9:54 AM: Just received from SDOT:
Due to some unforeseen challenges at the 44th Ave SW and SW Edmunds street paving project, the crew will need to work an extra day today, Monday 8/17, (until) 7 pm. The same restrictions will be in place on this block of 44th Ave SW (no thru traffic and no Metro traffic, but local access allowed.) After Monday, the crew will resume the schedule on the flyer for the next 2 weekends.
The crew worked at least 12 hours on Saturday to manage the unforeseen issues and minimize traffic impacts and local disruptions to the extent possible. They will finish paving the curb panels today, but they won’t be able to open those curb panels up to vehicles until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning in order to allow sufficient cure time. The travel lane panels should be opened Monday night since they were paved on Saturday.
The note didn’t mention whether Saturday’s gas-line break factored into the “unforeseen challenges”; we have a followup question out.
10:44 AM: We just went over to look. 44th is currently open except for part of the southbound lane right before SW Edmunds, and even there, one lane is open, with flagger help.
6:07 AM: It’s Monday, the 147th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.

We start today by reminding you about two road closures:
44TH SW IN THE JUNCTION: As we first reported Wednesday, 44th between SW Alaska and SW Edmunds will be closed most of the weekend – and the next two weekends – for replacement of concrete road panels damaged by heavy bus traffic.
From SDOT‘s notice:
ï‚· Sidewalk access will not be impacted.
ï‚· Please use detour route.
ï‚· All lanes will be closed to general traffic and Metro traffic on 44th Ave SW between SW Edmunds St and SW Alaska Street on:
o Saturday Aug. 15th from 8 AM through Sunday Aug 16th at 6 PM
o Saturday Aug. 22nd at 12:01 AM through Sunday Aug. 23rd at 11:59 PM
o Saturday Aug. 29th at 12:01 AM through Sunday Aug. 30th at 11:59 PM
 Metro Transit’s C-Line will not use the bus stops on SW Alaska St at Calif. Ave SW (at Easy St Records & at Key Bank.) C-Line passengers can use bus stops on SW Alaska St east of 42nd Ave SW and east of 41st Ave SW.
SW GENESEE IN NORTH DELRIDGE: As part of the project preparing for the RapidRide H Line, SW Genesee is closed again this weekend between Delridge and 25th, with local-only access east of Genesee. Delridge Way itself IS open, though.
SDOT says, “Drivers will need to detour at SW Andover St or SW Alaska St to get to and from Delridge Way SW.” Also note that Metro Route 50 is rerouted (details here). The closure could last until 5 am Monday, although last weekend’s closure was over by early Sunday evening, so we’ll be checking on it.
6:12 AM: It’s Friday, the 144th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.
ROAD WORK/CLOSURES
*Starting at 9 am today – as part of the major Delridge road work to get ready for the RapidRide H Line – SW Genesee is scheduled to close between 25th and Delridge again through the weekend. Here’s the Metro Route 50 reroute plan.
*Also this weekend – more pavement repair in The Junction will close 44th SW between Alaska and Edmunds, Saturday and much of Sunday. Check here for bus reroutes.
*Next 1st Ave. S. Bridge northbound closure is Sunday night – 10 pm-5 am. (Here’s our update on the project.)

Last weekend, we reported that in addition to the just-completed repair of a bus-battered block of SW Alaska in The Junction, SDOT had plans to do the same at/near 44th/Edmunds. While the work wasn’t scheduled then, it is now. Just in from SDOT’s Kari Tupper:
This work is scheduled for three weekends, beginning this Saturday, August 15th through Sunday August 16th, Saturday, August 22nd through Sunday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 29 through Sunday August 30th. We will also close 44th Ave SW between SW Edmunds and SW Alaska to all traffic including Metro buses during construction and re-open late Sunday afternoons.
That work will take three weekends because at least 14 concrete panels – street sections – need to be replaced.

As previewed, SDOT was back on SW Alaska west of California SW today, continuing work to repair bus-battered pavement. The westbound side of that block is closed to traffic as a result. In previous discussion of the project, WSB readers noted that SW Edmunds, one block south, has markings suggesting upcoming work, so we asked SDOT about that. Spokesperson Kari Tupper responded, “There are another 14-16 concrete panels that we are planning to replace in the vicinity of 44th Ave SW & SW Edmunds. This work has not been scheduled as yet. These repairs are a high priority and we are planning to complete them in 2020. Please keep in mind, however, that schedules might be altered by circumstances beyond our control. These circumstances would include budget and crew resource constraints, COVID-19 impacts, and so forth. If we are able to complete this project, the work will be completed over 2 to 3 weekends due to the high number of panels involved.”
We start Saturday – a busy day for road work – with a reminder that SW Genesee is closed all weekend between Delridge and 25th SW as part of the big RapidRide-readiness project. It’s scheduled to reopen by 5 am Monday, with another closure next Friday-Sunday. SDOT says its contractor is expected to wrap up work by 10 each night (but has a noise-variance permit if they miss that cutoff – note that you might hear nighttime noise from unrelated private construction). SW Alaska – temporarily reopened – and SW Andover are west-east detour routes. Metro Route 50 is being rerouted.
Also closed this weekend, and several other upcoming weekends – the Delridge Community Center parking-lot entrance. Road-rebuilding work is happening on that side:
Starting next Wednesday (August 12), paving operations will move to the east side of Delridge in that area, between Genesee and Alaska. SDOT says it will “connect with residents in this area to share information on how to access their driveways during this work” – but if you have any concerns/questions, you can reach the project team at DelridgeTransit@seattle.gov or 206-775-8739.
For the full rundown on what’s happening with the Delridge project during the coming week, read this.
5:41 PM: Thanks for the tip: SFD is dispatching to a reported 2-car crash at 36th/Barton. Texter tells us this area has seen a “tremendous increase in traffic since the bridge closure.”
6 PM: One damaged car is on the scene blocking the westbound lane. Police are investigating this as a hit-and-run.
6:33 PM: Just went back through; scene is cleared.
ADDED SATURDAY: We’ve heard from the victim’s brother: “He says all he saw was a ‘flash of silver, maybe an SUV, airbags and smoke, then someone was opening my door.’ The offending car was gone. We want to see if anyone in the neighborhood might have cameras that point to that intersection, or perhaps drivers that May have witnessed the incident. He can be reached at Pete 206.383.7185.”
In addition to the two projects noted in our morning roundup – the SW Genesee closure west of Delridge and the SW Alaska closure west of California – the city has just sent word of even more work this weekend. Here’s the announcement:
This weekend (August 8-9), SDOT crews will be working throughout West Seattle, including at the 16th Ave SW and SW Holden St intersection.
At the 16th Ave SW and SW Holden St intersection, SDOT will be putting in new turn pockets so drivers can make protected left turns to go east and west on SW Holden St. To limit the cut-through traffic on 20th Ave SW, SDOT will be installing new signs to better identify the arterial streets near the intersection. In addition, SDOT will also be making signal timing adjustments to help people get through the intersection better.
SDOT will also be tree trimming on West Marginal Way, Sylvan Way SW, and SW Orchard St. This tree trimming work will improve roadway and sign visibility for people commuting.
During all of this work, there will be temporary lane closures, traffic control, flaggers, and uniform police officers working in the street. Please plan ahead for additional travel time and delays if you are going through any of these areas. Thank you for your patience while SDOT makes these improvements.
Since this isn’t time specific – please let us know when you see the crews, if you can, but NOT while you’re driving or pedaling … when you get to where you’re going! We’re always reachable, text/voice, at 206-293-6302.
6:16 AM: It’s Friday, the 137th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.
ROAD WORK/CLOSURES
*As part of the RapidRide H Line project, SW Genesee will close between 25th and Delridge starting at 9 am today and continuing all weekend. Access east of Avalon will be “local only.” Metro Route 50 will be rerouted – here are the details.
*More West Seattle Junction road work tomorrow, repairing pavement on SW Alaska west of California.
*No 1st Ave. S. Bridge northbound closure tonight – that work is expected to resume Sunday night.

A major closure is coming up as part of the Delridge Way work paving the way for converting Metro Route 120 to the RapidRide H Line – and SDOT has clarified the hours: SW Genesee St will be closed between 25th Ave SW and Delridge Way SW, 9 am Friday (August 7) until 5 am Monday (August 10). During the weekend closure, crews might work as late as 10 pm, SDOT says. The Delridge Community Center parking lot entrance on Delridge south of SW Genesee will also be closed to vehicle access for what SDOT describes as “several weekends,” starting this Friday night. It will be accessible on weekdays.
6:16 AM: It’s Wednesday, the 135th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.

10:51 AM: Thanks for the tip: SW Alaska is closed between 44th and California right now for road repair work. No advance announcement, so we don’t know exactly what they’re doing or how long it’ll take, but we’re headed over to check.
11:05 AM: This work is closing the westbound side of SW Alaska in that block but NOT the eastbound side. The crew, from SDOT, says it’s scheduled road-repair work and will take much of today, with plans to continue next Saturday (we’ll check with SDOT Monday to narrow that down).
7:41 PM: We went by a little while ago. That section of westbound SW Alaska is still closed off – so the concrete can dry.
SDOT crews will be back on Sylvan Way this Sunday, cutting more trees and other vegetation to improve visibility. The work is planned for 9 am to 4 pm and will include lane reductions; uniformed officers wiil be there to direct traffic. Meantime, SDOT has reiterated that radar-equipped speed-limit signs are on order – as first reported here last week – with four planned, to try to slow down speeders on the increasingly popular route for bridge-detour traffic.
