Make a Difference in One Hour! – Tutors Needed to Inspire Struggling Young Readers (West Seattle)

Reading Partners is a literacy non-profit that mobilizes community volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to struggling elementary student readers.

No experience is required to volunteer! We seek volunteers who can commit 1 hour/week for a semester. Tutors are paired to work with the same student and are provided with an easy-to-follow curriculum that includes all of the books, worksheets, and step-by-step lesson plans to teach an effective lesson. Reading Partners also has a staff Site Coordinator who is available to support tutors at all times. Volunteers make an enormous impact: on average, students double their rate of learning while enrolled in the program.

As to the “ism” pertinent to all of this, the best word is “neoliberalism.” I resisted that terminology for some time, insisting it is only the latest iteration of capital’s never ending quest to achieve dominance of the market. But I’ve become convinced the distinctive features of neoliberalism are deliberate and persistent enough as finance capitalism outstrips national boundaries and presses governments into competition with each other to see who will best accommodate “the market.” With a nod to market fundamentalism, a distinctive feature of neoliberalism, note the comment of the TN legislature in the NPR piece who seems to lament the sorry state of affairs for long term permanent employees in one breath but as a matter of faith (mythos v logos) cautions that any attempt to introduce regulation is off the table.

JTB, that article lays it out pretty well. Except, it still lays too much blame on science.

In the nutrition world, there are tons of studies on what foods do and don’t do. Some show clear results, but most are very undetermined. The public loves nutrition studies, so regardless of how significant a finding is, the results get reported.

The big problem is that nutrition quacks are EVERYWHERE!! Many present themselves as scientists, or at least trained experts.

I am firmly on the side of Charlie Hebdo, but I don’t think they were relieved of considering when they had made their point and when it became excessive or not particularly helpful. All good comics recognize when they’ve gone to far (see link below). I mean were they thinking they’d just keep at it until ISIL or Al Qaeda said “OK, you can put up images of the Prophet and we’re cool with that.”? Or perhaps Charb really did suppose that eventually he’d be killed if he kept at it and he was cool with that. Hard to say. That said, once the murders took place, I think it was important for the media to take a stand and display the cartoons in question. We’ll see how that plays out in the long run.

If the global ecosystem was so sensitive to changes, it would have died off eons ago–especially after any number of large astroid strikes. Maybe the earth is still in recovery from the last major strike and will continue to gradually warm until the next big hit? Why is global warming science so tunnel visioned on punishing humans for returning carbon to the system? We are the only animals that have the ability to return deeply buried carbon to the surface where it can be used in the ecosystem.

Even if we could change the climate with CO2, increasing temperature would have more “good” than “bad”. Fossil records show that the earth had tropical vegetation at high latitudes many times in history. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could grow coconuts and mango trees at Alki Beach instead of living under the 3,000 feet of glacier ice that melted away 20,000 years ago? So first start claiming your unemployment right away. They work on a week from Sunday to Friday and your first week is a waiting week. Their internet site is pretty straight forward. http://www.esd.wa.gov/index.php

OK now for what’s next. Everything will have two sides to it. Your agenda as the job hunter and the other side is the employer looking to hire. A lot will depend on the area that you work in and the nature of the work. You might consider making a list of what you liked and disliked about your current job. This should help you figure out what you would like to do next. The main point is do you want to stay in the same work and living in the same location? If yes then just go looking and that is your short term agenda. Your mid term agenda is doing similar work but getting more skills/experience and picking locations that you would like to live/work. The long term agenda is time for a big change. Study or entry level position in another career. You need to prioritize these three choices. If you want a big change then focusing on the short term solution is a mistake. Not just for you but if you go to an employer for the quick fix but you have not worked out your long term agenda they may see these as issues (if they can screen effectively). Work on your resume and get as much feedback/help on it as possible. Two aspects of looking for your next position are technical and networking. I always think of this quote from Lou Holtz when I’m pitching myself as a potential employee “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it” Technically you have to have these three things when you come to the table. The other aspect which I’m terrible at is networking. Reach out to people The current people you work with, people you used to work with and people you want to work with. Don’t just send in a resume. Try to put a name with the position. Either the HR person or the CEO, or the person you might end up working with day to day. http://www.linkedin.com can be a good tool for this. Keep a record of your application history (you’ll need it for unemployment process anyway) If your search will be largely electronic based I would try setting up an email for all employment related stuff. Often with the internet there will be details on what they are looking for in a position but be aware that these details might not stay posted and might be helpful if you are called to interview. The worksource resource is good https://fortress.wa.gov/esd/worksource/Employment.aspx but I find it a bit lacking in that it is there to cater to a very wide range of job seekers and I think tends to cater to the lowest common denominator of unskilled short term employees. (I guess that is their most common customer) And while they are helping you get a job they are also there to make sure you are eligible for your unemployment. The first worksouce meeting they setup for me was on job hunting resources. It was OK but I realized part of the agenda was a bit of cheer leading. It was a bit annoying but it is kind of important as it is a case of perception being reality. It is important to believe that you are employable. Getting laid off is just a change of direction. Use it as on opportunity to get something better for yourself and your family. Also don’t be afraid to take a break and stop and smell the roses. Good luck

Another vote for careful shopping at PCC. Membership there is VERY reasonable…I think a total of $60, and when I joined (eons ago) you only had to pay $2 any month you shopped toward your membership until you reached that amount. In addition to the member discount days (15th and 16th of each month), some months you get two 10% off coupons in your newsletter. Their bulk section can’t be beat for all sorts of pantry basics like beans, rice, lentils, nuts, etc., and the bulk herbs and spices, as mentioned above, are a fantastic deal. You don’t need to be a member to shop there, of course. I second the recommendation of the walk, talk and taste tour.

Admittedly, the fresh organic produce at PCC can be steep. I watch for specials at QFC and try to stick to what’s in season, and sometimes get hardier produce (apples, citrus, potatoes) organic at Trader Joe’s. Trader Joe’s organic whole wheat pasta is also a good deal and the basis for a lot of meals in my house.

One of my favorite cheap and healthy snacks for filling a growing kiddo is popcorn…if you can make it on the stove or get a hot-air popper, you can make a lot quickly and cheaply (buy the kernels in bulk), season it with various different things, and it is a good, bulky, filling snack.

One more tip…if sandwiches are (or could be) a good option for you, definitely check out the Franz bakery outlet store in SODO! You can get sandwich loaves (and bagels and other bread products) there for a fraction of what you pay other places.
