I can see 20 mins or so, given that ANY domestic situation can turn on a dime. What might a higher priority be? Burglary in process? Sure. Gun violence? Yup. Not much else in my mind is more volatile than a domestic disturbance.

I feel you, mark47. Maybe the police are encouraging everyone to diffuse things like this with a weapon. Cuz, you know, nothing says deescalation of tense domestic issues than someone brandishing a gun.

Campbell’s Tomato soup is always a plus! :) I guess I’m a purist..white bread for me, although I have varied the cheese. Usually medium to sharp cheese, but mix some gruyere in at times. I have used pepper jack cheese in the past on a rustic white bread I cut myself…pretty yummy..

I’ll start with a personal favorite:

Hello. Wondering if you have found anyone yet for this position? I am a SAHM who is at home all day with my 18 month old daughter and then with my seven year old son when he gets out of school. What are the hours for this? Would love to discuss further with you if you are still looking for someone. Thanks, Laura (aitoyujo@gmail.com)

Here’s and elevator company’s take on what generally happens/what to do, regarding elevators during power outage:

    http://tinyurl.com/nbnheb3

As I suspected, this seems to suggest that generator or battery back-ups are usually available, and take over.

I also found the Police Blotter, apparently from a small Town, that described an elevator being lowered by hand, during an outage.

It would definitely be interesting to find out what SFD’s procedure is.

Yup, I pretty much agree with you Wake.

If it was up to me every home loan, regardless of credit history, would require at least a 10% down payment. Would that keep some people as renters for longer? Probably. But that’s a trade-off for price stability and protection from brokers pushing unfair loans targeting the poor and unsophisticated.

Posting an update from funkietoo, who is unable to Log-in here:

Hi everyone, just a quick up date on tomorrow’s lunch.

West Seattle Christian Church has been thoughtful and generous enough to let us use their Community Center kitchen tomorrow morning. If you would like to bring food and/or help prep, we will be there by 11 am and leaving at 11:45 am for the meal site. Their address is: 4400 42nd Ave SW. (Mike, attached is a photo of the building–are you able to paste it into the WSB post?)

    Our menu currently consists of:

Turkey Salad sandwiches (or can be eaten as a salad w/o bread)

    Green bean casserole

    Big tray of dressing

    Tray of sweet potatoes

    Pumpkin cheesecake cupcakes

    Two pumpkin pies

We will be serving about 15 people tomorrow. Thanks to everyone that is participating so far and to those that we may see tomorrow.

    Cheers, All of us.

Couldn’t figure how to post funkietoo’s pic here, so here is a link to Google Maps, for the address:http://tinyurl.com/py5pzn5

The Street View image there looks different than what funkietoo e-mailed me. Perhaps hers was a side view?

We stopped in for a meal at Credo in the Junction right after they opened and i have to admit i was not impressed.

That was then.. this is now.

their menu has changed a bit from the first time we stopped in.. they still have wood fired pizza and some incredible vegetarian choices i didn’t remember seeing before..

Tonight we had a shrimp cocktail, a clam pizza and polenta and every dish was original and incredibly good.

if i were to be picky.. i would suggest that you ask to spend more for more shrimp when you order the cocktail.. because you will want more.. they are that good.

the shrimp are drizzled with an avocado cream and something a little spicier.. and i think sprinkled with what might be salt and pepper but might be something more… yummy..

and the polenta.. i think cooked.. then baked in the pizza oven .. then topped in the back kitchen with just the right blend of spices sauteed onions and mushrooms and topped with more of those sauces…

    i couldn’t finish it.. so i asked for a box…

i am really looking forward to lunch tomorrow.

if you haven’t been in there for a while..

    you should try it again.

in 2013 there were 32 officers killed by gunfire in the United States.. 2 of them accidental shootings

    http://www.odmp.org/search/year?year=2013

this year there have been 42.. 2 of those accidental shootings

    http://www.odmp.org/search/year

it’s impossible to accurately count the number of gun related deaths attributed to the police in the line of duty in the United States because there are no federal statistics kept…

yup.. none.. let that sink in for just a moment…

and then thank the NRA who thinks keeping a database of shootings of any kind might actually alert the American public to the danger of unlimited numbers of firearms…

We know exactly how many officers were killed in 2013 by gunfire.. but we do not have an accurate count of how many citizens were killed by police in the line of duty…

it turns out the best tally is actually on a facebook page.. which reports 754 fatalities by officer in the last half of 2013.. 1750 to date since then.. that’s 996 this year alone.

    https://www.facebook.com/KilledByPolice

there are others where you can get a look at the details behind those numbers

    http://www.fatalencounters.org/

    http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/

    http://regressing.deadspin.com/were-compiling-every-police-involved-shooting-in-americ-1624180387

    all links from this article

    http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/another-much-higher-count-of-police-homicides/

and all requiring significant digging to find actual counts….

from Wikipedia… the number of justifiable homicides by officer in the United States averages 400 yr

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_killings_by_law_enforcement_officers_in_the_United_States

For the years of 2013 and 2014 in Canada wiki list 17 incidents

That there is a disparity in those figures.. even if you adjust them for population… is an understatement of vast proportions.

We clearly have a problem.. not just with the way that our police force interacts with it’s citizenry but with the authoritarian manner in which we approach policing… and it’s inevitable corollary… incarceration.

isn’t it time we acknowledged that problem and worked to fix it.

Personally, i liked officer friendly much better.

We ordered from Munchery last night, to be delivered between 5-6. We called about 6:30 when it hadn’t arrived and were also given a credit. It arrived around 6:45, they had some sort of van problems. Prior to having a baby this wouldn’t have been an issue at all, but now we are on a bit of a schedule. The food was delicious and we will definitely be ordering from them again. We also had the local green salad with chevre (YUM!!!), the tortilla soup, and one of the pasta salads. It was DELICIOUS!

wakeflood: My Japanese Shun knives are being kept perfectly razor sharp by my electric sharpener, just like the German Messermeister and Wüstof knives that sit beside them in the drawer. Japanese steel may be somewhat harder than metals used in Western knives. But the cutting angles of modern Santoku or Gyutou style knives are perfectly at home in any quality home sharpener.

Wouldn’t surprise me. I’m getting to the point where I’m losing track of which accounts go to which debit cards – as I’ve had 4 hacking events on 3 accounts, requiring new cards being issued on each. Yup, 12 new cards in the last 3 months.

Jan, they actually do something similar in South America. The largest tarantula in the world, Theraphosa blondi, attains a leg span of up to 12 inches. The natives lure these out of their burrows, tie the legs together over their backs, and roast them wrapped in banana leaves. When the feast is finished, the inch-long fangs that remain are used as toothpicks. YUM. (I’m kidding – an arachnologist acquaintance experienced this and said it was quite disgusting.)

My cat does love his eight-legged treats, though. I try to rescue his prey when I can, but often I can hear the dreaded crunching before I can get there…

Extrapolating Danny W’s very unfortunate experience into a deduction that police “ignore” or “allow” these crimes is not accurate (for one thing, not a SOUL seems to have noted that it was Saturday night, during the windstorm, with 50,000 people out of power around the city and SPD involved in trying to block streets with downed wires, etc.) … for seven years now we’ve read reports, listened to scanner calls, published Crime Watch reports, read thousands of comments, and yup, they could do better. But they don’t “ignore” or “allow” them as a policy. Anyway, I just jumped in to share this new link as certainly this has gotten the Chief’s attention.

Compulsory voting with the intent to fix democracy is akin to Johnathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal;” democracy will be “fixed” because the autocrats ate it up.

    Define Republic

    Define Democracy

If a democratic republic is what a more perfect union would look like in this day and age, the constitution is a good road map. In it, it suggests autonomy and equality rather than despots forcing institutions on the people. Although it has been manipulated along the way, there are some valuable precepts of freedom in there. If the citizens don’t vote, the government loses legitimacy. Maybe that time has come.
