so tied poop bags that aren’t smearing crap all over the inside of the garbage can would be ok?

    Your assumptions are incorrect.

“Ya, I get that its your garbage can but so what?”

Maybe we need a “poop friendly” sticker of some sort to help identify those who are “chill, relaxed, laid back enough” to allow it?

My guess is that most people who don’t give a rip live in an apartment or condo and don’t have to deal with untied poop bags that smear crap all over the inside of garbage cans. And yes, it’s a worse smell that bagged garbage.

Laziness and selfishness should not trump common courtesy.

LOL… if everyone used doggy diapers

where would they dispose of them?

because the same people who won’t carry poop bags home or to a public receptacle aren’t likely to let their beloved pups risk soiling their environment ;-) ;-)

yes Smitty.. it could be worse :-)

NNW-thank you, I have often wondered if the manner in which folks post on these threads is the same manner in which they interact with other human beings on a daily basis. This is a 60-post thread on dog sh*t just so we are all clear, did everyone forget dogs don’t really control how, and when they move their bowels or micturate? I am sure some of the haughty attitudes on here will exclaim “There’s training for that!”-sure there is, if one can afford it. So they can’t go on parking strips, they can’t go in green spaces, they can’t go on the sidewalk, ok, where in the H can they go then? Some people live in apartments and don’t have a yard to turn into a public toilet. Christ on a bike everyone, lighten up, there are bigger fish to fry than steaming piles of poo, how about how frustrating it is that most days it takes an hour or more to get from the west Seattle bridge to downtown, or that because of the shift I work I don’t have a choice to use public transportation. It must be nice to have such luxury in life that dog sh*t warrants this much attention ::::shaking my head in disbelief:::

*and I better add that my two beautiful golden retrievers are free to take a dump wherever they please and I willfully pick it up–urine on the other hand, sorry no doggy diapers for my boys*

“I always prefer bagged, in my garbage can. If I were to ever see anyone putting it there, I’d likely thank them for not leaving it in the grass :-)”

And there it is, the classic Seattle response.

Thank you for not doing something way worse!

I’d like to thank everyone for leaving dog crap on my lawn rather than smearing it all over my front porch like you could have! Huh?

Every time I go to the athletic play fields at High Point or Hiawatha there are always off-leash dogs running around. I was in a play field doing a series of warmup exercises last summer and some woman’s off-leash dog started chasing me and jumping at me. I was a little bit nervous because I didn’t know the dog’s intentions and I’m not really a fan of dogs (or getting jumped on). The woman (ineffectually) yelled for the dog and then she finally came over to pull the dog away. I told her that dogs aren’t allowed on play fields and that the signs say there is a $180 fine. She just gave me attitude, yelled something at me, and then wandered off. So I’m the bad guy because she ignores the rules and is an irresponsible dog owner. I would love to call someone (parks dept., police, animal control) to complain about all the off-leash dogs on the beaches, parks, and play fields, but there is absolutely no enforcement of the rules and that empowers a-holes to do whatever they want and cop an attitude if you try to call them on it.

Can I add that I can understand some of the frustration in this post due to the fact that I’ve had to clean dog crap off my shoes on 3 separate occasions over a one week period. One was in my front yard right next to my car, the other two were at a community center playfield (where the off-leash dogs run free every single day despite the many signs that state dogs aren’t allowed).

It was also frustrating last month when some jackass bagged his dog’s poop and the left the poop-filled bag in my yard. WTF? What kind of moron bags the poop and then just drops it on the ground? Seriously, if you are the inconsiderate type of dog owner that can’t be bothered with properly disposing of your animal’s waste, might I suggest you do the rest of us a favor and get a sweet indoor cat instead? Yeah, I said it!

I agree- that got a little hotter than it needed to. Kind of exciting, though- and who called Mike Shirley..? ;)

Well, we all know that dog people passionately love their dogs and dog-stuff.

And maybe now dog people know how passionately (some) dog-less people love not encountering dog by products- and with this shared perspective, perhaps we can all be a little more understanding, and float back to somewhere in the middle.

    Thank you.

Not! However, it’s starting to feel that way.

Hello, woman in the tan VW van, who parks right in the entryway. Has at least two dogs off-leash, and claimed today to have only used the baseball fields once this week, but uses the park area to let her dogs run loose. Her off-leash pooch ran right at us this morning, barking angrily, paying no attention to his owner, who kept calling his name–to no avail. I calmly told her that it just wasn’t cool. So, being diplomatic, she asked me when I’d like her to come–at what hour, and I pointed out that the fields were for baseball, and the park was not an off-leash dog park. To which she said, “Then why don’t you call 911?”

Minutes later, on the parking lot side of the park, it was a man playing fetch with his off-leash retriever, who made a beeline right for us: absolutely ignoring his owner’s voice. I mentioned he was lucky that my dog was friendly.

This sucks. My other dog would not enjoy being greeted by either the snapping poodle-mix nor the over-zealous retriever! And I don’t want to have to think about it when I take a walk in the morning. Two weeks ago it was the idiot on her phone on the field, ignoring her two extra-large poodles, one who took a hankering for my terrier and headed off the field right at us, snarling. “He won’t hurt you!”, said the idiot as I screamed at her to get her dog away from us, and she yelled uselessly at her dog to return.

Besides feeling threatened by these loose animals, that baseball field is getting a regular workout by many a dog, and y’all know what dogs can do to the terrain. Isn’t it our tax dollars that pay for the upkeep of the park?

This is small stuff…I know. There are so many other, real problems. But being good to each other starts small. And, Bar-S is not a off-leash dog park.

No longer can I walk my on-leash dogs in the periphery of the fields

@ Ws98116: To be frank is to be direct.

In none of my posts did I let bad behavior off the hook. What I DID say is that the over the top reaction to the topic at hand is at issue. There are all sorts of ways to deal with this issue, but for you it is clearly a veritable assault on your person. To me, it is something I find to be irritating but not something that cause me to rupture an organ. It has nothing to do with having a dog so much as what can I really do about it? I can bring my can in. If there happens to be poop in it I put it in the small bin outside of my garage, where I place the bag from my yard collections, and forget about it. I can’t collar every scofflaw. If you read my first post, I have returned said abandoned poop to the rightful owner.

As to dogs being filthy and parasitic; it’s simply not accurate. Cat’s on the other hand, wander the neighborhood and crap in your garden, bury it and let you dig in it, subjecting you to their parasites, which are much more numerous and to toxoplasmosis, which is incredibly harmful. Not to mention that there are cats EVERYWHERE.

@Valvashon: First of all, yes, I think fishing a poop bag out of your garbage bin and then flinging it in the street is absolutely insane. Perhaps not clinically but figuratively. As to my comment that you’d cut a b**** well, perhaps that was a bit of humor…or would you? You live in a neighborhood with a lot of dogs and dog walkers. Elimination functions happen and the vast majority of people deal with it appropriately. I’m sorry that the scofflaws make you feel that you need to police you garbage can so scrupulously.

Mark47n- “psychotic” that I tossed a bag of dog waste into the street? Why is it acceptable to use my garbage can for anything if you are out and about- pack it in and pack it out. If my garbage can wasn’t there you would have had to pack it out, so pretend that it isn’t there. I don’t work from home and can’t always be there to pull the cans in right away, and your other solution of putting out a special container for it just shows you aren’t paying attention- I don’t want to deal with dog waste in any fashion!

If somebody on the street bumps into me I consider it an accident- your thought that I might shank somebody for doing just that again shows you aren’t paying attention. There’s a world of difference between bumping into somebody and using my can to dispose of your dog waste. I guess it takes a special kind of dog-owning denial to confuse the two.

And yes, I will keep tossing dog waste into the street. As long as inconsiderate dog owners keep putting it in my trash can or leaving in on the planting boulevard. That’s why I keep a flat shovel on hand.

“I don’t spend a lot of time searching for unwanted trash in my garbage can between Sunday and Monday evening.”

For some reason, whoever puts their bag in my can does so on Monday afternoon! When I take out my first bag of trash there is always a bag of poop on the bottom. I have to reach in and remove it so as not to have the weight of my garbage cause it to squish out all over the inside of my can – nice visual, huh?

“For every person that is super upset by your poop bag there is another one that doesn’t mind at all”

Exactly why we should all assume that people would be super upset. Err on the side of caution.

Ok, Wsea98116, you’ve said your piece. You’ve ranted about dogs and dog owners. You’ve made it clear that dogs aren’t welcome in your little corner of the ‘verse. Now, what are you going to do? You can’t eliminate them (get it?) and you’ll never make others conform to your desires. That goes for all who feel the need to rant and rave about poor behavior that isn’t hurting anyone but is merely just rude. I didn’t excuse the bad behavior, just pointed out that there are ways to mitigate it which is all you’ll be able to do. Quite honestly, many here (in W. Washington, Seattle in particular) get so very worked up over the slightest of slights, I can’t imagine how you don’t just explode with rage. Perhaps you just need a dog to provide a little unconditional support and a little hair around your house.

As to the idea that everything is so filthy that you can’t let you child touch it; lighten up, Francis! You survived childhood and I’m sure that there were plenty of gross things around, way fewer helmets and Purell didn’t exist yet. Things like cat poop, way nastier than dog poop with way more parasites and bacteria, lead paint and asbestos in your house…like popcorn ceilings, to say the least. So many parents shelter their children so much that it actually stunts them developmentally. I’ve actually had other parents exclaim in horror upon learning that my children started using public transportation in middle school, that we let them walk up to the Junction alone, when they were much younger, or that we’ve left them home alone overnight, they are now 15 and 17). They’ve survived well into high school, at this point, and they’ve handled way grosser stuff than dog poop during their time at their grandparents where there are 20ac of woods, chickens, rabbits, a stream and a swamp, to say nothing of other wildlife.

If you feel that the act of fishing a bag of poop out of one of our various rubbish bins and then hurling it in the street is not as nutty as a Pearson nut roll I can only assume that you’re the person who screams obscenities at people who cut in line trying to get on I-5NB, even though your windows are up. Sometimes you just have to accept that some people just suck and you just can’t fix it.

I plan to continue to walk my dog and let them pee and poop on various parking strips (and pick up the poop). Additionally, I look forward to The Hydrant opening and if you don’t like it then don’t go in. It’s simple, really, just like Beveridge Place.

As to parking strip ownership; the homeowner may hold the land but from the sidewalk to the street is a public right of way. That said, the homeowner is reponsible for the maintenance of that strip of right of way, to include maintenance and repair of the sidewalk.

I recognize your frustration with bad dog owners/walkers and their disposal of the poop. However, you and the rest of the ranters are beginning to paint with a pretty broad brush. There are plenty of reprobates around here that mishandle waste but their number is small and you simply can’t battle individuals, short of catching them one at a time. You may hate it – I hate finding that little blue bag in my recycling bin – but your best solution is to not leave it out. Having lived in cities for most of my life I can say it’s the best solution for protection of propert: don’t leave it out if you don’t want it damaged or to have poop in it. Another solution is to accept that this happens and place a samll, labeled and lined can out for poop, although then you’s have to tie the liner, toss it in your trashcan and put in a new liner. There are no perfect solutions.

I will say, however, that the level of rancor over this is odd and that Valvashon’s response, to hurl said bag into the street, is…psychotic. You see a poop bag in your trash can, reach in and then hurl it into the street? If this get’s your gears spinning like that what happens when someone bumps into you on the sidewalk? Val, do you cut them?

You know how some things start under past social norms, or at an acceptable level, and become customary- but then morph into something altogether different? Like tossing spent cigs. In the past, cigarette butts were discarded where they were smoked, and weren’t considered litter (by smokers, anyway). But butts are trash! The problem is, it’s always been done this way, so get over it, right?! (No, it’s still litter..)

People imposing their dogs on others is another situation that started out at a tolerable rate of occurrence, but has gotten way out of hand! It’s not new, but it was never like this before! When I was a kid, we left our dogs at home, and they were happy to see us return. The only person that took their dog downtown, or out to dinner, was Zsa Zsa Gabor! And nobody picked up dog poop, but it didn’t matter- because volume was low, and the impact negligible. But now, everyone has dogs, and they wouldn’t dare visit the dentist/hardware store/coffee shop without them! Suddenly people cried- there’s too much crap! So, owners were forced to make a cursory attempt at picking up the crap. But, that doesn’t always work for a variety of reasons, and- there’s still too much crap! And just like cigarette butts are litter- poop is poop, and pee is pee (even from a dog). If I walked by your house every day, and pissed on your mailbox- you’d lose your mind! If I took a dump in front of Starbucks, and then (hopefully) picked up most of it in a plastic baggie- they’d have me arrested, and then have crime scene cleaners in hazmat suits dispatched to remove the planter boxes!! And rightly so- because pee is pee, and butts are litter, and what was once manageable (like service dogs assisting disabled people), has spiraled wildly out of control.

Thank you wsea98116! Also not OK: putting your bagged doggie waste in my garbage can. I don’t have a dog so I don’t have dog sh*t in my can, OK? When I do find it in there (I practically have to run out after the garbage has been picked up- otherwise I get a little present in my tiny can if I leave it out for a day) I toss it into the street. Gives the original depositer a chance to pick it back up and dispose of it properly. If and when a certain neighbor moves I’m putting up “No dog business” signs on my boulevard strip. I’ve let the neighbor situation go on too long to do anything about it, but that doesn’t mean the rest of you get to use my lawn for your dog’s business!

or at least truck – seem to think its okay to travel in the bus lane on the viaduct.

Spotted at 6:30 am ish, traffic going the speed limit and this driver decides its okay to move over into the bus lane till about SODO and then enter the main travel lanes.

I almost understand when things are backed up that someone is desperate enough to use the bus lane, but come on, no back up – travelling at speed limit or above and you still have to use the bus lane to pass cars in the main line? Really?
