bsmommaParticipantWe don’t go down there after noon on nice days/summer time. How many gun related stories were there last summer? 2….3????? I understand being young, rollin on Alki, bumpin the stero, etc…. I used to do it. Maybe it’s me getting older, but it didn’t seem so scary back then (in the mid/late 90’s).

JoBParticipantAlkiman..
No.. perception of threat is what you are talking about.. not actual threat.
Having been on the receiving end of random violence i have no trouble distinguishing the difference between a nuisance and a threat. There is a difference you know.
CMP…
define Riffraff…
because i have the sneaking hunch that this little old lady would have qualified by your definition more than once even though i was neither violent nor indigent.

WSBKeymasterTo Todd @ #8 – The mobile command unit was destroyed in the firebombing blamed on Christopher Monfort, accused killer of Officer Tim Brenton (WSHS graduate).

Re: Police and dealing with people making crude remarks at passersby on Alki – since nobody brought it up – this all came up after the May 1, 2009 shooting incident; I covered several Q/A meetings with police leadership, at the Alki Community Council, the Crime Prevention Council, etc. Note the last graf here:

Capt. Kessler and his current ops Lt. Norm James were back at the ACC this past April to preview summer beach plans.
SPD leaders tell Alki Community Council they’re set for summer
I can’t stress enough, if you have chronic concerns, contact your community council (not just Alki). Whether you believe they are effective or not, they can get police leadership into the room and you can ask your question/voice your concern to their face. Police reps attend many of the community council meetings, even the ones that aren’t just crime-focused like WSCPC (which by the way meets next week, and always has the largest contingent of police leadership in the room – Tuesday 6/15, 7 pm, SW Precinct, Delridge/Webster, plus, as we announced on the main page the other day, City Attorney Pete Holmes will be the guest – if there’s something you think should be dealt with more harshly at the misdemeanor type level, he’s the guy).

I define threatening as any percieved threat. Like: A. large group of drunk bikers with beards and tattoos making crude comments to passers-by near Don Armeni Park in front of Embers, B. A group of young males blaring rap music, wearing gang-style clothing, swearing incessantly, hassling passers-by and blocking traffic. C. Anyone defending such actions.

JanSParticipantAlkiman…you must have been around here for a long long time, since the Embers hasn’t existed in what? 20 years or more?

JoBParticipantalkiman..
you must either feel threatened a lot
or never go out in public at night.
i am not sure how you can go out at night without occasionally encountering one or the other.
i can’t.
but when i do.. i seldom feel threatened… hassled maybe.. threatened.. no.
btw…
i don’t defend public rudeness in any venue by anyone.
But i do label it rudeness.. not threatening behavior.

AlkimanMemberJanS: Yes, I have been around for a long time.
JoB: No, I rarely feel threatened. I’m big, strong, ugly and (legally) armed. I just feel bad seeing smaller, older and weaker people not feeling comfortable in our parks and avoiding Alki during lovely sunsets. You and I may not feel threatened often but many others do.

JoBParticipantAlkiman…
i do feel for people who feel threatened by public rowdiness…
People who look or act differently than you have always been threatening to too many…
my grandson is graduating from high school this year and if his antics exceed his facebook posts as much as i suspect… then he has certainly made more than one person uncomfortable…
but my guess is that they laughed at his 6’4″ curly haired redhead self and shook their heads at the antics of the young instead of calling 911.
I think people who are threatened by rowdiness need to get out more and learn to tell the difference between a hassle and a threat so that if a threat finds them they can recognize it…

So right on JoB
..
Personally I find Alki to be much less of a hassle once you get about thirty yards off shore. Not much hooliganism out on the water. Just don’t venture too far up the Duwamish, those Tukwila cops are hotdoggers.

JoBParticipantaustin..
i’m guessing the traffic is quieter out there tho there are still plenty of low riders:)
