I was at Westwood Target/BN on Saturday around 11 am and someone had left their small dog in the car with all the windows up. I was there at least 1/2 hour and the car was still there when I left. It was already quite warm at that point.

Are some people so stupid that they don’t know how little time it takes for a car to heat up when it’s only about 65 degrees out, much less 80 or 90?? A cracked window doesn’t help poor Fido either.

I don’t even like dogs that much, but it saddens me to see such stupidity (that’s what it is, I can’t sugar coat this). Don’t bring your dog(s) with you if you have to leave them in the car for even 5 minutes if it’s over 70. geez.

I’m with cruiser, did you call Seattle Animal Control?

Just commenting on it here doesn’t really handle the situation.

I did not do anything because I was in a hurry (and it was hot outside); I’m just making a general comment that people shouldn’t bring their dogs with them on hot days and leave them in the car so I used this as a recent example. Maybe someone who practices this stupid behavior will read my orginal post and recognize themselves and not do it anymore.

Animal Control’s number is: Seattle Animal Shelter at (206) 386-PETS (7387). The Shelter released a news advisory last Wednesday about this topic and how damaging it can be. I wouldn’t hesitate to call; and I am putting that number in my cell phone’s directory.

well, i just found this link that has printable flyers you can leave on the windshields for the offenders: http://www.seattle.gov/animalshelter/otherlik.htm

there is also a phone number to call if you see a dog in a car. next time i’ll call and i hope the dog owner gets fined.

I’m going to print out fliers to leave on any offender’s car…if someone finds their dog is important enough to tote around with them for errands, then they should never be leaving it in the car on a warm day. That’s just irresponsible. I’ll be calling the animal shelter if the dog looks as though it’s in distress too.

You might not want to wait until “the dog looks as though it’s in distress” as it may then be too late. Animal Control officers are stretched thin over our community; by the time she/he arrives the dog may be dead.

We have called 911 for an animal in distress call before. People had a dog totally closed up in their car in the heat. Just call it in and let the police break into their car. They get in, take the dog, then fine the CRAP out of the person who owns the car. They can also put them in jail.

Sorry… no room in my heart for people who do that.
