West Seattle, Washington
15 Wednesday
8:37 PM: Police and Fire are on the scene of a crash at 39th SW/SW Barton in Upper Fauntleroy [map] and have just told dispatch that Barton is completely blocked. The initial report was that a driver crashed into parked cars.
8:39 PM: The driver was initially described as a man around 60 years old, and they’re now saying this was a “medically related collision.”
8:43 PM: Police say eastbound traffic on Barton has resumed but “westbound’s going to be blocked for a while.”
We’ve been watching for the “mid-September” start of the road closure for resumption of a drainage project along Sylvan Way just west of Delridge Way [map], and just found crews setting out cones, barricades, and signs a short time ago. Seattle Public Utilities announced three weeks ago that the project would resume after three years on hold. Here’s the official construction notice for the work, expected to continue through the end of the year.
6:02 AM: Good morning! It’s Wednesday, September 17, 2025 – fall officially arrives in five days.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
After a record-tying high of 91 degrees on Tuesday, today is expected to be sunny and in the mid-70s. Today’s sunrise will be at 6:50 am; sunset will be at 7:16 pm.
ROAD WORK
-That portable crane was blocking a northbound lane of California just north of Oregon again Tuesday for the 4448 California project, so be aware that may continue.
–59th SW in Alki is closed for a month by the school-construction zone.
-“Natural drainage” construction toward the east end of Sylvan Way is scheduled to resume (let us know if and when you see work there – we weren’t able to check Tuesday).

Thanks to Susan for the photo. She’s one of two readers who noted that the SDOT pothole patrol has been out today on the Admiral Bridge. As discussed in previous coverage, resurfacing was not part of the just-concluded seismic-strengthening project, but as with any street, the city will dispatch to pothole reports – here’s how to report them, and here’s the map that’ll show you if anyone’s already reported the one(s) you’re concerned aboutt.
6:01 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, September 15, 2025 – fall officially arrives one week from today.

12:41 AM: Southbound Highway 509 is closed right now at Cloverdale – which is where you get on from the east end of the Roxbury corridor – because of a crash. The State Patrol is investigating, but a bulletin on Seattle Police radio described it as a “fatality collision,” saying the search was on for a suspected hit-run driver. No estimate yet how long the highway will stay closed.
3:04 AM: No updates yet. If you have to head out in the next few hours, you can check WSDOT’s traffic-alert map here.
6:20 AM: Reopened as of 4:30.
10:43 AM: The State Patrol’s summary of the crash says it involved a 50-year-old man on a motorcycle and two drivers in cars. All were headed southbound on 509 approaching the Myers Way exit. The motorcyclist changed lanes to exit; the hit-run driver hit him “at a high rate,” then veered into the right-side barrier. In a chain reaction, the other car then hit the car driver and veered into the motorcyclist. The first car driver left the scene; the rider’s bike wound up in the inside lane but he was found on the right shoulder and pronounced dead at the scene (the summary notes he was wearing a helmet). All the WSP has released about the hit-run driver is that they were in a Toyota (possibly white, it was noted on SPD radio last night) and that their car would be notably damaged.
4:07 PM: Additional information from WSP, which says the hit-run driver was last seen taking the Myers Way exit:
Parts from the suspect vehicle were left at the scene. It appears that the bumper of this vehicle was metallic blue painted white. The vehicle will have front and rear end damage.
WSP detectives are seeking anyone that witnessed this horrible collision or has information that would help identify the suspect vehicle. Please email Detective Gagley at Matthew.Gagley@wsp.wa.gov.

10:48 PM: An initial “rescue extrication” response was quickly downsized this past half-hour when crews got to the scene where a driver was reported to have gone over the embankment from Hamilton Viewpoint onto California Way below. They reported that the driver, a man in his early 20s, was out of the car and conscious, so no extricating was necessary. They’re now evaluating the driver for impairment.
11:02 PM: California Way remains closed while officers await an SDOT crew to clean up the fluid spill from the crash.
11:45 PM: Officers just told dispatch the street has reopened.
8:59 AM: Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry run is down to two boats.

Thanks to Aaron for the tip: The traffic signal at 42nd/Alaska in The Junction is dark. That makes it an all-way stop. Checking the Seattle City Light map, we see there’s a two-customer power outage right at that spot, blamed on “equipment failure,” so it is on SCL’s radar.

Earlier today, we published a reader photo of the ongoing work on the new Alki Elementary. We checked in with project manager Brian Fabella, who confirms that the project remains on track to be open in time for next school year, and forwarded the latest neighborhood newsletter about the project. It includes this road-work alert:
Our next steps include right-of-way storm extension work on 59th Avenue Southwest. Work will begin on 9/15 and involve closure of 59th Ave. SW until 10/15. Access for local traffic will be maintained, but through traffic will be restricted. After 10/15, road work will continue, but will not require closure to through traffic.

2:21 PM: Thanks for the tip. The Seattle Public Utilities water-trouble map confirms emergency repairs are under way at California/Juneau; our tipster says one lane is blocked. We’re headed down the hill for a look.
2:43 PM: The problem is on the northbound side of California, north of Juneau. Traffic’s getting by both ways using the southbound side.

SPU received calls around 12:30 p.m. about the incident at California Avenue Southwest and Southwest Juneau Street. SPU dispatched a response crew, which arrived about 20 minutes later. 11:14 PM: Avoid Delridge/Trenton – a crash is reported to be blocking the intersection and police have just told dispatch that “one of the parties involved” is getting CPR, but at this early stage they’re “not sure if he was a pedestrian or in a vehicle.”

12:28 AM: Police have just described this over the radio as a suspected case of DUI. Meantime, they’re waiting for an SDOT cleanup crew. whose work will enable the intersection to reopen. And we have an inquiry out to SFD regarding injuries.
1:01 AM: Officers have just told dispatch that the intersection has reopened.
ADDED MONDAY AFTERNOON: SFD says two people were treated, neither with life-threatening injuries:
-40-year-old male who was in stable condition. He was transported to Harborview via AMR.
-50-year-old female in stable condition. She was transported to a hospital via AMR.
2:08 PM: Thanks for the tip and photo. Northbound California Avenue SW is blocked in the 6900 block right now, just south of Morgan Junction, after a multi-car crash. The tipster reports, “Driver heading south swerved or lost control somehow and drove into a car heading northbound as well as a parked car.”
2:37 PM: Police are on scene now; our tipster reports the northbound lane is still blocked.
3:37 PM: Our tipster says both lanes are open now.
