I have no idea how to lobby, but I am so sick of pathic people running puppy mills and people being cruel to animals, I am going to Olympia for an event the Humane Society has posted on their site. I would like to find a couple of people passionate about animal rights to go to Olympia with me. I will drive.

This event starts in the morning, Thurs. Feb. 12th(so plan on taking the day off from work). A Humane Society rep will speak to the entire group advising us on what to do. I have no idea how many people will be participating but I imagine 50 – 100+? from all over the state. You may

Also note that Furry Faces has just gotten involved with a show coming up at the Admiral Theater on February 13th. I haven’t even condensed it into the Events calendar yet but here’s the full text of the news release I got tonight:

CATHY SORBO AND ROD LONG BRING THEIR COMIC

ANTI-VALENTINE SHOW TO THE ADMIRAL THEATER

(The show will Benefit Furry Faces Foundation)

Seattle, WA — (January, 2009) — Aptly named, “Love Sucks” (when it’s good), comics Cathy Sorbo and Rod Long bring their skewed love observations to the historic Admiral Theater in West Seattle. It’s not lost on them that the February show falls on Friday the 13th.

“This is kind of an anti-valentine show,” muses Sorbo. “February 14th puts a strain on single people or those who might not be dating currently. Even couples in love will undoubtedly recognize some of the dumb things we all do in relationships and get a chuckle.”

Sorbo and Long will present their stand-up embellished with relationship themes and cap the evening off with a mini-counseling session with the audience.

“Love ain’t all hearts and roses,” submits Sorbo. “I’ve been married going on 18 years now, but I’m still a recovering tramp — you know what they say: one day at a time.”

Sorbo says the dating thing tends to be biased. “Girls go to way more trouble to look good for a date. Guys just stand back, look in the mirror and decide whether to wear their baseball cap forward or backward.”

Rod Long weighs in on his participation:

“I can’t wait to get my twice-divorced a$$ onstage and give out sound relationship advice.” He adds, “I have always found that people are always in such ridiculous emotional transition that it’s hard to find somebody that just might be your soul mate. You take your chances with internet. People always lie. The only site I’d trust is E-Felon.com. At least you know the picture is current and where they hang out at night!”

The show will also serve as a benefit for Furry Faces Foundation. The foundation aides in many programs that benefit people and their pets. For example; “It’s Hip to Be Snipped” program helps fund spay/neuter of pets whose people who are on fixed/limited incomes and also the spay/neuter of feral cats.

The group who encourages, adoption—instead of shopping also sponsors “Oliver’s Fund” which assists people on restricted income with unexpected veterinarian bills, food and other pet care necessities. They seek out donations of quality pet food which is disbursed to individuals on our Oliver’s Fund client list and to Seattle Area food banks.

The Admiral is asking people to bring;

• Dog Leashes, cat/dog treats, grooming brushes/combs

• Cat and dog toys, which we will give to shelters for cat and dog environment enrichment programs

• Fleece blankets

• Nutritionally sound dog and cat food such as Taste of the Wild; Canidade/Felidade; Nutro/Max Cat; Precise.

Gavin, non-legitimate solicitors are a common topic. These links don’t address your specific situation today, but might have some general info for you. It looks like others email Tracy (blog editor/owner editor@westseattleblog.com ) and she posts the current ruse on the home page.

I agree. Based on what you have written here, I think you should first switch your phone service to Qwest with no extras.

Since your computer is an Apple/Macintosh computer, it is unlikely that your computer is infected by a virus that makes your computer part of a botnet. Home computers running Microsoft Windows and hooked up to a cable modem or a DSL modem are the most likely victims/perpretators.

I dunno about that. To be frank, I suspect you are causing your own problems by sending email directly insteading of sending email to your ISP’s email server. An ISP’s email server is usually excluded from DNSBLs AFAIK.

My personal internet service is Qwest DSL, and my ISP is avvanta.com.

Maybe you should take small steps. I thought your main concern was the voice quality of your phone calls. If that is the case, then Qwest phone service utilizing a pair of copper lines currently provides the best voice quality AFAIK.

The phoneline copper pair goes directly into every home that can have phone service, and a telephone hooked up to the phoneline copper pair currently provides the best voice quality.

It is the “gold standard” for home phone service.

If you use Qwest for your phoneline, then I suggest you buy the cheapest phone service possibe and request no long distance service for your phoneline (1-800 and 1-888 numbers will still work) then buy a long-distance card at CostCo. That would be the cheapest. Long-distance calling is dirt-cheap compared to thirty years ago.

The phone company Qwest (Qwest used to be USWest) has the best phone service, not a cable TV company.

That means that a Qwest phoneline will keep working even if the electricity to your house is off during a power outage. Don’t worry about the “‘offhook’ alarm” because that is beyond your skill level and beyond almost all consumers’ skill level.

No.

Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) block port 25 as an anti-spam measure, and Comcast has also recently begun doing so, to the entire internet’s relief.

If an ISP blocks port 25, that prevents an end user from sending email directly from his/her home computer without using his/her ISP’s email server. Don’t worry if you don’t understand that. Just remember it is an anti-spam measure.

If you want to remember a little more about port 25: some end users like to use their home computers as servers even though that is prohibited by their ISP unless the end user pays extra money in order to not look like a spammer.

Port 587 is used for outgoing email if port 25 is blocked. That is unnecessary if you are using your ISP’s email server (probably smtp.comcast.net) for outgoing email.

Some call center customer service representative you spoke to did not understand what he/she was reading from the script.

The reason Comcast blocked port 25 is to cut down on the entire internet’s spam load. Comcast has a huge number of customers (end users), and many of Comcast’s end users’ Microsoft Windows computers are infected by viruses to the extent that those boxes are part of worldwide botnets that are currently the number one source of email spam (and worse).

The Comcast “tech-support” script reader you talked to should have stayed with you until your email software was configured to send email only to Comcast’s email server instead of being able to send email directly via port 587.

Port 110 is standard for incoming email. Don’t worry about it.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is used for encrypted connections. Don’t worry about it for now. You can use it later if you want to after your email is working normally.

I suspect that is because your computer is sending email directly instead of using your ISP’s email server. Your ISP’s email server is probably named something like smtp.comcast.net

If you turn on phone service with Qwest but keep your internet access through Comcast, then there will be no difference regarding your email. Your phone service will be separate from your internet access and your email service.

If you get Qwest phone service but keep your Comcast internet service, and your phone is plugged into the Qwest phoneline jack instead of whereever Comcast had it plugged into, then Comcast will have no effect on your Qwest phoneline.

Also, your feeder may have been visited and you just missed it. Likely a single hummingbird will “claim” your feeder, then sit off somewhere and guard it.

Incidentally, the red color in the nectar is completely unnecessary and probably harmful. As long as there is some red coloring on the feeder itself, they will find it. (Four parts boiling water, one part granulated white sugar – fill feeders when nectar cools).
