Seriously . . . Songs that speak to me?

    How much time ya got?

I find it interesting that a couple of folks here said “Jessica.”

The early Allman Bros were one of the few bands whose music could actually sound better live than when it was all polished up in the studio. It’s like one long jam session.

There are even fewer bands that can do that today. Now they don’t just need tons of multi-track digital crap, they need video and light shows backing ’em up, or they lose the audience’s attention . . . ‘cuz musically, they SUCK!

And I’m not even talking about auto-tuning.

Here’s a rare live-studio version of what I consider to be the Allman Bros’ greatest contribution to music. One of the best blues-rock recordings of all time.

And note, for the “record” that, unlike 99.997% of people doing blues-rock during this era (Zep, Stones, etc.) they actually gave CREDIT to their source . . . in this case a Black man, to whose original song the Allmans’ version owed practically NOTHING.

As my friend Mark always says: “Turn it up!”

DBP…I saw the Allman’s twice way back when. Once at Madison Square Garden in ’73, and once in a field somewhere in New Jersey in spring of ’74 – that one was crazy. Definitely great live !

    smokey, I dared.

    Is this your band?

Do you, perchance, know someone in this band?

It sounds like a young Mick Jagger fronting the Stray Cats.

I got cognitive whiplash about half-way thru, because it was Mick Jagger singing about Jesus, without a hint of irony.

Or am I being too hard on you?

If so, call me good for 1 beer at the nearest Christian drinking establishment. pammerhead will be there, too. ;-)

Anonyme! I know I’m SO late to this one but have you heard Sam Cooke’s version of Tennessee Waltz? It’s my absolute favorite.

Also, for me, ANYTHING Sam Cooke. I’m trying to make a playlist for my wedding and I am eventually going to need to lay off his catalog. But I don’t wanna!

So how far afield do you wanna get from Sam Cooke?

Do you know how Pandora works? Just start a Pandora station with Sam Cooke. Two hours, three hours tops, ya gotcher list and then some.

How about Otis Redding? Bill Withers? Low Rawls (“Your Good Thing” Good edgy number for a wedding.)

James Hunter (“People Gonna Talk” More yuks for the wedding guests.)

Nat King Cole might be a little fringe for that set. But you’ll have way more fun if you treat it like “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” instead of having a single obvious theme.

    Trust me.

Oh yeah. And another thing . . . you’re the only who’s gonna remember the whole set 5 years from now, so if you hit a flat note or two, who cares?

Good thought there, DBP. I’ve been on Pandora and have written down some that I like, I probably need to log some more time on there. And Nat King Cole isn’t far afield at all… perfect “cocktail hour” stuff.

thanks, good to hear I could make a couple people’s day.

Not my band. I have no musical talent to speak of. They are just a great band i was listening to and thought it might be a neat addition to the discussion. They have a couple songs on that album with a gospel slant, but by no means are they a Christian band.

Have not listened to all those tunes yet but promise to do so AND . . .

If this thread doesn’t go over 100 then something is very wrong because (a) Seattle is the Snob of the Universe when it comes to music and (b) Seattle just wanted to make sure the world knew that, mmmm-kay?

So how snobby? Well, on the dating sites (not that I go there) that is the first thing that most people look at after the picture: the music list.

In this town, you are likely to hear phrases such as, “I simply had to break up with Brad. He lied to me when he said he loved the Pixies.”

    * * * * * * * * * *

No, West is not “Real Seattle” in music terms, but still, the vibe coming out from the core is so strong it is bound to shake the suburbs, too. Just look at Easy Street. (And Meanders is gonna eventually hit it big in spite of the recent unpleasantness. All ya gotta do is hang a sign out.)

Even in the Constellation Byoo-rine there are World Class Latin bands! Of course the hipsters are not going to be seen in those parts but (next best thing) . . . real live Latinos do go there. For better or worse, they are here. And they brought the good times with them. So thx for that.

    * * * * * * * * * *

So what makes Seattle snobby? Even the scientists don’t know. Seattle doesn’t know more about music than, say, Chicago or Memphis. Nor is it some mystical music fairyland, like Austin.

You can’t blame it all on Grunge, because Grunge is already Grandpa’s music. And besides, that’s an insult to Jimi Hendrix (see below) and everyone else who came before Grunge. And there were many.

But we can still try to figure out “Why Seattle?”

What I come up with is this:

    1) Lots of venues, radio stations & SubPop

    2) Good fan networks

    3) Appreciative audiences

    4) Good reputation of the City

Note that EMP did not make the list, nor will it, ever. A single hipster bar in Ballard is more important to the music scene than that abortion of a building. Sorry, Mr. Billionaire: Unlike software tycoons, bands can lose money in Seattle and still say they “made it” here.

    * * * * * * * * * * *

There are exceptions to Seattle’s reputation for knowing a good thing.

For a city of its size, Seattle is tepid when it comes to jazz and classical. And downright hostile to Black music – and when I say Black music I don’t mean the music that Black groups play, I mean the music that Black people listen to – which is no surprise, given all the whiteness around here.

. . . unless you’re talking rave and DJ stuff, which plays to mixed crowds I guess, but is also pretty much the same from one city to the next.

And which I don’t like anyway, because I’m older now, and I don’t take illegal mind-altering drugs. Much.

This for anyone who maybe does not pick up on the connection between Blues and Rock:

hipster…why have I always had a problem with that term? Especially, those who call themselves hipsters? Like, I’m cool and in, and you’re not, kind of “hipster”. They dress a certain way, look a certain style, wear the appropriate glasses and heaven forbid they listen to mom’s music – lol…..although I have always thought, as an older woman, I still have good taste in music…even if I do like classical…:)

yes, a dearth of jazz here…and blues…it’s a shame. In some ways we are still the small town striving to be the big city…both a good and a bad thing.

And good radio with good music is pretty absent here in Seattle, except if you like a steady stream of oldies but goodies….internet radio is much better, and love Pandora, Spotify, last.com, etc…

B-squared…I know the feeling. Someone posts a song or two, and I’m like “Oh, yeah!” And then I remember something else.

We all have such varied tastes, and seeing and hearing music we hadn’t considered before just expands our horizons. A good thing!

    Where is Jiggers?

(Jiggers? Calling Jiggers on Register 7.)

Jiggers you better get over here, dude. Because if not, you will henceforth not be uttering the name of a certain 70s supergroup in MY presence again.

DBP…You made very good points in post #40. I’m very passionate about music and the music industry being an ex-keyboardist and disc jockey myself. I will return to post my two-cents when I organize my thoughts down.
