Looking for a good Chinese restaurant. Needs to have vegetarian options, no MSG and open on Sundays. Not in WS ok, we’re willing to travel.

    Thanks all!

We just went to Happy Garden in Burien last week, which we really liked. It got several good reviews on yelp.com, which is why we went there. You can read the reviews at http://tinyurl.com/68hb7n

It’s at 14301 Ambaum. It reminded me more of chinese food I would get back in NYC, which is probably why I liked it.

I like Ho-Win on California and Juneau. I have eaten there many times and really enjoy their food.

Jen…Go to Bamboo Garden on Roy St. by Seattle Center…totally vegetarian, and yummy…when it says beef or chicken on the menu, it’s still vegetarian..

Jan- been there and love it. However, this is for my Dad’s b-day, and he wants “real Chinese” (ie: with meat) we will just have some vegetarians in the party. But Bamboo Garden gets my vote!

Schezuan Chef in Bellevue has excellent Chinese food, but I can’t confirm the use of MSG, although I’m guessing they don’t. They have a huge menu, great reviews from the Seattle Times and plenty of options to suit those who crave either authentic Chinese food or the American version. This place satisfies my simpleton parents who hate anything spicy and their kids, who are willing to try anything authentic. If you go there on the weekend, it’s full of Chinese people so you know it’s good and worth the 15 mile drive from WS. Seven Stars Pepper in the ID is also a good option, given the owners of Schezuan Chef opened that place years ago.

CMP…do your “simpleton” parent’s read this blog? lol..if so, they now know what you think about them and their Chinese food choices – lol….

Definitely not Jan…my Mom probably wouldn’t even know how to find this blog! Plus they live in Bellevue so it’s not exactly appliable to them. They grew up in Chicago and like their comfort food, nothing too out there. Don’t let that discourage anyone from trying out this restaurant though…it’s good stuff! I think it’s better than Lee’s Asian, which I’m surprised to see has not gotten any mention here, although the ambiance leaves much to be desired.

I just got back from Ho-Win – all this talk of chinese food made me hungry. Their menu does not mention MSG, and I never ask since I don’t have a sensitivity to it. So I would call to ask. Their website is http://ho-win.cwok.com/index.html

Seven Stars Pepper in the ID (Jackson and 12th, I think) is the best Chinese I’ve had in Seattle. Very authentic (it’s full of Chinese people). Shanghai Garden in the ID is also excellent. Both places are pretty large and so could accommodate a large group. Nothing I’ve had in West Seattle comes close (and I’ve had both Ho-Win and Lee’s Asian).

I am not sure if Ho-Win uses MSG but I am sure you can ask for them not to use any MSG.

I recently found out I am allergic to MSG- or at least extremely sensitive- I break out in itching, red face, and get an immediate headache…and it seems like some places almost see it as an insult when I ask if they use it. Thanks all for your suggestions – I have a lot to work with now!

I stumbled across a great International District restaurant review site http://msg150.com/ which was also mentioned by the PI this week.

Won’t help find a place here in Seattle but it’s a fun read and a good resource if you’re going across the Bridge.
