MissKMemberGrrr! I love living in West Seattle but gosh where is there affordable quality rentals? I lived in the Junction and loved it but then moved to the Delridge area because it was cheaper. BIG MISTAKE!! I want to move back to the Junction. Anyone know of any places max $875 a month?
July 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm #631602
MissKMemberHmmm? No one knows of anything that is nice and affordable in The Junction? I’ve been scanning Craigslist like no tomorrow.

JoBParticipantare you looking for an apartment?
there is a small complex on california just south of that waters edge complex (just before you seriously go up the hill) that would intrigue me if i didn’t have dogs… it is well maintained and i think reasonable…
i haven’t seen reasonable appts on craig’s list..
but the fish and chips place on the dock by the water taxi has had a seattle rental flier in the entry and i have seen affordable rentals listed on it.
good luck.
BTW.. why not delridge?

MissKMemberThanks JoB!
I will check that out tonight after work. CL is upsetting right now. The prices are unreal for some of the rentals out there. Are they smoking the wacky tabacky when posting their ads? :-)
I want to move from Delridge because I just can’t go and take a simple walk around the neighborhood. Its a busy street and if you need to go to the grocery store or restaurants you have to get in your car for that. The Junction is more walker friendly.

cruiserMember“It’s a busy street and if you need to go to the grocery store or restaurants you have to get in your car for that. The Junction is more walker friendly.”…………….and that’s why the rent is higher:)
Sorry, but will keep an eye out for ya!
July 17, 2008 at 6:38 pm #631606
MissKMemberThanks Cruiser! I realize why the rent is higher but it should be comprable to the units. If my landlords didn’t decide to sell I would still be up there.
July 17, 2008 at 7:04 pm #631607
MichellMemberThere is a house near mine (on Alaska, West of the junction by a couple blocks). I’ll see if I can get the number off the sign.
July 17, 2008 at 7:09 pm #631608
SueParticipantHere’s are some off Craigslist near the Junction, at or below your price range:

mellaw6565MemberMy point exactly on the “good neighbors” thread. Developers come in with these townhomes and don’t provide affordable apartment living for others. And yet the City also insists on making MIL’s & DADU’s illegal – which would be a great option for people like MissK. What a sad situation this has become.
July 17, 2008 at 8:06 pm #631610
MissKMemberDon’t even get me started on the townhome invasion. LOL That makes my blood boil. If they would invest more money in Delridge perhaps putting a shopping center in the middle. I have a car but some that live down there don’t. I can’t imagine how they do their shopping via the bus. I also think charging over $800 for something 400 sq ft is robbery too. I will check out some of the suggestions above.
Thanks!!

acemotelParticipantmellaw6565, where do you get the idea that the city is outlawing ADUs? The rulings were relaxed in 2006, and the trend is to approve rather than forbid these units. What is your source?
July 18, 2008 at 12:06 am #631612
beachdrivegirlParticipantOut of curioisty, what is an ADU? or DADU?
July 18, 2008 at 12:16 am #631613
acemotelParticipantaccessory dwelling units and detached accessory dwelling units.
July 18, 2008 at 12:18 am #631614
MissKMemberbeachdrivegirl I was wondering the same thing. All I can think of is Additional Dwelling Unit? If anyone can get the number on Fauntleroy and Dawson. I would sooo appreciate it :-) I drove past this afternoon but of course had no pen. Grrr
July 18, 2008 at 2:51 am #631615
SueParticipantMissK, the sign on Fauntleroy/Dawson is 206-992-3910 (if you’re referring to the one on the northwest corner). I can vouch for nice neighbors (she says while reading the sign from her livingroom window ;) I know it’s a duplex, but don’t know anything else about it. If that’s not it and there’s another sign on a different corner, let me know and I’ll go outside and get the number.
July 18, 2008 at 2:57 am #631616
MissKMemberOh thank you thank you thank you Sue….Now to call and get the price. That might be the stopping point? Cross your fingers.
July 18, 2008 at 3:03 am #631617
MissKMemberDarn! Just called and it sounds like a sweet place and a nice older gentleman who answered the phone. The duplex is 2 br has everything but also has a high rent (at least for me) $1300 a month. Doh!! I’ll keep searching :-)
July 18, 2008 at 4:22 am #631618
mellaw6565MemberAce – I didn’t say ADU’s – I said MIL’s and DADU’s. And I got my information from the City’s DPD department and the statutes online.
July 18, 2008 at 4:24 am #631619
SueParticipantSorry that didn’t work out, MissK. I can see what looks like it might be a for rent sign diagonally across the street on the southeast corner – those look like apartments (like an old motel or something). I’ll try and remember to get the # when I cross for the bus in the morning (if it *is* a for rent sign).

inactiveMemberMellaw6565 and acemotel –
Well, since you guys hi-jacked the thread a bit…
would you mind explaining the differences between the MIL’s, DADU’s and ADU’s for me. I am curious which specific statutes apply and how they are commonly and/or currently interpreted.
Thanks in advance.
July 18, 2008 at 5:17 am #631621
PDieterParticipantI’m not sure what the differences between a MIL and an ADU or DADU might be outside of a MIL being an “illegal/unpermitted” adu or dadu.
ADU= Accessory Dwelling unit…a separate apartment in a single family home
DADU= Detached ADU (separate building from single family home.
The city is actually encouraging ADU’s these days. We are just finishing a remodel on our home and it includes a permitted ADU in the walk-out basement. (near Holy Rosary) Should be ready in August, and we still have to figure out the rent but should be near MissK’s budget and includes utilities.
July 18, 2008 at 6:09 am #631622
JanSParticipantthat’s terrific…hope you two get together. :)
July 18, 2008 at 7:45 am #631623
acemotelParticipantSorry, I did not mean to hijack the thread, and maybe we should start another one just on this subject. DADU, as PDieter mentioned, is just a dwelling unit that is not attached to the primary building; like a detached garage is not connected to the house. In 2006, the city approved DADUs in single-family zones in southeast Seattle (except shorelines), subject to certain restrictions and requirements just like any other permitted uses. I have not heard of a move to restrict this use and actually, as a lay observer, expect the city to expand the area of permitted DADUs. The city these days seems to advocate for anything to increase urban density ……. MIL is just another name for DADUs. ADUs are accessory dwelling units like oh, a basement apartment in a SF house. ADUs have been permitted citywide since about 1995 (again, subject to certain conditions and requirements). See this DPD info sheet for ADU: http://www.seattle.gov/dpd/publications/cam/cam116a.pdf back to the regularly scheduled programming…………

MissKMemberI just want to find a nice, updated or at least in good condition, fairly priced place to move to. The places I have come across are either the size of a shoebox, not been taken care of, or waaay too expensive. ((Sigh)) I really do appreciate all of the posters who have given me leads on places :-)
July 18, 2008 at 3:36 pm #631625
SueParticipantMissK, there is a “for lease” sign diagonally across the street from the house on Dawson/Fauntleroy that you called about. The number on that says 206-938-5200 and mentions Washington Management Real Estate Sales and Services. This is the entry for that property that I found on their site. No mention of prices. http://www.washingtonmanagementcompany.com/sharon_lynn.php
