“1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture” is a documentary that explores the claim that the word “homosexual” was mistakenly added to the Bible during an English translation of the Revised Standard Version (RSV) in 1946.
The film’s core details and context include:The Core Premise: The documentary argues that translation committee members broke with tradition and translated the Greek words arsenokoitai and malakoi in 1 Corinthians 6:9 as “homosexuals”. The filmmakers assert this introduced the word into the Bible for the first time, helping fuel decades of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and evangelical opposition.
The Filmmaker’s Perspective: Directed by Sharon “Rocky” Roggio, a lesbian whose father is a conservative pastor, the film blends theological research with deeply personal, lived experiences. It examines how this translation continues to impact queer Christians and their families today.
Historical Evidence: The film utilizes archived documents from Yale University to piece together why and how the term was initially inserted.
