BIZNOTE: Future Primitive Brewing to open Alki Beach outpost

Several people have asked about work under way at 2536 Alki SW, the site vacated by West Seattle Brewing at the end of last summer, when a redevelopment project was expected to start soon for the site holding this small building and the home of Ampersand Coffee next door. That hasn’t happened; Ampersand has stayed in its location, and now another brewery is preparing to open an outpost next to it: White Center’s Future Primitive Brewing. After noticing via state records that they had applied for a beer/wine license for the Alki space, we inquired both there and at their WC location, and got confirmation that Future Primitive is opening at the beach. After some renovation work, they’re hoping to be open sometime in June, and once they open, we’re told, hours will be 11 am to 9 pm, seven days a week. Future Primitive opened its headquarters in White Center more than four years ago. As for whatever happened to the project on the Alki site, described previously as a renovation of the two commercial spaces with a residential addition above them, we have an inquiry out; city files show no new documents filed for more than a year.

CONGRATULATIONS! Five athletes from West Seattle’s Rain City Ropeworks on U.S. national jump-rope team

Five local jump-rope athletes from West Seattle-based Rain City Ropeworks are headed to the world championships! Here’s the announcement we received today:

The American Jump Rope Federation announced the US National Team for 2023. Among the team representing the US (with more than 30 other countries from around the world) are five local teenagers from the Rain City Ropeworks team: Calla Freeman, Madeleine Garrison, Riley Hill, Halle Morgan, and Ava Wheatley. The girls will be competing in two Team Double Dutch categories. Riley and Madeline will also be competing in the Individual Freestyle category.

The event will have 3,000 participants and will mark the first time the event will be held in Colorado Springs, CO. The event will be a combination of the World Championships, as well as the International Open Tournament and the Junior World Championships, held July 16-23, 2023.

Rain City Ropeworks is led by Rene Bibaud, a 5-time world rope-jumping champion and Cirque du Soleil performer. Rene believes everyone should have access to the joy of jumping rope. “A jump rope is portable, inexpensive, and can be done virtually anywhere – making it an incredibly equitable and fun activity!” said Rene.

Rene’s goal is to share her passion for jumping rope with the community through her after-school programs, summer camps, workshops & classes and the Rain City Ropeworks jump rope team. The team is a performance and competition team based in West Seattle. Team members range from 8-18 and perform at special events, halftime shows, festivals, school assemblies, and compete in local, regional, national, and international tournaments. Rain City Ropeworks will be performing at this year’s 50th anniversary Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival.

Another local event in which RCR is participating – this Saturday, they’re having a fundraising sale as part of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, as noted in our benefit/fundraiser sale list – on the WSCGSD map, they’re Sale #251. (Demonstrations promised, too!)

Here’s when West Seattle wading pools (including Hiawatha!), Colman Pool, Highland Park Spraypark will open this year

(Colman Pool, photographed in 2017 by Long Bach Nguyen)

For everyone wondering when the city will open its outdoor aquatic facilities this year – the answer is just in from Seattle Parks and Rec. We’ve pulled out the West Seattle/South Park-specific info:

HIGHLAND PARK SPRAYPARK: Opening May 27th and open every day of the week, 11 am-8 pm, through Labor Day.

COLMAN POOL: West Seattle’s only city-run outdoor pool will start daily operations June 24th and continue through Labor Day. See the schedule details here. No mention of “preseason” weekends, so we’re doublechecking on that. (Note that it will be closed to the general public July 6 through 8 and July 14 and 15 for swim meets.)

WADING POOLS: Here’s the plan for West Seattle/South Park – and yes, Hiawatha WILL be open, the city says:

Delridge – 6/28-8/18, Wed/Thurs/Fri, 12-5:30 pm

EC Hughes – 6/26-8/20, Mon/Tue/Sun, 12-7 pm

Hiawatha – 6/29-8/19, Thurs/Fri/Sat, 12-6:30 pm

Lincoln Park – 6/24-9/4, daily, 12-7 pm

South Park – 6/26-8/16, Mon/Tue/Wed, 12-7 pm

As always, the city reminds you, wading pools “are open on sunny days when the temperature is forecast to be 70 degrees or above.” You can call 206-684-7796 during the season for a recording updated daily regarding what’s open and what isn’t.

P.S. The city still has lots of job opportunities, for lifeguards, for example – info here.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Blue convertible stolen

Was taken between 7:30-9 AM off 20th and Roxbury. My contact info is 425-221-3092.

We’ll add the police-report # when we get it.

WHALES: Orcas off Alki

11:34 AM: Transient killer whales are back in Elliott Bay right now, reports Kersti Muul. They’re in view off the promenade – we were just briefly in the area and while we didn’t see the whales, we did see the boats watching them.

5:31 PM: Thanks to Robin Sinner for the photos! Robin says, “Orca Network identified male orca T87, Harbeson, born 1962. Oldest known male Biggs transient orca.”

TRANSIT: Metro plans to officially suspend Admiral’s Route 55 starting this fall

“We’re in the enviable position where people want more transit. But – we’re unable to give it to them.”

So said Metro‘s general manager Michelle Allison toward the end of a just-concluded media briefing with early warning of route suspensions planned for the next twice-yearly “service change,” on September 2nd.

One West Seattle route is on the list – Route 55, which is scheduled for only six trips a day now, five in the morning, one in the afternoon (its schedule was officially reduced last September). “Scheduled” is the key word here – as riders know, Metro has been frequently canceling trips. Allison said the point of suspending more routes – 32 of the current 156 system-wide – is to improve reliability so that by the time they get to September, “the schedule IS the service,” not just an aspirational plan.

Here’s the full list of what they’re planning now for a September 2nd change. And needless to say, currently suspended routes aren’t in the plan for restoration – that would include long-suspended West Seattle Route 37. We asked how they can be certain that this round of suspensions will put them on the road to reliability. Allison, who took over as Metro GM earlier this year, said they believe they’ve done enough analysis and “daylighting” of personnel and supply-chain reality, that they have an accurate picture of what they can reliably deliver. She added that what’s on the schedule starting September 2nd is roughly equal to what, with ongoing trip cancellations, they’re actually delivering now.

Again, the changes announced today – and other forthcoming adjustments – won’t officially be part of the schedule as of September 2nd – so until then, Route 55 is still, technically, operational.
