Listening to Grief Peer Support Groups @ Mama Be Well Healing Studio
Feb 23 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Grief Support Groups

Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.

These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

Scottish Country Dancing classes in West Seattle @ Fauntleroy Church
Feb 24 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.

The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.

Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”

Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”

The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

Looking for a quiet space to slow down this week?

As part of a citywide 40 Days of Prayer initiative happening across Seattle, a local Prayer Room will be open in West Seattle this week for self-guided reflection. The space is designed to be simple, peaceful, and accessible — whether you consider yourself religious, spiritual, unsure, or just in need of a few quiet minutes.

Visitors can move at their own pace through a series of interactive stations centered on themes like pausing, expressing gratitude, releasing worry, and holding hope for our city together. There is no formal program, no preaching, and nothing to sign up for. You don’t need to know how to pray. You’re welcome to simply sit, write, draw, reflect, or quietly take a breath before heading back into your day.

Morbidly Curious Book Club, February 2026 West Seattle meeting @ Great American Diner and Bar
Feb 26 @ 7:00 pm
‘Topdog/Underdog’ at ArtsWest, evening performances
Feb 26 @ 7:30 pm

Winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, “Topdog/Underdog” is a darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity and is Suzan-Lori Parks’ groundbreaking riff on the way we are defined by history. The play tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.

ArtsWest and The Hansberry Project have been co-producers since 2014. Founded in 2004, The Hansberry Project is a professional black theatre company dedicated to the artistic exploration of African American life, history and culture. Past co-productions include audience favorites “Clyde’s” by Lynn Nottage (2024) and “Sunset Baby” by Dominique Morriseau (2019). “Topdog/Underdog” marks the fifth collaboration between the two theater companies; each with Valerie Curtis-Newton in the role of director.

“Topdog/Underdog” is about the struggle to reach success in a system that is rigged. This drama packs a punch with as much comedy as it has intensity. A rooming house room the size of a boxing ring becomes a pressure cooker for the two brothers who share a past and are carving their own paths as they strive towards their dreams for the future. Director Valerie Curtis-Newton remarks, “The life of a dog in the fight is a life that breeds paranoia. The under dog is always watching their back and struggling to reach the top. The top dog gets to call the shots, but for how long? “Topdog/Underdog” puts the pain of that cycle under a microscope with the hope that in investigating it, we can learn to break it.”

“Topdog/Underdog” is the third production of ArtsWest’s 2025-2026 Season titled Between Us. The season features 5 bold contemporary plays that explore the invisible threads that bind us — the responsibilities we bear for one another, the debts of care we carry, and the lifelines we extend in moments of crisis. In TOPDOG/UNDERDOG, two brothers wrestle with what they owe one another whether it be a roof over their head, a cut of their paycheck, or a watchful eye while the play asks audiences to contemplate the systems of oppression in America and what we owe our communities to create change.

ArtsWest is at 4711 California SW. Tickets are available online here.

There is no formal program, no preaching, and nothing to sign up for. You don’t need to know how to pray. You’re welcome to simply sit, write, draw, reflect, or quietly take a breath before heading back into your day.

Online community meeting for Barton repaving in bus zone
Mar 2 @ 6:30 pm

People in the Westwood Village vicinity have received notice of an online community meeting about the upcoming work to repave SW Barton in the bus-layover zone, and that revealed the bus-reroute plan for the project – now expected to start in April – is already out. In short, SW Trenton will see most of the rerouted buses:

Route 21 to Westwood Village

Route 21 buses leaving Westwood Village (southbound) will turn from 35th Ave SW onto SW Trenton St.

The bus will continue traveling eastbound on SW Trenton St, with three more stops:

-SW Trenton St east of 35th Ave SW
-SW Trenton St at either 29th or 30th Ave SW
-SW Trenton St just west of 25th Ave SW, on the north end of Westwood Village

Rapid Ride C-Line to Westwood Village

C-Line buses will turn off SW Barton onto 35th Ave SW (northbound), then travel eastbound on SW Trenton St.

The bus will continue travelling eastbound on SW Trenton St, with three stops:

-35th Ave SW and SW Trenton St
-Between 29/30th Ave SW Trenton St
-The last stop will come after turning southbound on 25th Ave SW, just south of SW Henderson St.

Leaving Westwood Village on the Rapid Ride C-Line or Rt. 21

Catch the Rapid Ride C-Line or Rt. 21 bus toward downtown Seattle at the southbound bus stop on 25th Av SW just north of SW Barton St (at the southeast corner of Westwood Village):

(See the color-coded legend here.)

If you are driving a car in the area –

Roads will remain open for at least one lane at a time during construction. Access to driveways to the Westwood Village shopping center will remain open.

If you are walking or rolling on the sidewalk –

The sidewalk next to Roxhill Park will be closed during construction.

We first reported on the project in March of last year, when its environmental checklist appeared in a city bulletin. Those documents explained pipeline and peat-removal work that would be part of the project, which at the time was expected to happen last fall, repaving the longtime “layover” zone in concrete pavement meant to stand up better to heavy bus usage.

COMMUNITY MEETING: This is now set to be held online three weeks from tonight, at 6:30 pm Monday, March 2. Register here to get the link.

Scottish Country Dancing classes in West Seattle @ Fauntleroy Church
Mar 3 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Highland Park Way lane-conversion project online meeting
Mar 4 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

SDOT has scheduled an online public meeting March 4 for the most controversial West Seattle project on their drawing board, the plan to convert the outside downhill lane on the Highland Park Way hill to a multi-use path. The possibility of rechannelizing the hill – which was a busy detour route during the West Seattle Bridge closure – first came up in the 2010s, then went on hold in 2020, then turned up again in a city application for federal funding in 2022, and then moved onto the path toward finalization a year ago despite loud opposition. SDOT recently told WSB that construction is at least a year away; the department says it’ll have design updates at the March 4 meeting, which is scheduled to start at 5 pm, and will be at this Zoom link.
