/Sales, Job Listings are free, etc.). And as he notes, most of the posts I recall seeing were not business-oriented. We have watched the Ducky Reserve over the years – my son and I have been walking to Lowman Beach since he was old enough to walk (I don’t recall exactly when we first saw the ducks, though) and it is not a commercially oriented display. – TR

JanSParticipantthanks for that, TR :)

metrognomeParticipantI almost hate to ‘wade’ in here, but I believe the previous discussion around ‘advertising’ was in the context of the City’s land use rules as a neighbor had apparently filed a complaint about the art gallery, not the duck displays. Some commenters to that thread felt that mentioning the gallery, incl. web site addresses, in forum posts constituted ‘advertising’ which is prohibited under city rules for home businesses. I don’t recall that it had anything to do with WSB rules, advertising or otherwise.
Having said that, while I love duckies I really prefer a wild goose.
May 29, 2010 at 2:57 am #695326
DuckitudeMemberHi metrognome: You have waded in. Actually, do a little research. The flak was mostly about (I would say 95% about), and I quote “ducky this, ducky that” and, well, literally nothing to do with Sterling Images Gallery and the issues related to whether it was a “going commercial concern or not.”
WSB: Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t mean to imply the flak was from the WSB. Just a comment about flak, in general.
May 29, 2010 at 2:58 am #695327
JanSParticipantLand use codes for home businesses ( I have one), allow you to advertise. They just don’t allow you to use an address. I know, because some kindhearted soul reported me about a year ago. They were upset anonymously that I had included my address on an obscure website that has a list of massage therapists. They weren’t even reporting my personal website…that was not mentioned, but I had to change that, too. It now says “Admiral District, and people have to ask me where I’m at.
So..advertising OK for home businesses, addresses not OK.
The ducks are not a business…they just are what they are :) It’s like me calling attention to a billboard that I may have put up outside my home.

hammyMemberLove Love Love the duckies! My toddler was enchanted with the Xmas display and we look forward to visiting again sometime soon. Wonderful and quirky places like the Ducky Reserve add such value to the community and create great memories. So thanks.
May 29, 2010 at 4:49 am #695329
charlabobParticipantI didn’t mean to imply WSB opposition either — I knew that didn’t happen. I meant to imply that we, as a community, should make sure everyone knows what the duckies are up to…
who knows; since the charla half is job hunting, she might have time to arrange a playdate for her vast collection of celebratory flamingos. They specialize in chess and go, but they can do hockey and rollerderby. Neither require height.

miwsParticipantMay 29, 2010 at 5:15 am #695331
metrognomeParticipantgeez, I thought ducks went ‘quack quack’ not ‘snark snark’. I did do my research. This is the thread I was referring to; it seems clear to me that the gallery was what the complaint was about: https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/should-i-start-a-petition
Honk honk!
May 29, 2010 at 6:31 am #695332
DuckitudeMembermetrognome: Looks like you did do some research. That thread got way off topic about the duckies, which had practically nothing to do with gallery/zoning issue. So, you got it right, the comments were in a thread that I started to get opinions about zoning laws and then go from there. The duckies got mixed into the discussion by others who wanted to complain about both the duckies and the gallery. Yah, it affected me and any further posting about ducky displays. And, yah, I will continue not to post about them.
May 30, 2010 at 12:40 am #695333
JoBParticipantmetrognome..
the forum snarking about duckie posts preceded the duckie zoning issue by months…
that said..anyone who gets their panties in a bunch and stops posting their Passions and/or our opportunities on the forum because of a few snarkers is depriving us all.
are you listening duckie? you need not promote to inform us of changing displays.
i for one would love a heads up.
one of the things i learned during the latest JoB war was that for every poster who couldn’t wait to jump on the trash bandwagon.. there were two who privately emailed to express their support.
Follow your passions.. I guarantee someone is interested… even in duckies
May 30, 2010 at 2:25 pm #695334
DuckitudeMemberMike: The image of flamingos doing the limbo totally cracks me up! Too funny!
