WEEK AHEAD: Admiral Way Bridge traffic switch, crosswalk removal

(Reader photo from Mark after crosswalk’s installation in August)

Crews on the Admiral Way Bridge seismic-strengthening project will take Christmas week off. But first, they’re planning to switch the traffic flow again this week, on Thursday, at which time SDOT says the temporary crosswalk at 39th SW will be removed:

We’ll be transitioning into our third phase of traffic control on December 19. The two center lanes on Admiral Way SW will be closed during this phase, with one lane in each direction open for people driving. As part of this transition, the temporary crosswalk at Admiral Way SW and 39th Ave SW will be removed.

They’re also projecting that construction might last into the summer, spokesperson Matthew Howard tells WSB. (The projection was spring when the work began back in July.) The current phase of work involves “continuing to drill and epoxy in anchor dowels and … beginning to repair cracks on the piers.” Also ahead, “removing paint from the bridge’s steel truss members and … retrofitting this component with gusset plates in the coming weeks.” After the Christmas-week pause, work will resume December 30th. Fairmount Avenue beneath the bridge, meantime, will remain closed until the end of construction.

UPDATE: ‘Rescue extrication’ response on West Marginal Way SW

6:23 PM: Seattle Fire has sent a “rescue extrication” response to the 4800 block of West Marginal Way. We don’t know if it’s related to the earlier report of a crash – the address checks to the same area. Rescuers arriving in the area are saying “all the occupants appear to be OK.” Updates to come.

6:25 PM: SFD now says no one needs to be extricated, so they’re downsizing. the response – but West Marginal Way SW is blocked both ways because of the response, so avoid the area.

6:43 PM: Officers told dispatch that southbound traffic is flowing again.

|    Comments Off on UPDATE: About the emergency response at Admiral/Stevens
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

11:50 PM: For those asking about the police/fire response at Admiral/Stevens – it was dispatched as a man in his 30s either jumping or falling out of a moving car. He’s been taken to the hospital. We’re checking with SFD on his condition when transported.

ADDED MONDAY MORNING: SFD says the man was in stable condition.

UPDATE: Crash on westbound West Seattle Bridge’s Delridge exit

1:17 PM: Thanks for the tips. Traffic is backing up on the westbound West Seattle Bridge because of a crash and emergency response near the Delridge exit. If you have to head that way, be patient – or wait a while.

1:20 PM: One texter says the backup is primarily on the exit ramp itself.

1:39 PM: Thanks to commenter Agen for posting the photo bearing that out. SFD has now cleared, to underscore Agen’s report of no apparent senior injuries.

UPDATE: 35th/Morgan crash

5:21 PM: Thanks for the tip. Northbound 35th is blocked north of Morgan because of a crash. Apparently no major injuries; one SFD engine was dispatched but already has been dismissed.

5:40 PM: Tow truck’s now on scene.

5:59 PM: Officers just told dispatch the street’s open all ways. We’re checking with SFD re: if anyone was hurt.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Delridge Way shifts as pedestrian-bridge project moves to final phase

(WSB photo: Delridge project site, earlier this week)

As we’ve been mentioning in our daily traffic updates, we’ve had an inquiry out to SDOT about the status of the Delridge Way pedestrian-bridge seismic-strengthening project. We just received the update, and it includes word of a configuration change at the project site:

The Delridge Pedestrian Bridge is expected to reopen in early 2025. Crews will be wrapping up retrofits to the bridge’s components throughout December. Over the last year, we have made the bridge stronger by widening its foundation, adding carbon fiber wrapping, making structural reinforcements, rebuilding the ramp landings, and replacing the expansion joints.

If all goes well and the weather allows us to complete our work on schedule, we expect to be able to temporarily reopen the bridge to pedestrians in January 2025. There will still need to be short closures later in the year lasting a few days at a time to install the bridge railings.

Today (December 6), we will be shifting the travel lanes on Delridge Way SW to make room for the next phase of construction. There will continue to be two open lanes, with one lane for each direction of travel. We expect to fully reopen the road in early 2025.

Work on the project started last spring, after the city determined it would keep and strengthen the overpass rather than tearing it down.
