If this thread doesn’t go over 100 then something is very wrong because (a) Seattle is the Snob of the Universe when it comes to music and (b) Seattle just wanted to make sure the world knew that, mmmm-kay?

So how snobby? Well, on the dating sites (not that I go there) that is the first thing that most people look at after the picture: the music list.

In this town, you are likely to hear phrases such as, “I simply had to break up with Brad. He lied to me when he said he loved the Pixies.”

No, West is not “Real Seattle” in music terms, but still, the vibe coming out from the core is so strong it is bound to shake the suburbs, too. Just look at Easy Street. (And Meanders is gonna eventually hit it big in spite of the recent unpleasantness. All ya gotta do is hang a sign out.)

Even in the Constellation Byoo-rine there are World Class Latin bands! Of course the hipsters are not going to be seen in those parts but (next best thing) . . . real live Latinos do go there. For better or worse, they are here. And they brought the good times with them. So thx for that.

So what makes Seattle snobby? Even the scientists don’t know. Seattle doesn’t know more about music than, say, Chicago or Memphis. Nor is it some mystical music fairyland, like Austin.

You can’t blame it all on Grunge, because Grunge is already Grandpa’s music. And besides, that’s an insult to Jimi Hendrix (see below) and everyone else who came before Grunge. And there were many.

But we can still try to figure out “Why Seattle?”

What I come up with is this:

1) Lots of venues, radio stations & SubPop

2) Good fan networks

3) Appreciative audiences

4) Good reputation of the City

Note that EMP did not make the list, nor will it, ever. A single hipster bar in Ballard is more important to the music scene than that abortion of a building. Sorry, Mr. Billionaire: Unlike software tycoons, bands can lose money in Seattle and still say they “made it” here.

There are exceptions to Seattle’s reputation for knowing a good thing.

For a city of its size, Seattle is tepid when it comes to jazz and classical. And downright hostile to Black music – and when I say Black music I don’t mean the music that Black groups play, I mean the music that Black people listen to – which is no surprise, given all the whiteness around here.

. . . unless you’re talking rave and DJ stuff, which plays to mixed crowds I guess, but is also pretty much the same from one city to the next.

And which I don’t like anyway, because I’m older now, and I don’t take illegal mind-altering drugs. Much.

I had the opportunity to try a car out today with my 30 free minutes, and I would honestly be hard-pressed to drive one again. There was simply no power in the car, and there was a severe delay from when I hit the gas to when the car actually moved. Conversely, you had to slam on the brake pedal to get it to stop. I felt very unsafe in my short one mile drive. I was grateful it was on local streets and not the highway. (And yes, I did contact Car2Go via email to give them feedback and ask if this was normal, or if there’s a problem with this particular car, but have not heard back yet.) Also, being a large person with long legs, it was extremely difficult for me to get my legs under the steering wheel to get in/out of the car.

The keypad inside was helpful to let you know where the key was, where the ignition was (not immediately noticeable) and reminders about how to end the trip.

I’ve been watching the car locations for a while (before being in WS) and the thing that makes Car2Go appealing – one way rentals – is also its downfall. Without the ability to reserve the car more than 30 min. in advance, you can’t truly rely on a car being somewhere. So to make plans around using it is difficult. For instance, I dropped the car off right near my house, and within 20 min. someone else drove off with it. and I had originally hoped to grab one downtown to drive home, but not one was available anywhere in the downtown core – I would’ve had to take a bus to Belltown or near the stadiums (around 4:30).

I share a car with my husband (he bikes often – I cannot due to disability), and we both commute by bus too. We had hoped Car2Go would give us more freedom when both of us needed a car. But given the lack of power in the car and the inability to predict in advance where to get one, it would be hard to rely on it. Oh, and one other thing – I know the car has 3 cylinders so I don’t expect it to be a racecar, but I’ve driven a 3 cylinder car before, and this was significantly more sluggish.

Talaki I agree with what you say about homeless people needing to get together with someone so their needs can be sorted out and a recovery/housing plan can be worked out.

In fact, many people at Nickelsville have worked hard, taken advantage of City services and have gotten out of there. Some months ago I interviewed a couple who did just that and posted it here on the Blog. From the interview, it’s clear what a long and difficult process recovery can be . . .

If the City was running Nickelsville, or had an official presence there, they could do a much better job of facilitating people getting the services they need. However, since the City has no presence there, and since lately the City seems to be feuding with the camp “authorities” more than talking with them, it appears that Nickelsville is really not the best place for homeless people to get connected with the help they need.

In fact, I worry that there are some people there who WANT help but are actually PREVENTED from getting it by people in charge of the camp. Some months ago, one of the super-helpers related to me details of how the camp authorities actually intimidate campers into NOT seeking outside help. At first I thought that was just camp gossip, but now I believe her . . .

So, in that sense Nickelsville, as it is currently being managed, is not helping people. It is actually holding them back.

And also FWIW … I was just explaining this to somebody in an e-mail conversation (not a Forums member that I know of) …. the original “firebombing” incident did not make news that I can find. It was on the 911 log that night as a “car fire” at the Nickelsville address, but that wouldn’t catch our attention necessarily or any other media organization – we don’t routinely go to car fires unless there’s word of a big traffic jam or injuries. Medic units were not dispatched, so apparently none of the latter. And the arson unit does not work out of the SW Precinct, so any later report calling it arson would not have even been caught by our blotter writer (WS Beat’s Megan Sheppard) or anybody else’s – that report would not have been in the stack at the precinct. So I was surprised to see today’s news release, myself. I *do* somewhat recall the Beacon Hill gunfire a couple days later, for which the guy also was sentenced.

While NOBODY and I mean NOBODY has facts about post flags but the two of us who own, and run, and are ultimately accountable (ethically, legally, and many other “-ly’s”) for this site (P and I are the only people with forum editorial access): I will tell you that JoB’s speculation is correct.

… with the additional fact that flags are very rare. Fewer than one a day. Often not even one a week, except for our outbreak of prolific spam a month or two ago. Spam is by far the most common flag-trigger.

And the vast majority of people who flag posts ARE people who are readers but generally not commenters. I don’t know their genders and don’t care. I thank them for caring enough to take the time to help keep this a relatively safe place to share information neighbor-to-neighbor.

Not to pile on but actually, as we’ve reported previously, there are more than 2,000 units in the pipeline – and we’ve reported a couple more developments since the last time I updated the map.

West Seattle development, mapped: 2,000+ planned units

Dialogue is vital. And difficult because the question remains, who are you talking to, since there is no specific elected position, let alone body of positions, representing just this area.

In addition to airing ideas and thoughts, might I also suggest that anyone who is concerned should first start with involvement with their neighborhood council – find out how (if) it is advocating on/discussing these issues, and if it’s not, get involved and make that happen. In The Junction, for example, there is no currently active neighborhood council, unlike the other two junctions (Admiral and Morgan).
