6:18 PM: Thanks for the tips and photos. The big emergency response in Seaview is for that car-on-side crash at 44th/Juneau. Apparently no major injuries, as the SFD call has already closed, 15 minutes after dispatch.

STOLEN BICYCLE: Kathleen hopes you will watch for this stolen bicycle:

She left the garage open for a little while around noon today in North Delridge – and a thief quickly made off with the bike, a white Univega. We are waiting to hear back on the police-report #, so in the meantime, let us know if you see it and we will connect you.

STOLEN VEHICLE TENT: Nick reports from Seaview, “I had a Cascade Vehicle Tent (CVT) Mt Shasta tent stolen off my truck last night. My truck was parked in front of my house. If anyone sees one for sale, please let me know.” SPD incident # is 19-157402.

12:19 PM: Last week we reported that this area was experiencing the city’s highest percentage increase in motor-vehicle theft. The trend doesn’t seem to have slowed. Two more reported this morning:

CONTRACTOR’S TRUCK STOLEN: That’s Jackie‘s truck. She says it was stolen in Highland Park, and adds:

My work truck was stolen between Monday evening 8 pm and Tues morning 8 am. I am a general contractor and it has all my tools in it. Black Ford F250 Diesel Lariat Crew cab with gray canopy. Army sticker on back. License B39968F. This truck is my livelihood. I have been a woman owned and operated GC in West Seattle for 20 years.

We asked her if there are any particular tools people should watch out for: “Hilti Roto hammer, Dewalt impact driver set 18v, Makita 12v impact driver, Milwaukee Sawzall, but nothing distinctive just expensive tools.”

RED CIVIC HATCHBACK STOLEN: Kelly sent the photo and report on behalf of her sister:

My sister’s Red Honda Civic EX hatchback, 1994, stolen either last night or early this morning 10/29-10/30 on the corner of SW Graham and 48th Ave SW. (Seaview/Morgan Junction) As you can see in the photo there are a couple of stickers on the rear window and the license plate is #BHL5092. She is recently divorced and homeless and this is all she’s got. We would be forever indebted if someone located this car for her! Thank you in advance.

If you see either stolen vehicle, call 911 immediately. WSB readers have spotted at least two so far already this week; police say stolen cars are most often used to get from point to point and then dumped, so they could be anywhere.

STOLEN BLACK HIGHLANDER: Maybe you can do for Jill what Kathy did for Patsy earlier today – find her stolen car. Jill’s 2013 black Toyota Highlander with a black cargo box was stolen just over the line in White Center tonight, near the roller rink. “It was pretty much out of gas, so I hope it didn’t go too far,” Jill says. Plate BEC5570. Call 911 if you see it.

CAR WINDOWS BROKEN: From David in Gatewood:

I live on SW Webster Street (3700 block), and we came out to go somewhere at around 3 pm, and saw that someone had broken the driver’s side window on our red Forester that we park in front of our
home. After a cursory cleanup, we drove up the street and saw that at least one other car had gotten the same treatment — broken window, glass on the street. Nothing was taken, they just broke the window. So for those of you tracking that sort of thing, it’s still happening.

CAR PROWL: From Jerry in Seaview:

Our car was prowled sometime last night or early evening today. It was locked, so no idea how the perp got in. Some change was missing and no damage. 5900 block of 46th between Raymond and Juneau. Be aware!

‘Supercar’ ZwingRally due to cruise Alki on Saturday morning

Just found out about this from Seattle Police at the West Seattle Block Watch Captains Network meeting: The “supercar” rally promoted in the video above is due to take an Alki lap on Saturday morning. It’s called the ZwingRally, and it promises a luxury experience for up to 120 “super cars” and their drivers/passengers at $1,250 per person for the weekend. On Saturday morning at 9:15 am, according to the ZwingRally website, they’ll head out from downtown to Alki, and then after “a lap,” they’re headed south to Portland. We’ll be pinging the organizer to see what else we can find out.

UPDATE: House fire in 5900 block 47th SW; started in kitchen, SFD says

10:24 PM: Seattle Fire has sent a “full response” to a house in the 5900 block of 47th SW [map]. They are describing it as a “kitchen fire” and also saying there’s heavy smoke from the front door. More to come.

10:31 PM: Firefighters are still searching the house to make sure everyone got out OK. The fire has been declared “under control” and they’re checking to be sure it hasn’t spread.

10:39 PM: Firefighters believe the fire is confined to the main floor of the house – they’ve checked the basement and attic to be sure.

10:56 PM: At the scene, we are told the fire’s out and under investigation. No one hurt; everyone got out OK.

SATURDAY, 11:14 AM: SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley tells WSB that the fire was caused by “unattended food on the stove, ruled accidental … estimated loss is $150,000 to structure and $50,000 to contents.”

Flipped-car crash in Seaview

Thanks to Doug B for the photo from a flipped-car crash at 44th SW and SW Graham in Seaview this past hour. We missed it because it was originally dispatched as a “heavy rescue” to 44th South and South Graham, miles away, and didn’t catch the correction – by which time it was re-dispatched with only one engine after all, and the incident log shows that engine left two minutes after arriving, indicating no injuries of note.

Motorcycle rider to hospital after Seaview collision

A motorcycle rider was taken to the hospital by private ambulance after a collision about half an hour ago in the Seaview area. Authorities cleared the scene quickly; a witness says the rider was headed southbound on 48th SW and hit by a driver headed east on Juneau. That’s all we could find out; private ambulance indicates the injuries weren’t life-threatening.

Three West Seattle Crime Watch reader reports tonight:

SNACK SHACK BURGLARIES: We took that photo two months ago today, the day West Seattle Baseball proudly dedicated their long-awaited new “snack shack” at the Pee Wee baseball field in Riverview. today, WS Baseball board member and parent Zach Jones sent this reader report for Crime Watch:

The new snack shack at the Pee Wee Fields has been broken into twice in the past week. The first break-in happened last Thursday night 8/3 and again Tuesday night 8/8. The thieves broke in through side vents (which have since been secured with welded bars) and stole our iPad min, a small amount of cash, all of our snacks/food, and other miscellaneous items. They also destroyed our cash register.

They also tried to gain access through the side door by some sort of torch but were unsuccessful. There was a trail of snacks going east down the hill where there are several homeless camps. It’s likely that one of them has committed this crime. We have filed a police report with SPD.

Lots of parents in West Seattle Baseball worked especially hard to raise money and hundreds of volunteer hours went into opening this for all the families of our league. It’s disappointing to put so much effort into this project and have someone ruin it. BACKPACKS & HAT STOLEN: From Shannon in Seaview:

We had our car loaded with camping gear for a camping trip and parked in our front yard just a few feet from our front door, and someone smashed the window, on 48th between Findlay and Juneau.

Luckily, they weren’t interested in our camping gear, but they did steal our backpacks. I suspect they probably ditched them once they realized there weren’t any electronics or anything easily pawned inside them. I am writing in hopes someone will come across them dumped in the bushes or something. One taupe-colored Camelback-brand day pack with first-aid kit inside and one blue and gray Kelty daypack with a Camelback, bright lime green North Face raincoat, and a baseball hat. The baseball hat is dark blue with a light pink script capital “I” on it. I really really want the hat back more than anything, for sentimental reasons. I can be contacted at mitts1212@yahoo.com.

PACKAGE THEFT: Anita e-mailed today to report, “We had a package stolen from (SW) Findlay yesterday sometime after 12:00 noon that was delivered by UPS … Don’t know if this is something going on with other people in the area or not.”

Thanks to the person who just called to let us know: She’s seeing brown water in Seaview (she’s near 45th SW/SW Juneau), and it’s because Seattle Fire crews are continuing to test hydrants. She’s already contacted Seattle Public Utilities (their hotline is 206-386-1800) to be sure they know too. (Yesterday, it was west of The Junction; the day before, Arbor Heights.)

7:26 AM: Seattle Fire is sending a big “heavy rescue” response to the 6000 block of 44th SW [map], where a car is reported to be on its side, with one person possibly trapped. More to come.

7:41 AM: Photo added. The vehicle that went sideways is a car2go Smart Fortwo car. Two people were inside, our crew has learned at the scene, and both got out OK, no injuries. At least one parked car is damaged.

7:52 AM: Another photo. Tow truck has already arrived and SFD has left so the street should be clear before long.

Two more West Seattle Crime Watch notes:

SEAVIEW PROWLERS: Just got a call on our 24/7 line (206-293-6302) from a Seaview resident who says two prowlers were in and around his neighbors’ garage, between 47th and 48th and Raymond and Graham, about an hour ago, and took off running when they saw him – descriptive information included white males, beards, hoodies, dark clothing, flashlights. (His neighbors weren’t home at the time but are back now and have been informed, as have police, who he said were in the area looking around.)

MAIL THEFT: Via text, a Westwood-area resident reported: “At 6:45 am on my way to work I noticed mail along 26th SW and 25th SW by SW Thistle. Looks like someone made a spree in opening mailboxes and getting mail and I even saw a few packages open.” The texter was planning to file a police report, last we heard.

In West Seattle (and vicinity) Crime Watch:

THANKS FOR THE TIPS: Received a few about a sizable law-enforcement presence at 15th and Roxbury this past hour. Headed that way and found King County Sheriff’s Office deputies had converged on the gas station at the southwest corner of the intersection. They were searching what one deputy told us was a stolen car; we’ll be following up on our partner site White Center Now.

ADMIRAL BURGLARY: Tyler e-mailed this weekend to share the word about this:

On Wednesday at exactly 12:44 am we had a person enter our property at 53rd and Admiral and break into our garage, stealing wire and several small tools. They then moved a camera out of the way and tried to gain access to a small basement window. They were on site for over 20 minutes.

The house is being sold, so there was no one home and only various tools on site. Police report filed Thursday.

Suspect was wearing black jeans and hooded sweatshirt also in black. He knew there were cameras as face was covered. Had a distinctive large rectangle style back back with straps.

MORE HIGHLAND PARK MAIL THEFT: Shirley in Highland Park wants her neighbors in the 11th/12th/Barton vicinity to “please be aware that there is a lot of mail being taken and thrown on the ground and or put in other mailboxes. On my dog walk this am I found some of my neighbor’s mail in my paper box. This afternoon walking the dog, I found another neighbor’s mail in the alley … Also noticed several mailboxes open along the way.”

STOLEN MAIL FOUND IN SEAVIEW: A reader “found someone’s mail from Ballard (Friday morning) dumped at the corner of 44th SW and SW Graham.” They planned to take it back to the Post Office but added, “I just wanted to let people know to be watchful for thieves using our neighborhood like this.”

UPDATE: 2 people rescued from on-its-side vehicle in Seaview

9:41 AM: Big Seattle Fire/Police response en route right now to 49th SW and SW Graham (map) in Seaview, where a two-car crash is reported, one said to be “on its side” per the dispatch. More to come.

9:44 AM: First SFD crew at the scene confirms one vehicle, an SUV, is on its side and two people are inside – they’re checking on injuries as well as how to get them out. The response is being upgraded to “heavy rescue,” which means even more SFD vehicles headed that way.

9:52 AM: They’re getting the two people out now. Some of the responding units are being canceled.

9:58 AM: Our crew at the scene confirms both people are out of the vehicle that went into a tree on the SE corner of 49th/Graham; the other vehicle is a silver Volvo still out in the intersection.

Lots of SFD units still in the area so stay clear – 49th is residential but 48th, one block east, is a minor arterial through the area.

10:04 AM: Per our crew, the two people who were cut out of that vehicle – you’ll note that its roof is now missing, as shown in our top photo – will be taken to a hospital for evaluation, by private ambulance.

10:32 AM: The flipped Hyundai was headed eastbound on Graham, the Volvo northbound on 49th, when they collided, police tell us, as they continue investigating. The Volvo’s driver was unhurt.

West Seattle Crime Watch: One bike stolen, one left in its place

Mark is looking for both his stolen bike and the owner of a bike that turned up where his had been: “The curious thing was that whoever took my bike (adult size) left an almost brand-new child’s-size bike. I assume they felt mine was an upgrade.” It happened on Sunday afternoon in Seaview, 47th/Findlay (map). Here’s the bike left behind:

It’s a “small Giant,” he adds. His stolen bike is “a dark gray Diamondback Trace with Planet Bike fenders and a black rear rack.” Seen it? And/or have any idea who the left-behind bike belongs to?

West Seattle Crime Watch update: Tire-slashing rampage overnight; reward fund set up to find out who did it

12:18 PM: We don’t have an official count – and probably won’t be able to get one before Monday – but multiple people have reported multiple tire-slashings along 48th SW in the Seaview area overnight. Heading over just now for a look, we found the vehicle above – a neighbor, figuring out what to do about his own tire-slashed vehicle, said the SUV’s owner was off making arrangements; Doug had sent a photo earlier of that same SUV before the vandalized tires were removed, and said he saw four others plus a police officer talking to someone. This was near 48th/Juneau; a commenter reported being hit near 48th/Findlay. Even if some have already reported it, the more individual reports in the system, the better, so if it happened to you, please do file a report – you can even do it online.

3:01 PM UPDATE: We’ve heard estimates of more than 30 cars vandalized in this incident. Some neighbors are starting up a fund with a reward for information leading to the person(s) who did it. Several neighbors also have responded to our request for additional photos – this one just in, with the tipster noting, “Our poor neighbor’s car – all 4 tires”:

Two reader reports to share this afternoon. First, from Kevin:

I’m writing to let you know that my 1996 Honda Accord was stolen off the street from in front of my house last night between midnight and 7 AM. I live in the 6000 block of 46th AVE SW between SW Graham and SW Raymond streets. It’s a four door Accord LX model. Maroon/Burgandy color. WA license plate 865 TZD. If you see it or have any information, please call the Seattle Police Dept.

(SPD suggests 911 if you see a stolen car.) Meantime, Jenni – who is a Block Watch captain in Highland Park – says they’re not taking car prowlers lightly in her neighborhood. This happened early Wednesday:

I went to check why my dog was barking& noted white male late 40s with graying facial hair trying to break into my neighbors SUV. I asked what he was doing and he fled via silver/gray 2 door sedan possibly ford no plate number obtained. I called 911 and some of our block watch went out on foot to patrol the surrounding streets. So, just another note about neighborhood block watch and calling police immediately.

She hasn’t heard whether an arrest was made, but notes that police arrived within five minutes of the 911 call. Meantime, Highland Park and other south West Seattle neighborhoods might be interested in this White Center event tonight: In case you missed the notice in our morning preview or on White Center Now, gang-activity trends, Metro Transit safety, and other topics are all on the agenda for the first in a series of Public Safety Forums presented by the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council, all welcome, 7 pm tonight at North Highline Fire District headquarters (1243 SW 112th – here’s a map).

You don’t have to wait for Night Out to have a block party … tonight, we got word of two in West Seattle. First note in announced the 2nd annual Seaview Swine-Que – last year’s edition was in September (just as well they didn’t wait this year, at this rate we may have fall snow). Can’t have a Swine-Que without the swine:

Just out of the inbox from Nick, who says this happened less than two hours ago, about 10:30 pm:

Hey, just wanted to let people know that I was jogging Friday night in Seaview on 48th Ave SW between SW Findlay St & SW Brandon St [map] when I got hit about 20 times by some punks with what I’m pretty sure were fully automatic pellet guns. Luckily I was wearing long shorts and a baggy sweatshirt so I only got hit 3 times on my body, but they left some decent-sized marks, including a raised welt on my wrist. Didn’t get the plates at the time as I didn’t think of it until about 15 seconds after they were gone, but it was an average-sized sedan with either a black or dark colored paint job. Multiple people inside, they were heading north. I believe this is similar to a story I read on here not too long ago if I’m not mistaken. I reported it when I got home. Let’s get these cowards off our streets, people. They can really hurt you if you were to get hit in the eye or something.

Nick may be referring to this Crime Watch roundup, which included a report of pellets/BBs fired at a West Seattle home.

Update: Flipped car in Seaview, driver taken to hospital

11:55 PM: We’re on our way to the 6400 block of 48th SW (map), where fire crews have just arrived at the scene of a “heavy rescue” call and are reporting a car has flipped.

12:09 AM: One person was pulled out of the car, a woman described on the scanner as alert and conscious.

12:19 AM: Tow truck just arrived at the scene, so 48th should be clear before too long. The driver was taken by Medic 32 to Harborview Medical Center. The Saturn sedan she was driving had flipped right in front of the bus stop on the west side of 48th, just at the top of the hill down toward Lowman Beach. A lieutenant at the scene tells WSB’s Christopher Boffoli that the driver’s injuries are not life-threatening. Police also say they suspect alcohol might have been involved.

12:44 AM: 48th SW has reopened to traffic.

2:07 AM: Added Christopher’s video of the car being turned right-side-up by the tow crew.

Speed bumps on 48th SW in Seaview: Meeting next Thursday

It’s a straightaway from Seaview toward Genesee – and many neighbors say drivers tend to treat that section of 48th SW like a drag strip. They asked the city for help, and now four sets of speed bumps between Brandon and Graham (map) are closer to reality. SDOT says they are slated for installation in September, provided they work out the details with the neighborhood. Next step, a community meeting at 7 pm Thursday (May 19th) at Seaview Methodist Church (thanks to Barb for sharing the official flyer distributed to neighbors – see it, with a photo of the proposed bumps, here).

1st Annual Seaview Swine-Que: One last ‘summer’ block party

Suddenly this pig-roasting thing is quite the West Seattle trend. First Fresh Bistro did it – then last Sunday, Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor) – and tonight, neighbors around 47th/Brandon threw a party they called the 1st Annual Seaview Swine-Que – mostly before the big rain started in again. We got the tip from Shelly, seen here holding little Gabi:

Shelly had explained via e-mail, “Several local families came together to plan this fun event and The Beer Junction was gracious enough to sponsor it,” going on to say the event was a “testament to good ol’ fashioned neighborhood spirit in West Seattle.” Reminded us a bit of the last time we went around checking on neighborhood spirit, it was Night Out block party night on August 4th, so we got a group portrait here too:
