trickycooljParticipantI’m visiting my family in Germany soon and my twin cousins are turning 16 just before I visit. I haven’t seen them since they were 12. I also don’t know any teens here in the states and turns out my colleagues fall in the categories of kids over 25, kids under 10, or no kids yet. So WSB Readers, what’s cool for the teens these days? Or if you had exchange students recently what were they totally fascinated with? One caveat is that the driving age is 18 in Germany so car stuff is out.
I was thinking maybe some goofy very American snacks that they see in movies, like Twinkies or Skittles or peanut butter, could be fun.
There’s naturally cool, not too expensive jewelry at various shops at the Junction, but I don’t know if that’s interesting to teens? Maybe for my aunts/grandma.
Seattle shirts/hoodies? I’m a Husky so that’s always an easy choice. Doubt they’d really get the Seahawks thing since it’s American football. Of course they’ve probably had their growth spurt so I have no idea what size they wear and feel silly asking.
Bonus if they’re small easy to pack things since the 50lb luggage weight limit seems pretty strictly enforced now.

angelescrestParticipantI’d check out urban outfitters online, and stay with a light-to-pack shirt, t-shirt, etc., that’s cool and not too message-y. Add some Reese’s!

trickycooljParticipantooh! Reeses yum! I forget how classic Amerikana they are! Urban Outfitters is a great suggestion too, I often overlook it now that I’m getting closer to 30 than I want to admit. :)

2 Much WhineParticipantWe have good friends from Sweden, living in Italy and their daughters that age love Costco sized bags of skittles (even though they can be found in Europe). Other than that, I’m no help. Women remain a mystery to me regardless of their age. . . . .

JanSParticipanttricky…closer to 30? ummmm…you’re just a child – lolol…(says she who is closer to…uh…70 than she wants to admit…hehehe)

trickycooljParticipantHehe I know in the grand scheme of things 30 is hardly anything but boy the fresh out of college hires at work sure make me realize I’m not as hip and with the teen-early 20s crowd! :)

metrognomeParticipantI had no idea ‘trickycoolj’ is a German name; how do you pronounce it?
This post is 6 years old so it may be out of date, but they seem to recommend clothes and shoes and jelly beans. The idea of local t-shirts or sweatshirts seems good – easy to find, lightweight and easily packed.

trickycooljParticipantLOL @ Metrognome!
It’s Die Trickycoolj :)
For real though I’m constantly correcting my last name at work. That gave me a great laugh!!
And jelly bellys will be super fun! I remember once bringing those Warhead candies when they first came out for some family friends over there. Total hoot!!

desertdwellerParticipantHaben sie eine gute Reise! I concur with the above posters about American candy — who doesn’t love getting sweets from afar?!
Maybe a t-shirt from Cupcake Royale would also do the trick? Or the (in)famous West Seattle t-shirt from Capers!

annaeileenParticipantAmerican candy is always good but yes to American sweatshirts. When my nephew was growing up I outfitted him with Nintendo clothing (I worked in marketing and had lots of free stuff pre sarbanes oxley) and bought him Easy Street and Sonic Boom sweatshirts – he was born in Germany and still wears them! so yes to anything music and local for clothes.

KimberleyParticipantRide the S.L.U.T may be cool to them. If they’re football (soccer) fans, perhaps Sounders t-shirts. My younger cousins in the U.K. always appreciated random things like funky jewelry, fritos, oreos (although they’re pretty common over there now), grape kook-aid (no idea why), lucky charms, and similar randomness. Easy Street t-shirts may also be cool.

trickycooljParticipantWow they’re going to get an awesome birthday package from their cool American cousin!
And I owe it too, last year only one of their birthday cards made it. I still wonder if the other one is on the floor under machinery at the Westwood Post Office or the NSA confiscated it to make me look like an ass picking favorites between my twin cousins! LOL
