I looked at aerial views using Google and Bing maps that was within the area between 44th Ave SW to 41st Ave SW and SW Edmunds St to SW Oregon St. I counted almost 600 car parking spots within 1 block of Alaska Junction (SW Alaska St & California Ave SW). This does not include the hidden parking under Jefferson Square, or street parking along 42nd or 41st. My count may be off a little so treat it as an (under)estimate for now. I don’t have a count of pay vs free spots.

There are about 20 handicapped parking spots (~3%). The Junction’s parking map shows about 40 bike parking racks. Each bike rack can comfortably hold ~4 bikes…so that’s ~160 spots to lock up a bike. I created a map of bike racks using SDOT’s publicly accessible dataset here, if anyone wants to play with it:
https://data.seattle.gov/Transportation/West-Seattle-Bike-Racks-Alaska-Junction/uzip-4mjf
A bike corral sure would be nice to have, centrally located in Alaska Junction. One car parking spot can typically hold ~12 bikes. Yes, there’s work currently going on with SDOT to install a bike corral somewhere, and 1 car parking spot may be sacrificed. I’ll let you do the math to figure out how much car parking would be gone (spoiler: it’s much less than 1%).
My wife and I always walk to The Junction when we visit, which is ~1 mile each way for us. We spend a few days each week going to QFC during the evenings, and walk past the pay parking lot under Jefferson Square. I always see plenty of spots under there, so I don’t understand the issue with parking. Is the main problem that people don’t want to pay to park, or walk more than 100 feet after driving? I understand the issue for those with limited mobility due to the scarcity of handicapped parking spots, but not for anyone else.
So…
Would you like to see more bike parking available? How about some bike corrals? Please let the businesses know and send emails to info@wsjunction.org. I’m sure the business association would love to hear from you! ;-)
Just saw this on their FB page:
Greentree Animal Hospital was recently asked to care for 6 rescue dogs that were in need of medical care and some TLC. These adorable dogs are available for adoption. Please contact the clinic if interested.
We don’t know how to upload a photo, so please go to: https://www.facebook.com/greentreeanimalhospital.westseattle to see these cute pups.
A big thank you to Greentree for helping with these dogs.
We finally have a building! I’m looking for 1-2 more holistic practitioners for either people or animals (or both) to join a very special holistic clinic for both people and their animals in West Seattle opening in April. We have some amazing people on board and I’m hoping not just to share clients but also support and community! You would have your own business but share space and resources including reception help if interested. Please see below for more info.

Hi there, Ocean. I have a fail-safe hummus recipe that I’ll post on my FB page. And I haven’t made hummus in a while, so I’ll use this as an excuse! You’ll find it if you go to: https://www.facebook.com/TheKitchenImp
Great news. This is them for everyone else:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_order
https://www.votetocracy.com/blog/79/understanding-executive-orders-and-the-powers-they-grant
Are Executive Orders Constitutional?
If he is breaking the law, then they all broke the law. Why do you insist on only speaking about Obama when speaking of executive order? You obviously were fine with them when other presidents were doing it…so whats so different this time?
Things are not black and white…there is some gray in there. If the things that the Republican led House sends the Senate would be different, they would give them more consideration…but, no, they get things like doing away with the ACA..
No middle ground? I believe some of us already answered your original question….but you don’t want to take that answer…you just want it your way..
You might get in touch with the “DIY Bikes” folks. Last summer, they offered free bike tune ups at Youngstown on Sundays & seemed more than generous with their knowledge & time. You can run a search here on WSB to find out more, or visit their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/DIY-Bikes/526690160701064. Their FB site mentions an upcoming meeting of mechanics and bike enthusiasts at the Tool Library, March 6th, 6-9pm, http://www.wstoollibrary.org.
This is obviously a commercial versus a residential project, but I just thought I’d mention that the High Point Center has a ground source heat pump system. They might be able to provide you with some info about how it has been working since it was installed in 2009.

George, our Real Change guy, lost his wallet Monday at PCC with his entire rent money.
Could you help us help him replace the money? You’ll find George outside the Post Office most days.
He’s super nice and really has become a part of the daily post office customers and a friend of the coffeehouse. We just posted a story we wrote about him a couple of months ago on the Hotwire Facebook page. He lost $300, has received $75 in donations but would be awesome if folks could help us!
https://www.facebook.com/HotwireCoffee
He was also just in a Real Change film about homelessness and economic justice.

Dear Would-Be Citizen Arresters: Please take a deep breath. I can’t tell you how much I would hate to hear about another person being bitten, assaulted or worse while trying to detain a loose dog or scofflaw owner. As much as I hate them, it is not worth the potential consequences, including lawsuits.
mcmullek: As Mike points out Westcrest Park is technically in West Seattle. Over the past five years or so, there have been several other locations proposed, including the hill above the tennis courts east of Lincoln Park. For a recent discussion here on the blog, see https://westseattleblog.com/2013/10/how-will-you-be-asked-to-be-taxed-for-seattle-parks-and-what-would-the-fund-park-development-off-leash-law-enforcers/
If after reading that you still would like to get involved :) a good resource is Citizens for Off-Leash Areas, http://www.coladog.org.

Remodeling kitchen, and this won’t work in the new layout. I’m going to post on Craigslist soon but wanted to give my fellow WS neighbors a shot at a great deal on beautiful piece of fine furniture.

It’s a hammered iron and maple side table with two shelves and a cutting board top. It’s in very nice condition. The few marks on the top board could be made to disappear with a light sanding but as it sits, it just looks like it’s been worn in very lovingly. It’s 50″ long and 20″ deep and counter height.
Super functional beauty that will last many lifetimes.
Lists for $1570 now. Bought it new around 1998 or so for something right around that price.
If interested, post your email and I’ll send you pix. I’m looking for serious inquiries and asking $1000. Can deliver.
Different plate but … car thieves do sometimes switch plates.

JoB–It’s hilarious that you cite that article on the new GM CEO and instead of actually read it you seize upon a 100k difference in pay. That 100k is only a 6% difference and he got that extra 100k because he was not only the CEO but also the Chairman of GM. Further, she’s younger which means fewer years of experience. Because she’s younger she will likely get long term compensation and they haven’t declared all her short term compensations. At any rate the short term compensation is in stock and stock values go up and down. The value of the previous CEO’s stock may be worth more when he got it than the same number of shares are worth now. After she’s been on the job that stock may go back up and then she will be making more.
What you are engaging in is Confirmation Bias and you aren’t even smart enough to link to an article that actually confirms your bias. There is a reason she makes less and instead of seeing that you look only at the difference in initial salary.
Even if it turns out that she is paid significantly less I want to point out that work isn’t an entitlement. You get what you earn and if you don’t bargain well enough then you get less. She is responsible for demanding the pay she deserves. For all we know she bargained for less money in order to get something else like better benefits or more stock options down the road.
At any rate they haven’t even announced all her pay and instead of waiting until you have all the evidence you are jumping the gun because you think you’ve found something that confirms your bias.
