FOLLOWUP: Avalon/Genesee closure to extend through Monday

One update today from SDOT since the end-of-week update on the Avalon/35th project:

As you plan for your Monday morning commute, we wanted to send a brief update to let you know that the east side of the intersection of SW Avalon Way and SW Genesee St will remain closed through Monday evening, May 6.

Extending the closure allows us to complete base paving of the intersection and SPU crews to complete the remaining emergency repairs on the water main before reopening the intersection to traffic.

The update we published last night, which includes SDOT responses to questions we asked after various problems were reported this past week, is here.

WORK ALERT: Crews returning to 35th SW in Arbor Heights

(SDOT map of original project zone)

Another alert from SDOT, this time for the half-mile of 35th SW where sidewalks were built last year. The project team says, “We have some final repair work to do on 35th Ave SW – some due to the snow/de-icing damages and … concerns and problems that emerged after project completion. Our crews will be returning to 35th Ave SW this coming Monday, 5/6 for up to two weeks to complete final repair work along the corridor. This work will be fairly low key and will not require complete closures or staging of equipment.” Here’s what they’ll be doing:

Crews will return to 35th Ave SW as early as this coming Monday, May 6 to begin last part of repair work as part of the Arbor Heights Safe Routes to School sidewalk project. This work includes:

106th St

west side of 35th Ave SW between SW 100th St and SW 106th St
 Hydroseed planting strip area along east side of 35th Ave SW between SW 102nd St and SW 104th
St

This work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. During this work, you can expect:
 Noise and dust from construction
 Work hours from 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday
 Temporary suspension of street parking on the west side of 35 th Ave SW between SW 100 th St
and SW 106 th St
o No-Park signs will be posted 3 days in advance to parking closure

3:16 PM: SFD and SPD have been dispatched to what’s described as a two-vehicle collision at 35th/Trenton. A texter says traffic is backing up in the area, so steer clear for a while. They tell us it’s on the northbound side.

3:40 PM: Our crew sent the photo we’ve added of the damaged cars. They’ve been moved out of the intersection, so no further traffic effects, and we’re told no one was seriously hurt.

We have received final road closure permission from King County Road Services Division, King County Department of Local Services. 4th Avenue SW will be totally closed from SW 100th Street to SW Roxbury Street starting Monday, April 29th. This closure will continue from April 29th to Monday, June 3rd, with the following work hours:

• Monday – Friday 7 AM to 5 PM
• Saturday – 9 AM to 5 PM

There will be additional brief road/lane closures following the initial closure to complete additional work.

We have coordinated with local residents, emergency services, schools, and area service providers.

AVALON PROJECT BEGINS: SDOT‘s big project is scheduled to get going this week. Our final preview, published Friday, has details on the sequencing and what to watch for.

SCHOOLS REOPEN: Districts that were on spring break last week (in our area, Seattle, Highline, and Vashon Island) are back in session today.
