NewRes- polls have been as much as 20% off the day of the election many times during this cycle. Using the respected polls and there margin of errors you can find about a 15% point gap at any given time for any given contest.
Now, at this time, the polls you are talking about are at this time a hypothetical matchup that will happen 5 months from today. So, while they might be indicators, there should in no way be a deciding tool.
For example, every single poll 5 months prior to Iowa had Hillary Clinton versus Rudy Giuliani in the general election. They turned out to be wrong. Every single poll had Bill Clinton a distant 3rd place in 1996 when he won the nomination behind Bush and Perot.
It’s a cynical argument, and truly one made out of desperation. If the Clintons had won the election they would not be arguing mythic popular vote metrics, or “swing state” general election polls.
It is important that the nominee win in the fall. And right now, polls today show Obama with a slight edge over McCain. This is inspite of close to 1/3 of Hillary supporters saying they won’ support him. The real key to Obamas victory is going to be his continued strength in new swing states like Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Washington State, Oregon- all of which he is considerably outperforming Hillary in right now, and all of which are crucial in November.

gambaruParticipantNCES Releases Condition of Education 2008 Report
Last Thursday, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) held a briefing on the release of “The Condition of Education 2008.” The congressionally mandated annual report showcases findings on a number of trends, including school enrollments, student performance on national and international assessments, public school expenditures, and the educational attainment of young adults.
Mark Schneider, Commissioner of NCES, presented the report findings. Introducing the report as a “big picture†view of U.S. education data, Schneider said this year’s notable findings include an improvement in math and reading scores, an increase in college enrollment, and persistent challenges that remain for minority populations. Public school enrollment continues to grow (expected to approach 50 million this year) and set new records, while private school enrollment has declined since 2001. Hispanic students now represent 20 percent of public school enrollment and the percentage of children who speak a language other than English at home has doubled (to 20 percent). Average test scores in 2007 for 9- and 13-year-olds in reading and mathematics show an upward trend. Notably, 4th graders in the United States are outperforming their international peers, on average, in terms of literacy. For the 2004–05 school year, the estimated on time graduation rate in the United States was 75 percent. The rate of students enrolling in college immediately after high school was 67 percent in 1997 (up from 49 percent in 1972), but has since fluctuated between 62 and 69 percent.

It takes the whole slime factor out of buying a new car – the prices is great and you just walk in an get the keys. You do have to go to the ‘managers’ office for the standard security systems/fabric protection sales push, but if you bring a two year old with you, it doesn’t last long!

KenParticipantYou may want to print this out if you meet a cop who does not want to do the paperwork. They may not be required but you can ask that they forward the info/call to an animal control officer.
There are only 4 enforcement officers for the entire city.
http://www.cityofseattle.net/animalshelter/strategy.htm
The following are some general guidelines to be used by both the Neighborhood Team and the Park Patrol Team to ensure that enforcement activities are conducted in a manner that is fair and equitable to all citizens.
A Citation shall be issued for violations including leash law, scoop law and pet licensing. A citation shall also be issued for other related animal-related violations when a pet owner:
Has previously been issued a warning, citation or parks exclusion notice for an animal-related violation.
Gives false information to the officer.
Allows the animal to
Bite or behave dangerously, aggressively or in a menacing fashion.
Behave unruly; jump up on people.
Chase fish/wildlife; enter or destroy fish/wildlife habitat.
Destroy public and/or private property.
Be off-leash in or near a playground, wading pool, beach, athletic field or any park area where there is a concentration of children, or on or near a trail or any park area where people are walking, running, picnicking or engaging in other recreational activities where an off-leash dog would be considered by a reasonable person to be disruptive.
A Park Exclusion Notice shall be issued in addition to a citation when the violator:
Has received 3 or more animal-related citations in the parks within a twelve (12) month period.
Has previously received a citation for dangerous animal behavior surrounding an incident that occurred in a City park.
Is uncooperative or belligerent and the Seattle Police Department must be summoned to assist the officer.
Except for violations of leash law, scoop law, licensing laws or other circumstances outlined above, a Warning may be issued, at the discretion of the officer, if the following conditions are met and the violator:
Tried earnestly not to violate the law.
Has not previously received animal code violation warnings, citations or parks exclusion notices for animal-related violations.
Has not allowed the animal to bite or behave dangerously, aggressively or in a menacing fashion.
Is otherwise in compliance of the leash law, scoop law and pet licensing law.
Note: When the police advise you not to confront people, they may have your best interest at heart. But those of us who are not afraid of confrontation or it’s results, should continue to at in a civic minded fashion. Otherwise everyone gets run over since we cannot possible afford enough police to protect a compliant citizenry.

Another odd thing, I don’t remember it (although after turnong 21, I did patronize the Pickwick when it was at Westwood, occasionally) and more surpisingly the old Fire Station. Yet I remember the Ernst Hardware across the street, where Wells Fargo now is, previously known as First Interstate Bank, previously known as Pacific Bank. (Bigfoot’s Bank).

I am a passionate dog-owner AND carry mace on me at all times. You can get cheap mace that fits on your key chain that even has a “saftey” on it at Frys for under $5. I carry it not just to protect MYSELF but to protect my pooch from other dogs. Just in case. I’ve heard of it not working on aggressive dogs but it makes me feel better. It’s nice to have the piece of mind.
As a dog owner, I understand there is a time and place for on and off leash. There are 2 water front dog parks: Sand point and Mercer Island. Otherwise, Westcrest is near by. The fine alone for having my dog off leash on teh water front is enough to deter me (not to mention the saftey risks if my dog were to chase a squirrel…). I think the first offense is like $500!

charlabobParticipantOK, here’s a slightly negative view :-( My friend, who loved I’m My Own Wife, went to Springhill after the play Friday night. They were out of most of what she wanted — her bottom line: everything was artistic, well done, and not nearly enough food. The pear and beat salad was beautiful — but barely enough pares and beets to taste — (they might have been running short.) (They were even out of the peanut ice cream…offered coffee, which seemed too ordinary.) Good stuff – the taste was magnificant and she was a woman alone who felt absolutely comfortable, even without a book on a Friday night!
We tried again tonight and were hit with the odd 5:45 opening. I’m sure that works for folks who eat late on weekdays — we’re not among them. At least we want to sit in a bar and sip wine while we wait for a super table.
I’m glad it’s here and someday I may actually get to eat there.
Meantime, as always, Angelina’s came through!

walfredoMemberJT- I’m sorry I hadn’t seen the question.
I think a central question needs to be asked by the Obama campaign about how fractured the party is.
Is it more important to stick to his core messages that got him to this point, or to pivot a bit and try to reach out to the constituencies that are currently angry either with HRC herself or a close surrogate of hers, or maybe a woman like Sebalius.
I personally believe, that weakening even slightly the core purpose of his campaign, would show compromise no doubt, but a weakness that would be difficult to overcome. So on a deep, fundamental level I think he perfectly matches everything Obama represents, and is a perfect choice. But lets not kid ouselves, I’m voting for Obama anyway, so the question is more on the lines of if its an effective pick.
I believe, Jim Webb puts McCain severely on the defensive at what is supposed to be his issue and will help largely in overall voting. But more importantly I think he carries Virginia. If Obama wins Virginia he is the president, he can lose Ohio, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Iowa all the other swing states in play. Carry what Kerry won, and take Virginia and your the president. I think this ticket will win..

charlabobParticipantThanks, NR — I just added it to the NF queue and moved it up to #4.
We watched an odd combo of films and movies this weekend. I liked all except the “Best Seller” — There Must Be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis *and the sound track* were amazing. The movie was too long and too, um, strange????
The rest: (Recommended by at least one of the charlabobs)
Juno (I didn’t expect to like it — I loved it and actually bought the really silly soundtrack)
The United States of Leland — Another teen angst movie; much bleaker than Juno. Rented it because of Kevin Spacey — loved it for him and everyone else. All villains — none could be written off.
Gone Baby Gone — recommended here by NR and others — again, I was blown away.
Ambivalent — Bob Loved — Charla loved/hated: Sweeney Todd — loved the play (saw it 3 times) — loved Johnny Depp — in this case, less might be more — a little too realistic, the blood and gore.
Next in the queue —
Lars and the Beaautiful Girl — recommended by a friend and starring Ryan Gosling, the star of the United States of Leland

Ellenater sent me this string so i could check out the wonderful reception and great tips you are all giving her on her family’s move.
Ellenater and hub and spawn are three of the most wonderful people in the world. They deserve West Seattle, and they will treat it as a treasure.
I lived in Capitol Hill years ago, but I had a partner for seven years who grew up on California Street and we spent every major holiday in West Seattle, each year. If I could, I would move there in an Oregon minute (which is slower and greener than a New York minute and has fewer taxis). ANYway, I just felt compelled to chime in and reassure you that the ellenaters are superb, and a great fit for WS. Thank you all for making my BFF so welcome. It brought a tear to my eye that my dear ellenater might finally have found “home”.

KenParticipantJust for comparison, Abe Lincolns accomplishments before being elected President.
http://www.nps.gov/history/logcabin/html/al1.html
Does he seem closer to one candidate than the other?
Note: the Republican party was started as the “progressive reform” alternative to the Democrats at the time. They did not become the party of big business until the late 19th century.
Of course the terms progressive and reform had different meaning in those days so while the party was formed from the free soil movement (anti slavery in new states )and the Whigs (Legislative power should trump executive power as long as it is ours )it was conservative pretty much in the meaning that they wanted no slavery because they wanted no Blacks allowed in the western states (which included Ohio in those days). It was progressive in that it fought the consolidation of executive power in the hands of the president. The Whigs, Liberty party and the free soil party all pretty much imploded at the time of the Missouri compromise and their respective bases plus the conservative Dems of the time formed the Republican party.
The original Progressive party had similar chaotic roots as a splinter of the Republican party of 1912. (See Teddy Roosevelt) This is the party some pundits try to associate with those who currently use the progressive label. The progressive party had some good anti oligarchy platforms but also embraced eugenics based on an imperfect understanding of humanities place in evolutionary theory.
Enough history for today. Use google if you want more.

We do plan to buy at some point but want to wait awhile longer. I don’t think the market is going to suddenly spike again in the next few years. I could be wrong but that is the chance we’re willing to take. Plus, we want to be 100% sure before we buy. I can’t honestly say though that I have even the slightest doubt that West Seattle is the right place for us. Every time we come over my husband and I actually feel like we are coming home. I don’t think I have ever met a rude person in West Seattle. I’m sure there must be some, I just haven’t met them yet. :) We want a community to live in and that is the vibe I have always gotten. I think that North Seattle is more transitional in some way. When you stack that community feeling up with all the beauty in West Seattle, it’s almost astounding. I’ve never in my life moved voluntarily. My mom pushed me out at 21. :) I see all the kids around and just feel right at home. There are very few kids where we live now. West Seattle feels like a place I could live my whole life and be thrilled to raise our child in. There are other parts of Seattle that are great, and I spent most of my summers there (Beacon Hill) with my sister growing up. But there is just something really special about West Seattle and I can’t even pinpoint what it is. It’s different from the rest of Seattle. It’s actually different from any place I have ever lived. I know this sounds cheesy, but it is a very special place.
I contacted Cloverdale today and we are going to meet and see the house next week. It seems perfect for our family. I got the vibe that they were really good people too so I’m not surprised you said that. Believe me, I don’t take this opportunity for granted. I could tell from one phone conversation that they were good, conscientious people! We rent from a decent man now who we have never met! I don’t need my landlords to be over everyday but get tired of the impersonal corporate attitude… We are elated for the opportunity.
So thanks again for the warm welcome. We are so unbelievably excited to join your community. It will be so great to come over the bridge and instead of feeling bittersweet that we have to leave in a few hours, feel happy to be coming home!
June 2, 2008 at 3:21 am #625703susieqMemberEllenator,
Welcome in advance to WS! You will love it here, with all the activities and things to do and warm & friendly folk! I’ve lived here for 13 years, and now when I say, “I’m just going downtown for some errands,” I mean ‘downtown’ West Seattle!” People from WS get it, but people from the ‘outside’ don’t……
I picked up this thread to ask you why you want to rent instead of buy in this buyer’s market, but more of that later.
I followed the craigslisting for the rental you like, and am just compelled to tell you that I am a neighbor of your potential landlords. You will not find nicer people. Simple statement. Honest! They are super-engaged in our communities, and work in fields they are passionate about. They have two cool school-age children who are fun to be with. I respect them immensely and adore their children, and if you like WS, you will find they embody our ‘small town’ spirit, with a global attitude. I’ve not rented from them, but I’m sure they are just the type of landlords everyone hopes for!
If you really need a rental, go with them as the best, but when you want something more permanent, get back to me, and we can talk about how to finance your 8-year olds’ college education through ownership of real estate. Honest. No more sales pitch. (I’m a Realtor, as well as a fortunate neighbor, permanent community volunteer, WS Blog lover, and wild WS booster!)
Best wishes! Look forward to finding you somewhere around West Seattle!

They want the federal government controlling Social Security like it’s some kind of federal program.

At the Gridiron, Mr. Bush slyly joked that he had the “dangedest puppy” who would roll over on command – but only some of the time. “I renamed him ‘John McCain.’ “

Is there anything worse than idealism that doesn’t conform to reality?
— Seymour Hersh
Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we. — George W. Bush

If you’re actually interested in the answers to your questions, then repeating a slur from the McCarthy era (or the Hoover administration more fittingly) is not the way to go about it.
The history of the phrase and it’s usage can be found here.

If you really are both as ignorant and confused as your post makes you seem, the experts are reading this blog and can set you straight.
That is if they had time and the inclination to do so.
I am not one of the party leaders or elected officials. I have however taken the time to educate myself about the important issues of the day as well as the origin of many of the current news items that our corporate news media seem to have recurring amnesia about.
If google is really not enough for you, and reading the long and tedious explanations on this forum from the caucus period is just too daunting, then ask your questions in a civil fashion and the answer shall be revealed unto you.
June 2, 2008 at 12:52 am #618752In reply to: McCain ?????
AnonymousInactiveOK, for you, I read it. I actually agreed with it for the most part. I think everyone feels the 2 party system sucks. How to get that realistically changed, is beyond me. I don’t think Nader should be shut out like he is. And he certainly has a point about it not really being his fault that Gore lost. Against Bush it should have been a slam dunk.
But you were asking about Obama. That’s probably true as well. That’s he’s in the pockets of big business to a degree like everyone else. It’s hard to tell if that’s his personal ethics, or the way of the system. Nader is a prime example of what happens if you just run on your principles. You don’t win. Is that a reflection of the candidate or us?
And my first choice was always Edwards too. Actually, Edwards, Clinton, Obama, in that order. Clinton blew it, so this is where we’re at.
