JanSParticipantI just came back from a most wonderful dinner at Springhill. The salad was wonderful..tender butter lettuce…the halibut with clam panzanella on a bed of pea vines was superb. I finished dinner with french press coffee and..OMG..chocolate….Chocolate cake like you’ve never had with a scoop of salty peanut ice cream and salty peanut bits along side…heavenly.
The service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere relaxed…definitely a great addition to West Seattle….thanks for picking us, Mark…

KayleighMemberGlad you enjoyed it, Jan.
Any vegetarian-friendly items there? I eat very little meat these days, and reading the menu on the main page left me wrinkling my nose.
May 26, 2008 at 4:16 pm #625164
JanSParticipantKayleigh… a few of their small plates were strictly vegetarian – one that caught my eye was a beet, pear, smoked hazelnut dish…it sounded yummy…. There is at least one pasta dish that I believe is vegetarian, too. My take is that there are more seafood/shellfish dishes than meat, if you’re inclined to eat seafood occasionally.

charlabobParticipantI spent a couple of years as a strict vegetarian and was amazed how willing chefs were to modify their dishes. I originally thought it would be too much work and somewhat insulting to ask — turned out neither was the case. I tried because I was tired of not going out with friends or eating only salads. Sometimes I’d call ahead, espcially if they published daily menus, to say, “I’d really love the Chicken a la Igor, but could you leave out the chicken?”
I suspect if you’re a rigorous vegetarian this might not work; if you don’t want to eat something cooked in the same pans with meat dishes, for example. But otherwise, it’s worth trying.

austinMemberGood to hear! I’ve been looking forward to sampling their fare since seeing the menu posted. Might have to make a stop in later on the way down to the pub.
May 26, 2008 at 5:49 pm #625167
KayleighMemberThank you. Might be worth a try. I do eat a little fish (and ocassionally chicken and turkey, but not much any more.)
Yum on the beet/pear/hazlenut thing…

BonnieParticipantSounds wonderful. Can’t wait to give it a try.

beachdrivegirlParticipantI tried to try Springhill last night but it was closed… Hoepfully I will get to try it soon.

JiggersMemberI love my steak and hope they have a few selections available. Bloody rare for me. Mmmmm good..
May 28, 2008 at 12:26 am #625171
JanSParticipantjiggers…they do have steak (and steak tartare)…and pork…and duck…and a 1/2 lb. burger served with…drum roll…beef fat fries….none of that “no trans fats” for us – lol…and I bet they taste heavenly :)
May 28, 2008 at 2:01 am #625172
JiggersMemberI’m not a fan of Tartare, but I hope they can serve up a Kobe style or Buffalo burger in the future. I’ll pay for that anyday over a Rocksport greasy burger yuk. Jak’s has the best burger around during happy hour.

KeithMemberChecked it out with a pal last night. It’s a great addition to the neighborhood. My salmon was a little overdone but otherwise the food was really good. They have some unique cocktails and a nice wine list.
.
A good sign (to me) was the lively crowd eating and drinking at the bar around 10-11pm. An even better sign: NO ANNOYING TELEVISIONS! Best sign of all: the chef’s wife (and co-owner?) came over to introduce herself, see what we thought and thank us for coming.

JanSParticipantKeith…I appreciated the friendliness, too. OUr server stopped and asked if we were West Seattleites, in the neighborhood…I am, my friend wasn’t. They just seemed very interested that they made us feel welcome…it was very nice, indeed…
May 30, 2008 at 5:17 am #625175
grrParticipantyup..checked it out tonight. I’ll be back. Nice to have an ADULT place to eat, even though there were a number of tables with very well behaved young people there. Extra kudos to great parents!
May 30, 2008 at 2:49 pm #625176
beachdrivegirlParticipantI am going to have to swing by there this weekend.
May 30, 2008 at 4:35 pm #625177
charlabobParticipantDo they have online menus yet? Their website still says “coming soon”?
May 30, 2008 at 9:15 pm #625178
JanSParticipantCharla…I haven’t found anything online at all. They had a menu posted on the door the night I was there, which is helpful. I really do feel that they need to get their website up and running…I think they’d get even more business…..and that’s what it’s about…right?
Maybe they just need a better webmaster? anyone out there want to volunteer? lol…

GenHillOneParticipantBulletin for food fans: Spring Hill Restaurant opens tonight
Charlabob – a sample menu is on 5/27 comment – I think some things are still in flux as they fine tune the offerings, it’s only been a week after all. We went last night too and everything was terrific from apps to dessert. 14-year-old (thanks grr, and would have sent you a drink had I known!) loved the duck. It must have been amazing, because I, who don’t usually prefer it, liked it as well. Our only real hitch was the a la carte bread. Seemed a little gauche and out of place at that price point.
May 31, 2008 at 2:43 am #625180
JanSParticipantGenHillOne…I agree about the bread….we didn’t get any, since it was extra. It was listed under “small plates”…not a small plate , in my book…
May 31, 2008 at 2:58 am #625181
charlabobParticipantI sent my friend a link to this thread and based on everyone’s raves, she’s going to Springhill tonight (after seeing “I’m My Own Wife.”) We really do rule!
I actually kind of like the idea of paying extra for bread–when they just bring it I graze on it–so if they don’t bring it, I won’t eat it. That sentence is barely lucid, but I understood it. :-)
May 31, 2008 at 6:46 am #625182
JanSParticipantlol..I understood, too. My arse doesn’t need the bread…and I’m perfectly happy not having it :). Hope your friend gives good reviews, too…
May 31, 2008 at 3:21 pm #625183
GenHillOneParticipantThere is SO much that you want to sop up though :P
May 31, 2008 at 5:22 pm #625184
JiggersMemberRestaurants waste an aweful lot of bread which can hurt their bottom line in the long run. Restaurants should ask the customer first if they want bread after you take their first drink orders. Your lucky that free water hasn’t become an issue yet.
May 31, 2008 at 10:23 pm #625185
grrParticipantThe bread at Spring Hill is WELL worth the $3. And $4 for a side of the scrumptious french fries was worth it as well. I was too stuffed to ask for a side of grits tho…
:)

JanSParticipanta late nite visit for a lemon drop, a side of fries, and chocolate….sounds wonderful….
