(Reader photo from Mark after crosswalk’s installation in August)
As we’ve been reporting, today was the day SDOT said it would switch traffic flow again across the Admiral Way Bridge, as the earthquake-strengthening project continues, while also removing the temporary crosswalk at 39th SW. Project spokesperson Matthew Howard just sent word of a change:
The work we originally had planned for December 19-20 on the Admiral Way bridge will not occur. The new date for the traffic shift will occur on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
When we transition into our third phase of traffic control on December 31, the two center lanes on Admiral Way SW will be closed during this phase, with one lane in each direction open for people driving. As part of this transition, the temporary crosswalk at Admiral Way SW and 39th Ave SW will be removed.
SDOT doesn’t expect the project to be fully completed before summer.
6:03 AM: Good morning! Welcome to Thursday, December 19th.

As part of this transition, the temporary crosswalk at Admiral Way SW and 39th Ave SW will be removed.”

A look reader asked about a backup on the westbound low bridge. Earlier today, in the 6 am hour, it had mechanical trouble, but that’s not what’s happening right now – there’s a long backup of trucks, as shown on both the west- and east-facing cameras. No ships in at T-5 according to VesselFinder, so that’s not the cause; we’re checking to see if there’s any other unusual circumstance.
UPDATE: The terminal operator is having “network issues,” according to the NW Seaport Alliance.
6:00 AM: Good morning! Welcome to Monday, December 16th.

Crews on the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project will take Christmas week off. But first, they’re planning to switch the traffic flow again this week, on Thursday, at which time SDOT says the temporary crosswalk at 39th SW will be removed:
We’ll be transitioning into our third phase of traffic control on December 19. The two center lanes on Admiral Way SW will be closed during this phase, with one lane in each direction open for people driving. As part of this transition, the temporary crosswalk at Admiral Way SW and 39th Ave SW will be removed.
They’re also projecting that construction might last into the summer, spokesperson Matthew Howard tells WSB. (The projection was spring when the work began back in July.) The current phase of work involves “continuing to drill and epoxy in anchor dowels and … beginning to repair cracks on the piers.” Also ahead, “removing paint from the bridge’s steel truss members and … retrofitting this component with gusset plates in the coming weeks.” After the Christmas-week pause, work will resume December 30th. Fairmount Avenue beneath the bridge, meantime, will remain closed until the end of construction.
6:07 AM: Good morning! Welcome to Friday, December 13th.

6:23 PM: Seattle Fire has sent a “rescue extrication” response to the 4800 block of West Marginal Way. We don’t know if it’s related to the earlier report of a crash – the address checks to the same area. Rescuers arriving in the area are saying “all the occupants appear to be OK.” Updates to come.
6:25 PM: SFD now says no one needs to be extricated, so they’re downsizing. the response – but West Marginal Way SW is blocked both ways because of the response, so avoid the area.
6:43 PM: Officers told dispatch that southbound traffic is flowing again.
The photo is from Amy, who reports that crash is on West Marginal Way SW about a block south of the Duwamish Longhouse. Amy says traffic is sluggish as a result. No SFD dispatch so far, which suggests no injuries reported.
8:20 AM: Thanks for the tip. Crash at Delridge/Orchard.
9:17 AM: Added photo sent by Mel. Checking with SFD re: injuries, though only one engine was sent, suggesting no major injuries. Nearest traffic cam suggests the scene has cleared. (added) SFD confirms, no injuries.

Delridge cameras: Besides the one below (Delridge/Genesee), cameras are also at Delridge/Juneau, Delridge/Henderson, Delridge/Oregon, and video-only (so you have to go to the map), Delridge/Holden and Delridge/Thistle.
MORE TRAFFIC CAMS: All functioning traffic cams citywide are here; West Seattle and vicinity-relevant cameras are on this WSB page.
See trouble on the bridges/streets/paths/water? Please text or call our hotline (when you can do it safely, and after you’ve reported to authorities if they’re not already on scene) – 206-293-6302. Thank you!
11:50 PM: For those asking about the police/fire response at Admiral/Stevens – it was dispatched as a man in his 30s either jumping or falling out of a moving car. He’s been taken to the hospital. We’re checking with SFD on his condition when transported.
ADDED MONDAY MORNING: SFD says the man was in stable condition.
1:17 PM: Thanks for the tips. Traffic is backing up on the westbound West Seattle Bridge because of a crash and emergency response near the Delridge exit. If you have to head that way, be patient – or wait a while.
1:20 PM: One texter says the backup is primarily on the exit ramp itself.
1:39 PM: Thanks to commenter Agen for posting the photo bearing that out. SFD has now cleared, to underscore Agen’s report of no apparent senior injuries.
5:21 PM: Thanks for the tip. Northbound 35th is blocked north of Morgan because of a crash. Apparently no major injuries; one SFD engine was dispatched but already has been dismissed.
5:40 PM: Tow truck’s now on scene.
5:59 PM: Officers just told dispatch the street’s open all ways. We’re checking with SFD re: if anyone was hurt.
