Jeannie… you are absolutely right! It’s not the dog that was at fault. As a pet owner, the guy should have been more responsible and attentive to his off-leash animal – even more so with a breed that is known to be a bit more aggressive. It’s sad that these breeds (and others, such as pitbulls) get a bad rap because they’re owners are the ones perpetuating the poor behavior.

I think the most terrible mess I have made is with a rip saw on styro.

If yer handy at all I suspect you would already have the tools/junk/debris to make a hot wire saw to cut that large a chunk of styro.

Just jumping in because this caught my eye on a quick cruise through the admin end looking for spam. We covered this two years ago and I’m surprised to hear it’s still not settled:

And FWIW I am the child of alcoholics (Dad drank his liver to fatal shreds at 44), and pretty much avoid the stuff because for six years I’ve been sleep-deprived enough that one drink would send me face-down into the keyboard.

ANYWAY:

*Senior centers are NOT just for seniors

*The Senior Center of West Seattle (which for disclosure’s sake I should note is an off-and-on WSB sponsor) is a venue for activities that serve many ages

*It’s also a nonprofit and needs $ to stay afloat (see the story linked above)

*One EXTREMELY popular not-just-for-seniors event it hosts, with booze (I guess on the temp licenses, still), is the monthly Rainbow Bingo

here’s the info from the Liquor Control Board fact sheet:

A senior center license is created [by SB5310 eff. June 12, 2014].

• The license permits a senior center to sell spirits by the glass, beer and wine at retail for on-premises consumption.

• The annual fee is $720.

• The license is only available to nonprofit organizations whose primary service is providing recreational and social activities for seniors on the licensed premises (senior center).

• Alcohol servers under the license must obtain a mandatory alcohol server training permit.

• In order to qualify for the license, the senior center applicant must:

 – be a nonprofit organized under Washington law;

 – be open at times set by the LCB; and

 – offer limited food service as required by the LCB.

If you are on facebook, I would HIGHLY recommend joining the group “Car Seats for the Littles.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/CarSeatsForTheLittles/?ref=br_tf

The techs on that board should be able to recommend a good resource for finding a cheap safe carseat.

I am not sure what your budget is, but another option is to buy a new Cosco Scenara. It is not an infant seat, but can be used for infants including newborns. You can buy it new for under $40.00 from Walmart or even on Amazon.

A final idea (which I would be very cautious about) is to check out the West Seattle Community Garage sale for a car seat. Just be sure to check the expiration date, make sure it has not been in an accident, and make sure it has never been checked as luggage on a plane. I believe we will have a car seat (that would fit this criteria) at our sale, but not certain.

Our Wilderness Program – with Becca Hall of Frog Hollow School

Becca Hall was homeschooled/unschooled for seven years, including all of high school. When she was eighteen, she attended Stanford University, where she graduated with Interdisciplinary Honors in English. She received her Masters in Environmental Writing from the University of Montana. She is now a poet and a novelist. Before starting Frog Hollow in January 2011, she had taught poetry in elementary school classrooms, tutored high school English, and taught college composition.

The elementary age curriculum integrates arts, music, social studies, mythology, and ecology into a solid core of language arts. Through a mix of writing, art projects, stories, singing, creative play, and outdoor exploration, students receive a firm foundation in creative writing, rhetoric, grammar, spelling, and literature. As they explore written language from many angles, they develop their own sense of themselves as writers. Part of each day is also spent at the park playing and exploring nature.

This post is 6 years old so it may be out of date, but they seem to recommend clothes and shoes and jelly beans. The idea of local t-shirts or sweatshirts seems good – easy to find, lightweight and easily packed.

Laid-back 5yo male kitty needs new home

Riley is searching for a forever home. He is a sweet, laid-back, loving kitty that needs a new home. He came to me as a foster kitty for a friend who had gotten a job in another country and needed to rehome him. Riley originally came with his best buddy, but his buddy got sick and passed away, leaving only Riley :(. Now Riley needs to find a new home.

He would do best in a home where he can either be the boss cat or only cat (after his buddy passed away, his temperament changed from a submissive cat to one more dominate. It would be best if he was to be paired with another cat if they entered the home at the same time, instead of him entering another cat’s territory. Riley was briefly paired with another cat about a week ago and it didn’t work out Riley ended up being too bossy.). Riley is a total cuddle kitty and likes to lay on your chest for his daily loves. He would prefer a home where he can be an indoor/outdoor cat or have a deck to lay on. He would also love to have a cat tree of his very own.

His favorite activities are playing with his mice, eating catnip and getting his head scratched.

Riley would do fine in a home with a dog or children. He has been around a small dog and they were fine within a week. He has a very laid back personality and a high tolerance for rough play.

The kitty-gritty

Riley is a big (abt 15-17lbs) 5yo, neutered, short haired black male. He has been microchipped (I do not know the number though). He has had his shots / rabies but not in a few years, so he’ll need boosters. He uses a covered litter box with a liner, w/ clay or pine litter ( hates pellets). If he doesn’t feel that you are keeping his litter box clean enough he will pee in your bathtub right over the drain. He had a urinary blockage in 2011, which was treated and has not reoccurred. He is currently on Royal Canine Indoor Light 40 cat food (avail. at Petco or PetPros) to loose some weight, he eats twice a day, previous attempts at free feeding have resulted in him overeating. He is a food hound and loves wet food (which he gets once in a blue moon) and Greenies. His favorite toy are fur mice and he will bring them into the bathroom so he can bat them around better on the slick tile. He is very mellow and will let you easily brush him or trim his front claws. He comes with a harness, toys, bowls, catnip and some food (litter box can be included if you need it).

The first thread contains numerous links to data sources regarding Metro’s costs and the specific efforts the county and transit employees have made to reduce or control those costs, contrary to Carlson’s rather general and mostly unsubstantiated allegations. It also points out where some costs are out of the county’s control. For example, pension benefit levels are set by the state legislature.

The second thread includes a link to the enabling ordinance which discusses how excess funds will be distributed and that the tab fees and sales tax increase may be rescinded if the legislature ever passes a transportation funding package.

As far as Carlson’s comments, he is approaching this from a ‘freeways are better’ and ‘less government’ points of view although he never specifically says that. What he does do is refer to the Eastside Transportation Alliance which primarily composed of conservative business interests and the WA Policy Center, a conservative think tank.

ETA is or has been affiliated with Kemper Freeman, the Bellevue developer who has made his anti-public transportation stance clear. Freeman sued Sound Transit all the way to the state Supreme Court (and lost) in an effort to prevent light rail from being installed on the I-90 floating bridge.

One of the issues with evaluating ‘sub-area equity,’ the term for determining how to allocate taxes based on where they are collected, is the difficulty with determining which routes are assigned to which area as many routes serve multiple jurisdictions (as I recall, Metro operates in about 40 jurisdictions.) It would be interesting to see the ETA analysis Carlson refers to but doesn’t provide a link to.

It’s pretty easy to use a search engine to find add’l info on ETA, the WA Policy Center, Freeman. etc.
