In my apartment building we have a large bin underneath the mailboxes for recycling. It is stuffed full of the political mailers. Most people aren’t even taking them upstairs to their homes before tossing them. I’m one of them – right from mailbox into the bin. Thankfully I haven’t received any phone calls this election, which surprises me. Watch they all call this afternoon now. :)

Is it acceptable to dislike having every public green space, tree, and planting strip in town covered in stinking dog urine and parasite infected feces? I personally find it disgusting. My daughters bus stop (which happens to be a lovely grassy planting strip with two Japanese Maples and a telephone pole, in front of a very well maintained home) is so urine soaked and crap smeared, that I don’t dare let her venture off the concrete, or touch the trees or pole. Will dog owners ever admit that delivering/spraying fresh animal waste to all our community gathering areas is at best a disservice to all others? Why do you have to bring your dog to my house to crap? Picking up MOST solid waste is still leaving a lot of waste, isn’t it? Try this- next time you visit the bathroom, avoid the toilet and do ALL your business on the floor- then, perform a light pick up with a plastic bag. Is that nice? Now, have your dog do this outside all your neighbors homes and businesses, everyday, forever.

Again, we apologize, we are just trying to limp through until the overhaul is ready to go live, and every time we think it is, we sit down with the developer and doublecheck things and then there’s one more feature that isn’t ready to go … it’s really close, though, but that doesn’t help today, or tomorrow. If we could fix the glitches in the meantime, we would, but as has been noted, they’re not even consistent (why one post but not another? why one user but not another?), so there’s no way to troubleshoot. I advise people to clear their browser cache and that sometimes seems to help. Thanks yet again, for the 2 millionth time, for your patience. The software on which the forum runs, bbPress, has actually been folded INTO WordPress, the much-used content management system on which the rest of the site runs, as of a while back, so when the upgrade goes live, reflecting the truly current state of the software, it will be all be one big happy family of functions … TR

Please note that not everyone thinks development is bad and developers are bad. I like developers. I’m thankful developers have provided housing for my family and countless others in West Seattle.

Attention candidates: did it ever occur to you that your junk mailers actually have the OPPOSITE effect on voters of what you intended? That, instead of making people more interested in you and your junk advertising, you are creating a version of “levy fatigue”, whereby voters are so sick and tired of having pulp fiction stuffed down their throats that they simply retreat, rather than engage?

Y’know, I’ve been reading that turnout is low this election. If it were possible to cease getting mailers, phone calls, etc as soon as you turned your ballot in, think turnout would be higher?

I just don’t even bother answering the phone any more. Wish I could just get rid of it entirely.

As for the mailers, on Tuesday of last week I received NINETEEN of them on one day. Yup, you read that right. They barely fit in my mailbox. This practice is an atrocious waste, on every level.

At 8AM, I found a large iPhone in the planter strip on the east side of the 5900 block of 49th Ave SW between Raymond and Juneau. I’d like to get this back to you – can you describe the case or the carrier or the cover picture? DBS in Seaview

yes, there are a whole lot of people in liberal Seattle who have been watching big money buy candidates at city hall for way too long; and a whole lot of people in liberal Seattle are sick and tired of it

it’s not just “wealthy folks”; it’s the who’s who of downtown big money developers

I cannot wait until this election is over! (already mailed in our ballots this weekend btw). In the course of the last 3 days we’ve receieved 8 different calls, some robo- call, some real live people shilling for the candidates of several races- even a robo -call fro Ed Murray (don’t know about what, I hung up).

    .

The topper is that this weekend marked the 5th, yes 5th, from Lisa Herbold’s campaign even though I told the first 3 callers (4th was robo) to stop calling my number.

    .

Good Goddess! It’s just pointless insanity – nothing they say could ever sway me, I vote exclusively based on what’s written by reliable sources.

rw, to my knowledge, Lisa Herbold isn’t a member of a bona fide socialist party. I don’t believe Nick Licata is, either.

As you know, politicians make tactical alliances and even reluctant agreement with colleagues in order to accomplish the tasks of governig without necessarily embracing each other’s entire political agenda.

If you want to engage in the kind of “same as” line of reasoning that has surfaced in some of the attempts here to have a discussion about socialism v. communism v. capitalism v. social democracy, that’s disappointing and unhelpful. My impression was that you are above that.

Diane those “not for sale” signs have implications that are pretty rude and unfair to Braddock.

Overall the race has been civil, focusing on issues and relatively free of negativity, and wow has that been refreshing.

Somehow I don’t think even Lisa Herbold would have thought those signs were cool- and if she did endorse that sort of campaigning…

    #828697

JoB & justadumbguy, I think the original question had more to do with “situations such as this” than it did to the specific example mentioned.

Anyway, I think Shannon did a pretty good job addressing the overall issue. Maybe read both of their answers again and see if you agree?

rw; 1st, it’s nice to see someone doing their homework; kudos to you for that

re “Unlike Diane I am not a member of anyone’s campaign team”

    wth does that mean?

I am also “just a woman” offering my two cents worth

I’m proud/honored to be supporting the BEST candidate to represent WS and South Park (many people keep forgetting about South Park); and so grateful to Lisa for her dedication over decades of advocating for workers’ rights and housing equity, and so much more

I am a WS resident who has volunteered countless hours; no one is paying me; no one can tell me what to say

My opinions are based on many months of research; following all the city council races; I’m also supporting Kshama Sawant (although, sadly, cannot vote for her this time; I did campaign for her last time), and Jon Grant for the at-large seat, and Bill Bradburd for the other at-large seat; and Michael Maddux, and Tammy Morales; I can’t vote for Michael or Tammy, but I can campaign for them; does that mean I’m a “member” of their campaign teams? not really; just a volunteer who has spent 100’s of hours this year trying to get the best candidates elected; we need 5 progressive votes on CC to get anything good passed

It’s been almost a year all this has been going on; I reached out to both Shannon and Lisa back in Feb/March, meaning I met them both in person, and asked both of them questions; in fact, in the primary season, I met nearly all of the 47 candidates running for all the CC seats, and talked at length with many of them; I highly recommend doing that, in addition to all the rest you can read/watch on video; and if you go to a candidate forum, go up afterward to introduce yourself; that’s why they’re there, so you can get to know them and ask your own questions

I have attended nearly every candidate debate/forum since Feb, and watched all the candidate debates on seattlechannel; and regularly check the KC Elections SEEC website to “follow the money”, who is contributing to all the candidates; VERY important information

and the endorsements, VERY revealing; and reading the many questionnaires candidates have completed

I’m also on the email list for nearly every city council candidate, including Lisa and Shannon; so I’ve seen the wealth of position papers detailing progressive policy objectives by Lisa, and not so much by Shannon; in fact, in all these months, I’ve seen/heard very little specifics from Shannon on any issue; she has made it very clear that she’s “very excited to be running”

Shannon is smart and very nice; I would like to believe she naively got into this campaign before realizing that all the “big money” donors would join her, as they would for any candidate running against Lisa Herbold; because Lisa will stand up to developers in a way that no one except Kshama Sawant and Jon Grant have been willing to do until now; all that money going into Shannon’s campaign is about trying to take down Lisa; “they” are afraid renters may actually soon get some tenant rights, because Lisa represents tenant interests in this race; and that is #1 reason why I support Lisa; she will fight for my right as a renter to NOT have my rent raised 100%, or evicted for no reason; about ½ of WS/SP residents are renters, and we need Lisa Herbold on city council to represent us, so we can continue living in WS/SP

JoB, I’m under the impression there isn’t a lot on a practical level that can be done with projects that have already been approved. I’m not up on the specific measures Lisa Herbold referred to in her response, but hopefully those will include more realistic assessments of public transportation resources and impacts on neighborhood street parking than what we’ve seen so far. I’m just glad I live in easy walking distance to the Junction and have gotten old enough that the climb qualifies as exercise.

Unlike Diane I am not a member of anyone’s campaign team. In fact, I’ve never met Shannon in person. But I did attend several of the debates, and listened to others. And I read everything I could from the campaigns and in the press.

I’ve also read endorsements by West Seattleites that I really respect, such as former mayor Greg Nickles, Phillip Tavel, and former director of the Senior Center Karen Sisson, as well as numerous media, unions, and other civic and environmental groups such as Cascade Bike Club. In no way would all of those diverse groups and individuals back Shannon if she were a tool of downtown business interests, as Lisa’s campaign would have people believe.

Lisa has a lot to recommend her as well. I voted for her boss, Nick Licata, a number of times over the years. But his positions evolved over the years, just as all of our perspectives evolve. And I am convinced that Shannon’s more holistic approach is better for West Seattle and the rest of Seattle than Lisa’s dogmatic approach — at least as I heard it expressed during the debates and in Lisa’s position papers.

Lisa is detail oriented, yes. She is passionate (as are her supporters), yes. Does Lisa have a lot to offer? Absolutely. But I am convinced that Shannon will do a better job of furthering the diverse interests of the West Seattle community.

As I said at the outset, I am not affiliated with any campaign. I am just one guy offering my two cents worth.

    Rubbish,Diane.

I reached out to Shannon via email and she told me that her logon to this forum has not been working. (It’s happened to me and others at times.) So I offered to post a statement on her behalf. Here is Shannon’s response:

    **********

We need to manage growth in an intentional way with the well-being of ALL our communities in mind. To that end, I would like to establish a process by which communities can engage earlier in the development process – and not just with the current SEPA related design review process. As Tracy mentioned, there are opportunities in situations like this one to ask DPD to hold a special meeting for community input, but these meetings are currently not required. I’d also like to build a step into the design approval process that would require developers to gather input from the community and implement things such as setbacks or landscaping aspects. There may be situations where streamlined design review is appropriate – for example if the developer has built a similar building already in the community. I don’t yet know the best way to do this and there are challenges around balancing affordability and creating housing, but it is something I’ll be focused on if elected.

I support the urban village concept and believe that is where our density should be focused. However, not all urban villages are the same. Until our transit and transportation infrastructure has caught up with our growth, I believe we should have parking requirements appropriate to the neighborhood’s capacity. In West Seattle we are over capacity now and it’s worth revisiting some of the rules related to parking and frequent transit zones. I am not supportive of the up-zoning of single family neighborhoods but I do support the potential of making it easier for homeowners to have attached accessory dwelling units (ADUs) or detached accessory dwelling units (DADUs) as a way to address affordability issues. I like the concept of providing incentives so families can transition garages into mother in law type units – akin to the work being done in Portland, OR. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/08/garden/grandma-never-had-it-so-good.html?_r=0 Council member O’Brien is exploring changes to allow single family homes to be converted to multi housing units while maintaining the zoning requirements related to height, bulk and lot coverage. I’m open to learning more about this concept to see if it helps to address some of our affordability and neighborhood challenges.

The city is facing a challenge balancing affordability and maintaining the character of our neighborhoods and I think having a District Council member will be a great asset in engaging our communities in this discussion.

I also support developers paying impact fees to contribute to our transportation infrastructure, schools, and parks to help mitigate the effects of growth. Additionally, I support the grand bargain from the Housing Affordability Committee which charges a 3% linkage fee on all new commercial development to go toward an affordable housing fund. Thank you for your question. My email is shannonbraddockford1@gmail.com if you would like to email me directly.
