A special invitation to forum friends to join in the Seattle Solidarity March for Lolita, which some orca friends and I have organized for this Saturday, January 17, 1 p.m., at the Statue of Liberty Plaza. We will march in support of the world-wide effort to retire the captured orca Lolita from performing in Miami and return her to her home in the Salish Sea. Our theme is “She’s there now, but she belongs here.”

We are also marching for the health and recovery of her wild family, the endangered Southern Residents … because it doesn’t make much sense to bring her home if they aren’t here to greet her!

All welcome! After-party at the Celtic Swell! Hope to see you there!

See our listing in the Event Calendar: https://westseattleblog.com/ai1ec_event/the-seattle-solidarity-march-for-lolita/?instance_id=435002, or on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/824071510970187/

“I would dearly love to see rational Muslims turn out in mobs protesting this act and helping find and turn in the perpetrators.”

According to Reuters, 3.7 million people turned out in France today to denounce the recent attacks. They report that it is the biggest public demonstration in the history of France.

    https://news.yahoo.com/least-3-7-million-march-france-honor-attack-194247869.html

I’m sure many of those people were Muslims. The policeman that died was Muslim. As I mentioned earlier, (#41) a Muslim was instrumental in saving several lives during the market hostage situation was Muslim. As Lindsey pointed out (#20) many leaders have condemned the acts.

So how many Muslims and their leaders need to condemn this stuff before we can give the tired fiction of “no Muslims taking a stand against” a rest? And does it count if it’s not reported by NBC, CBS, or Fox or other corporate media sources?

Comcast shares your internet connection with your local neighbors (not joking). There are a few things you can do.

    1) Reset your cable modem by unplugging it from it’s power supply for 30 seconds then plugging it back in.

    2) if you have a seperate WiFi router, unplug its power for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

    3) If you have an old modem, you may need to upgrade, some modems will outright stop working if they are too old and Comcast decides to not support them.

    4) Find out which neighbor is using a torrent service to consume all the bandwidth in your area and tell them to stop (risky).

    5) Use OpenDNS https://www.opendns.com/ (also has tools for better security and parental control on sites your kids can access on your network)

    6) Leave Comcast.

It has been brought to my attention that Internet Explorer users experience some annoying popups when downloading the calendar off the web site. Therefore I’ve moved the calendars to Dropbox, where no such nonsense occurs.

The screen calendar has the months in the standard chronological sequence. It’s much easier to peruse on-screen than the crazily-ordered printable version:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/jsxbyxqtz4l8j8o/Calendar_2015_Screen.pdf?dl=0

The printable calendar is designed to be printed duplexed along the short (top) edge onto legal-sized (8.5×14-inch) paper, then folded in half and stapled in the crease. You’ll need three sheets of paper. I’d recommend card stock for best results:

This might be too late for this season to help people out but one of the best things we’ve started doing is signing up for click and ship through the USPS. Located here: https://www.usps.com/ship/print-a-label.htm

You need to create an account and you can save addresses so make shipping easier, but you don’t have to. You can select what type of packing you will use either your own or the standard priority mail boxes or envelope. There are discounts for printing your own label and you can choose additional options like more insurance and notifications. Pay on line and print your label, pack it up and you can just bring it to the post office and leave on the counter. No waiting in line.Do yourself a favor, it is worth it!

Here are three places in Seattle – Again – nothing I know of in West Seattle for 20 People

Wework – Great spaces and good prices.

Impact Hub Seattle – Easy Access by bus downtown

Office Junction here in West Seattle but I think 20 would be pushing it for space.

What are your requirements? Wifi? desk space? Lecture hall?

You also might try calling Youngstown as well. They have spaces that can be good for groups.

I don’t understand how any of this has to do with Snowden’s revelations. As you (I think correctly) observe, snooping even on friends is SOP and he simply exposed the extent of it to a public that included many who preferred to remain ignorant of the fact. What is clear from this incident is that major corporations are not well-prepared to resist cyber attacks. The discussions on some security boards and websites are very informative on that point as well as the gradual process following the hack that led to the drama around the Interview. Sony hack

Just to clarify – the search box at top right works fine, for the news section of the site. It does not currently work for the forum, which has always used a different content system (no other option when we added it by request), but fixing this is part of our in-the-works overhaul, so I apologize in the meantime.

anonyme, I know you’re asking about Basic Talk, but feel I should at least put this out there; I don’t use the phone much either, but have been happy with AT&T GoPhone, Prepaid, No Contract Service for over 3 1/2 years now.

    https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/prepaidphones.html

I was hoping to find the specific info on my Plan, but with only a quick search of their site, the best I could do was the above link that shows (two, anyway) of their most basic, cheapest phones; one $9.99, another $14.99.

Anyway, my plan is 10 cents per minute for phone calls, including the time it takes to listen to any Voicemails, and 20 cents for each Send/Receive instance, in a Text conversation, (which I don’t do often, and have a hunch that you wouldn’t either, or perhaps at all).

The one downside I can see, is that you use the phone so little, presuming those very few calls per month are not lengthy, you might actually lose money.

There is no Contract hassle/BS, and you can replenish your Minutes either by buying a Card pretty much at any place like Target, or Bartells, or other Drug Stores, or can do so online, paying with a Credit Card.

I believe the minimum amount is $10.00, which is good for 30 days, and does not Roll Over at all; use only $1.00 worth of Minutes in a 30 day period, and you are SOL, and out $9.00, once that 30 days has passed, even if you buy another $10.00 card before the 30 days is up.

However, if you do (as I do), and buy a $25.00 Card, good for 90 days, and buy another $25.00 Card before the 30 days is up, it *does* Roll Over, like if you had $20.00 left when your 90 Days was about to expire, and add your new $25.00 Card within the time due, the remaining $20.00 Rolls Over with the $25.00, and you now have another 90 days to burn up $45.00 worth of Service.

They also have $50.00 Cards, and $100.00 Cards, good for 6 and 12 months respectively, IIRC, with the Rollover Option.

Anyway, hope this might be helpful.

If the found kayak is either yellow or white, it may possibly be one of the kayaks that my sister and a neighbor had stolen from the Fauntleroy neighborhood in April. That’s a long time ago, but FYI those kayaks have never been recovered. Here’s the original report about them: https://westseattleblog.com/2014/04/west-seattle-crime-watch-kayaks-stolen-mailbox-tampering/

in 2013 there were 32 officers killed by gunfire in the United States.. 2 of them accidental shootings

    http://www.odmp.org/search/year?year=2013

this year there have been 42.. 2 of those accidental shootings

    http://www.odmp.org/search/year

it’s impossible to accurately count the number of gun related deaths attributed to the police in the line of duty in the United States because there are no federal statistics kept…

yup.. none.. let that sink in for just a moment…

and then thank the NRA who thinks keeping a database of shootings of any kind might actually alert the American public to the danger of unlimited numbers of firearms…

We know exactly how many officers were killed in 2013 by gunfire.. but we do not have an accurate count of how many citizens were killed by police in the line of duty…

it turns out the best tally is actually on a facebook page.. which reports 754 fatalities by officer in the last half of 2013.. 1750 to date since then.. that’s 996 this year alone.

    https://www.facebook.com/KilledByPolice

there are others where you can get a look at the details behind those numbers

    http://www.fatalencounters.org/

    http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/

    http://regressing.deadspin.com/were-compiling-every-police-involved-shooting-in-americ-1624180387

    all links from this article

    http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/another-much-higher-count-of-police-homicides/

and all requiring significant digging to find actual counts….

from Wikipedia… the number of justifiable homicides by officer in the United States averages 400 yr

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_States

For the years of 2013 and 2014 in Canada wiki list 17 incidents

That there is a disparity in those figures.. even if you adjust them for population… is an understatement of vast proportions.

We clearly have a problem.. not just with the way that our police force interacts with it’s citizenry but with the authoritarian manner in which we approach policing… and it’s inevitable corollary… incarceration.

isn’t it time we acknowledged that problem and worked to fix it.

Personally, i liked officer friendly much better.

“Revises the operation of Board member committees and investigative panels to:

    (1) require that they operate in accordance with the membership, participation, and policy requirements (including new requirements for public participation in advisory activities of the Board) contained in this Act;”

there’s that 10% thing you are talking about

    but then there’s more

“(2) deny them authority to make decisions on behalf of the Board; and

    (3) prohibit direct reporting to EPA.”

that sure looks like gutting to me.
