Yup. And we have two. One – a standing Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines that didn’t exist and wasn’t funded – see Shay’s Rebellion – at our founding.

And two, a standing National Guard which wasn’t created until the 1900’s, and had existed as state-regulated militias from the 1700’s until they were officially connected to the national military structure in the 1930’s.

Both quite well funded – to the tune of $800B a year to protect us from enemies both external and internal.

Yep! It’s happening! The couple months planned meet-up of WSB Forum Members Picnic, down at West Seattle’s own, beautiful, Lincoln Park!!

Hotdogs, and soda pop/water will be provided, other than that, it’s Potluck, so there should be plenty of food to go around. So, please come, even if all you bring is YOU!

If you are an introvert, don’t worry! (Seriously) I have talked to several Forum Members over the years, including some that have become friends, that consider themselves introverted, even though around the right crowd, which this is, they might seem like the Life of the Party. So, come on by, even if for just a little while, and we’ll all be extroverted introverts together!

Our Shelter, #1, (of course!) is near the south end of the Park, (nearest the Ferry Dock)

Here’s a tinyurl of the Google Map:

    http://tinyurl.com/nypp2ex

Annnnnd one to the Parks Page showing the Shelter:

    http://tinyurl.com/ketvxvt

Metro Rapid Ride “C”, southbound, stops at Rose St. right in front of the Park northbound, I believe, stops almost directly across the street

For those driving; please remember to NOT leave any valuables in your car. Lincoln Park is a beloved gem, but like any such Park, has a decades long history of car break-ins. Also, wipe that GPS thingy suction cup mark off the windshield, which the presence of has led thieves to break-in hoping the GPS is under the seat.

Jay Dee, yup, something’s gotta’ give or this won’t get solved.

I’m all for the corps and uber rich coughing up their fair share, of course.

My hope is that we can craft an income tax proposal that gives folks like you enough confidence that any future tax increases have a reasonable threshold and require voter input to change. That’s still a tight window given the propensity for taxes to get voted down but at least we have a stable mechanism that doesn’t put a disproportional weight on property taxes.

Yup, JoB, it’s all about image, not substance. Remember when the Bella Abzug’s of the world got respect for their intelligence and grit and actually moved the needle for women?

Now, the R’s are looking for the photogenic airheads who couldn’t put forth a cogent argument if their life depended on it.

Palin, Bachmann, Hasselbeck, the faces on Faux News, the list grows every day.

But it sells. Unfortunately, it sells…

this morning i realized that one of my most significant political biases had faded away to nothing .. there was a time when given a choice between a male and a female candidate.. i would preference gender over party…

yup.. i admit it. i indulged in sexist behavior..

that didn’t change because i thought it was wrong to be sexist.. to preference women in public office over men…

but because the political stance of what was once the moderate Republican choice.. women.. seems to have changed.

Republican women now stand with Republican men against social issues that disproportionately affect women.. like fair pay.

    http://news.yahoo.com/why-republican-women-voted-against-equal-pay-214201211.html

and if you look at the noise from the campaign trail.. it only goes downhill from there.

This is happening at a time when women are becoming far more effective in Congress… in spite of limited support from Republican Women in Congress.. Female legislators are actually putting together bipartisan coalitions to pass legislation even in this do-nothing Congress…

which btw is how i personally defend my personal bias towards female candidates.. for the most part, they are pragmatic legislators who are accustomed to facing significant resistance to their proposals and as a result they tend to work harder to find common goals.

in my not so humble opinion.. getting something done.. no matter how small.. always trumps political pie in the sky tomorrow grandstanding…

    but back to the topic…

the Washington Post weighed in on the dearth of electable female candidates in the Republican Party

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/monkey-cage/wp/2014/09/29/why-the-republican-party-doesnt-have-more-female-candidates/

and an article in Roll Call did the same

    http://atr.rollcall.com/house-gop-will-focus-on-female-recruits-for-2014/

Even the Republican party has realized they have a problem fielding female candidates that women voters will respond to.. and has created a program to actively recruit candidates.

    unfortunately, it hasn’t been successful.

is the lack of candidates the problem or the party’s insistence on playing political football instead of creating legislation?

US news seem to think it’s the party. They say

Republican women fight an uphill battle against the policies of their own party…

    http://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2014/09/10/republican-women-struggle-to-secure-partys-future

i tend to agree with them. I believe women are far less likely to preference a female candidate over a party candidate because in their rush to field female candidates to counteract what they saw as the female vote the Republican party didn’t bother to seek excellence in their candidates..

which reinforced the public perception that the road to success for a female politician clearly lies though the Democratic party….

Is it because they prioritize appearance over substance? Maybe. They have certainly fielded female candidates whose appearance was more appealing to male candidates and conservative women….

but then.. the democrats are more into appearances these days than substance too… so that can’t be the whole story.

whatever.. and i’m cool with those size then feet they planted into my feminist leanings.

i don’t assume that that pretty face has any substance behind it…

not even if it’s a female face.

A cowboy named Budd was overseeing his herd in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust

The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes , RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?”

Budd looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, Why not?”

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his computer, connects it to his smartphone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Within seconds, he receives an email that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”

“That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” says Budd.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then Budd says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?”

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?”

“You’re an aide in the Obama Administration”, says Budd.

“Wow! That’s correct,” says the yuppie, “but how did you guess that?”

“No guessing required.” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than I you are; and you don’t know a thing about how working people make a living – or about cows, for that matter. This is a herd of sheep…

Now give me back my dog.”

mark47, et al, I certainly get the apprehension of many on this thread about supporting heavy industry going forward. I’m torn on it as well, though I come down on the side of trying to find balance both economically and environmentally, as I see benefits to having a diverse economic base. (I remember how hammered we were during the dot com bust in the early aughts and it wasn’t pretty.) It would have been even worse, if we didn’t have some of the other industries you mentioned in the region.

Having said that, my gut cringes when I see new examples every day of what we’re doing to our environment – sea star dieoff being a possible canary in the coal mine? – and I want to find ways to leverage our economic diversity into the cleanest/greenest possible directions.

In other words, every functional offset we can make to reduce impacts and encourage green industry growth – even at the expense of currently extant heavy industry – is what I’d like to pursue. Some good steps have been made already but they won’t continue without keeping pressure on the entities who need to do the changing. And that’s just how this stuff has to work, it seems?

Look at energy extraction. That stuff is going to kill every damn thing on the planet if we don’t rein it in and soon. But it’s just too lucrative for them to keep doing it unless we demand different. And yet, green industries are there for the taking, some of them already profitable, many that look like they can get there with support. Would I rather have THOSE products being produced locally and EXPORTED? Yup. Having a viable shipping port nearby would help make costs more competitive. But I digress.

Are communities naturally NIMBY? Yup. Do we ask for irrational things to happen on our behalf? All the time. Does industry adapt? Sometimes. Die? Certainly. What fate does Seattle have as top line cargo shipping port? Can’t tell you and frankly, neither can the port. They hope so but some of this isn’t under their control. What happens if they spend this money – OUR money – and the ships DON’T come? Or in too small numbers to make it pencil? That’s not so farfetched that it shouldn’t be factored into our thinking.

So, that was one rambling, long-winded way to say, just because people grumble and get emotional about this stuff doesn’t mean we can’t find something approaching win/win in this scenario. I’m holding out for it.
