Spectators lined the shore by Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor) tonight as the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship returned to West Seattle for a second night, with the downtown skyline providing a bright backdrop. Tonight The Dickens Carolers were on board – here are two of their songs:

The photo is from Khalid Agour of Itto’s Tapas, giving us a peek inside his close-to-opening High Point coffee shop Nos Nos. Our previous update was in September, and we’ve received many requests for an update, so we checked with him. Here’s the status of the shop at 35th/Graham:

We are very excited about Nos Nos opening in the High Point neighborhood to serve our community. Finally the buildout is done. We are now in the process of hiring and training baristas. We are shooting for mid-December. … We can’t wait to open our doors to you all!

Memorial planned December 9 for Elizabeth J. Novotny, 1914-2019

Family and friends will gather December 9th to remember Elizabeth J. “Betty” Novotny. Here’s the remembrance her family is sharing with the community:

Elizabeth J. Novotny
Feb. 24, 1914 – Nov. 26, 2019

Betty passed away just 3 months short of her 106th birthday.

She was born in Chicago and lived in that area until she retired and moved to the Northwest. She lived in West Seattle for 43 years. She is preceded in death by her son Bob Seger and husband Joe Novotny. She is survived by her daughter Penny Mulligan, 8 grandchildren, a bunch of great-grandkids, and several great-great-grandkids.

She and Joe loved to camp and travel and she could paint a mean mountain scene. She was loved by all and will be missed by all. Special thanks go to the Daystar care givers who took such good care of her for 5+ years.

Funeral service will be December 9th, 11:00 am, at the Yarington Funeral Home.

Last night my 1987 Toyota 4Runner was stolen from the front of my house near the intersection of Woodside and Myrtle. It is black with a black fabric top on the rear. WA plates BBC2458. A police report has been filed.

If you see it, call 911.

UPDATE: Peter reports it was found, abandoned in White Center.

1:53 PM: Ready for basketball? Chief Sealth International High School is hosting an eight-team jamboree through about 5 pm. We were there for the opening game this past hour, Sealth vs. Vashon Island HS. The Seahawks led most of the way, but Vashon tied it up in the late going and won 17-15 on a shot at the buzzer. Here’s the schedule (PDF) for the afternoon; Sealth plays again at 4:30 pm in the closing game, vs. Sultan HS.

In the chilly almost-winter sunshine, here’s a reason to dream about spring: Registration time for Southwest Lacrosse Club (WSB sponsor)! Teams play a March-to-June season, with preseason practices starting in February – twice weekly, with games on Saturday, except for high-school-age players, whose practices and games are on weekdays. The girls’ program has 3rd/4th-grade and 5th/6th-grade teams; the boys’ program has 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, 7th/8th grade, and high school. Also, there’s a co-ed, non-contact, K-2 program on Sundays in April and May. You can register online at swlacrosseclub.org. The registration link for all ages is here; scholarships are available.

It’s back to business as usual at Duke’s on Alki today (2516 Alki SW) after repairs to a pipe that broke in subfreezing weather Friday morning. (That’s the situation that was logged as “major water job” on the SFD log, though their crews weren’t there for long.) Duke’s management contacted us this morning to get the word out that they have fixed the problem and are back open regular hours today, 11 am-11 pm.

The SPD log shows another burglary reported in Gatewood today – and this time we’ve heard from the victim. Mark reports:

While work(ing) on my security cameras this afternoon (!!!) , I stepped inside and left my garage doors open for several minutes. A guy drove by, stopped, and came into the garage. Fortunately he only stole a bike pump. Attached are pictures of the guy and his truck.

I literally was out of the garage for 90 seconds at the time of the theft.

This was in an alley behind the 6700 block of 38th SW. If you have any information about the person in Mark’s images, the SPD case # is 2019-443068.

7:28 PM: We’re at Lowman Beach Park, first stop of the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship‘s 2019 season. After about 20 minutes of live holiday music for those on board and on shore, the ship – and the boats sailing with it – will head to Alki Beach, with that stop scheduled for 8:10 pm. After tonight, you have two more chances to see and hear this holiday tradition – 8:40 pm tomorrow (Saturday, November 30th), by Salty’s on Alki (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor), and then an afternoon stop on Saturday, December 7th, at Don Armeni Boat Ramp (1220 Harbor SW), 3:05 pm (following a 2 pm visit to Duwamish Waterway Park in South Park). Video later!

8:41 PM: One boat accompanied the Christmas Ship off Lowman Beach – now that we’re home and getting a closer look at the photos, we can identify it as the Baltic Sea, which belongs to Husky Deli proprietor Jack Miller. Onshore – the traditional bonfire:

Again this year, The Christmas People are planning to make the holiday merrier, with your help – especially if you can bake and donate cookies. We just received the announcement:

The Christmas People will gather again at Alki Masonic Center, 4736 40th Ave SW, on Monday, Dec. 23, Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, December 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen during those hours; also needed, 3,000 homemade cookies, which may be dropped off.

Each day we will prepare 350 meals in full-size aluminum trays for women’s shelters in downtown Seattle. On Christmas Day we will host homeless, veterans, seniors, and those who need a meal. From noon to 4 p.m. there will be a full complimentary holiday buffet in Alki Masonic Center Dining Room. This is our 21st year. NEXT WEEK: Avalon/35th project moves onto SW Alaska

Crews on the Avalon/35th repaving-and-more project have been off the past two days but are scheduled to resume work with a new phase: Moving onto the SW Alaska block that’s also part of the plan, between 35th and 36th. The latest SDOT update:

We are continuing to install traffic and parking signs on SW Avalon Way. Please take note of the 2-hour parking signs being installed on SW Bradford St, and south of SW Bradford St.

Zone F (SW Alaska St from 35th Ave SW to 36th Ave SW):
As soon as the week of December 2, we will be closing the south side of 36th Ave SW at SW Alaska St for a few weeks to install new water utilities. Please expect loud noise, dust, and vibrations while we complete this work.

As we begin work on SW Alaska St, please follow King County Metro’s Rider Alerts to stay up to date on bus stop changes.

Work near 35th Ave SW and SW Avalon Way Intersection:

We are continuing work at the northeast corner of 35th Ave SW and SW Avalon Way to install water utilities, pour new road panels, and rebuild sidewalks and curb ramps. This intersection will continue to change as work continues. Please drive slowly as our traffic control will shift frequently.

Please expect:

*Traffic delays at the 35th Ave SW and SW Avalon Way intersection due to temporary lane reductions
*One lane of travel in each direction on SW Avalon Way
*Right turns in and out of driveways at this time

UPDATE: Deadly crash on NB 99 north of downtown

1:55 PM: If you have to head north of downtown any time in the next few hours, you’ll want to avoid Highway 99. It’s closed north of the Aurora Bridge because of a deadly crash involving a flipped car. Initial emergency-radio reports – and a text from a WSB reader who was there right after it happened – were that one person was dead at the scene, at least one other with life-threatening injuries.

4:09 PM: NB traffic is still being diverted, at last report onto Bridge Way. The Seattle Times reports the incident involved a woman driving onto a sidewalk and hitting 4 pedestrians, one of whom was killed.

6:15 PM: NB Aurora remains closed. SPD has published this update on the case, saying the driver will be booked into jail for investigation of vehicular homicide.

6:27 PM: SDOT has just announced the scene is clear.

12:54 PM: Today is Native American Heritage Day, and the Duwamish Tribe Longhouse and Cultural Center in West Seattle (4705 West Marginal Way SW) is the perfect place to honor that. While you can visit year-round, today (and five more days this holiday season) brings an extra reason – the Holiday Native Gift Fair and Art Market. Participating artists and other vendors are lining both main public areas.

Art, apparel, jewelry, drums, carvings, teas, and body-care items are among the merchandise. The fair is on until 5 pm today, 10 am-5 pm again tomorrow and Sunday, and then a second 3-day run December 13-14-15. There’s overflow parking in the former bus lot across West Marginal, and a crossing guard.

If you missed the waxing crescent moon and its planetary companions just after sunset – here’s the view courtesy of David Hutchinson, who explains, “View from Constellation Park. Venus is closest to the Moon, with Jupiter further to the right and slightly down.” Tomorrow should bring a clear view, too; Friday’s moonset will be 7:15 pm, an hour later than tonight.

That’s the West Seattle High School Marching Band in last year’s Macy’s Holiday Parade downtown. According to the lineup for this year’s parade – which starts at 9 am tomorrow (Friday, November 29th) – both the WSHS and Chief Sealth International High School bands are scheduled to be part of it. The CSIHS and WSHS band, and Sealth’s cheer team, are among more than two dozen bands and performance teams that’ll be in the parade, which starts at 7th and Pine, heads west on Pine to 5th, then south on 5th to University, west on University to 4th, then back north on 4th to end at Macy’s (see the map here). Weather should be just like today – clear and chilly.

Driver hits pedestrian at Delridge/Orchard

For the second consecutive night, a pedestrian has been taken to the hospital after being hit by a driver in West Seattle. This time it happened on the northeast side of the Delridge/Orchard intersection, by the Shell station. We’re told at the scene that the pedestrian, described as a young woman, does not have major injuries, but she’s being taken to Harborview to be checked out. Police are talking with the driver.

HOLIDAYS: Vietnamese Cultural Center’s Thanksgiving gifts

Another local giving tradition this Thanksgiving – the photos are from Ducly Bui at the West Seattle-headquartered Vietnamese Cultural Center, which organized volunteers to visit two tiny-house encampments today, providing haircuts and a hot meal.

Their stops included Camp Second Chance in southeast West Seattle. The center (which is at 2236 SW Orchard) has a tradition of this kind of holiday giving going back almost a decade.
