First Seattle World Cup match Monday: What to know about getting around

After years of planning and anticipation, tomorrow’s the big day – Seattle’s first FIFA World Cup match, Belgium vs. Egypt at noon, with five more matches to follow here over the next three weeks. Whether you’re going to the game or just going to, or near, SODO and/or downtown, the map above shows some key things you need to know – particularly the area that’ll be closed off to motor-vehicle traffic. Some buses will be rerouted as a result – including West Seattle’s Route 21; go here to get reroute details. You can also read more about the pedestrian zone on this SDOT page, which says the street closures should start about four hours before the matches and end

The West Seattle Water Taxi‘s schedule will be affected too – a round trip will be added on World Cup match days during what otherwise is a two-hour gap in the WSWT schedule – a 10 am departure from downtown’s Pier 50 to Seacrest, and a 10:15 am departure from West Seattle.

We’ll be watching traffic/transportation closely through the day, with updates as (if) events warrant! If you see something your neighbors should know about, on the roads/path/water (or at the stadium!), we’re at 206-293-6302, text or voice, any time.

UPDATE: Crash at 35th/Fauntleroy

2:55 PM: Thanks for the tips (and thanks to Bill for the photo): That collision is blocking the heart of the 35th/Fauntleroy intersection at the southwest end of the West Seattle Bridge. Checking on injuries. Looking at the live camera, westbound traffic on Fauntleroy appears to be getting by, but not northbound traffic on 35th.

3:18 PM: One lane is now moving northbound on 35th, and one of the cars has been removed, while cleanup continues around the other one.

3:34 PM: The second car has been towed.

7:18 PM: SFD tells us two people were treated but neither had to go to the hospital – a 75-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman.

UPDATE: Bus trouble blocks 35th/Trenton for hours

5:46 PM: The photo was sent by Stephanie, who reports that bus hit a pole at 35th/Trenton and that traffic was backing up as a result. That’s the spot where buses are using Trenton as a temporary route because of the repaving project on SW Barton, and it’s a tight turn at best.

6 PM: Thanks to Michelle for the closer look.

7:13 PM: Went by a short time ago – the bus is fully blocking SW Trenton just east of 35th.

8 PM: The tow truck arrived; Michelle sent another photo:

WEEKEND TRAFFIC ALERT: Northbound I-5 closing north of West Seattle Bridge

I-5 has seen a lot of closures in recent months, but the one starting tonight is the biggest in a while – and will be the last until after the FIFA World Cup Seattle matches. WSDOT is closing northbound I-5 from I-90 to the U-District all weekend so it can temporarily dismantle the Ship Canal Bridge-area work zone. The closure starts late tonight and will end by early Monday morning; here are the details.WSDOT says the express lanes will be northbound-only all weekend. After the work zone is removed, all lanes will be open until July 10; then WSDOT will close NB I-5 for another full weekend to create a new work zone.

SIDE NOTE: We’ve previously mentioned the citywide pause on right-of-way work for the World Cup, but it doesn’t involve all streets – here’s the city map of which ones will be work-free zones Monday (June 8) through July 7.

ROAD WORK ALERT: Second Lowman Beach-area project starts this week

In addition to the pump-station work already under way on the south side of Lowman Beach Park, the King County Wastewater Treatment Division has another project starting this week: Sewer-pipe repairs that will start in the park and continue about a quarter of a mile north on the southbound side of Beach Drive SW. KCWTD says the work has to be done this time of year “when flows are lower and conditions are safer.” They’ll be working weekdays, 7 am to 7 pm, and while they don’t expect any interruptions in wastewater service, there’ll be some sidewalk closures and some alternating-lane traffic at times. The work is expected to continue into fall; once it’s done, road and park restoration will be done.
