LISTEN WHILE YOU NOSH: Musical guest announced for Taste of West Seattle 2025

The West Seattle Food Bank‘s most flavorful fundraiser is getting closer – the Taste of West Seattle, on September 25. WSFB has announced the musical guest for the food-and-beverage fest at The Hall at Fauntleroy:

The West Seattle Food Bank is thrilled to announce that iconic singer-songwriter Jim Page will be the special musical guest at this year’s Taste of West Seattle, taking place on Thursday, September 25th at The Hall at Fauntleroy.

Widely regarded as a cornerstone of Seattle’s folk scene, Jim Page has spent decades using music to spark thought, raise consciousness, and give voice to the community. His presence at the Taste of West Seattle adds a uniquely local and meaningful layer to an already vibrant event.

“Jim is legendary in Seattle music” said Robbin Peterson, Development Director at West Seattle Food Bank. “His music is part of the foundation of this city’s musical soul, and we’re honored to have him join us in support of our mission. He isn’t just performing – he’s representing decades of community, protest, and sound that have shaped this city.”

Jim Page has recorded 24 albums and written a mountain of songs. Seattle Metropolitan Magazine calls him: “One of the 50 most influential musicians in Seattle history.” In 1974 he legalized busking (street performing) in Seattle, where it had been outlawed for decades. He has toured in 13 countries including the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, most of northern Europe, and Taiwan. His songs have been covered by The Doobie Brothers, Christy Moore, Dick Gaughan, Michael Hedges, and Roy Bailey. Bonnie Raitt says, “In the tradition of Woody and Dylan, he cuts right to the heart with music you actually enjoy listening to. I’m a longtime admirer.”

The Taste of West Seattle brings together dozens of local restaurants, breweries, wineries, and bakeries for a night of incredible food, community, and purpose – all in support of vital food and housing services for our neighbors in need.

SEATTLE MAYOR: Katie Wilson‘s one-point initial lead over Bruce Harrell* has grown to five points, 48% to 43%.

SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL CITYWIDE POSITION 9 Dionne Foster‘s 15-point initial lead over Sara Nelson* has grown to 18 points, 56% to 38%

SEATTLE CITY ATTORNEY: Erika Evans‘s initial 14-point lead over Ann Davison* has grown to 17 points, 53% to 36%

See the full results list here.

TRANSIT: Most Water Taxi, Metro bus fares rising; West Seattle service not changing

(File photo)

Metro has announced both its next “service change” plan for buses and a round of fare changes for bus and Water Taxi service – almost all increases. Here’s how West Seattle service will be affected:

AUGUST 30 SERVICE CHANGE: Metro’s twice-yearly list of changes to various routes is out, and this time, no West Seattle routes are on the list – no service additions or subtractions in this area.

BUS AND WATER-TAXI FARE CHANGES, MOSTLY INCREASES: Two days later, on Monday, September 1, fare changes kick in for Metro bus and Water Taxi service. You can see the full table here. Key changes:

Full fares
*Metro bus/Flex adult fares rise 25 cents to $3
*West Seattle Water Taxi adult fares rise 50 cents to $6.25

ORCA fares
*West Seattle Water Taxi, up 25 cents to $5.25
*West Seattle Water Taxi ORCA LIFT, down $2.75 to $1

Metro notes that the 25-cent increase in full adult bus fares will be the first one since it established flat fares in 2018.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, October 10 is the end of this year’s “summer schedule” for the West Seattle Water Taxi, which means regular Friday and Saturday later-night service will end then, until spring.

CANCELED: No outdoor concert at The Mount this Friday

What would have been the second of four outdoor concerts at Providence Mount St. Vincent (WSB sponsor) this Friday night is canceled. Here’s the announcement:

Due to recent COVID-19 cases and recommended health precautions, the Summer Concert originally scheduled for August 8 at Providence Mount St. Vincent has been canceled. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution to prioritize the safety and well-being of our residents and community.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back on August 15 for an evening of folk, bluegrass, and country music from the 1950s to 1980s, featuring Salt Luck.

The performer who had been scheduled this Friday was Frank Sinatra tribute singer Joey Jewell. We asked a Mount spokesperson if anyone in attendance last Friday, when Elvis Presley tribute singer Danny Vernon performed, had reason for concern; they said no: “We don’t believe our outdoor venue offered any increased risk of exposure as any other public event or activity in the community.”

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Police obtain Extreme Risk Protection Order for apartment-shooting suspect

Another new development today in the case of Aren Oleson, arrested last week after so much gunfire in his West Seattle apartment that officers reported gunsmoke in the air, and neighbors hid in fear. This is what police say they found in the apartment when searching with a warrant after the arrest:

(Seattle Police photo)

As we reported Tuesday, Oleson, 36, is charged with 10 misdemeanors after the investigating detective referred the case to the City Attorney’s Office for that level of potential charging rather than the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for potential felony charges. But, as also reported, investigators were reviewing any other actions that could be taken – and this morning we have word of one such action: An Extreme Risk Protection Order. Seattle Police filed for a temporary ERPO, which can be put into place without notice and be in effect for up to two weeks, until a hearing can be held; a senior county prosecutor also assisted with the filing. From the SPD webpage about ERPOs, here’s the explanation:

Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) prevent individuals at high risk of harming themselves or others from accessing firearms by allowing family, household members, and police to obtain a court order when there is demonstrated evidence that the person poses a significant danger.

Family or household members and Law Enforcement Officers may obtain an ERPO when there is evidence that the person poses a significant danger, including danger because of a dangerous mental health crisis or violent behavior. The purpose and intent is to reduce gun deaths and injuries through an order temporarily restricting a person’s access to firearms.

Here’s the main argument made in this case (via a screenshot from the documents):

The ERPO is in effect against Oleson until an online hearing August 19, and is separate from the criminal case (for which he has another hearing today – we’ll add any new information from that here later).

Side note: The documents for the temporary ERPO filing provide information we hadn’t found previously, Oleson’s criminal history: Convictions in Kitsap County for second-degree theft and first-degree stolen-property trafficking. The document says his right to possess guns was restored in 2020; as we reported Tuesday, that’s why he couldn’t be charged with unlawful firearm possession. Under terms of the ERPO, he is required to surrender the guns found in his apartment, at least temporarily; the documents say they are still in SPD evidence storage. Oleson remains in jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

5:41 PM UPDATE: For a second consecutive day, Oleson’s hearing was postponed because he was “medically unavailable,” no elaboration in court documents. His hearing’s been rescheduled for tomorrow.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Night Out 2025 in West Seattle – with bands and bees

5:47 PM: Whether on a waste bin, A-board, repurposed construction sign, whatever’s handy, that’s the sign of the night. Be mindful of more than 200 authorized street closures for Night Out 2025 neighborhood parties, through about 9 tonight. We’re out visiting a few but would also love to add your photos – westseattleblog@gmail.com or text to 206-293-6302. First one in – Alyson on Angeline Street says they’re aiming for a waste-free block party:

6:20 PM: Just visited Rosalie‘s neighborhood east of West Seattle High School.

They’re playing games as well as putting together a potluck. And this might be tonight’s only block party with bees!

One neighbor is a beekeeper, and others, Rosalie included, have gardens the bees adore. Here’s the neighborhood group photo:

7 PM: It’s a Night Out tradition to visit JoDean‘s neighborhood in Arbor Heights:

Quiet neighborhood, so not much has changed since last Night Out:

They’re just enjoying a potluck and hanging out in the street.

7:06 PM: From WSB contributor Jason Grotelueschen, who’s also made some stops – pic of the night, a “foam party” for kids at the White Center gathering at Steve Cox Memorial Park:

7:39 PM: Via text, here are Seaview neighbors from the 5600 block of 47th SW:

8:52 PM: Thanks to the readers who tipped us that part of the legendary Seattle All-City Band would be performing at a few local parties tonight. Jason caught up with them at one stop – his video starts with some explanation of what they were up to, so if you just want to forward to the music, go to 3:40 in:

We’re told the performances were part of a fundraiser, and five West Seattle stops were among 20 around the city made by four groups from ACB. In West Seattle, they got around via school bus:

Founder Dr. Marcus Pimpleton was there to direct them (as also seen in our video clip):

Our photos were from 51st/Hanford. Thanks to Lindsey Pearsall for this view from their stop at her Upper Alki block party, which also had SFD in attendance:

Another band we encountered on Night Out: Los Flacos, performing in Delridge at the SW Willow block party:

The event was also a debut for Sustainable Music Northwest, whose community-building mission seemed to synergize nicely with the intent of Night Out. Here’s our group photo of the neighbors who gathered there:

On to other parties: Thanks to Allison in Arbor Heights (on 36th SW) for the neighborhood portrait:

And Jenn sent photos from 13th SW between Cloverdale and Thistle, with an SFD visit:

Firefighters from Station 37 visited Darren‘s party (thanks for the pics!) in Arbor Heights, SW 105th between 35th and 39th:

This party also did some serious grilling:

Thanks to everyone who shared photos, and to those who invited us to stop by their parties!

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Why apartment-shooting suspect probably won’t face felony charges

(Reader photo, last Thursday night)

Five days after 36-year-old Aren Oleson was arrested after allegedly firing a gun repeatedly in his South Admiral apartment, investigators say he’s facing misdemeanor charges rather than felony charges.

He was originally suspected of unlawful firearm possession, a felony, but prosecutors say SPD determined that Oleson had had his firearms rights restored (he had been described by SPD as a convicted felon but we still don’t have details of his record), so the six guns found in his apartment apparently were not illegally owned after all. And since no one was injured by the gunfire, police and county prosecutors determined the case was not a matter of felony assault. However, the City Attorney’s Office, according to the jail docket and court file, has charged Oleson with 10 misdemeanors, including obstructing a public officer, possession of a controlled substance, property damage, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and aiming or discharging a firearm. A spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says that felony charges could still be considered if additional evidence is found that leads the SPD investigating detective to refer the case. Meantime, the two officers are still talking about the case and, according to the KCPAO spokesperson, “working on what steps they could take for public safety with all available options under the law.” Oleson remains in jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

UPDATE: Xfinity/Comcast outage in north West Seattle

1:46 PM: When multiple readers mention a cable/internet outage, it’s usually fairly big, so we’re making note of this one: Readers in north West Seattle say their Xfinity/Comcast service is out, and that the map (which we can’t see because our area’s not affected) says more than 500 customers are affected, with restoration expected by mid-afternoon.

3:17 PM: The reader who was first to tell us about the outage says it’s resolved. Let us know if you’re still out.

3:55 PM: We have an email report of the outage persisting in at least part of Alki.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Another bicycle stolen from porch

For the second time this week, we have a reader report about a bicycle stolen from a West Seattle porch:

Stolen Gravel Bike – August 4 @ 10 p.m.

A REI Co-op ADV 2.2 bike was stolen from a home at the intersection of 16th Avenue SW and SW Myrtle Street last night around 10:00 p.m. The bike was locked on the front porch of the home, and two people broke the lock with bolt cutters. The owner of the home heard it in time to confront one of the thieves, but the other had already gotten away with the bike. The two people were both male, medium build (no taller than 5’8″), slim, and had dark hair and brown skin. The man who was confronted was wearing a red hoodie, held a black bike helmet, a shoulder bag, and a notebook. He spoke only in Spanish. The owner didn’t get a good enough look of the the man who got away with the bike to give more details about his clothing.

The ADV 2.2 bike is a white/gray gravel bike. It has two fenders, a rear rack, and two water bottle cages.

The incident was filed with the Seattle Police Department – case number 25-222264.

If you have any information, please contact the owner at 804-690-2835.

Celebration of Life planned Sunday for Clive McCoy, 61

Family and friends will gather Sunday (August 10) to celebrate the life of Clive McCoy, and are sharing this remembrance with his community:

Clive McCoy passed away July 16, 2025. He was 61 years old. Clive lived a full life and was a gift to all who met him. Clive had Down Syndrome. He started school at age 3 at the Northwest Center. He attended Grandview School and graduated from Tyee High School in 1984.

Clive then went to work at the Seattle Bagel Bakery for many years in the kitchen. He took his job responsibilities seriously and was proud of the work he did. When Clive was no longer able to work, he participated in local day programs. Clive lived with two roommates and care givers helping with activities of daily living. It was a model for semi-independent living.

Clive will be missed. He was our little brother, an integral member of our family. Clive loved his family and his church. A Celebration of Life will be held at Tibbetts United Methodist Church, 3940 41st Ave SW, on Sunday, August 10 at 2 pm. Memorials can be made in memory of Clive to Tibbetts United Methodist Church.

CONGRATULATIONS! Easy Street Wreckers win city softball championship

The Easy Street Wreckers won the ISL Softball Co-Ed City Championship . This marks the 4th time in 6 years! They are also celebrating 20 years as a team! Trailing by 5 going into the last inning, Easy Street rattled off 12 unanswered runs to take the trophy. The ASA Industrial Softball League includes 16 small businesses throughout Seattle. Big props to The Lariat, great bar/ lounge in White Center. Seattle’s first and only pro-wrestling-themed bar! Congrats to Georgetown’s 9 LB Hammer – they won the 2nd Division trophy.

MVP went to South Seattle College Political Science Professor and avid record collector, Larry Cushnie.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Luring attempt; bicycle theft; hit-run mystery

Three incidents in this Crime Watch roundup – ne from the police files, two from reader reports:

LURING ATTEMPT: This was called in to 911 just before midnight last Friday night; after seeing a short summary, we requested the narrative (note that RP stands for “reporting party,” who in this case was a juvenile):

Officers responded to 4001 California AV SW (76 service station) in reference to a suspicious subject complaint.

Upon arrival, officers contacted the RP, who was hiding in a nearby alley behind the service station. According to the RP, she was waiting at the bus stop, which was located in front of the store on California AV SW, when a red in color cargo van drove up and the driver of the van reportedly asked the RP if she wanted a ride home.

When the RP declined, the van left the scene but returned a short time later. The RP advised that the driver approached her again and then demanded that the RP get inside of the vehicle.

The RP stated that she became afraid and ran behind the store and down the alley where officers located her hiding behind several garbage cans in the area. The suspect had left the area in an unknown direction before officers arrived on scene.

The narrative provided to us included no description of the person in the van, nor any further details about the van, though the original summary said it was a “minivan” with a “sliding door.” If you have any info, contact police and refer to incident # 25-219081.

BICYCLE THIEF: Joni is looking for her stolen bicycle, taken on Genesee Hill, and sent these two images – one of the thief:

And this one of her bicycle:

This happened at 3:42 am on July 28th. We’ll add the police report # when we get it.

HIT-RUN: A reader who wishes to be anonymous is asking for help with this:

A West Seattle Sunday Funday unfortunately took a turn when two friends I’d been with were sideswiped while parked on southbound Harbor Ave SW — right in front of Verge Condominiums — between 3:30 and 5:30 PM on Sunday, August 3rd.

We’re hoping someone in the community might’ve seen something. Our assumption (based on some left-behind car parts) is that the vehicle may have been a white Honda Civic or Accord, but we’re open to any leads or eyewitness accounts.

The report number is M4800628.

ELECTION 2025: Less than 24 hours left to vote for city and county top jobs, money measures, more…

(WSB photo: One of West Seattle’s four ballot dropboxes, at South Seattle College)

One more reminder before Election Day arrives – you now have less than 24 hours to vote! King County Elections dropboxes close at exactly 8 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, August 5), and if you’re going to chance that USPS will postmark your not-yet-sent ballot in time, the sooner you get it to a Post Office, the better! (Forgive us for not having at least a mayoral-candidates forum this primary season … it’s still a bit of a transition time for us, but we plan to beef it up for the general election.) You have to decide now, though, who you want to see on the ballot for that election – and you have to settle the fate of two levy measures. Here one more time is what voters in our area are considering:

nCANDIDATES (all are listed/infolinked here)
Seattle Mayor (8 candidates)
Seattle citywide Council Position 8 (5 candidates)
Seattle citywide Council Position 9 (4 candidates)
Seattle City Attorney (4 candidates)
King County Executive (7 candidates, no incumbent)

Top two candidates in those races will face off in the November general election. Meantime, the two below, as is always the case with ballot measures, will be final decisions:

BALLOT MEASURES
King County Proposition 1 (6-year County Parks Levy renewal)
Seattle Proposition 1 (City Democracy Voucher 10-year levy renewal)

Still only 18 percent of ballots have been received so far. … Tomorrow night’s first and only round of results should be released around 8:15 pm, and as usual, we’ll have the highlights.

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Charges filed against two murder suspects arrested in West Seattle

Last week, we reported on two people arrested in West Seattle who were suspects in unrelated murders outside West Seattle. Both are now charged. Here are the updates:

WEST SEATTLE RESIDENT CHARGED IN NORTHGATE MURDER: The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Edward G. Kimani with first-degree murder in the deadly shooting at the Northgate Transit Station one week ago today. He’s the 26-year-old man arrested at his residence on 28th SW in Sunrise Heights last Wednesday night in a warrant-service operation that caught the attention of thousands because the Guardian One helicopter circled overhead until Kimani was in custody. While investigators say Kimani and 48-year-old victim Juwan Williams were schoolmates at Pima Medical Institute in Northgate, they still say they don’t know the motive. But they allege it was premeditated, that Kimani knew when Williams would be at the transit station and waited for him. The charging documents also say that Kimani had no criminal history, and that investigators haven’t found the gun used in the murder, but after the warrant was served that night, “Also in that bedroom was a receipt for a Glock 42 380 ACP – the same caliber as that recovered from the scene, along with a box of .380 ammunition. Investigators compared the brand of those bullets to that of the fired shell casing recovered at the scene and both were Ammo Inc .380 Auto bullets.” They also say Kimani had at least two other guns: “Records also showed Kimani had a Taurus .40 handgun registered to him in September of 2024 and a Glock 9mm handgun registered to him in April of 2024.” Kimani remains in jail in lieu of $5 million bail.]

WEST SEATTLE VISITOR CHARGED IN SODO MURDER: Last week we also reported on the arrest of 35-year-old Jordyn B. Weichert, sought in connection with a deadly stabbing in SODO. She is now charged with second-degree murder in the July 14 killing of 55-year-old Ramon Aragon-Garcia in his van. Prosecutors say the two apparently knew each other and were “friendly” before the murder, though there is no information on a motive here either; Aragon-Garcia died of multiple stab wounds all over his body, beneath which the murder weapon was found; there is no information on the documents about who it belonged to. Weichert was arrested in the Luna Park area last Tuesday; she had stayed the previous night with a friend/acquaintance there. Her permanent address is listed as Whidbey Island, where she was convicted of three counts of vehicular homicide in a 2010 crash in which her vehicle went out of control after she asked a passenger to hold the steering wheel while she changed clothes. Whidbey news coverage reports she was sentenced to only eight years. Weichert remains jailed in lieu of $5 million bail, awaiting arraignment on August 14.

UPDATE: Fire at Camp Second Chance, West Seattle’s only tiny-home village

5:57 PM: SFD has a ‘fire in building” response headed to 9701 Myers Way South [map] on the southeast edge of West Seattle, site of Camp Second Chance. One of the tiny homes there is reported to be on fire, with one person reported injured. As of last week, 85 people were reported to be living in the tiny homes at CSC, which is West Seattle’s only city-authorized tiny-home village.

6:01 PM: Firefighters just told dispatch that the fire is mostly out thanks to other residents using fire extinguishers (which each unit is required to have). The injured person is reported to be out of the burned tiny home. … The incident commander is already dismissing a few of the responding units.

6:04 PM: Firefighters report that the fire was only a “contents” fire and did not burn the actual 12’x8′ structure. The injured person, meantime, is described as a man about 40 years old.

Here’s why Fairmount Playground’s south play structure is fenced off

A commenter wondered about that fence blocking access to the south play structure – which is only three years old – at Fairmount Playground. We went over for a look today and noted that not only is the play structure fenced off, so is the entire south-side pathway leading to it from Fauntleroy Way SW. At the street end, notices say it’s a “tree protection” zone, and allude to construction, but no further details, and as the commenter noted, the project to install turf on the nearby ballfield is nowhere near construction-ready. So we inquired with Seattle Parks. Spokesperson Karen O’Connor says it’s for a pathway-paving project that “came up quickly” and was announced along with two non-WS projects for which a contract was awarded to Sunset Grill Construction. Here’s the info about this one:

Fairmount Park in West Seattle: Schedule and Closure: July 31 – September 1

Scope: Installation of new ADA-compliant sidewalks around the playground at Fairmount Park. This includes demolition of existing pathways and construction of new concrete and asphalt pavement in compliance with ADA standards. The contractor will need to close the play area to complete this work and will work to minimize impacts to the remainder of the park.

O’Connor says they’ll get explanatory signage so no one else is left to wonder why.
