The time/place for the meeting also has been posted in the comment thread – I did not have permission from neighbors to share it initially but am checking to be sure it’s OK to include in a followup I expect to post by tonight. There really is no “campaigning” to be done – it’s a house whose owner put it up for rent, and said owner rented it to Sound Mental Health – but as I wrote, that agency plans to decide what to do with the house AFTER the meeting with neighbors Thursday night.

After reading the recommendations on the Shelf Talk blog (https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=9339), I thought it would be fun to get some more recommendations from WSB readers (I know lots of us read more than blogs!)

So, to start the ball rolling, here’s what I recommend of my summer reading so far, in no particular order:

–Dreamers of the Day, by Mary Doria Russell

–A Suitable Boy, by Vikram Seth

Just my kind of summer read: like a very long vacation to an exotic place. It reminds me very much of War & Peace, in that the personal stories of the characters and families are interwoven with the political and historical background of post-partition India, with a dash of Romeo and Juliet thrown in.

–Snake Oil Science: The Truth about Complementary and Alternative Medicine, by R. Barker Russell

This book is an outstanding primer on how to interpret all those conflicting results of medical trials, not only for alternative but also for mainstream medicine. Although the author allows himself the occasional snarky comment, he demonstrates great sympathy for people struggling to evaluate conflicting advice in their search for solutions to chronic conditions, notably pain. He explains why alternative therapies do indeed work, although not usually in the way their adherents believe. We need all adults to understand what constitutes good and bad science research. I think we’d be better off if all doctors, patients, and lawmakers read this book.

–The Summer Book, by Tove Jansson, of Moomintroll fame.

Another summer vacation between the covers of a book, this time a semi-autobiographical evocation of an island summer through the eyes of a child and her grandmother.

–Lavinia, by Ursula K. LeGuin

If escaping to an exotic location isn’t vacation enough, how about another time? LeGuin’s latest retells the story of the end of Virgil’s Aeneid, but from the point of view of Lavinia, the king’s daughter won by Aeneas, whom Virgil only gives a one-line description. LeGuin’s usual beautiful, elegant writing.

Those were the best, so far this summer. They’re all available at the library.

If you’re a patron of Southwest Library, do come and meet the new manager and assistant manager at the Southwest Friends’ informal reception tonight between 6:30 and 7:45 in the upstairs meeting room at the branch. Light refreshments!

(Another one was held earlier this month; it conflicted with four community meetings the same night in WS, so we didn’t make it over to Beacon Hill, but the information is somewhat timeless.)

Even more than Lincoln Park, we have heard from nearby residents that Fauntleroy Park (which is less developed than L-Park) is particularly coyote-laden these days.

I should have posted this earlier but didnt think about it. The house in the blog post https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=9066 is giving away all their boulders/plants to anyone who wants them. There is a sign behind the house with a phone number to call if anyone is interested in carting away any of it. I would rather see it go to someone who wants it then wherever it would end up otherwise. I dont own the property, I just live close by. If anyone cant find the phone number to call and does want something I’ll post the number here when I next walk past the sign.

In case you missed previous mentions, or just found this site, or some other reason — SATURDAY!!!! is the first “Movies on the Wall” presentation in the courtyard next to Hotwire. “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is the kickoff movie – rained out a couple times at the end of last summer, believe it or not – and the weather looks perfect. All ages welcome, movie starts around dusk but the courtyard’s open earlier, bring a nonperishable food donation for the West Seattle Food Bank, which is also the beneficiary of the concession sales that are offered by folks from West Seattle Christian Church (which like Hotwire is a WSB sponsor, and WSB in turn is one of the sponsors of this year’s movie series). The night before Summer Fest is a lovely night to visit The Junction each year … strolling right down the middle of the street provides a different perspective on this area that’s at the heart of our community. We saw not only the happy folks enjoying Bubbleman, the busy folks putting up booths, but also more than a few of the people we work with, cover, and write about frequently – the business owners, organization leaders, and concerned citizens who all spend a lot of time working to help make sure West Seattle rocks. Two points of interest, seeing where this discussion has meandered over the past hours.

1. Delridge development is booming (one of these days I’m going to put together a feature on it with a map like the one we made for Junction/Triangle development – there are almost as many projects) and it hasn’t drawn nearly as many complaints as development in the western half of WS, so the revelation that the OP was targeted with a sign of protest is certainly an unusual case. If you haven’t driven down Delridge itself lately, give it a spin; many projects under way, including rundown apartment buildings marked for teardown toward the south end (around Thistle).

2. For all the meetings, forums, etc., we’ve covered in just our past couple years of a WS-only focus — both West Seattle-specific meetings and city-level meetings affecting WS as well as other parts of the city — there is no question that the city is proceeding with a pro-density policy, and that is likely to intensify given the expectation that $4-plus gas will bring more people back to in-city living (during my days of working downtown, it seemed all my co-workers were buying homes in places like Sumner and North Bend … I suspect that trend has slowed).

So if you truly believe that density is the wrong direction, or that it should be limited to certain areas of the city as at least one post above suggests, you are really going to want to let your elected leaders know. (Same of course if you support it.) Mayor, council contacts are all on the city website at

Sally Clark is in charge of the committee that oversees planning, land use, and neighborhoods. During her Junction walking tour two months ago, covered here,

she acknowledged, “We’re not good at telling developers ‘no’.”

Meantime, what I’d call an car-discouraging policy also is part of the pro-density policy; as we report in stories about developments, the city continues to reduce the number of parking spaces it requires. Some developers choose to include more than the required number of spaces, so that’s why you don’t see all new developments at the minimum-requirement level.

data points … and the bottom line remains that whatever you support, stay informed and stay involved. This is why we post updates on development-related meetings, large properties for sale, permits that are granted, etc., to try to help facilitate access to information. What you do or don’t do with that information is your choice but there is plenty of information available on what’s going on regarding projects and policies.

P.S. If you ever want to know what is going on with a lot near you, whether it’s marked with a city land-use sign or not, put its address in here – you will get its history as well as whether there are any active proposals:

Almost a year ago, we reported here on WSB about a photo sent by an area resident after a banner mentioning “greed” was hung on a then-unfinished home in Fauntlee Hills. Much discussion ensued, along with coverage elsewhere. Don’t think it was a townhouse but by any chance was this it? The comments included one from someone who identified himself as one of the owners, but his name wasn’t David.
