About the early-morning police search in Highland Park, Puget Ridge

Logwatchers may have noticed a “scenes of violence” callout just before 3 am. Here’s the police summary of what that was about:

On 7-14-21 at about 0250 hours, an unknown male entered a business in the 1600 block of SW Holden St and requested the employee call 911 because he had accidentally shot himself. The subject then fled the business, got into his vehicle, and fled the area. Responding officers observed the vehicle leaving and followed it to the area of 17 Ave SW / SW Graham St, where the subject parked the vehicle and fled into the greenbelt area. An extensive area check was conducted, but the subject was not located. A handgun was observed inside the locked vehicle, which was impounded to the processing room.

UPDATE: Man injured in West Seattle Junction hit-run collision

10:02 PM: Firefighters and police are at 45th and Glenn right now on the west side of The Junction, tending to an injured motorcyclist. Witnesses say he was the victim of a hit-run driver. Medics have told dispatch that the victim is a. 46-year-old man, conscious and alert, possibly with a fracture.

(Texted photo)

10:19 PM: The victim is being taken to the hospital.

10:27 PM: One neighbor who was at the scene says, “From talking to neighbors no one got a good look at the car but heard it dragging its bumper. Big props to a nurse practitioner neighbor who evaluated the hit motorcyclist before aid arrived.”

10:43 PM: Added a photo of the bike – technically a scooter rather than motorcycle.

WEST SEATTLE BRIDGE: Updates Wednesday (and next week)

Your next chance for updates on the West Seattle Bridge and related projects/issues is noon tomorrow, when the Community Task Force meets online. Here’s the link to watch; here’s the agenda. Updates will include the 60 percent repair design milestone, the latest low-bridge access stats, and West Marginal Way (still awaiting the bike-lane decision). The meeting is scheduled from noon to 2 pm; if you can’t watch, just one week later, SDOT promises bridge updates at its community meeting (5:30 pm July 21st). P.S. The West Seattle Transportation Coalition, which usually includes bridge updates at its monthly meeting, will NOT be meeting this month – instead of its regular meeting, which would have been on July 22nd, they’re urging everyone to attend SDOT’s meeting.

From White Center Now: Celebration of Life this Saturday for Tara Eckman Scott

On Monday, on our partner site White Center Now, we reported on the death of 51-year-old Tara Eckman Scott, proprietor of White Center’s Taradise Café. Since she lived in West Seattle and had previously worked at the long-gone, long-beloved Charlestown Café, some WSB readers suggested we report her passing here too. A memorial has been growing outside the Taradise, and tonight her family has announced a public celebration of life in the café parking lot for 4 pm Saturday (July 17th). The announcement also says they’re accepting donations (via Venmo) to keep the café going; as we noted in an earlier story on WCN, it has been closed for more than two weeks after a problem described as a basement flood.

FOLLOWUP: Admiral gas-line break investigation

(WSB photo, Monday)

One day after a construction crew broke a 4-inch gas line at California/Lander, closing the street and evacuating nearby businesses for five-plus hours (WSB coverage here), an investigation is under way. We followed up today with Puget Sound Energy, which provides natural-gas service in our area. We asked, first, why it took so long to shut off the gas after Monday’s break. PSE spokesperson Jarrett Tomalin said, “When our crews are called to an incident, each one may have its own unique factors to obtain shutdown. Typically, we’ll have our mapping team determine the best option for shutting down the gas leak to ensure safety, while also ensuring the fewest number of customers are impacted. The shutdown process in yesterday’s incident was complex, as it required other utilities to cut power, and heavy equipment to excavate the shutdown location.” Our other question: Who’s investigating? Tomalin’s reply: “This incident will be investigated by PSE, the locating service, and the contractor responsible for the damage to PSE’s gas line, with the UTC being notified of the gas line incident.” (That’s the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.) For some, the break’s effects lasted into today; one nearby apartment resident noted in a comment that their building’s gas service was affected, which meant no hot water for washing and bathing,

WHALES: Transient orcas, northbound

Transient killer whales – they’re the seal-eating type rather than salmon-eating resident orcas – should be in view again soon. Thanks to Kersti Muul for the tip – she says they’re emerging from Colvos Passage west of Vashon Island, headed northbound. Since they’re on the other side of Puget Sound, you’ll want to use binoculars. Let us know if you see them!

UPDATE: Sewer break fouls Puget Sound off Beach Drive

(Photo from @quapet via Twitter)

3:10 PM: Thanks for the tip and photo. That signage went up at Cormorant Cove Park in the 3700 block of Beach Drive SW – and we just got this Seattle Public Utilities notification explaining why:

Today Seattle Public Utilities responded to a sewer overflow due to a broken side sewer located along Beach Dr near Cormorant Cove. As a result, beaches in the area will be closed to water activities, including Cormorant Cove as well as the beach access at Beach Dr. SW/63rd Ave SW in West Seattle.

Staff will sample the water and work with Public Health-Seattle & King County and Seattle Parks Department to determine when the area can be safely reopened. SPU will provide an update when we have more information. Seattle Public Utilities is working with the property owner to ensure a timely repair of the side sewer.

If you find flooding or sewer backups, please report them to the SPU 24/7 Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800.

5:56 PM: We went down to the shore to check the extent of the signage. It continues northward at Constellation Park, beyond 63rd/Beach:

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Carjacking investigation

If you wondered what the big police response at 10th/Henderson [map] in Highland Park at noontime was all about – it was related to a reported armed carjacking. After that happened near 2nd SW and SW Michigan (by the 1st Avenue South Bridge), police tracked the car (in our photo above) up the Highland Park Way hill and southward to 10th/Henderson, where everybody bailed out of it. At least one person – possibly the armed woman who was believed to be at the wheel – was reported to have fled in a second vehicle; two others were on foot after abandoning the car, and police arrested one suspected accomplice found nearby.

The investigation is being turned over to robbery detectives.

WEST SEATTLE BOOKS: New edition of ‘Hiking Washington’s History’

This is perfect weather for hiking – and with the help of a West Seattle author’s newly revised book, you can not only enjoy trails’ beauty, but also explore their history. Writer/historian Judy Bentley‘s “Hiking Washington’s History” is now out in a second edition. She tells WSB:

The second edition of Hiking Washington’s History, with co-author and prolific guide book writer Craig Romano, has been published this month by the University of Washington Press, which also published the first edition in 2010.

The second edition includes 12 new historic hikes, including a trail in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. The second edition has many photographs and maps, a timeline of trails, sidebars, and detailed hike narratives. I will be giving a talk with the Southwest Seattle Historical Society in September.

Bentley is a longtime West Seattle resident, South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) instructor, and past president of SWSHS. She says you can get her book at Paper Boat Booksellers in Morgan Junction (6040 California SW).

DEVELOPMENT: Preview ‘early design’ before review meeting Thursday for 4448 California SW

The newest redevelopment proposal for The Junction goes to the Southwest Design Review Board in an online meeting this Thursday. It’s a first look at 4448 California SW, in the Early Design Guidance phase, so the proposal focuses on options for the building’s size, shape, and placement on site, not its final appearance. It’s proposed for 96 apartments across six stories over ground-floor commercial space, no offstreet parking proposed (none is required), on a parcel zoned for up to 75 feet, currently holding the commercial building that’s rented to Doll Parts Collective and a mortgage lender. Here’s the meeting packet by architects Atelier Drome:

(You can also see the meeting packet here.) Information on how to attend/watch/listen to the meeting at 5 pm Thursday (July 15th), and how to comment on the project’s design, can be found here.

VIDEO: Waterparks @ Easy Street Records, as store relaunches live shows, launches loft bar

Another sign that West Seattle life is getting back to something resembling pre-pandemic normal – in-store shows at Easy Street Records in The Junction! Tonight ESR presented Waterparks, the rock trio from Houston, which had fans lining up long before the show, and singing along during it.

They’re on tour in support of their newest album “Greatest Hits.” Easy Street’s Matt Vaughan told us the relaunch show was one “for the kids.” But his record store/café/music venue has something new for the grownups too:

Kelsey and Patrick were in the loft tending the new Easy Street bar, which has been open for some sneak peeks lately. One more spin of Easy Street news – as of last weekend the shop’s gone back to pre-pandemic hours, 9 am-9 pm Mondays through Saturdays, 9 am-7 pm Sundays.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Noontime catalytic-converter theft; abandoned bicycle

Two reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:

CATALYTIC CONVERTER STOLEN ON THE STREET: Jeff saw it happen:

I witnessed a catalytic converter theft on Alki this afternoon.

At approximately 12:00 PM, I was jogging down the hill at California Way SW leading to Harbor Ave SW (near Marination Ma Kai) when I saw a man underneath a parked silver Toyota Prius. Another man was standing next to the car. They were both white, in their late 20s or early 30s, and wearing backward baseball caps and undershirts. A woman in a parked silver Nissan Pathfinder without rear or front plates was looking back from the driver’s seat at the 2 men. After a few seconds, they had retrieved the Prius’s catalytic converter and ran toward the parked SUV, and then all 3 drove off. I took a picture of the Nissan and attached it.

Hopefully I got the make/model of the getaway car correct, would appreciate input from anyone who might be better at identifying cars from suboptimal pictures. I filed a police report and am awaiting a case number.

Jeff also left a note for the Prius’s owner and has connected with them.

ABANDONED BICYCLE: Mason saw this abandoned bicycle both days this weekend:

There was a bike left on the side of street on Holgate & 44th … (Sunday) it was still around, maybe someone stole it, then left it? Any reports of a missing old blue road bike?

ELECTION 2021: 13 questions answered in West Seattle by 9 people who want to be Seattle’s next mayor

(WSB photo. From left – Lorena González, James Donaldson, Jessyn Farrell, Colleen Echohawk, Andrew Grant Houston, WSJA executive director Lora Radford, Lance Randall, Bruce Harrell, Casey Sixkiller, Don Rivers)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

When nine of the 15 candidates for Seattle mayor sat side by side for an hour and a half at noontime Saturday, it wasn’t just the only pre-primary forum devoted to West Seattleites’ questions – it was also their first in-person forum of the campaign. With days to go until voting starts, they had appeared in dozens of forums, but all online.

So though the questions were serious, it was almost a festive atmosphere, unlike the more-typical mood by the time campaigning gets down to the wire.

Bruce Harrell joked that he wore shorts in the Zoom-call spirit. Lance Randall handed out custom-labeled mini-bottles of hand sanitizer. Casey Sixkiller and Jessyn Farrell asked to borrow scratch paper, confessing they were out of practice for toting supplies to in-person events.

Along with those four, the forum at the Senior Center of West Seattle featured James Donaldson, Colleen Echohawk, Lorena González, Andrew Grant Houston, and Don Rivers. WSB co-presented it with the West Seattle Junction Association, which streamed it live on Instagram’s IGTV while we streamed to YouTube. Our videographer for the occasion, Edgar Riebe of West Seattle-based Captive Eye Media, also recorded it, and here’s the video, followed by our summary:

UPDATE: 5 hours of street closures, evacuations after gas-line break in Admiral District

10:29 AM: Seattle Fire is just arriving in the 2700 block of California SW for a potential natural-gas problem. The logged address is the construction site toward the north end of the block. They’re blocking California SW so avoid the area for a while.

10:34 AM: Puget Sound Energy is on the way; firefighters told dispatch that the break appears to be “by an excavator.” They’re monitoring air status in nearby buildings including Safeway.

10:50 AM: Our crew is there and sending photos. The California closure starts further north, as shown in our top photo – in the 2600 block. If you leave the Safeway parking lot, for example, you’ll only be allowed to turn north. The closure extends to Stevens (the PCC corner).

10:56 AM: PSE has arrived.

11:05 AM: The incident commander just told dispatch that PSE says this is a four-inch east-west line and “this will be a prolonged incident,” so they’re going to have City Light shut down power nearby.

11:17 AM: Firefighters just told dispatch they’re evacuating Safeway. (We just called PCC and so far they’re stlll open, as is West Seattle Runner [WSB sponsor] just up the block.)

11:42 AM: Not resolved yet. And for those who’ve asked, yes, that’s a TV helicopter.

12:04 PM: SFD says “all affected businesses and residences have been evacuated.”

12:43 PM: Our crew went back to the scene for updates. The leak can still be heard, so it’s not shut off yet. Meantime, as a commenter mentioned, some power’s been cut in the area. Some businesses including Safeway (whose staff was lunching in the parking lot) remain closed.

1:02 PM: We talked with SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo at the scene. He says the air quality in the area is generally OK and evacuations were done as a precaution more than anything. PSE is still working on getting the broken line shut down safely. No estimate yet on how much longer this is likely to last.

1:23 PM: A commenter asked about West Seattle High School. We went over to the office; they told us the students were sent home.

1:55 PM: SFD is swapping out crews. We’re headed back for another update.

2:48 PM: The hissing from the break is quieter than it originally was, and SFD confirms that PSE has “reduced” the leak but not yet stopped it.

3:38 PM: SFD says PSE has stopped the leak and everything is reopening. Our crew should be back in the area in a few minutes to verify.

3:50 PM: Safeway, for one, has reopened. But the streets are not yet open again, our crew reports.

4:10 PM: Metro has resumed regular routing, which means the streets are back open.

BIZNOTE: Bastille Day at The Brocante Beach House

Extra chance for you to visit The Brocante Beach House (WSB sponsor) on Alki this week – the shop will be open Wednesday (July 14th), noon-8 pm, for its first annual of Bastille Day. Here’s the announcement from proprietor Kim Medica:

We will have refreshments, macaroons by Black Magic Sweets, a raffle drawing for a fabulous French-inspired basket of goodies valued at over $150, and much more! Each purchase on Wednesday 7/14 gives you one ticket entry. The winner will be announced at 8 pm Wednesday. Need not be present to win.

ROAD-WORK REMINDER: Southbound Delridge Way closure starts this week

That’s southbound Delridge Way SW just south of SW Holden, and we wanted to remind you tonight that SDOT says it’ll be closed for about two weeks starting as soon as tomorrow morning. The southbound closure between Holden and Trenton is part of the ongoing work to prepare for the RapidRide H Line; while crews have this blocked off, they will “demolish and rebuild” that section of the road. 35th SW is the recommended detour route between Holden and Trenton. (Here’s reroute information for Metro Route 120.) Work hours are 7 am to 7 pm, but the southbound closure will continue during the non-work hours too. Other continuing road closures include SW Thistle and SW Henderson on the east side of Delridge.

WEST SEATTLE ART: Girl Scout Troop 41169’s project, meant to ‘bring you a little joy’

(1st two photos by WSB; after that, courtesy Troop 41169)

New art outside the Highland Park Improvement Club! This was in the works long before last month’s fire, and it has just been installed. It’s the “Bronze Award” project for the 5th graders of Girl Scout Troop 41169 – an “inclusion fence” along the SW Holden side of HPIC.

The project started with an idea for a mural in The Junction – but that didn’t work out (though it may eventually become a reality due to recent interest), so instead, the Scouts pivoted to this idea. Noirin Lynch sent us more photos and her troop’s explanation:

After 9 months of emails, phone calls, Zoom meetings, and painting sessions, we have finally completed our Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn. We are so excited to share our artwork with West Seattle residents and hope as they drive in and out of our community they are reminded of all the beauty and strength that our diversity provides. We were inspired to celebrate diversity and inclusiveness after watching our community, our city, and our nation become so divided this past year after the death of George Floyd.

Our troop started working on our Bronze project in 2020 and we have learned so much about working as a team, being responsible, and being resilient through the process. After our idea for a mural was rejected dozens of times, we were challenged to think creatively and persevere.

In the end, the Highland Park Improvement Club turned out to be a perfect match for us. They actively work to represent diversity and foster inclusion through all the work they do as an organization and this is exactly what our troop wants to celebrate. We are so grateful for their positivity and willingness to support our troop and we appreciate the invaluable role HPIC plays in lifting up our community. So as West Seattle residents are sitting in traffic trying to get on or off of our little “island” our troop and HPIC hopes our inclusion fence art brings you a little joy. Remember it is our diversity that makes our nation so unique and we are better for it. Differences in race, religion, gender identity, abilities, and politics should be a source of celebration, not divisiveness.

Congratulations to the Scouts – in the photo immediately above, front row L-R Vivienne, Akemi, Natalie, Harper; back row L-R Lena, Grace, Bereket, Ella. You can see their work at 1116 SW Holden.

Camp Second Chance likely to add residents, director tells Community Advisory Committee

 |   Myers Way | West Seattle news

A potential expansion and a personnel shortage were part of what the Camp Second Chance Community Advisory Committee heard about this afternoon.

Camp Second Chance (9701 Myers Way S.) is the only city-sanctioned tiny-house encampment in West Seattle, close to the southeast city-limit line. The all-volunteer Community Advisory Committee meets monthly – currently, online – to hear updates and ask questions about camp operations. Meetings have usually been on first Sundays, but this month’s meeting was pushed back a week because of the holiday.

CAMP REPORT: Director Scott Harris (who is a LIHI employee) said CSC currently has 51 residents – 15 women, 36 men – and LIHI is looking to expand, adding up to 20 people (other tiny-house encampments, he said, are being eyed for expansion as well). The camp has space, he said, though this would mean adding tiny houses.
