charlabobParticipantThe California Supreme Court just overturned a voter-approved initiative banning gay marriage. There is another initiative on the ballot in November, but between now and then same-sex marriage is legal in California — along with Massachusetts.

JenVMemberBig news, Charla! Thanks for sharing! I will never understand how a same sex couple being married has any effect on an opposite sex couple.
May 15, 2008 at 10:30 pm #624628
JoBParticipantunfortunately… they will just appeal it to the supreme court.. and right now that doesn’t look so good.
I agree. there is no reason why same sex couples should not have the same rights and protections of marriage as heterosexuals…

Tonya42MemberI hate seeing the government stick their nose where it doesn’t belong but in this case it may have been the wise thing to do, making it legal is the fair thing to do.
May 16, 2008 at 3:30 am #624630
charlabobParticipantT42, I couldn’t agree more. this is indeed an area in which the government should not be; since it persists in being there, what the court did is necessary and fair.
In my ideal world, the default for everyone who wants some kind of legal binding is *civil unions* and any and all religions can attach whatever strings they want and call them marriage or Irving. Since that will happen shortly *after* pigs levitate, the court did what it needed to do and that’s great news for everyone.

ErikParticipantCharla – I saw a big pig floating through Key arena last year at the roger waters concert.

kParticipantplanning a move back down there at summer’s end and i am thrilled! this should be the norm throughout the nation. europe has already set the tone and we should follow that lead!

ShibaguyzMember“Irving” ROTFLMAO!!
I am now officially no longer fighting for the rights of gay marriage… I am now a proponent of “gay Irving!” LOL
Good lord… that made me snort! Irving… LOL Holy cow!

TheHouseMemberMy dog is part of my family and I consider him a “child”. It should be law that I can claim him as a dependent (his medical bills are more expensive than human bills) and he should receive health benefits just as other children receive.
I’m filing my paperwork today.
Thank you all for paving the way for me to be able to do this!
May 16, 2008 at 2:54 pm #624636
GinaParticipantThe statement about the dog may be ironic exaggeration to make a point, but pets can inherit estates. Remember Leona Helmsley’s “Trouble”?
May 16, 2008 at 3:09 pm #624637
charlabobParticipantThe genesis of “Irving” — Sen. Fred Harris (D-OK) was a Quixotic Democratic candidate for the presidency in the mid-70’s. A reporter asked him, “What do you call a campaign like this where you have no chance <blah blah blah blah>…what do you call it? hmmm???” Fred said, “I call it Irving.” Since then, Irving has been an integral part of my life as a smart-ass (MLASA).
Shibaguys, when you have a ceremony to get Irvinged, may I please be one of the officiants? I’m sure my Universal Life ordination covers it. :-)

rs261MemberI know this is what you’re looking for …House, how does your dog have anything to do with marriage, and paving the way for it?
Not that I would mind claiming my 2 dogs 2 cats and a turtle as dependents…that would rock!
May 16, 2008 at 3:46 pm #624639
JenVMemberrs261, don’t feed the troll. he’s only trying to get people riled up. ignore him.
May 16, 2008 at 3:56 pm #624640
rs261MemberI’d really like to hear how something deemed a “human rights violation” has any effect on canines, or felines… If he can convince me, I’d bestow the highest honorary title of “master of irrefutable logic” on him.

Wow, how crude and obnoxious..
May 16, 2008 at 5:17 pm #624642
JenVMemberoh, wow, Tonya42..that really hurts my little feelings. I think I’ll go sit in the corner and cry now.
May 16, 2008 at 5:32 pm #624643
ShibaguyzMemberTheHouse is simply using the old, outdated, tired, worn out, conservative, Republican, fundamentalist argument that my partner and I are no better than and have no more human rights than his animals when it comes to marriage, health care benefits, or the right to hospital visitation, etc.
It makes total sense, doesn’t it, that you should compare these human rights on the same level as your pets?? (sarcasm)
This is an inflammatory comment used in the arguments of opponents of the human rights of gay people to confuse those less educated and less able to follow and logical train of thought. If you tell someone that giving gay people the same rights the rest of the human population has, then you are just leading us down a path that will allow some guy down the street to marry his dog and claim them on his health insurance.
Not only is it insulting to constantly hear our right compared to those of people’s pet (although mine have pretty high placement in the pecking order around here! LOL), it is an insult to the intelligence of everyone having a conversation to bring in such dated material. Get something fresh and bring it to the table or stay home.
If you don’t want gay people to get married, then don’t marry one. If you don’t like gay people, stay locked in your house. If you don’t want us to have human rights, move someplace where they still kill us for being gay. It’s really that simple. Otherwise, don’t hide behind your worn out, lame arguments that hold no water in the face of intelligence.
Oh, and Tonya42, THAT is what JenV was refering to as “feeding the troll.” Sometimes people find it best to not get involved in arguments with folks who only throw out that kind of post to get everyone fighting. In forums, those are commonly known as “trolls” and “feeding them” is doing what I just did. So, JenV was being neither rude nor obnoxious.
There’s my rant on the subject. I’m done now…
May 16, 2008 at 5:47 pm #624644
KayleighMemberIf I compared you to my furbabies, Shibaguy, it would be a complement for sure. ;-)
But you said it very well. Give ’em 5-10 years, and the conservatives will realize they were wrong on *this* human rights issue, just as they were wrong on civil rights.
May 16, 2008 at 5:50 pm #624645
rs261MemberI didnt take offense to JenV, and in general dont need other people defending me. I’m all for gay marriage, and am disappointed that Obama and McCain dont support it (the whole civil union thing to me is a step in the right direction but not far enough in my opinion). I’m happily married, why cant everyone be if they want?
I’d just really like to hear how House can link pets being dependents to Human rights….
Oh, and I’ll feed the trolls all I want. I often head over to freemont and stuff carrots in the bridge trolls mouth, I think he likes them, they’re never there when I go back!

Oh good, look for some manners when you get there.
Shibazguy – Thanks for the additional insight into the mind of someone who tries to keep someone else out of the conversation but it still doesn’t make sense.

cruiserMemberI’m all for gay marriage why shouldn’t they be as miserable as the rest of us:)

charlabobParticipantAnd I want you to know that if *anyone* else wants to get Irvinged, I’m here for you — gay, straight….I’m in. My Universal Life cert applies universally.
BTW, Shibas, that’s probably the most eloquent explanations I’ve read — thank you for posting it. (I promise full attribution when I pass it along, as I most certainly will.)

JenVMemberamen to what charlabob said, Shibaguyz.
