JanSParticipantAmen to that, TR…33 years here and counting :)
June 2, 2008 at 4:16 pm #625709
ellenaterMemberThanks, TR. We felt like we were supposed to be nomads too!! I know what you mean about turning down a good job to stay. It’s that difference between pleasure and happiness… The blog is awesome, BTW.
:)

GreenSpacesMemberI have been looking at rentals for almost three months – I do this for a living for my work as a relocation consultant for the Port of Seattle.
I saw a house Saturday that would be PERFECT for you. It’s at 5606 46th Ave SW. Call Steve at 406.690.0191. They have done a nice job in restoring an older home. Two bedrooms on the main floor and there is finished space and an office in the basement. Detached garage, tons of gardening space, if you like that sort of thing. They are pretty eco-conscious, too, if that’s your thing (I found I had a lot in common with them). Charming house, charming people. Tell them Wendy sent you.
PS My husband is from ALbany, OR and I am from Monroe, WA, both small country towns, and when we found West Seattle in 1997 when we were getting married we settled here and wouldn’t dream of moving! We love it here.

ellenaterMemberWendy,
Thanks so much!! Looks really great. I put a call in to Steve…
I think you nailed the West Seattle vibe as being sort of small towny feeling. But then it has all the great beauty and some great amenities too. I grew up in Rock Creek which was very small at the time. My husband grew up in rural Maine and Albany, NY.
We are very eco-minded BTW. If we’d stayed in Eugene, we would have had a cob house. They have a great alternative building community down there…
Thanks again!!

AnonymousInactiveellenater, you do realize we’ll all be expecting house warming invitations now, don’t you?
June 2, 2008 at 6:34 pm #625713
GreenSpacesMemberWell, the BEST part of West Seattle is that you feel like you live in the country or something, but you don’t and just across the bridge in less than 10 minutes is everything you could possibly need. I hated summers growing up because I was 10 miles from the nearest town and wouldn’t get to see my friends for 3 months. My husband wasn’t as remote and had more freedom, but as an artist-turned-software-developer, the small town attitudes didn’t work for him.
WS has the best of everything. We’ve becomine even more metro since moving here and “growing up”. The first house we bought was a 1929 farmhouse on a 1/4 acre lot in a very rural part of WS – no sidewalks, few street lights, wild animals, etc. Last year we sold it and moved to a townhome in High Point. My husband loves not having any responsibility, and I love not having to nag him. I am convinced the move and change in lifestyle has saved our marriage! And the dog and cats adjusted just fine and we are all very happy!

DubbyMemberHey, all you warm WestSeattlites!
Ellenater sent me this string so i could check out the wonderful reception and great tips you are all giving her on her family’s move.
Ellenater and hub and spawn are three of the most wonderful people in the world. They deserve West Seattle, and they will treat it as a treasure.
I lived in Capitol Hill years ago, but I had a partner for seven years who grew up on California Street and we spent every major holiday in West Seattle, each year. If I could, I would move there in an Oregon minute (which is slower and greener than a New York minute and has fewer taxis). ANYway, I just felt compelled to chime in and reassure you that the ellenaters are superb, and a great fit for WS. Thank you all for making my BFF so welcome. It brought a tear to my eye that my dear ellenater might finally have found “home”.
:-)

JenVMemberellenator- can I assume that since you hail from Eugene you are a Ducks fan? just so you know, there are a few of us out here. We just “duck and cover” when there are Husky fans about….
June 2, 2008 at 10:04 pm #625716
ellenaterMemberHey Dubby, thanks for the plug. (I swear I did NOT ask her to do that, lol). I do plan to get her up here someday, though. She’s actually the one who told me about West Seattle, before we moved. Sadly, I did not listen to her!
JT, that’s actually a really good idea. I’ll post on here once we get settled.
JenV, I am not really a Ducks fan. I guess I’m more of a Ducks fan than a Huskies fan, though. We are more baseball fans and used to go see the Ems. play a lot. That was really fun and less of a production than the Mariners. I’d say the husband is probably a Ducks fan, though since he actually went to UO.

FrippMemberellenater,
Looks like you have plenty of leads but I figured I would throw in the vacancy in North Admiral Court. We live there and are very happy. You can get more info at:
June 2, 2008 at 10:29 pm #625718
ellenaterMemberThanks, Fripp. We aren’t going to stop looking until we get a place. Those apartments look really nice but it looks like they only take cats. We have a puggle, also…

swimcatMemberThere is a house for rent at the corner of 37th and Myrtle in Gatewood. It is a cute house and I think it is a 2 bedroom. There are several houses for rent on 35th but I don’t know if you’d want to live on an arterial (it’s not appealing to me but some don’t mind it). Good luck with the search!
June 4, 2008 at 5:02 pm #625720
ellenaterMemberm,
I’ll check that one out. We’re not against arterials as a rule. If there is some good landscaping to cushion noise and it’s safe, then it’s all good.
We are very excited!!! It’s going to be so incredible to spend this summer exploring West Seattle!
June 4, 2008 at 6:01 pm #625721
AnonymousInactiveellenater – I saw a “For Rent” sign in my neighborhood at 40th and Dakota.
I can’t really tell what the house looks like, specifically, because it sits up kind of high (possibly a view?), but the neighborhood and street it’s on are beautiful.
June 4, 2008 at 6:38 pm #625722
ellenaterMemberThanks, New Resident! That’s a great area, I’ll check it out. :)
June 5, 2008 at 1:35 am #625723
amydunnParticipantEllenater,
There was a darling little house just off California and Thistle. Not sure on the rent, but it is a fabulous area!
June 5, 2008 at 2:10 am #625724
ellenaterMemberThanks amydunn. I’ll check that out too. :)

alkivikingParticipantKeep us updated, hope you find something fabulous! WS is an amazing place to live!
June 5, 2008 at 3:29 am #625726
mhogfossMemberTry looking for rental companies specifically. When I was trying to find places I found they weren’t posted in the usual places. Try to find out the main local management/rental companies and you should find some great listings.
June 5, 2008 at 7:52 am #625727
AnonymousInactiveIf you’re gonna go on the above advice, I can recommend Randall Berg and Associates.
That is who handled our rental and he was great!
June 5, 2008 at 3:22 pm #625728
ellenaterMemberThanks!
The apt. rental companies is a great idea. We are going to look at Cloverdale’s house this weekend and one other, I think. I’ll most definitely keep you updated. This is by far the friendliest and most helpful blog I have EVER been on.
June 5, 2008 at 3:32 pm #625729
JenVMemberthere was a thread on here awhile ago about rental companies in west seattle. my only experience was with Landlord Management, and I was not pleased with the level of attentiveness they paid to their properties.
June 5, 2008 at 11:11 pm #625730
ellenaterMemberThanks JenV. It’s as good to know the places to avoid as it is the places that are good…
June 10, 2008 at 7:55 pm #625731
ellenaterMemberHi everybody :)
I just wanted to give you an update: We’re coming!!! We had a good match with Cloverdale. We are so excited we can hardly stand it. We love the community even more now and feel so lucky to be coming. The Cloverdales are GREAT peoples and we feel very lucky to be renting from them. The house and neighborhood are just perfect for us!! I don’t mean to be cheesy, but we feel really, really lucky!!
SO, thanks again for all of the help. I really cannot thank you enough for the suggestions, leads, and kind words. When we get settled (in July) we’ll post about that barbecue. I’m sure we’ll post before then, too with lots of questions!… oh my god I have to pack…
May the force be with you!
