Let’s See… Feds Abusing their Power.

    1. AP reported the Obama Administration using secret email addresses. http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_289563/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=NOPRHOIl

Transparancy as reported by Michele Malkin…

Hostility to transparency, of course, has been a hallmark of this administration from top to bottom. As I reported from the very first days of the Obama regime’s vampiric tenure:

–Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for years fought disclosure of massive donations from foreign governments and corporations who filled her husband’s library and foundation coffers.

–Former Labor Secretary Hilda Solis failed to disclose that she was director and treasurer of a union-promoting lobbying group pushing legislation that she was co-sponsoring.

–Attorney General Eric Holder overruled his own lawyers in the Justice Department on the issue of D.C. voting rights (which he and Obama support) and refused to make public the staffers’ opinion that a House bill on the matter was unconstitutional. His stone wall of obstruction extends from the New Black Panther Party voting rights case to the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal to the Solyndra green boondoggle bankruptcy and Gitmo closure plans and conflicts of interests — all while touting a new “Open Plan for Government” from which he has conveniently exempted himself.

–Former No. 2 official at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, former King County, Wash., Executive Ron Sims, had the distinction of being the most fined government official in his state’s history for suppressing public records from taxpayers.

–Former green czar Carol Browner infamously bullied auto execs to “put nothing in writing, ever.” She was singled out by the White House’s own oil spill panel for misleading the public about the scientific evidence for the administration’s draconian drilling moratorium. The Interior Department inspector general and federal courts blasted drilling-ban book-cooking by both Browner and former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who falsely rewrote the White House drilling-ban report to doctor the Obama-appointed panel’s own overwhelming scientific objections to the job-killing edict, as a culture of contempt and “determined disregard” for the law.

Remember: While head of the Clinton administration’s EPA, Browner ordered a staffer to purge and delete her computer files to evade a public disclosure lawsuit. Lambasted by the judge for “contumacious” behavior and contempt of court, Browner claimed it was all an innocent mistake — and blamed her young son for downloading games on her work computer that she was trying to erase.

And in case you’d forgotten, Obama set the tone by breaking his transparency pledge with the very first bill he signed into law. In January 2009, the White House announced that the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act had been posted online for review. Oopsy: Obama had already signed it — in violation of his “sunlight before signing” pledge to post legislation for public comment on the White House website five days before he sealed any deal.

In 2010, corporate lobbyists met hundreds of times with administration officials at Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, even on a side lawn — with the express purpose of circumventing the public’s right to know. The coffee loophole klatches were arranged by Team Obama members using, you guessed it, personal email accounts to communicate with the influence industry.

When Obama vowed that “transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency,” he didn’t mean “touchstones.” He meant sinkholes.

Now, when Mr. Sunshine touts his reveal-as-we-say-not-as-we-conceal record, I’ll welcome company from the Johnnies-come-lately of the White House press who see the truth and laugh out loud, rolling on the floor.

And it is only going to get worse.

    Hello folks,

I am building a roster of West Seattle-based performance spaces for the project I’m working on. I know Kenyon Hall, HPIC, Youngstown, Twilight, C & P Coffeehouse are available and have utilized a few of them so far with success.

But, I’m looking for a stage-space (from black box to full-sized venue with or without bar service) that would be open to housing a literary and performance non-profit for a period of time – or even an empty storefront that wants temporary tenants until they have a permanent lease on their empty space.

I’m trying to keep it in the Junction area and it’s a bit of a pipe-dream…but this is a long-term project that fits the California Corridor rather well.

    Thought I’d ask :)

Feel free to drop a note at: athena@unslam.org

    Thanks!

A friend in Columbia City is desperate to find a home for her cat, Neko. Please contact kellyjolyn@gmail.com if you are interested.

“We need to find a new home for our beloved cat as soon as possible. Both of our small kids are allergic to her, especially our 13 month old, and it really just isn’t possible for us to keep her anymore.

Neko is a beautiful, black and white, short-haired kitty. I think she is part Siamese. She was born in 2000, so she is 13 years old. She is healthy and happy. Her only ‘health condition’ is that she had a urinary tract infection in the past and so she eats semi-special food (We just use Purina One Urinary Tract Health).

She is an indoor/outdoor cat, but would also be happy just in an apartment. She likes to play and likes to snuggle. She knows about forbidden furniture and is really good about not scratching, etc.

Neko definitely would fit best with an individual or family that doesn’t include kids or other pets. She has slowly adjusted to our children but is definitely still a little fearful of them. She is gentle and shy and extremely loving when she gets to know you.

Please let me know if you are in a position to adopt her. We would be so grateful!”

That is right, anytime anyone is concerned about anything, they are a nimby/complainer/fuddy duddys who just do not know how to have fun…….

For me, the issue is that the parks/city are frequently (almost every weekend now) giving out permits for big, pay to play, sponsored events, that take up a significant portion of the park for most, if not all, of the daylight hours, and there is no notice to anyone that the space has been reserved. When I go to Lincoln park to set up a BBQ, I know exactly what areas are first come first served and what covered areas have been rented and when, because there is a sign up, same for a foot race, community fair, or most any other type of event. It is frustrating to come down to alki at 10:00 am, set up a net on one of the empty poles, only to be told 20 minutes later by someone (with a permit) that we have to leave the area because they have paid for the privilege to be there. No signs, no notice, nothing to indicate to me that we have a limited window to use the park. I am not even able to rent a net area if I wanted to, like you can for a covered picnic area, because outside of these larger events, the nets are supposedly first come first served. All I have repeatedly suggested is that the parks dept. takes into consideration how many of these events are allowed each month and to set up some sort of schedule board (could even be done on the outside of the community center) showing when the volleyball areas have been reserved for licensed events. That way I can plan ahead of time, especially as it is not as simple as setting up a net in any old park area, at it needlessly tares up the park grass and there is a much larger potential for other nearby kids to be hit in the head with a heavy object, as younger/newer players are still learning coordination and volleyballs will go haywire.

Hands down the best realtor I have ever had the pleasure to work with is Hannah Nerbovig. It is an understatement to say she goes the extra mile. Always up front and honest. And very good at looking ahead at anything that may arise so that you can be ready for it. Prepared would probably be the best way of describing her. We have been with her for 10 years now and she has proven not only to be a great realtor, but an invaluable resource. We’ve sold two properties and bought one and it has always been a great experience. Seriously, look her up.

I checked the Seattle Parks site, and it seems they don’t have a program to reserve the volleyball areas (unless I’m too inept to find it). I would think that means that nobody can kick you off, regardless of how much more “important” their game is than yours.

Here’s the list of public recreation facilities available for reservation. Volleyball is conspicuously absent:

I can assure that if you are paying prices in the twenties you are not paying for a licensed, insured & bonded business as they could not pay all the required taxes and expenses to run a business on that.

If you don’t think it is important to hire someone licensed you may want to call your home owners insurance and they will explain why! Besides you being personally/financially responsible for any injuries (slipping on wet floors, cleaning a shower etc) you are also responsible for all payroll taxes on a person you hire to work in your home if they are not licensed. That means social security & medicare taxes, L & I taxes and collecting there federal tax payments. Failure to do so can make you financially responsible to the IRS not them. Only a licensed business has the tax id number to pay those taxes on their own and that is why the charge more for their services because they are paying expenses far above a person working under the table pays. Having a person work in your home for money under the table may be cheap up front but if they are injured in your home watch out because you could be the one paying medical bills, lost wages, permanent disability etc. buy potentially losing your home in a lawsuit or at the least owing back taxes for your employee. It pays to do your research on such liabilities. Anything in the Seattle area under $70.00 hr for a team of two or $35.00 hr for one person is probable not licensed and most definitely probably not paying for liability insurance for personal injuries and any potential damages to your home. Be careful what you pay for.

For those of you who travel this route in the morning and may not be aware, here’s a little tip:

Merriam-Webster definition of MERGE: Blend or fade gradually into something else so as to become indistinguishable from it.

Please note the “blend gradually” and “become indistinguishable” portions of that definition.

That does not mean “stop and put your blinker on until someone lets you in”. It means keep the pace with traffic, put on your signal, and merge over when you see an opening. Or, if you feel that a turn signal means that the other driver will be an a$$ and will make sure you don’t get in (which can be the case), then speed up or slow down until you can snake into an opening that fits your car. However, this does NOT meaning cut people off or slamming on your brakes in front of a semi! If you are going with the flow of the traffic, and “merge”, good things will happen.

I realize that it becomes a Bus Lane fairly soon after that initial quarter mile, however, let me assure you that your car WILL NOT blow up if you go a little further than immediately getting onto Highway 99. Don’t putz along but, keep that car moving and BLEND GRADUALLY.

Following this little rule would certainly make our commute a bit smoother.

Public Safety Message brought to you by “roughly 1/4 of the West Seattle commuters that already know this rule”.

I’ve been using Comcast Business service for internet for a couple of months now and I really like it. Being on the business side, it does cost a little more but you get a service level agreement (SLA) for downtime. I resisted as long as I could not to have Comcast but I recently moved to Alki and they were my only viable option (I had CenturyLink ‘fiber’ service in Highland Park and LOVED it).

You can “bundle” the Business service as well, but I opt not to as I don’t watch TV or need a home phone.

    Good luck.

Ken I would like to join you.

Getting from 35th to west of California is ridiculously long (3 – 4 light cycles) on Alaska with the one lane change, so I have been going to Avalon instead. If they screw up Avalon there will be a lot of people going back to using Alaska, including the bus only lane. The peasants need to revolt against being screwed with.

As for who is behind this, clearly Mike Mcginn and Dave (forget his last name) the guy who Mcginn hired as his Bike czar.

@Ken – glad to see your comments. Many people don’t know that CenturyLink has been improving the infrastructure and the speed of DSL you can get does vary by location, so you may be in an area that can get super-fast and just not realize it. It’s worth a call at least since it’s really competitive with Comcast rates and can be bundled too for discounts.

Now Verizon and the NSA. It was bad under Bush, it is worse now under Obama. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/06/nsa-phone-records-verizon-court-order

    Not exactly Fox News Dobro.

In fact the news media has been slow to the party on most of these scandals (or news items if you prefer).

    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2013/06/06/Mainstream-Media-Did-Not-break-Even-One-of-Four-Obama-Scandals

Imagine all of this happening under the Bush Tenure. You guys would be foaming at the mouth. Just like the Iraq war, you wouldn’t have stopped. I remember Abu Ghraib and waterboarding at Gitmo. Day after day you guys griped, but you sure are quiet regarding Benghazi. Oh that’s right. A Democrat is the President so it must be OK.

Dobro One liberal group was turned down, but for almost three years the IRS did not allow the groups with Patriot or Constitution or other such words to be given non-profit status. Dobro, the IRS went too far in asking what these groups read, donor lists, people of interest, and went way beyond the scope of what the agents could ask.

I would not want this to happen to any group.

Even if I didn’t like them. You are pulling pieces of thread from a scarf to prove a one sided point.

So why won’t Lois Lerner talk? I am appalled at the lack of responsibility coming from out leaders, elected, appointed, etc. Eric Holder needs to resign. It must go deep at the IRS because they ain’t talking anymore.

The Bureaucrats, Democrats, and many Republicans have shown they are not accountable. Wait until the Feds turn on you too!!

CL now has 20mg service available in DSL as long as you make CL your ISP. (probably available in certain areas, but historically mine was the end of the line for upgrades (Highpoint))

it’s fast (18.8Mbps avg)down and kinda slow (.896Mbps) upload. The upload is still faster than the t-1 lines used in the 90’s (and the current tier of budget DSL) when used symmetrically. Another 10.00 a month get you a 5.00 Mbps upload speed.

I am pretty sure none of you use a fraction of the speed you are paying for from comcast. I switched all my servers over to hosting or tunneled ipv6 to move to the 20meg tier.

BTW: NO down time this year. (I have apps that record ping times to my hosted servers.)

We loved our experience at Bright Horizons West Seattle. We left because our son secured a spot at Bright Horizons’ center at Starbucks HQ, which is less expensive than West Seattle because of an effective Starbucks employee discount. Otherwise, West Seattle is less expensive, and it is a wonderful center. :) They have a somewhat Montessori approach, including no baby “containment devices” (besides cribs for napping), no electronic toys, no TV (obviously), hands-on activities and experiments (even for infants), some foreign and sign language education, and plenty of imaginative play.

I did read your post carefully.

was i extracting financial retribution when i took my business away from other local nurseries and gave it to Vera?

or only when i decided that maybe i didn’t want to go out of my way to help her as much as i had thought i did?

The growers who lost my business when i transferred it to Vera didn’t lose it because they were doing a bad job or were providing a poor product.

they lost it because i arbitrarily went out of my way to transfer that business to vera.

I am still spending the same amount.

    My business has stayed local.

And.. it’s a lot less hassle for me.

No business is owed customers. They earn them.

you could say it’s the American Way

    edsane..

it isn’t exacting financial retribution to choose to no longer go out of my way to support a local business when i no longer feel comfortable going there.

i have never had a personal relationship with Vera. Her hours and steep driveway are not conducive to patronage by someone who is disabled and who can not easily schedule good health during the hours she is open.

However, after hearing about her struggle to stay in her house and in business, i made an extraordinary effort to spend my plant dollars there last year.

in the aftermath of her choice to schedule Michelle at her business on the same night that an alternate program had been scheduled at Meanders to fill the void created by the cancellation she says she supported …

and the insidious facebook calendar notice that went out to those who had originally RSVPd for the Meander’s concert…

I no longer feel i need to go out of my way to support the business of someone who so obviously didn’t appreciate the effort I and others made to keep her afloat …

and it would literally be going out of my way.

I only chose to speak up when people supporting Vera chose to characterize Miranda’s choice to cancel the concert and present an alternative program as a gambit to increase business at Meanders

and you chose to characterize my choice to no longer shop at Village Green as financial retribution.

Each and every one of us has a choice where to spend our dollars.

I actually ate at a Salty’s restaurant a few weeks ago because i love the location but for the most part i no longer spend my dining dollars in Salty’s because of that offensive van he parked out front during the presidential elections.

i got out of the habit of shopping at Target during their little brush with homophobic behavior… so i don’t go in there much any more either.

and i no longer try to plan my day to include a stop at Vera’s business.

    customers are fickle..

it took a lot to get me in her door to begin with…

and i might have chosen a wait and see attitude if

I hadn’t been one of those who got an unwanted facebook notice of Michelle’s last minute appearance at Village Green …

a notice that kept re-appearing in spite of every attempt i made to delete it…

and attached itself to my location for the entire evening on the vacation pictures i tried to post from a restaurant at the coast..

not only was i constantly reminded that Michelle would after all be appearing in West Seattle that night..

i was forced by her Michelle’s efforts to advertise her show on my facebook page…

to say i resented that is putting it mildly.

I know that Vera didn’t produce that announcement..

but she made the decision to allow Michelle to use her and her business in a way that made me very uncomfortable…

and that discomfort was not alleviated by her public behavior immediately following the concert.

making me feel uncomfortable wasn’t the way to keep my business.

I am aware that Vera made a mistake…

and i was aware of the apology she eventually made on the Stranger…

but that doesn’t mean that i owe her my business now…

or that stating that is somehow vindictive

context matters… I would have been unlikely to post about this at all had the mere fact of posting the circumstances of that concert and the understandable outrage at what Vera characterized in her post to the Stranger as a huge mistake on her part not created the need to present Vera as the victim.

I sincerely hope she repairs her relationships within the gay community.

I hope she repairs her relationships withing our local advocacy community.

I wish her and her business well.

but it would take a lot for me to once again go out of my way to make an effort to patronize her business…

labeling me vindictive for making a shopping choice… as though i owed anyone my business simply because they live near me…

is only likely to make me feel less comfortable there.. not more.

Vera hasn’t seen much of me this year, but the local businesses i patronized before making an effort to spend my dollars with her are happy to have me back.

LOL I realized that when I got home 3-4 hour after posting here and on Craigslist and my email was on fire. For a fleeting moment I thought “whoops, need to pull the listing and charge more” but that didn’t seem very appropriate or ethical. I am just glad a WSB member got to me first, because the people here have been very kind and have given me so much. So it’s a win win

I’ve admittedly never shopped at VG, but certainly know OF Vera from a number of friends and just seeing her name in various community settings. So I’ve no personal ill will toward her at all, and continue to give her the benefit of the doubt. There’s no way I’d slap her with an “anti-LGBT” label over this, since I was not there when the decision was made to allow Michelle Shocked onto VG property, and there’s just no one to know the full extent of what went down. I do know, however, that it was pretty unsettling for Miranda (who many may not be aware rent(ed) property from Vera) as Michelle was pretty much smack dab in Miranda’s front yard, putting on her performance, as her girls were in the home, wondering what the heck was going on and why this woman they knew their mama had recently had a “run-in” with was there.

So rather than be sucked into the negative aspect, sitting here and bashing Vera or her business, I’ll instead support and uplift Miranda and hers. I know people are calling for this whole matter to be put to rest, but it sounds like it’s negatively impacting and effecting someone who was/is pretty well known in our community. Has Vera made a statement about why she made the choice she did? I don’t know if it would help or hurt her more at this point, but if she’s being unfairly slammed, I would think she’d want to make attempts to clear this matter up. Or perhaps it’s just a case of, “They’re going to think what they want to think. Can’t please them all. Those who know me will continue to support me. Those who don’t, I bid thee farewell.”
