A friend who graduated from J-school with me 30 years ago sent a message saying she hadn’t expected to be present at the “end of newspaper publishing.” I can’t help thinking that’s not a good thing.

“Brochet said that right now the biggest problem will be the closure of the 1st Ave ramp onto the WS Bridge, when work starts on the actual added lanes (which will be built north of the existing SSV). When it’s closed, traffic from downtown will have to either go over the low bridge or take I-5 to return to West Seattle.”
My question (emailed to Art) is regaring getting information to drivers that there is a major bike route they will be crossing in the area and expect bikes to be on the roadway. I would expect Marginal to have higher traffic volumes due to 1st Ave construction as well.
I also emailed SDOT asking about the upgrades to the crossings on the east side of the lower bridge and if those upgrades will be installed before February’s traffic detours begin.

Wasn’t a West Seattle story, but I tweet a lot about non-WS stories that we stumble onto … our latest Twitter post is always in the turquoise box in the sidebar, and you can scroll through preceding ones with the little arrow in the box.
nonetheless, after getting a couple notes about the fire in the past hour, I called the Fire Department to get the info they had (what we saw while out wasn’t enough to hang a story on, it was just clear it was a Big Fire and some traffic diversion was happening) so here’s what I put up a while ago.

I try to keep an eye on the forum very often since breaking news sometimes turns up here, but that still isn’t as fast as e-mail.
jenny12, here are a couple of prior discussions about comcast/qwest/directv etc. FYI, I bundle Qwest, DSL, and Directv. I use my cell for long distance, so I opted for a pay as you use on Qwest. Flat rate per minute if I have to use it for some reason, but no ongoing monthly access fee. And I absolutely love Directv, btw.
I use google email (gmail), which works the same as yahoo. You can access from anywhere, anytime. It is not tied to an ISP. Hotmail works that way as well. Kind of a personal preference thing as to which one you use. They are all free.

The Spokane Street Viaduct (between 99 and I-5) widening/ramps project is indeed well under way – with work on the surface (that’s why lower Spokane Street has been closed for months between 1st and 4th) before the widening, ramp-building, etc. begins.

Clarification to #48. Do you mean the three murders in 2007? There was only one West Seattle murder in 2008 – Tracey Creamer, killed by her husband before he killed himself, last spring, Highland Park (I believe near 4th/Roxbury).
The three 2007 homicides were at Cal-Mor Circle (California just north of Fauntleroy), 59th/Admiral, and 37th/Findlay.
I say “homicides” and not murders because the third case, the 59th/Admiral one, resulted in exoneration of the teenage defendant on grounds of self-defense (in a case covered extensively here on WSB, and inexplicably in my view, nowhere else).

Re: number of signs, as I’m sure you recall, that’s all they had before – one “regular,” one toddler.
We personally were disappointed because we walked there all the time and often used the old swing set – if there had been any warning it was to be replaced, we would have made sure to get in a few last trips.
FT, note the date on that story. It’s from a year ago. We received the official media advisory on last year’s swim and have not received one this year, nor have repeated searches yielded one. So our conclusion is that it’s not happening. Still time to be advised otherwise, of course!

JimmyG, I agree w/you about what we should expect from city government. I went to a disaster preparedness meeting put on by the city last year and the message I got loud and clear was, when things go nuts (weather, earthquake, whatever), you are on your own so be prepared for that.
The street I live on is a major arterial with two bus routes. It was NEVER plowed throughout snowpalooza 08, I think I saw one bus go by the entire time, and I am grateful that my family was well prepared, didn’t have to go anywhere and we all like each other enough that staying home and enjoying the rare snow was feasible. But I am really unhappy on behalf of the folks who relied upon metro to get to jobs that don’t give them paid time off, and yeah, this garbage thing is getting awfully old.
It does frustrate me that, while other parts of King County and Puget Sound have active CERT programs (https://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/), the City of Seattle seems really resistant to them. Seattle apparently has some kind of alternative program that does not give the same degree of training CERT does, but since the city also does not seem able to provide adequate emergency response even in relatively minor emergencies one would think they would be eager to have willing volunteers take this on.
I did hear of one fatality resulting from the recent weather–a man living alone and in poor health near Ashford apparently froze to death and wasn’t found for a week. For people like that, I think there needs to be a much better safety net. It underscores the importance of community members needing to help each other out, and I think we saw a lot of good examples of that happening in these past couple weeks as well.
