West Seattle trash pickup: “Open thread” for Monday

(Map updated as of 4:02 pm with areas where WSB’ers have reported trash and/or recycling pickup)

As we reported last night, Seattle Public Utilities says it’s going to try to reach Monday-pickup homes today — for trash/recycling, NOT yard waste — and that would mean the first pickup in three weeks for West Seattle’s Monday neighborhoods. We’re opening this post for any updates on the trash situation during the day – both your sightings of trash trucks (leave a comment, or e-mail us) and also any new information we get.

9:40 AM UPDATE: Thanks for the updates! MargL sent the first “photographic proof” from Arbor Heights, when recycling pickup showed up first:

We’ve also received e-mail about sightings at 47th/Erskine and 64th/Hinds. Crunching a quick Google Map just to note where they’ve been so far. 10:36 AM NOTE: It’s REALLY windy out there right now … hope the accumulated, not-yet-picked-up trash/recycling is well-battened-down.

11:22 AM UPDATE: This note from Cass in Gatewood:

I just spoke with my recycling guy, who did pick up *all* my recycle. I asked him if he got paid for the 2 weeks he had to take off because the city wouldn’t plow the streets. NO PAY. He said he was new, so he didn’t have any accrued vacation time. It’s not HIS fault that he couldn’t work, so I don’t think he should’ve had to take vacation pay anyway. I told him they should sue the city for lost wages, and he looked at me like I was nuts. How many people lost wages because of this fiasco????? And the retailers who went broke?

11:39 AM UPDATE: Noted this in the comment section, but we’ve had a sighting in our neighborhood (this was on Sullivan near California):

Keep the sightings coming, and we’ll keep updating the Google Map that’s now atop this post. 2:14 PM UPDATE: Another truck has just passed through our neighborhood. By the way, a few scattered people around WS have reported yard-waste pickup too, though city reps had told us that was going to wait till after they caught up with trash and recycling. 2:33 PM UPDATE: Scott C sends word of a truck sighting along Alki Ave’s condo row – and a photo:

5:23 PM UPDATE: We just came back from a drive around some of West Seattle’s main streets. Saw a truck heading southbound on the south stretch of Beach Drive. Meantime, the latest official news release from Seattle Public Utilities came in while we were out – read on (note the update on yard waste):

Solid waste contractors picked up regularly scheduled Monday garbage and recycling today, and collections will be continued on a normal schedule this week for Tuesday and Wednesday customers. Due to the New Year’s holiday, Thursday (Jan. 1) customers will be collected on Friday, and Friday customers will be collected on Saturday.

All garbage and most recycling pickup is expected to be completed throughout Seattle by this Saturday, Jan. 3.

Yard waste service — including Christmas tree pickup — will be resumed next week for residential customers. Check your schedule for your next yard waste pickup date. Extra yard waste will be collected at no additional charge, through Friday, Jan. 16.

“SPU is working this week to get garbage collections back on track after the unprecedented winter storm,” said Hans Van Dusen, the city’s solid waste contracts manager. “If customers’ garbage has not been picked up on their appointed day this week, we want them to call us so that we can fix the problem.”

If for some reason your garbage has not been collected by 6 p.m. on your scheduled day, please call SPU’s Call Center, at 206-684-3000.

There will be no additional charge for extra garbage collected through this Saturday, Jan 3. (Recycling is always collected for free.) When setting out extra waste, customers are encouraged to place perishable food items in their collection containers and set bagged non-perishable items next to the containers.

Customers who have had their collections missed can also take their waste to Seattle’s Recycling and Disposal stations, where it will be accepted at no charge through Saturday, Jan. 3. Yard waste can be disposed of at the transfer stations through Friday, Jan. 16. The stations will be closed on New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan. 1.

SPU’s Call Center — 206-684-3000 — will be open extended hours this week, as well as on New Year’s Day and this weekend, to take calls from customers who have been missed on their normal pickup day this week. The Center is normally closed on holidays and weekends, but messages can be left during non-working hours.

The Call Center schedule this week is:

— Monday, Dec. 29 — 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

— Tuesday, Dec. 30 — 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

— Wednesday, Dec. 31 — 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

— Thursday, Jan. 1 (New Year’s Day) — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

— Friday, Jan. 2 — 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

— Saturday, Jan. 3 — 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

— Sunday, Jan. 4 — 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

45th N of Dakota now being picked up thankfully!

  • Terri December 29, 2008 (7:31 am)

The recycling truck just started down our street – 105th and 32nd. Thank you!

  • kinws December 29, 2008 (7:36 am)

35th & Findlay trash was picked up around 7:15 AM. Whew! Thank goodness! Still have my fingers crossed for recycle, which usually comes later in the AM.

  • Steph December 29, 2008 (7:47 am)

I have seen 3 trucks go by this morning (35th and Webster) but none have stopped at my house yet. We have a full can and about 7 large bags full of garbage. They better not charge us extra or I will be pissed. Trying to store garbage with two kids in diapers was not fun.

  • Patrick December 29, 2008 (7:55 am)

The two trash trucks that do a pas de deux just off California are more or less on schedule.

  • Pam December 29, 2008 (8:10 am)

woo-hoo! I hear garbage/recycling trucks – not sure which – near Stevens somewhere between 49th and 52nd. Ahhhhh…..was hoping they’d get to my trash before the raccoons or wind did! Looks like they might make it.

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (8:11 am)

Trash gone, recycling still awaiting pick-up. I can see flashing lights from trucks around the east-facing slope of the hill. Maybe I’m just excited to seem them, but seems like they may have extras out too – ?

  • austin December 29, 2008 (8:11 am)

Why are they just “going to try” to reach Monday pickup homes today? That seems kind of weird. At least it hasn’t gotten as bad as Naples..

  • JH December 29, 2008 (8:12 am)

I hear them near 51st/Hanford too-maybe on 52nd? They’re not here yet. Oh what a shock. I see a sneaky squirrel in my garbage now.

  • KD December 29, 2008 (8:18 am)

The music of trucks near 39th/102nd!

  • Sue December 29, 2008 (8:24 am)

My husband tells me our garbage was picked up this morning around 7:40 (which is only slightly later than normal time and this is our regular pickup day). We’re on the west side of Fauntleroy between Dawson & Hudson with alley pickup. They did pick up the second can we put out as well.

  • Sarah December 29, 2008 (8:38 am)

What? We have garbage pickup in WS?? Woohoo, I can’t wait! Our yard is overflowing with extra bags of garbage and recycle!!!

  • Gina December 29, 2008 (8:39 am)

Brought garbage out of garage late last night, but Ricky the evil Raccoon paid a visit. Garbage picked up, 45th and Lander this morning.

  • MargL December 29, 2008 (8:43 am)

Just got our recycling picked up on 34th between 104th and 106th. No sign of trash pickup yet.

  • J December 29, 2008 (8:44 am)

Recycling pickup is happening on California & Roxbury (Arbor Heights).

  • Julian December 29, 2008 (8:44 am)

Our trash was picked up – alley at California and Charlestown. Yay!

  • Jeff December 29, 2008 (8:55 am)

Trash was picked up here near 50th and Edmunds about an hour ago. Still waiting on the recycling.

  • west seattle golfer December 29, 2008 (8:58 am)

Saw two trucks on my way to C&P Coffee this morning.

    – What appeared to be a garbage truck on 44th between Findlay & Juneau
    – A recycling truck in the alley between 42nd & California (right behind C&P), also between Findlay & Juneau.

This was at 8:30 AM or so.

  • Renee December 29, 2008 (8:59 am)

Trashed picked up at 100th and 33rd! Never thought we would be so happy to see the garbage truck!

  • miws December 29, 2008 (9:04 am)

Recycle truck was stopped in my alley, 6500 block between California and 44th, around 8:15.

    .

Garbage Dumpster still (over)full, at this time. *Usually* it’s been picked up by this now.

    .

  • add December 29, 2008 (9:05 am)

Both trash & recycling picked up by 8:45am – about 2 hours later than normal – alley pickup on Gatewood Hill (between 38th & 39th). Hooray!

  • hopey December 29, 2008 (9:07 am)

Recycling truck came around 8:30am to our street immediately SW of Fauntleroy Park. (Technically not Arbor Heights, still Fauntleroy, but south of Barton.)

  • Scott (no, the other Scott) December 29, 2008 (9:16 am)

I hear a truck (but can’t see which sort) near 37/Hinds, although our regular pick-up is on Fridays. Not at our house yet so I can’t see if they are actually making pickups for sure. They didn’t show up Saturday or Sunday though, so fingers crossed they won’t wait for Friday again now.

  • MargL December 29, 2008 (9:20 am)

Yay! Now our trash is gone!

  • microveldt December 29, 2008 (9:21 am)

Still waiting for any sign of a garbage recycling pickup on Trenton off Fauntleroy. Guardedly optimistic that it will get picked up by noon. My fingers are crossed at least.

  • snowlion December 29, 2008 (9:25 am)

Fauntleroy/Dawson-area service came this morning – I didn’t hear a massive clank of bottles, so I have to assume it was trash – and it’s raining outside, so I’m not in a huge hurry to check, but it does sound like they are gradually making the rounds. :)

  • KD December 29, 2008 (9:28 am)

Recycling just disappeared on 39th in Arbor Heights. Two guys – one driving, one dumping the bins, and a third guy following the truck with a video camera recording the event! Shall my recycling be on the news???

  • Crista December 29, 2008 (9:38 am)

36th on 6500 block trash was picked up around 8ish today.

  • Leslie December 29, 2008 (9:41 am)

our garbage was picked up (44th & holgate)/recycle not so far
    Yeah!

  • arbor heights mom December 29, 2008 (9:45 am)

I have never been so happy to see the garbage guys. YAY!

  • Tim McMonigle December 29, 2008 (9:46 am)

Recycle was picked up near Waite St and Admiral (by the LifeCare Nursing Home). No garbage yet.

  • Denny December 29, 2008 (9:50 am)

I’m not waiting for them to come to me.

I got the thick big garbage bags, went to the dump this morning (referred to as Transfer Station), with Utility Bill in hand.

They were great, and I got rid of 3+ weeks of trash!

  • waiting & hoping... December 29, 2008 (9:51 am)

i’m at 53rd and Alki and haven’t seen/heard anything yet :-/ keeping high hopes cuz I see this raccoon couple EVERY night, without fail and they will feast like royalty tonight if the garbage isn’t picked up…

  • Fed Up Fred December 29, 2008 (9:56 am)

… not to mention the incredible, inexcusable negligence of snowy and icy conditions that would be laughed at in any regular snowy city but somehow cripple Seattle for weeks on end. Pathetic, and it starts from the top.

  • hopey December 29, 2008 (10:02 am)

We took advantage of the “free dump” to get rid of some large items which weren’t worth paying to dump. No hassles at all besides a good-natured “how many times have you been here today? Three, four?”
    .
We didn’t have to show ID or any other proof, but we did have to put our address on their paperwork.

  • lg December 29, 2008 (10:03 am)

53rd & charlestown just picked up. not sure if it was trash or recycling (it had red writing on it).

  • orcmid December 29, 2008 (10:03 am)

Rabanco truck just now sighted at SW Genesee and 44th Ave SW on the North side of the intersection (I heard the backup warning and I looked up from my desk to see it).

I put out both garbage and yard waste before I saw the notice about easing off on yard waste while they work to catch up.

OK, he picked up our garbage. I expect I’ll bring the yard waste back in for another two weeks, but I’m leaving it out until evening just in case.

  • Luckie December 29, 2008 (10:12 am)

Our recycling was picked up this morning, still waiting on trash. Near PCC.

  • Kimberley December 29, 2008 (10:15 am)

There was no Sat/Sun pick-up for Thurs/Fri customers off of Harbor Avenue. Hopefully they’ll pick-up today.

  • MargL December 29, 2008 (10:16 am)

Something to note – it’s windy enough to blow over an empty recycling cart. Probably don’t want to wait to bring them in or you might not have containers for next week! :-)

  • JH December 29, 2008 (10:19 am)

For those of you that actually haven’t witnessed raccoons digging through your garbage…I thought raccoons and/or coyotes were going thru my garbage, until I caught the squirrels red-handed! They can drag a bag 20 feet. Amazing little @)#@)$(*#)$.

  • MB December 29, 2008 (10:22 am)

My garbage and recycling is still pilling up, but I am also a Friday customer so we’ll see. I did want to note how disgusting my drive through West Seattle was on my way to work today. Trash cans and garbage ALL OVER THE PLACE. Pretty friggin nasty. Pathetic actually.

  • waterworld December 29, 2008 (10:33 am)

Having had enough visits by Bandit, we now keep a travel-size spray bottle with a mixture of ammonia and water in it, and we spray a small amount in the garbage when we put it in the can. Keeps the critters away.

  • MB December 29, 2008 (10:34 am)

    What a great idea :)

  • patricia December 29, 2008 (10:34 am)

Recycle trucks now at 64th & Hinds! This is great now all is picked up except green waste which will be at some other time in the future!

  • Dartanyon December 29, 2008 (10:36 am)

I was under the impression that Friday pickups were supposed to be made on Saturday, but alas, the rash piles on 23rd and on Delridge continue to grow.

  • JRC December 29, 2008 (10:47 am)

Looks like everything is picked up at 37th and 98th. Only one curious thing just saw the Recycle truck guy take take my can from my garage that was clearly marked as Garbage, and separated from the multiple marked recycle cans, and throw it into the recycle truck.
Another thing why do they make us separate the glass from the other recyclables when the pickup guy’s always just throw in in with the rest of the stuff?

    Jim

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (10:49 am)

Dartanyon – This was part of our ongoing reports over the weekend (Trash Watch? whodathunkit) – SPU said it was hoping to do that, and didn’t succeed. Now they’re going to try to get to those neighborhoods this Thursday while staffing crews on New Year’s Day, which usually they wouldn’t. But who knows … until trucks are seen … which is why we’re doing the crowdsourcing thing here. P.S. Anyone who is at work or otherwise reading from outside West Seattle – pouring rain and gusting wind now. And wind seems to be in the forecast for most of the week.

  • RobertSeattle December 29, 2008 (10:56 am)

    Jim,

They’ve been throwing the glass in with the other recylables for the past several months now – I think maybe West Seattle was a test case of the “all in one bin” concept without specially telling us so.

  • kevin December 29, 2008 (11:10 am)

11:05 – Recycle just collected in the 42nd SW and 100th alley. Still awaiting garbage pickup.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (11:19 am)

I believe I have read/heard that separation will not be required starting next year. Gotta look that up for sure.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (11:21 am)

And just as I finished rev 1 of the Google Map, pickup is in our neighborhood now, California/Sullivan …

  • mark December 29, 2008 (11:22 am)

No pickup here yet near 41st and Rose for either garbage or recycling. They usually pick up at 7-7:15am on Monday so I wonder if we will be missed again. Our street which was one of the worst (I was stuck on it even with AWD) is now clear so there is no excuse for it not being picked up. If they do not pick it up someone will have to pick it up from their yard due to the wind! I hope they come soon!

  • AlkiRagdoll December 29, 2008 (11:29 am)

Garbabe at my office (41st & Edmunds) was just picked up….. it was overflowing a huge bin.

  • Bogie December 29, 2008 (11:29 am)

I’m happy all of the Monday customers are getting the pickups, but meanwhile the rest of in WS that have Friday pickup are still going on week 3 with no service. I’ve been very understanding and patient about the situation, we have an extra can to use and don’t generate a lot of trash, so have no trash exposed. But I lost it this morning when I left for work to find a dog that had tipped my (previously secured) can over and was digging through it. As I went to clean it all up, I discovered a nice baggy of poo. I don’t have a dog, specifically for the reason I don’t want to pick up poo! So Thank You to the person who picked up their dog’s poo and put it in my can WITHOUT securing the lid. I had to pick up gross trash this morning and was late for work. I understand the limitations the city is working with, but our road was clear Saturday when they said they were going to pick up our trash, and we still have not seen a truck. Alright, done with my rant now…

  • GenHillOne December 29, 2008 (11:36 am)

On the critter repellant – if you have a litter box in the house – I always put the bag of scooped litter on the top of the can. The scent seems to deter them from digging any further (as it would me). It didn’t work with the extra bag though because they were able to come at it from a different direction. Worth a try though.

  • add December 29, 2008 (11:39 am)

Man it is REALLY windy now! Major gusting!

  • SD December 29, 2008 (11:44 am)

I’m on the west side of Fauntleroy between Raymond and Graham, with pickup on the alley between Fauntleroy and 41st. Trash pickup happened earlier this morning, but it doesn’t look like they picked everything up, and with the wind, empty garbage cans and unsecured garbage are strewn all over the alley–it’s a real mess out there. Recycling hasn’t come yet and there are newspapers and beer cans all over the place (blown by the wind, it looks like).

  • add December 29, 2008 (11:46 am)

Both garbage & recycling picked up in 6600 block between Morgan & Myrtle (I reported earlier but don’t see it on the map.)

  • add December 29, 2008 (11:47 am)

Ooops. meant to say between 38th & 39th Ave

  • SD December 29, 2008 (11:56 am)

Ooh, the power just went out briefly here after a particularly strong gust of wind, then (thankfully!) back on again after about 15 seconds.

  • Keith December 29, 2008 (12:05 pm)

I’ve been picking up a lot of trash myself this morning, thanks to overloaded containers tipping over in the wind! (We did get our garbage collected this morning, 44th& Oregon).

  • Scott (no, the other Scott) December 29, 2008 (12:08 pm)

My earlier audio contact at 37/Hinds was apparently just passing through… no garbage or recycle pickup yet. With the way the wind is going, there won’t be anything left to pick up when they get here, anyway… trash is flying around all down the block from tipped over cans and those “extra” bags everyone was encouraged to put out over the weekend.

  • jeannie December 29, 2008 (12:09 pm)

The garbage trucks picked up on the other side of my street this morning. I called Utilities; they said the trucks would probably be back later today to do my side. They were probably overloaded and had to dump their stuff before they could do my side. We shall see.

In the meantime, I emailed Council President Conlin recommending we get a reduction in our next utility bill for the missed pickups.

  • Tim McMonigle December 29, 2008 (12:11 pm)

Garbage now picked up at Waite and Admiral. I’ve been walking up and down the street clearing blowing containers. And obviously some don’t read the WSB…lots of yard waste containers out there. :)

  • Belvidere December 29, 2008 (12:15 pm)

Just a bit tired of hearing about the Monday people missing pickups for 3 weeks. Friday people are in the same situation. Will be over 3 weeks by the time they come on Saturday. I hope they come on Saturday. I fear the wind will keep them away. And yes there will be little to pick up as it is now blowing out of control everywhere.

  • miws December 29, 2008 (12:22 pm)

Decided to lie down around 10:15 a.m. Got up about 1.5 hours or so later. Looked out back window, trash still not picked up (6500 block bewtween Cal & 44).

    .

Saw somebody’s empty recycle bin in the middle of the alley, and was confused as to why, until the power popped off for maybe just under a minute, and I looked back out and saw how windy it was. Ugh!

    .

Sure hope we don’t have a repeat of the three-ish hour outage (or worse) from a couple of weeks ago!

    .

    Mike

  • Rick December 29, 2008 (12:44 pm)

Watched 4 garbage/recycle trucks in the same alley as mentioned above with lots of activity yet no pick up of garbage/recycle. How do I get a job with these folks?

  • Jen December 29, 2008 (12:45 pm)

Hmmm – we are at 44th and Genessee, 2 of 3 garbage containers were picked up. Any ideas for what should I do about the third? It’s possible they didn’t see it as it was wedged btw the yard waste and recycling containers. Should I call it in or leave it out next week and hope they take two containers and don’t charge me? Any guidance much appreciated!

  • KatHP December 29, 2008 (12:52 pm)

Piggy-backing on some others’ comments… it’s a bummer that the garbage is piling up (but I understand the position SPU has been in) but even WORSE that while we’ve left the cans out for days awaiting pick-up the squirrels have had a freakin’ field day. We cover and secure our cans tightly, but in our neck of the woods in Highland Park the squirrels CHEW through the lids in no time. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it. I had assumed it was birds! I’ve spoken to SPU about this a couple times in the past several months and they instructed me to call them and request a new garbage can, which they happily supplied at no cost. And I’m not just talking little nibble holes in the lids, I’m talking holes that can run 9 inches across and 2-4 inches wide. Then they pull out the garbage and it ends all over the place. Arghggh!

I asked why we couldn’t just purchase our own metal can but SPU has told me that we couldn’t do this because it isn’t “an approved can.” I guess going through can after plastic can makes sense?
We have used the Deer-Off spray which sometimes seems to work, but had run out of it and it isn’t always effective if you try to use it when it’s raining/snowing.

  • Rick December 29, 2008 (1:02 pm)

3 more trucks as of 1:00 and no pick up yet. It’s a 1 block long alley. Wish I had a business like this!

  • JH December 29, 2008 (1:03 pm)

Kat, I’m with you! The squirrels have practically chewed a hole thru my entire lid. I wouldn’t have believed it either had I had I not seen it either. I’m on my 3rd can. They’re like little humans. They can drag bags down the road! I gave up chasing them this morning after seeing three of them at it. I was already late to work. Argghhhh.

  • miws December 29, 2008 (1:08 pm)

Rick! We must be neighbors! (okay, we are) ;)

    .

Just actually saw them pick-up the recycle!

    .

    Mike

  • jsv888 December 29, 2008 (1:15 pm)

30th Ave SW (Highpoint) trash was picked up yesterday.

  • JH December 29, 2008 (1:18 pm)

    OMG I made a typo.

  • Bonnie December 29, 2008 (1:39 pm)

No garbage or recycling here on 39th and Henderson. The recycling is being blown all over the alley too and I had to pick it up a few times already.

  • miws December 29, 2008 (1:39 pm)

JH (and others), I’d caution you on confronting squirrels.

    .

From the reports on what they can do to a plastic garbage can lid, there’s no telling what a gang of the little buggers could do to a person’s ankles! ;)

    .

    Mike

  • Rick December 29, 2008 (1:45 pm)

We used to shoot the little squirrels out of pecan trees in Texas to keep ’em from stealin’ our nuts but folks there used to eat ’em too. Man bites squirrel! Tastes better than possum! Kinda like chicken, I guess.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (2:08 pm)

Jen – I would call and report it, so that even if you do have to put it out again next week, you will be on the record as having reported the miss and can challenge any erroneous billing.

  • biankat December 29, 2008 (2:29 pm)

Just checking in on the blogs…our recycling truck was in our Ocean View neighborhood (35th & Ocean View) right on time this morning: 7:30ish.

  • MNGirl December 29, 2008 (2:58 pm)

Our trash and recycling was picked up this morning on 50th and Genessee… It always irritates me that the “rules” tell us to leave the cans in a certain spot, etc etc and then when the guys unload them they never put the tops on the garbage cans tightly..so I got my exercise running down the hill after the can and cover..separately. Can we chain the tops to the cans? But at least it’s picked up. Oh Happy Day!

  • ellenater December 29, 2008 (3:00 pm)

We have now had both garbage and recycling picked up. YAY! Also total RAVE to the person who picked up everyone’s wayward cans during morning wind and put big rocks on the lids. You. are. awesome!

  • JH December 29, 2008 (3:10 pm)

51st/Hanford-both garbage and recycling picked up, but I don’t know when!

I have a posse of squirrels crying right now.

We had trash picked up on Alki Ave near the lighthouse this morning and I hear the recycling truck out there now.

  • miws December 29, 2008 (3:55 pm)

Ahhhh! Just when I was about to come in here and get a little rantish about it being nearly 4:00 p.m. and wondering if we’d been missed for a third pickup due to the lateness in the day, I hear the beautiful sound of a garbage truck, part the blinds (sun’s blasting in!) and see the beautiful garbage truck! :D

    .

I’ve been pretty understanding in all this, and wondered, as did at least one other WSB’er why they didn’t do the first pick ups at the places the longest missed instead of starting with those on their regular day. But, thinking about it, I figured it would be a logistical nightmare, and too hard to get back onto the regular schedule, once caught up.

    .

Had we been missed yet again, I would have gone back to thinking they should have gone with the longest without pick up first! ;)

    .

    Mike

The wind has been ripping up Trenton from the Sound and I had the priviledge of picking up my neighbor’s newspapers that were blowing straight up the street into my yard. A few hours later the garbage truck showed up and then finally the Recycle truck. I felt like I should have ran out and thrown flowers to him (except I didn’t have any)like the French did to the Allied liberators during WW2. Free of Trash at last!

  • Sue December 29, 2008 (4:20 pm)

Although our garbage was picked up this morning as I mentioned earlier today, our recycling and yard waste still sit uncollected. Normally the would’ve been long gone at this hour.

  • hopey December 29, 2008 (4:20 pm)

STILL no garbage pickup for this Monday customer just SW of Fauntleroy Park. We should have taken the can with us when we went to the dump over the weekend, dammit.

  • Todd December 29, 2008 (5:12 pm)

We are Monday pick ups too .. everyone else on our block got theirs picked up but not us for some reason. Going on week 4 with no trash pick up. “Thanks”

  • roundthesound December 29, 2008 (5:13 pm)

    Alki/Harbor intersection

Garbage was picked up about 3pm today but my recycling is still waiting outside.

  • Nate December 29, 2008 (5:21 pm)

35th & Austin, if you live on the North side of the street garbage was picked up this morning. I’m on the South side, still waiting for my garbage to get picked up. I guess I should have piled my trash up with my neighbor’s across the street. Terrible. F.

Just added the text of the latest city news release in the post above – it has some updated info on yard-waste status – TR

  • SeaviewSherman December 29, 2008 (6:32 pm)

Not sure if this is already posted, but just called the number (as directed by their press release) and heard a broadcast message. We are Monday customers and our recycling was collected, but not garbage. The instructions were to leave it out for a special pick up on Thursday, Jan 1. Holding our breath…literally. Okay, not literally, but you get the point. :-)

  • kevin December 29, 2008 (7:08 pm)

Arbor Heights – Around 100th and 42nd SW – recycle was picked up around 11AM and our garbage was picked up sometime in the afternoon while we were out.

  • WSB December 29, 2008 (7:10 pm)

Thanks, SeaviewSherman – Our updates last night mentioned the special “catchup” pickups planned for this Thursday, and that the Thurs/Fri people missed last week should keep theirs out for that, but today’s news release (as seen above) did not mention anybody from MONDAY needing to take advantage of that … we’ll check in with SPU to make sure that’s so. In normal weather (ha, what’s “normal”) it might not be such a big deal to just leave it out, but today is just the first of at least three blasts of wind due through here by week’s end, at last report, so knowing when to have it out and when not to have it out might be more critical. Some of what we saw during a pre-sunset drive suggests there’s no going back, in some overflow situations … yikes.

Hey Mike, thanks for the tip on the squirrels! I’ll make sure not to kick them.

  • alki_2008 December 29, 2008 (7:52 pm)

Monday customer here in Alki area. Garbage was taken this morning, but haven’t checked the Recycling container yet today.

For those that were missed while the neighbors were not – could it just be a case of full trucks? With all the extra garbage volume out there, it’s reasonable to deduce that the trucks are getting fuller sooner than usual and they have to make more frequent trips to wherever they unload – and maybe the drivers forgot where they “left off” when they head back out. Just a thought. It’s probably not intentional that some folks seemed to be skipped.

  • Susan December 29, 2008 (7:55 pm)

I just called SPU to report that our garbage has still not been picked up (last pick-up: Dec. 8th!). I received a different reply than SeaviewSherman – the very nice gentleman told me to put it back out Tuesday by 7:30 and it should be picked up. If not Tuesday, then Wednesday. This was for the neighborhood near 40th & Findlay. I sure hope they come tomorrow. My garage stinks!

  • heb December 29, 2008 (10:17 pm)

Admiral (near 51st), trash and recycling went. And thanks to the mystery neighbor that put our bins by our front door, out of the wind.

  • Alice December 29, 2008 (11:36 pm)

It’s an Alice map! You don’t need me anymore!

    :)

  • mellaw6565 December 29, 2008 (11:41 pm)

40th & Henderson – West side of 40th only had recycling p.u. – no garbage!! Today was supposed to be regular pickup. I’m really tired of their delays – it will be three weeks now.

  • TDe December 30, 2008 (6:30 am)

    We’re Monday pick-up customers… around 47th and Alaska/Oregon. No recycling pick-up yesterday.

  • TDe December 30, 2008 (8:40 am)

Good News… The recycling was just picked up West of the Calif/Alaska junction. They are still catching up on Monday pick-ups.

  • Kris December 30, 2008 (9:32 am)

40th and Director trash picked up Tuesday at 6:30 am. Recycle picked up Monday 11 am. Phew!

  • E December 30, 2008 (10:40 am)

When our garbage man came by yesterday I could have huged him! Thank you Thank you Thank you.

  • Sue December 30, 2008 (1:34 pm)

My garbage was picked up yesterday and my recycling was picked up this morning. Fauntleroy/Dawson. This was a yard waste week, but they haven’t picked that up yet. However, in 6 days they’ll waste their time coming back to me for recycling since today’s pickup was in an off week.

Sorry, comment time is over.
