    Hi itsme:

I may be playing Devil’s Advocate here (and I’m NOT trying to be contentious at all) but I’d like to make one comment and want to ask just a couple of questions.

When you say, “There is no purpose for these trees” I get that you may be coming from a place of landscaping or agricultural purpose? These particular trees actually create habitat for birds, and help our overall tree canopy in Seattle, which has been declining for years.

So, to my question–you specifically moved to an area with a greenbelt, so you obviously have an appreciation for the nature and the ecosystem represented there–is that right? Therefore, is there some way to think of the trees as PART of the view, and part of the ecosystem rather than thinking of them as nuisance view-blockers?

Like I said, I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m genuinely interested in your issue.

We live with a greenbelt in back of us (I guess it is city-owned… it is NOT private property). There are ever-increasing numbers of poplar/alders (not sure of what kind… the tall, medium-thin kind you see on picturesque farm land for wind breaks) that keep growing, multiplying and therefore blocking our view (and the many neighbors’ as well). There is no purpose for these trees; they must have just seeded there a long time ago. Is there some way to contact the city to remove them, or cut them or do we have some way we can band together as a neighborhood and cut/trim them? I don’t like needlessly cutting trees, but we did pay for a view that we are losing to these trees.

We use Centurylink for our landline. (We decided we needed this still – my cell coverage in the house is spotty (Tmobile) and my husband rarely turns on his cell (Virgin mobile) when at home.) We have Clear for internet. Like Sam-C, our modem had chasing bars for periods of time during the weekend. When the finally stopped it was slow. We have a friend in Greenlake who use Clear hotspot and they’re happy with that. However, they may be in an area with more/better Clear towers. We are thinking about Centurylink for internet but haven’t made an effort to do it.

why oh why is it so hard to find decent internet service in a city like Seattle. it’s ridiculous.

after this weekend, we’ve been trying to figure out which internet service to switch to. Clear has been so unreliable lately, and the modem just spent the past weekend blinking….. blinking….blinking….blinking…..blinking….blinking….. never could get it up and running. started working again Monday (1 bar). attempted to go visit them at Westwood but they are no longer there. (couldn’t figure out their customer service # w/out internet.) will have to write that number down if we don’t find something better.

sounds like century link is slow but it sure has gotta be faster than Clear.

CenturyLink is the traditional telephone provider, their DSL internet leaves a lot to be desired and is slow. If you work from home via VPN, stream lots of multimedia (Netflix, Hulu), or do online gaming (Xbox Live, PSN) it’s not enough.

Comcast has the city approved monopoly on Cable TV and Cable Internet (they also provide VOIP telephone but keep in mind that doesn’t function in a power outage). Comcast has the best internet speeds and will cost you somewhere between $30-60 for just internet. You can ask for their unadvertised $16 “Limited Basic Cable” if you don’t care too much about TV.

Clearwire has citywide wireless internet, I’ve heard very mixed reviews by neighborhood depending on location, trees, topography. Last I talked to them they had a no-penalty trial period to determine if the service functioned properly in your home but I nixed the idea when I heard the performance with Xbox Live was lackluster.

There’s another much smaller cable company (Broadstripe?) but I don’t think it services West Seattle but I’ve heard tons of complaints from my friends in Lower Queen Anne and the International Dist about how awful it is.

Just last week I made that decision for my 10 year old indoor cat. I was pleasantly surprised to not get any hassle from the Lien Animal Clinic, other than requiring me to sign a waiver for the rabies vaccine, acknowledging that I’d been notified of the liability issues (should my cat bite someone or get out and get bit himself).

When I did vaccinate in the past, I have to say Lien was really good about not over vaccinating. A place I went to previously (not in Seattle) gave that poor cat a zillion shots, and required boosters at first a few weeks later. I had never cared for a cat before as an adult, so I didn’t know better. When I got to Lien, they said as an indoor cat he didn’t need all that, and they did rabies every 3 years and maybe one other shot.

yeah, it’s been there quite some time…at least 2 years or so. I totally understand, though. I’m constantly discovering new buildings, etc, that seem to spring up in days, and then I remember how long it’s been since I was in that area…it’s a constant “Damn, when did that happen?” – lol

Geez, I hadn’t noticed until today. Guess I’m usually focused on the traffic and don’t drive that way much. I was surprised. Thanks Mike.

That’s actually been there for awhile.

It apparently replaced the stop that was northbound on California, in front of Keller-Williams Realty, and Shadowland.

I s’pose Metro, thought having the stop on Oregon, was the lesser of two evils, as there was not enough room after the left turn, for the bus to pull completely to the curb, and especially with the articulated coaches, the tail end would stick out well into the traffic lane.

Driving East on Oregon this afternoon, I came to a sudden unexpected stop, finding myself in a line of snarled traffic, trying to cross California Ave. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was as traffic backed up behind a Metro bus, further and further down Oregon. Maybe the bus broke down – maybe there was a problem with the light on California & Oregon – maybe someone was having a problem in the crosswalk. Nope! When the bus was finally able to turn right (South) onto California, I saw a new bus stop, right next to the Chase (formerly WA Mu) Bank, on Oregon. No place for the bus to pull over to pick up passengers and no way for traffic to move when the left turn lane is packed because of oncoming Westbound traffic… Seriously, Metro?

I don’t even have the words to express my thoughts and feelings about this. Actually, I do but I know I’d be censored, and rightfully so!

West Seattle Auto Works. Hands down.

A couple of years ago, my 94 year old mom’s Chevy Cavalier started doing some utterly bizarre electrical stuff. My brother and I were freaked. We are both somewhat “motor heads”, and were stumped.

West Seattle Auto Works IMMEDIATELY diagnosed the problem as a shot alternator. The car was IMMEDIATELY fixed. For cheap.

They have earned my trust. Period. One of the owners previously worked on Ferraris. Enough said.

We recently moved to West Seattle from the east coast and are really falling in love with this community. Our current lease is about to expire, and we are looking for a new place to call home. While in DC, we relied on the vibrant craigslist market, but I wonder if there are other resources here in West Seattle that others could direct us towards? TIA.

JoB, I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw this thread. I would much rather get a whiff of an electric cigarette, or a regular one for that matter, than some of the nasty perfume I’ve smelled.

People can carry around, and give off, all sorts of disagreeable smells. Many of those smells will contain SOMETHING toxic if you want to get down to molecular level analysis.

I don’t smoke, and don’t like the smell of it. I’m glad the days of walking into a bar and being slapped in the face with a blue haze are over. But this anti-nicotine thing, particularly when it’s smoke free, is going too far.

I am planning to haul this to the dump but a friend asked me to please see if anyone wanted it as there are many in need. So I have left it out just in case and if it is still there tomorrow we will haul it to the dump. THANK YOU!!!

    Richwseattle:

They will have a wireless option which sounds superior as well and it will cover the entire city. I will drop Century Link ADSL in a heartbeat if this actually rolls out…and I will be peeved if it doesn’t.

If you compost, they will come. :-)

Seriously, unless you’re composting inside in a bucket, worms will find a compost pile. Even a compost bin if it has air holes anywhere near the bottom.

Shed, your story had me smiling as we had a similar one 3 years ago. Hearing scratching noises at night, me convinced they were going to fall through the ceiling onto my innocent slumbering self. So freaked out I wouldn’t sleep upstairs, instead spending a few uncomfortable nights on the couch.

Turned out our visitors were bats. We’ve thankfully moved the bat family on and sealed up where they were getting in which was a very small opening between siding and the bricks of our chimney.

I understand not wanting “real” cigarrettes too close to the building we’ve all heard the secon hand smoke debate and dangers …. but to ban electronic cigarrettes that are perfectly safe and unobtrusive to other customers??? That’s out and out biasis… nicotine may not be healthy for it’s users but as long as they are electronically smoking and not effecting anyone else’s air space it’s their business! Nicotine is addictive sorta like ummmm CAFFINE… but it doesn’t cause cancer any more than caffine does! it’s the by products of regular cigarrettes that have the cancer causing agents. If we are going to ban people that use unhealthy products then lets start with caffine and ban regular caffinated coffee sales!!! Oh, and let’s not forget those that are carrying a few unhealthy extra pounds and the guy or gal nursing a hangover with a shot of caffine the next morning, alcohol is also unhealthy and addictive. Oh and those using caffine to stay awake… not getting enough sleep in also unhealthy… so now starbucks is a perfectly healthy business, with no smokers electronic or otherwise, no overweight or over tired customers, and best of all no caffine addicted customers……bye bye starbucks!

I have a similar story. Sort of.

Shortly after buying my home, I thought I had rats in the attic. Could hear them scratching and shuffling above my bed at night and in the early morning. Similar hours to yours.

I hired an exterminator after I couldn’t take it any longer. Upon arriving, the exterminator handed me an informational on Wild Asian Jungle Roof Rats with a long story of their arrival and settling in to the Puget Sound territory.

The guy checked out both attic and crawlspace. He claimed there was evidence of rats, but primarily in the crawlspace. Nothing much up in the attic, despite my original concerns. He set up baits and traps in both areas, had me sign a 1 year contract, and left.

Night after night, the scratching continued and was getting increasingly louder. I was convinced an attic full of Wild Asian Jungle Roof Rats were trying to eat their way through my ceiling. I stopped sleeping in the bedroom out of fear that they would one night break through the wall and scramble on me while I slept.

Upon my urging, the exterminator came back. He checked out the spot above my bed, but there was nothing in the trap. He claimed he saw little footprints in the insulation and theorized that the rat was actually trapped in the wall and would soon die. He set more traps to appease me and left.

By this time, it had been three weeks. I imagined a whole family of rats trapped in the wall, scratching and eating, eating and scratching their way through the wall and onto my face.

A friend thought the rat hypothesis wasn’t holding up and asked, “Are you sure it isn’t bees?”. I wasn’t sure. Hadn’t actually thought about it and it certainly wasn’t brought up by the exterminator. That day, right before dusk, I checked out the exterior. Sure enough, wasps (not bees) were streaming in and out of the eaves above my bedroom.

The exterminator came back and eliminated the wasp nest that had made it’s way to the space above my bed.

So, while it may be squirrels or raccoon or Wild Asian Jungle Roof Rats, it may also be bees or wasps.

Examine the exterior around dawn or dusk. This is the time they leave or return to the hive in high numbers, therefore easier to spot.

    Good luck.

I was called to rescue this cat and I rescued it, as anonyme said: sick and homeless and going blind is no way to live.

While I appreciate people’s willingness to donate, no matter what I do not have the capability to adopt out.

Most “rescues” are full and this old cat has to compete with/against cute little kittens right now.

As for SAS, listen right now they are full of young HEALTHY adults and kittens Yes they do provide medical care, but what if this cat is in kidney failure again who is going to adopt that?

There is nothing wrong with this cat going to SAS. Even if it humanely put to sleep it is NO longer out there at risk of getting killed by a car.

I am not a “no kill”. I rescue and I do what I can for the animal that I am rescuing. Even if I have to take it to any of the shelters. I hope everyone can respect and understand this.
