I think polygamy is illegal because some believe significant psychological harm comes from it. Marrying relatives is illegal I think because of the increased risk of creating children with significant genetic defects.
It would be interesting to read the science on polygamy itself; I couldn’t find anything that was divorced from the nutty religion and forced marriages. And how come it’s usually multiple wives and not multiple husbands?
I have days where I wonder why anybody would want one spouse, let alone several, though.

RonMParticipantHusky’s has been one of my WS favorites for many decades. I know that businesses need to please their customers and make them happy. On the other hand it is a private business and has been super successful for more years than most WS’rs have been alive. If they want to close at 7, be forewarned the next time and get there on time. I don’t think you’d hurt anyone’s feelings if you couldn’t get over it and go somewhere else.
May 20, 2008 at 8:02 am #624670TrickParticipantHouse,
I believe the way the Supreme court spelled it out (Texas vs Lawrence) is about “consent”.
So Rick Santorum immediately talked about Incest,Polygamy,Adultery as being accepted as long as there is consent.
It’s a good argument for the right, no doubt.
However, the Polygamists (who oppose same sex marriage) can’t necessarily argue too well that a 15 yr old girl is consensual with a 55 or 65 yr old man who HE chooses to be as his wife. Their argument is based on religious beliefs rather than two consenting adults.

WSBKeymasterI’ve said previously that it’s OK to answer a reader-rec request if you’re a business as long as you clearly identify yourself (no “Hey! I hear Company XX is great!” when you are Company XX, which has happened), at least as long as the concept doesn’t get abused (e.g. we would watch closely for a request and reply from the same IP address), but this seems pretty aboveboard – TR

May 20, 2008 at 5:18 am #624669TheHouseMemberWrong, JT. It wasn’t meant to fire anyone up. It was meant to provoke thought. If you think the debate over dependents is radical, just read the link below. It’s already being tested by disabled people. Give it 15-20 years and it will be a topic of debate.
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9A05EED61339F93BA15750C0A967948260
RS261, defining marriage is at the core of the debate so it is very relevant. If you believe that this is discriminatory based on sexual orientation, then I’d like to ask you a few questions:
1) Why is polygamy illegal? It is marriage between consenting adults, albeit more than two. Why should someone be discriminated against if they choose to have multiple spouses as long as they are consenting adults?
2) Why shouldn’t relatives be allowed to marry if over the age of 18? As long as they are consenting adults, why should we discriminate against them?
The above are examples of discrimination based on “sexual orientation”.
May 20, 2008 at 4:47 am #587001Topic: Stimulus Check?
in forum Open DiscussionJiggersMemberOur government sucks arse so bad, I saw on the news the other night that some of us may not get the checks in until July now, and will be notified by mail if yours was one of the lucky ones that happened to be caught up in a glitch problem. If you got your check by mail only, please post here if you’ve received it.

WesMemberSo you created this post to point out that the church has hypocrites? Does it really need to be said? Don’t we already know this? Are there not hypocrites outside of the church too?
Understand I think this is sick and wrong and should be discussed under a broader banner of protecting our children from these kind of sickos.
I think all it has proven that all people are sinful.
Thank you Jan for the explanation.

TheVelvetBulldogMemberHi Jan, how are you doing? I was almost felled by the smell of yeasty goodness coming from a Specialtys bakery downtown this morning! I’m sort of amazed I was able to resist.
.
Did you hear (this was from a while ago) that someone actually brought a lawsuit against Hersheys for making the town smell like chocolate? Because the smell was pervasive, it was considered an invasive toxin or some such nonsense. You know what? Give me chocolate over rotting fish (under the WS bridge) diesel bus fumes (everywhere) and paper mills (Tacoma) any day!!!

JoB:
I know Arianna is not your favorite, but I think you’ll like this article.
This is my favorite part: “Blitzer asked Clinton about what it’s been like having Chelsea on the trail campaigning with her. Clinton, choking up, replied: “Well, it’s one of the most incredibly gratifying experiences of my life, as a person and as a mother. I get very emotional. She is an exceptional person, and she’s worked so hard, and she’s done such a good job that I’m just filled with pride every time I look at her.”
And just as Hillary started tearing up, I realized I was too. This has been an election where, even more than usual, the personal and the political have been constantly overlapping. And my feelings as I watched that interview were no exception.”
So Jo, I miss reading your posts and hope you’re having fun in the sun!!!

Then maybe your rant will have some weight.
You are accusing a local business of a felony yet citing no evidence other than your own assertion.
Whip it out if you got it.

May 20, 2008 at 12:21 am #586997JanSParticipantMy laptop must still think it’s at JanS’s house — gotta fix that :-) Charlabob just returned from my first trip to Illusions Hair Salon, on California (a WSB advertiser) and they are just amazing! Not only do I love the color and cut (thank you, Monica!) but little details about the customer service were amazing. For example, they alerted me to the 2 hour parking limit on the street in front of their place; something I never would have noticed otherwise.
It’s obvious why these folks have been in business for 30 years. They’re definitely the best!

AnonymousInactiveTodd, here’s the link to King County Juror info. Parking info about half way down.
Basically, there are nearby public lots they say are expensive and fill up early. But I think they have earlybird all day specials.
http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/superiorcourt/juror.aspx
They have a few parking spots right next to the courthouse that a bike could probably squeeze in easy enough, but I have a vague memory of them being reserved (?), or at least not all day.

CaduceusMemberWSMom I never even thought that a girl might have done it!
I suppose you’re correct Kayleigh but I don’t think there will ever be a “solution” to graffiti. There will always be kids/people doing it and personally I’d rather look at a picture of a lovely woman with headphones on or “LOVE” vandalized in the city rather then…
“F**K THE POLICE” or a swastika
Kind of how running sneakers, and high heels are both a pair of shoes, but serve different purposes.

AnonymousInactiveHuh? I’ve said nothing but the opposite. Call the police. Call the police. Call the police. Any confusion with that statement? In the mean time you are angry, hostile and calling every one names. Kind of deflects from the topic, which should be about about the dangerousness of over serving and drunk driving. You’ve just managed to piss every one off.
I’ve never been to the Admiral Pub, rarely drink, rarely drive, and NEVER drink and drive.

I’d rather see the artistic and, er, humanistic? tendencies channeled productively…and not have the vandalism reinforced at all.

Really? You mean there aren’t any at all in West Seattle? Tragic.
How would parents feel if childless people posted anti-kid rants in the same vein as the anti-animal rants?
(Yes, I know many of you don’t hate dogs/cats but just wish ________, and that *your* kids are perfectly behaved in public, and that kids are humans and dogs are not.) We get it.

May 19, 2008 at 8:29 pm #624822flowerpetalMemberYou might not want to wait until “the dog looks as though it’s in distress” as it may then be too late. Animal Control officers are stretched thin over our community; by the time she/he arrives the dog may be dead.
