ROAD WORK: Repaving on south stretch of 35th SW

Thanks to Amy for the tip on this – repaving work is under way toward the south end of 35th SW in Arbor Heights. We hadn’t heard/seen about this in advance, nor apparently had some in the area, but here’s what SDOT told us when we inquired:

SDOT crews are repairing worn pavement by replacing the top layer of asphalt on 35th Ave SW between SW 106th St and SW 108th St. Construction hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the road will be fully open at other times. During construction, 35th Ave SW is reduced to a single lane with flaggers to control traffic in alternating directions.

If we continue to experience good weather, there is a good chance that the work will be completed by 4 p.m. today. If crews do not finish today, then they expect to complete the project tomorrow.

We’ve asked SDOT if any other repaving projects are coming up soon in West Seattle; with the weather warming, we’re going into road-work season.

REPORT #1: 2025 West Seattle 5K on Alki, the early going

9:35 AM: The West Seattle 5K is on! Almost 1,700 runners and walkers just left the start/finish line near 61st/Alki, headed east/northeast. Alki and Harbor Avenues are closed to through traffic in the area until after the 5K. Updates and lots of coverage to come!

9:46 AM: The first finishers have crossed the line! Kevin Hansen, 41, was first to finish, in 15:43.

10:41 AM: Down to stragglers now so the plan to reopen the streets around 11 looks to be on track. We’ll have a full report separately later! (ADDED: See that here.)

TRAFFIC ALERT: Westbound bridge’s west end reopened

5:43 PM: Traffic headed toward the west end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge is being detoured onto Admiral. We are not seeing any current crash reports but a reader did note that jersey barriers in the area were out of place earlier.

6:02 PM: Checking the live camera, westbound traffic is flowing to the Fauntleroy end of the bridge, so the blockage/closure is over.

And big backups are reported with both. Even once the scenes are clear, backups take a while longer to dissipate.

2:42 PM: The I-5 crash scene is clear, per WSDOT, which says the I-90 crash scene is in cleanup mode.

UPDATE: Harbor Avenue reopens after tree trouble resolved

May 6, 2025 12:02 pm
|    Comments Off on UPDATE: Harbor Avenue reopens after tree trouble resolved
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

12:02 PM: According to police-radio exchanges, a tree hit by a truck has fallen into overhead cables across part of the 3200 block of Harbor Avenue, and it’s causing trouble as other trucks continue hitting it, so police are working to close that stretch of the street until it can be removed. We’re heading over for a look.

12:47 PM: Couldn’t get a photo but avoid the Harbor/ Spokane intersection. Drivers are being diverted east and uphill via City View to Admiral and it’s gridlock on very narrow streets.

1:32 PM: Not resolved yet. We tried to get close enough for a photo from the north end, but that closure starts blocks north of the scene.

1:38 PM: According to radio exchanges, a tree crew is on scene now and hopes to have the tree removed within an hour.

2:08 PM: Officers just announced Harbor Avenue has reopened both ways.
