West Seattle, Washington
28 Thursday
Local nonprofits have been called on to help sustain the community more than ever this past pandemic year – but they’ve also had to fight for funding, without in-person galas, with many routine donors struggling. But they’re coming up with creative ways to keep going. The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association has launched its major spring fundraiser by counting down to its online “Destination Delridge: Live from the Heart” event at 7 pm March 13th. Everyone who donates in the days leading up to the event will get a ticket to the event. DNDA hopes to raise $90,000 to sustain the art, nature, and neighborhood programs it continues to present. You can donate and/or buy a ticket (with a dinner option!) by going here.

12:01 PM: The pandemic interrupted Girl Scout Cookie in-person sales last year, and “cookie booths” won’t be back this year. But it is cookie season nonetheless, and here’s a new way to support your local Girl Scouts: Starting today, the online Cookie Connector has launched. It’s one of three ways to get cookies this year, according to the Girl Scouts of Western Washington website:
1. Cookie Connector – Free Delivery
Use our Cookie Connector tool to get FREE, contact-less delivery! Enter your zip code to get cookies delivered to your door by a local Girl Scout and their trusted adult.2. Ask a Girl Scout – Delivery or Shipping
Support a Girl Scout in your life by buying cookies from them directly. Don’t know any Girl Scouts? Ask your personal or social media network – Girl Scouts are advertising their digital storefronts online.3. Door Hangers – Delivery or Shipping
Local Girl Scouts are distributing physical order forms. Look for Girl Scout Cookie door hangers in your area and follow the instructions to place your order.
See the cookie varieties here.
P.S. In the past, we’ve featured West Seattle troops who let us know about their cookie booths, so anyone who wants to publicize “digital storefronts” as noted above, let us know!
ADDED: Here’s who we’ve heard from:
Troop 41169, raising money to paint a mural in The Junction – here’s their link
Troop 41169 member Akemi‘s link
Troop 44448 member Ava‘s link
Brownie troop 41534’s link

Here’s the link for Olivia with Troop 43136.
Each link will tell you a bit about what that troop or Girl Scout plans to do with their earnings.

Alki UCC was going to host its next food/clothing drive earlier this month – but got snowed out. So it’s now rescheduled to this Sunday. Here’s the announcement we just received:

Two more dine-out fundraisers for local schools, including late word of one happening now:
GENESEE HILL PTA @ CHIPOTLE: Just got word of this – the Genesee Hill Elementary PTA is fundraising with a dine-out event at Chipotle in The Junction (4730 California SW) tonight until 8 pm. If you go, show this flyer (on your phone), which also has a code to use if you order in advance online for pickup.
ALKI ELEMENTARY PTA @ MISSION: This one’s happening Sunday (February 28th) at Mission Cantina (2325 California SW) in Admiral:
We are thrilled to announce that Mission Cantina will generously donate 20% of all sales that the restaurant makes to Alki Elementary PTA on Sunday, February 28th, for their full hours of 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. This includes all food, alcohol, and gift cards!
To order regular menu items please call Mission directly at 206-937-8220 on February 28th. Please note, we are encouraging families to work with the restaurant directly rather than use 3rd party apps such as Grubhub and Ubereats to help the staff get more of the funds from tips and orders.
If you’re thinking about having pizza before the week’s out, two local schools are getting a slice of the proceeds during separate one-day fundraisers at West Seattle’s MOD Pizza locations:
ALKI CO-OP PRESCHOOL: This Thursday (February 25th), MOD Pizza at 4755 Fauntleroy Way SW will donate a share of what you spend to nonprofit Alki Cooperative Preschool. This is important: “Please use our code (GR176595A) or mention Alki Co-op Preschool in store. NO THIRD-PARTY OR PHONE ORDERS PLEASE!” You can order via the website, though. Hours are 10:30 am-10 pm.
LOUISA BOREN STEM K-8: The STEM K-8 PTA has a fundraiser this Sunday (February 28th) at the MOD Pizza at Westwood Village (2600 SW Barton). The code for this one will be GR179557L – or mention the school – and again, you can order in-store or online, for pickup or delivery, directly from MOD. Same hours, 10:30 am-10 pm.
If you haven’t already seen this in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar: You’re invited to join neighbor Conrad for a community cleanup around the West Seattle Bridge tomorrow afternoon. He’s leading volunteers 1-4 pm in a cleanup delayed a week because of the snow:
We’ll meet at the cul-de-sac on SW Marginal Place. We’ll then disperse along W Marginal Way as it passes under Spokane Street (for both trash removal and overgrown vegetation removal), and to parts of the five-way intersection by the Chelan Café. Please wear a mask and get ready to clean up under the bridge.
Thank you to our partners Puget Soundkeeper, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, and We Heart Seattle! Puget Soundkeeper is donating all necessary equipment (trash grabbers, garbage bags, gloves, the scale for weighing trash), DRCC is providing Duwamish Dollars as an incentive for volunteers, and We Heart Seattle is providing a U-Haul truck to take the trash to the transfer station following the event.
RSVP by signing up here.
The community campaign to Save The Stone Cottage continues. Tonight, two notes – first, the results of the final “Story Stones” competition. If you missed the karaoke-style concert/trivia event last Friday night, here’s the first 15 minutes:
At about 6:40 in, you’ll see the first singers, Lora and Steve from the West Seattle Junction Association – then in the final minute, 14 minutes in, Caspar Babypants‘ guest performance. Everyone who showed up for the event on Zoom had the chance to answer trivia questions related to the songs. Winners were Dan and Joanie Jacobs, who get a gift certificate to a West Seattle restaurant and the coveted fourth and final “Story Stone.” Guest performers also included reps from local businesses both musical (including WSB sponsors Thunder Road Guitars and The Bass Shop, and of course Easy Street Records) and not (Husky Deli, Beveridge Place Pub, Salty’s [WSB sponsor], and more). Now, an update on the plan to move the Stone Cottage before its longtime home at 1123 Harbor Avenue SW gets redeveloped:
(January photo by Mark Jaroslaw)
Jeff McCord from Save The Stone Cottage tells WSB, “We don’t know an exact move date due to the developer’s permitting still being underway. We will of course announce more details as we learn them, but we believe it may not occur until sometime in March (or possibly later) at this point.” They’re still actively crowdfunding to pay for the move and a temporary home for the historic stone-studded structure.
ADDED TUESDAY: See the entire concert/music-trivia event here.
While the snow’s been big fun for many people, it’s also caused some trouble, beyond stuck cars and delayed trash pickup. Bloodworks Northwest says 800 people have canceled appointments to donate blood because of the snow and icy roads. So if you can donate sometime soon, please do! If you can give by month’s end, Bloodworks NW says, “Give blood through February 28 and discover if you have COVID-19 antibodies. Positive donors could become convalescent plasma donors and help critically ill coronavirus patients directly.” A little further into the future, we note, you have another chance to donate without leaving West Seattle – the Senior Center in The Junction is hosting pop-up dates in March and April. It’s on the list of locations where donors can make appointments – go here or call 800-398-7888.
On this freezing night, it’s heartwarming to know that some neighbors have coats and other warm clothing because of community generosity. The annual donation drive coordinated by Dave Newman State Farm Agency (WSB sponsor) drew the most donations ever, the agency reports:
Thanks, West Seattle!
The West Seattle Helpline annual clothing drive has once again been a big success! This year’s donations from generous friends and neighbors allow the West Seattle Helpline to assist local citizens at a critical time of year.
The clothing drive at Dave Newman State Farm Agency happens every year in December and January. This year marked the most donations we have ever received – THANKS, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. And thanks to volunteers like lifelong West Seattle resident Rodger Tanner, who not only volunteers with the clothing drive every year but also assists the Helpline with facilities, maintenance and equipment.
Watch for the clothing drive at the end of this year – December and January are hard cold months for many citizens.
Respectfully,
Dave Newman
You can help the Clothesline clothing bank year-round, too – here’s how.
If you can give in this time when so many more need help, consider involvement with Impact 100 Seattle. With membership open now, they’re sponsoring WSB to let you know what they do:
Impact 100 Seattle is a women’s collective-giving organization, employing trust-based philanthropy. We connect women to each other and local nonprofits, harnessing the collective strength of our community to support transformative change in the Puget Sound region.
The organization launched in 2019 and in 2020 granted $100,000 to a handful of small, community-based nonprofits in the Seattle area: Community Passageways, East African Community Services, Para los Niños, Somali Family Safety Task Force, and Y-We. These organizations are run by members of their community – four out of five are run by women, women of color. We believe that the leaders of these organizations have a vision and a way to connect with the communities that they are serving to make a lasting impact.
In addition to trust-based philanthropy, our decisions around grants are based on the following key principles: Partner for transformative change; embrace risk; listen, learn, and evolve. We build partnerships with our grantee recipients and provide support beyond the check.
Membership for 2021 closes on March 31st, 2021 – join Impact 100 Seattle to make an impact!
We thank Impact 100 Seattle for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.
(Photos courtesy West Seattle Bee Garden)
The West Seattle Bee Garden – which took shape from an idea voiced here nine years ago – is hoping for helpers to carry on its essential task – education. Founder Lauren explains:
During this time of uncertainty, the West Seattle Bee Garden is also in a period of transition. Our volunteers who previously hosted field trips with local students are no longer available, and we’re seeking new recruits! The garden was created with the goal of educating Seattle residents about our ecosystems and importance of pollination, and we hope to keep our educational reach as strong as possible!
The WSBG hosted VERY limited groups in 2020 during the pandemic, and we foresee continued limited gathering in 2021. With information to guide safe decision making, we think hosting some groups outdoors is possible. Of course masks and social distancing will be required.
Since its opening in 2013, the garden has historically hosted 20-40 field trips per year, with primarily elementary-school-aged groups – typically on weekday mornings between 10 am and noon (timing is flexible). Field trips usually start with a 15-minute talk, followed by looking at the bees – although all ideas for creating educational experiences are welcome. Opening the hives has historically been included during field trips (and is admittedly a highlight), but this step is not required. Spare beehive components, large photos of bees, and information to learn the presentation material are also available. The adjacent pollination garden and P-Patch create wonderful opportunities to learn about plants, as well as their symbiotic relationship with bees. The WSBG is part of Commons Park in the High Point Neighborhood – the park provides a playground and large green space for students to play and eat lunch.
I am personally saddened by my inability to host field trips any more, due to a change in my work schedule. Witnessing the excitement and awe of children learning routinely brought joy to my days. On occasion I had the pleasure of witnessing local children return to the garden, and enthusiastically teach their parents what they had learned during a recent field trip. It is truly a rewarding experience.
We’re hoping to recruit volunteers who can meet with groups interested in coming to learn. I will continue to field email requests from teachers and group leaders, and help facilitate. The WSBG does not charge for field trips because we want to make access to education available to all. We do encourage donations from those able to donate. It is important for volunteers to reliably meet with groups at the coordinated times, as much effort and expense (buses) are utilized to organize and transport students.

Two ways to buy locally made cake with good deeds on the side:
QUARANTINE-A-VERSARY CAKE: In the photo above is Hailey, a West Seattle student and entrepreneur whose business Hailey’s Cakes and Bakes is offering cakes for the upcoming anniversary of a day most of us will likely never forget:
March 12th will signify the day Governor Inslee ordered a stay at home order in King County, Seattle Public Schools closed, and toilet paper became sparse due to the onset of a global pandemic. I am bringing back toilet paper cakes for purchase in the Seattle area in hopes of bringing levity and basic supplies to our community. Each cake is the size of a roll of toilet paper, the perfect size for one family to enjoy. With each cake ordered, a pack of toilet paper will be donated to assist those who continue to struggle with basic needs. You can order the cakes including a humorous add-on through my website here.
(Though the full statewide stay-home order wasn’t until March 23rd – same day as the West Seattle Bridge closure – March 12th was a benchmark day because of the school shutdown and other closures.)
1 MORE DAY FOR VALENTINE’S CUPCAKE FUNDRAISER: Tomorrow is your last day to get in on the Valentine’s Day specials from BAKED in The Admiral District.
We first mentioned this two weeks ago – two Valentine’s Day offers, with 10 percent going to Mary’s Place, a nonprofit that works to get families out of homelessness (with a White Center shelter among its locations): A DIY cupcake-decorating kit, or a cupcake/cookie combo (in partnership with Jenn’s Cookie Jar). Order no later than tomorrow, and choose pickup (2604 California SW) on either February 12th or February 13th.
More partnerships between local schools and local businesses:
MISSION CANTINA DINE-OUT FOR FAIRMOUNT PARK ELEMENTARY: This is happening on Sunday at Mission Cantina (WSB sponsor). From the Fairmount Park Elementary PTA:
We are excited to partner with Mission Cantina for our next Dine-Out Event! Mission Cantina will generously donate 20% of ALL sales that the restaurant makes on February 7th, for their full hours of 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. No need for a special code or link! This includes all food, alcohol, and gift cards.
To order, please call Mission directly at 206-937-8220. The restaurant will begin taking phone orders starting at 11 am. Please note, we are encouraging families to work with the restaurant directly rather than use 3rd-party apps such as GrubHub and Ubereats, to help the staff get more of the funds from tips and orders.
So enjoy brunch, lunch, dinner, evening margaritas, or all of them! Avoid the rush by buying a gift card to use another day! Thank you for supporting a local restaurant AND the PTA!
Mission Cantina is at 2325 California SW.
DREAM DINNERS DEAL FOR ‘WEB’ AT MADISON: Dream Dinners-West Seattle (WSB sponsor) does the prep, you finish at home and serve! They’re offering three chances to get family meals and support WEB at Madison Middle School, as explained by faculty coordinator Mike Kreiger: “Madison’s WEB (‘Where Everybody Belongs’) Program consists of about 90 eighth-grade leaders who help make the school a more inclusive place. They plan and run the 6th-grade orientation, give tours to new students, and make relationships with new-to-Madison students. They meet during advisory and lunch and plan fun ‘get-to-know-you activities’ with the 6th graders to make them feel connected to Madison.” Here’s how the fundraiser works:
By helping WEB and a local small-business, your money has a DOUBLE positive impact in our community. For $50 you can get three 3-serving meals (9 servings total), and $10 of that will go straight to Madison’s WEB program for next year. You can pay online up to 36 hours before the pickup time, and then just pick up during your window and you have 3 pre-made meals that are ready to cook! Here are the dates (and links, with menu options) to our fundraiser if you can help:
Thursday, March 4th 6:30 pm-7:30 pm – dreamdinners.com/session/875439
Saturday, March 6th at 10:30-11:30 am – dreamdinners.com/session/875440
Wednesday, March 10th at 6:30-7:30 pm – dreamdinners.com/session/875441If you are not interested in Dream Dinners at this time, we are asking for donations of $10 (or more) to keep WEB going strong. If you can help, here is the donation link.

Back during the holiday season, BAKED in Admiral raised money for the West Seattle Food Bank by donating part of the proceeds from what turned out to be a very popular gingerbread-house kit. Now BAKED has two Valentine’s Day offers, with 10 percent going to Mary’s Place, a nonprofit that works to get families out of homelessness (with a White Center shelter among its locations): A DIY cupcake-decorating kit, or a cupcake/cookie combo (in partnership with Jenn’s Cookie Jar). You can order now – before they sell out – and choose pickup on either February 12th or February 13th. BAKED is at 2604 California SW.
One month ago, we reported on Grillbird Teriyaki‘s crowdfunded ‘pay it forward’ concept – customers buying gift cards that are in turn given to people in need. Now proprietor Matt Parker has a new idea, and sent us this announcement:
Our Pay It Forward program has been so successful by gifting out warm meals to those in need this Winter. Just in the last month we have already given out over $3,000 in gift cards! This gave me an idea how we can continue this generosity from our amazing customers.
COVID-19 has proven to be a disruptive force in every manner of life. We cannot overlook how this is affecting educators, the ones who are teaching our youth even in these challenging times. Teaching, a very social and interaction-based profession, has been forced into an isolating experience. Educators are working through the struggles, finding ways to adapt their virtual classrooms to fit our new reality and shifting the goal of teaching.
We want to give a meal to every teacher in West Seattle. We will be gifting out these meals to one teacher a day, but if you would like to help us out so we can reach more teachers, you can purchase a gift card in the available amounts on our online store. At checkout, provide the name and email of the teacher you would like this to go to in the NOTES section, and we will send them a e-gift card in that amount.
Alternatively you can email us the name and email of a special teacher in your life that you would like us to send a gift card to and we will add them to a list that we will send out to over time. matt@grillbird.com
If you haven’t been to Grillbird, it’s at 35th/Morgan.

On December 30th, we reported on that mid-afternoon crash at Fauntleroy/Oregon. SPD sent out the Traffic Control Investigation Squad to investigate, as one driver was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital. Here’s what has happened since then: The 36-year-old woman driving the white vehicle was cited for a red-light violation, and faces $190 in fines. For the driver she hit, the crash’s aftermath is far more costly. The victim’s daughter Emily, a local grocery-store worker, says that her mom is “struggling with broken ribs, a head injury, and deep bone bruising. We found out from my mom’s doc that she has a severe concussion from the accident and her cognitive thinking has been altered, affecting her energy, movements, and moods greatly. The total recovery time is about 6 to 8 months!” She started a crowdfunding account for any community members interested in helping.
We’ve already mentioned two West Seattle events of note for tomorrow’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – here’s another, thanks to a tip from Marlo: Join other community volunteers in a cleanup at Alki Beach, starting at 10:30 am Monday. Details are here. (Anything else? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!)
Today is the 92nd anniversary of the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday is the federal holiday in his honor. From the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, here are two things you can do in West Seattle (please let us know if there are others we can add to this list):
HIGHLAND PARK: Co-sponsored by Highland Park Improvement Club and HP Action Committee:
We have some opportunities to work on demo of the HPIC ceiling, plus trash grabbers and bags for folks to do socially distanced neighborhood cleanup at large. And if you have your own tools and projects at home, join us in spirit!
Tools available at 10 am at Highland Park Improvement Club, 1116 SW Holden. Return pickup tools and collected trash by 3 pm.
Free SDOT traffic mitigation signs available day of event or email HPACtraffic@gmail.com to request alternate pickup.
‘UPROOTING RACISM’: Monday brings the first session in Admiral Church‘s two-track year-long study of “Uprooting Racism” by Paul Kivel. The first track is for “individual introspection,” with monthly meetings, while the second is for organizations, meeting every three months starting in March. For details about timing, course content, book ordering, and registration, go to admiralchurch.org/uprootingracism.
We’ll add anything more we hear about for Monday!
ORIGINAL REPORT: You can support a local school and a local business while simplifying dinner prep – all by getting in on this month’s benefit pickups at Dream Dinners-West Seattle (WSB sponsor).
