ELECTION 2023: Preston Anderson officially announces Seattle City Council District 1 campaign

Just yesterday, we noted that two people have filed Seattle City Council District 1 campaign intentions but neither had made a formal announcement yet. Today, that changed – one of those two people, Preston Anderson, became the first to announce a campaign. In the announcement, Anderson is described as a West Seattle resident who is “a career social worker and former Army Medic who served two combat tours during active duty with over 5 years of service.” His announcement also says, “If elected, he would be the only homeless and behavioral health service provider elected to Council, and the first person of color elected to District 1, a diverse district that includes the neighborhoods of West Seattle, South Park, Georgetown, Sodo, and Pioneer Square. (Councilmember Lisa Herbold, who announced last month that she won’t run for a third term, is the first person ever elected to the seat; the council changed to 7 district-elected members and 2 citywide members starting with the 2015 elections.) The announcement says Anderson “presently works at the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System administering funds for clinically focused transitional housing in collaboration with community based providers (and) continues his direct practice supporting Veterans with acute behavioral health needs.” He says his background would provide “expertise the current council simply doesn’t have” and that his signature issues would be “affordable housing and access to education (and) access to living-wage jobs” as well as “reducing gun violence in Seattle.” You can read his full announcement on his website. Formal filing week is May 15-19, so the field of candidates won’t be finalized until then; the primary election is August 1st.

UPDATE: Motorcycle rider in critical condition after collision on 35th SW

6:50 PM: Thanks for the tip. SPD and SFD are at a crash scene on 35th SW at Dawson, near Camp Long. Buses are also being routed off 35th in that area.

6:57 PM: SPD says the crash involves a driver and motorcycle rider. We’re headed to the scene in hopes of finding out more.

7:21 PM: Our crew says 35th is closed between Dawson and Brandon but that the Traffic Collision Investigation detectives aren’t being called out, so this will clear once the wrecked motorcycle and car are towed. We’re told the rider was taken to a hospital; we’re following up further with SFD to find out their condition when transported.

8:01 PM: The street is open again, per Metro alert saying buses have returned to regular routing.

8:06 PM: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo says the rider, a 24-year-old man, was in critical condition when transported to the hospital.

ELECTION 2023: King County Councilmember Joe McDermott announces he won’t run for reelection

(WSB photo, Councilmember McDermott at White Center event in October)

Another elected official representing West Seattle and vicinity has decided not to run for reelection. This time it’s King County Council District 8 Councilmember Joe McDermott, who lives in West Seattle but represents a district that also includes White Center, Vashon and Maury Islands, and part of Seattle on the east side of the Duwamish River (as with the City Council, the County Council also has recently remapped districts). McDermott served in the State Senate and State House before moving to the County Council 12 years ago, shortly after fellow West Seattleite Dow Constantine became County Executive. He was the first openly gay person to serve on the County Council. He is also a current member of the Sound Transit Board. Councilmember McDermott’s announcement does not specify what he plans to do next:

I look forward to pursuing other professional opportunities yet to be identified once I leave office while always remaining involved in the issues I am passionate about. … I am grateful for the opportunity to work for our communities. I look forward to continuing doing so as a private citizen.

You can read the full announcement, including his list of accomplishments, here. State files show that no far no one else has registered a campaign for District 8, but the official filing week is still four months away.

SURVEY: Help launch the South Delridge Action Plan

The city’s been talking for a long time about neighborhood planning in southeastern West Seattle – and now it’s launching the process with a survey. Here’s the announcement we were asked to share with you:

City of Seattle’s Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) is partnering with community and other City departments to develop a vision for the future of South Delridge, which includes parts of neighborhoods such as Westwood, Roxhill, Highland Park, Delridge, and White Center. This will help the City support community and focus investments in the coming years.

Your input will help identify what issues to address through South Delridge Action Plan, as well as what you think the future of the South Delridge neighborhoods should look like!

Our survey closes on Sunday, February 19th, 2023. We will use feedback from this survey (along with feedback gathered at various community meetings) to identify community priorities, and strategies to address issues these.

This survey will take approximately 8 minutes to complete. Your input is important and will help make South Delridge a great place to live and work.

About the emergency response at Summit Atlas

4:08 PM: Thanks for the tips about an SPD/SFD response at Summit Atlas, the charter middle/high school at 35th/Roxbury. We went over to check. Police were about to leave and told us that it was only a medical response and in the end, they weren’t needed. Tweets By Beat classifies the initial call as a possible overdose. We’re checking further with SFD, as the crew on scene was busy, so we don’t know yet whether a student was involved; a medic unit was originally dispatched (along with Ladder 13, which is what you see in our photo) but was dismissed within a few minutes of arrival.

4:14 PM: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo says their crew treated a 17-year-old girl who was taken to Children’s Hospital by private ambulance. She was in stable condition when transported.

SAVE THE DATE: Your next big chance for recycle/reuse dropoff in West Seattle

(March 2022 WSB photo)

Early alert: The West Seattle Junction Association and West Seattle Chamber of Commerce – with other partners such as Waste Management and Seattle Public Utilities – are teaming up for another recycle/reuse dropoff event this year, and the date is now set – Saturday, March 18th, starting at 9 am. This will again happen in the expansive north parking lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) on Puget Ridge. Other details – including exactly what they will and will not accept – are yet to come, but we did confirm that shredding is again part of the plan.

P.S. If you can’t get to that event, Fauntleroy Church‘s spring Recycle Roundup, also a free dropoff event, will be one month later, on Saturday, April 22nd.

FOLLOWUP: Parking-lot gates going in at West Seattle High School

Last August, we reported on a plan to add gates to the West Seattle High School parking lot, after longrunning complaints about after-hours use for illegal/dangerous activity. Today, gate installation is under way. Thanks to Pat for the tip; we just went over for a photo. We never did get info on what days/hours the gates will be open, so we’re following up with Seattle Public Schools. (This is the second day in a row we’ve had a note about the WSHS parking lot; Thursday we reported on a plan to put four portables in the lot, which would remove 30 parking spaces.)
