saneyMemberdid they have to pick the worst possible location for that trailer? i was there last night and parked in its vicinity. to leave the parking lot, i had to back all the way out of the aisle into traffic to get out.

JanSParticipantI think the location of the trailer will make more sense once construction has started. It has to be accessible (doors on the north side away from construction, and near the northern-most entrance on 42nd SW.) I don’t think there were many options.
It’s a big lot…park on the other side :)

CarsonParticipantFunny, in a few weeks, it won’t matter since the current store will be nothing more than rubble.

pamMemberWill it be that soon – weeks?

CarsonParticipantThey (Safeway) claim they will have the final word in June and will start right away. I had also heard Sept, but you know how rumors start….

KBearParticipantOH NO!! Where will people on the north end of West Seattle get their groceries? We only have 4 other supermarkets, a farmers’ market, and a produce stand! If only we had a Trader Joe’s, we wouldn’t have to suffer so!

JanSParticipantRumors..lol…one of the checkers told me July…guess we’ll know when we know, won’t we? I live across the street from there…maybe I’ll have to start a photo log of progress, or something like that :)
May 25, 2010 at 8:42 pm #695202
flowerpetalMemberThat photo log could take a long long time Jan if this project tanks like the “hole” food project did. I suppose you could take pictures of the rubble from season to season.

JanSParticipantflowerpetal…please don’t even think that. We don’t want to jinx anything :)
Actually, I’m pretty sure this is gonna happen. Safeway has planned this for a long time, has gone through too many hoops to now let it sit. Safeway owns the land, Safeway is paying for the store – they will own it, not lease it. So, I’m thinking the gods are looking favorable on it. :)

flowerpetalMemberI hope the goddesses are looking favorably upon it too! :-)

hopeyParticipantAs a Lafayette parent whose kid “commutes” from the south end of WS, I am really REALLY not looking forward to the start of the Safeway project. Traffic is already bad enough before and after school, and it’s going to get so much worse. UGH!
May 26, 2010 at 6:50 am #695206
JanSParticipantOne of the things that’s really going to hurt Lafayette is the closing of the parking lot behind Safeway where a lot of parents park to pick up their kids. That lot will no longer exist, and parking around there will be at a premium starting the next school year. I know this has been an issue with Lafayette. Have they talked with the parents or PTSA about it yet?

WSBKeymasterWe reported on the trailer and the project status a week ago.
https://westseattleblog.com/2010/05/admiral-safeway-project-update-trailer-temporary-pharmacy
Safeway’s point person on the project noted (as written in the story) that the rezoning isn’t even complete yet. Nor has the hearing on the alley vacation been scheduled – the city council Transportation Committee meets next on June 8th, but that agenda’s not out yet; Safeway says they’ll have a construction schedule once they know when that hearing is to be held.
Last but not least, no permits are issued yet:
http://web1.seattle.gov/DPD/permitstatus/default.aspx?a=2622,,CALIFORNIA,AVE,SW
None of this is anything bad. It just means, don’t expect to see the wrecking ball show up tomorrow, or even within a few weeks.
Speaking of demolition, note that there is no underground parking with this project, so it does not run any risk of becoming Hole 2.
