Actually those notices are going out this week, according to what Rick Sheridan from SDOT told us yesterday (as reported on the main news page:

Based upon what WSB posted (in July) about the Spokane Viaduct work to start in August, pending updates currently:

…”Consultants who attended last night’s SWDC meeting on behalf of the city said some of the first work you’ll see will be in August, when a water main will be replaced on a section of lower Spokane Street; the first longterm closure is scheduled to be eastbound Spokane, for about a year and a half starting in fall.”

Detour will be

Eastbound traffic, north via East Marginal Way to Hanford, then to 1st Ave. S to Lander to cross the tracks.

This means traffic will be HEAVY from Spokane to Lander, the major bike cross getting from West Seattle to the northbound bike lane on the east side of Alaskan. Those heading north from south of Spokane St will likely encounter much heavier traffic.

Bag-fee battle: Sierra Club collecting “stories”

from the home page. Sometimes i think we forget to read here. Two interesting things:

1) That they have enough signatures after two weeks!! Yeah!! :)

2) It sounds like they are tyring to say that the signatures are invalid b/c the siganture gathers were misrepresenting the facts by saying that the signature on the paper was to vote on the bag tax when in fact the bag tax had already been voted on (by the city council) Interesting argument.. not sure i by it.

However, the site probably will be redeveloped at some point, per our report at the time. Not likely any time in the near future given that the property owner approved the project that finally enabled the Charlestown (I’m amending the thread title for searchers’ benefit) to reopen.

Petco, meantime, supposedly has renewed its lease in The Junction for a couple years. I’ve been trying to get a hold of Petco PR to confirm this so I can post about it.

I have to say I believe they miss a vital point, simply deleting posts and closing threads doesn’t clean up a forum, especially on the internet. Mostly, it just cuts people off or justifies peoples responses when the opposing viewpoint disappears.

This isn’t fark or slashdot or even slog, but the *voice* of the WSB is increasingly the voice of people who have time to camp out and post during all hours of the day, and it is beginning to take on the dreaded groupthink that has a tendency to kill forum traffic.

People frequently post subjects and replies that are a result of the core demographic of the readership, which occasionally are mildly offensive ( anything about prowlers, sexual orientation or politics are very polarized ) factually incorrect, or willfully without research.

I post to WSB because I live here, and I realize that most of you do as well, despite the novice experiences of the group with web forums its at times informative, interesting, and infuriating. I have many friends and neighbors who would never post here, who post on other communities online, because of the content of responses on WSB.

My only suggestions would be to look at online forums that are successful ( egullet comes to mind, with its membership for posting requiring an essay of interest. ) Group moderation by shared admins with opposing viewpoints. ( for every JanS you get a House to veto ) or consider rather than deleting threads or posts that often veer wildly off topic, with clear locks or edits from the moderator on *why* a particular entry is inappropriate.

I understand forums are a hassle to admin, I have refused creating them for many clients and friends. I prefer mailing lists for this reason ( the barrier of entry keeps the novices at bay) but your exposed to the big bad internet and between your current signal to noise ratio, and the current trend of controversial posts to degrade into flames and trolling, I think WSB forums are headed into a direction you didn’t expect, or wanted to avoid. A brief look at who posts to front page blog posts vs the limited number of forum users should be proof enough of how many are reading the blog and commenting, but avoiding the forums all together.

There are so many cats wandering around, that it seems difficult to believe someone just goes around picking them up, unless they are potentially pricey purebreds, and while Auggie is certainly gorgeous – you can see a pic by scrolling down the lost/found pets section

Carving out a niche: Sculpted at streetside

Do you remember seeing this on WSB front page a few months ago? Jon’s neighbors copied the thread and sent it to every offical in the city they could think of. Apparantly, Jon was forced to erect a small fence. You must drive by and see his idea of a fence. No posts, just a couple of premade Home Depot sections slapped up to do the minimum (I imagine the first good windstorm will take it down). It seems the city is unable to address these kinds of issues. Very disappointing.

IMHO, the small claims court idea sounds like your best bet!

Meantime, anyone contemplating any kind of move anywhere at any time would be strongly urged to read absolutely every shred of available background on the property, whether you are selling or renting. If you’re thinking about renting an apartment complex, always worth checking to make sure it’s not up for sale. Not all commercial/multifamily properties get publicly listed, I’ve learned, but I keep an eye on this site and report WS complexes up for sale – ones with more than a few units, anyway – when they are posted, because of having heard so many times about tenants being the last to know (in this search engine, choose multifamily in the top group and West Seattle in market area):

I was wondering what others thought of Bella Mente, the West Seattle YMCA, and All About Kids. Would you recommend another?

We have one daughter in Kids Centre currently (great place) but we want to find something closer to home as my wife and I no longer work downtown. We have two daughters, 2 1/2 and 4 months, and are looking for daycare starting in September. We prefer centers as we want a good caregiver to child ratio in a nurturing and social environment. I am in flowerpetal’s court. In particular, even more than the airshow itself, the takeoffs and landings from the Museum of Flight/Boeing Field are amazing to watch. On the Thursday practice day, they don’t do the “walkdown,” but for the Friday-Sunday performances, they do, and that is worth staking out a spot on the fence at the south side of M-of-F to see
