Topic: Democratic Disappointments
in forum PoliticsRainyDay1235Member#1. Obama is not in our faces enough. I know the debates are coming, but he needs to make face time on prime time…NOW.
#2. Biden’s recent comments that Hillary “might have been a better pick than me.”
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/biden-hillary-a.html
WTF? I might agree with him, but HE WAS PICKED. He needs to shut up and do his job.
#3. Is any action being done to PROMOTE the voter fraud that is going on. Any education? Any response?

charlabobParticipantJenny, I’m sorry….it’s NUCLEAR and that’s how it’s spelled. The right may have succeeded in redefining the Democratic Party, but I’ll be damned if they’ll get away with polluting a simple adjective :-).
Alternative technology will come online when corporatists find a way to control and make money on it. See T-Boone Pickens wind-farm ads. He’s even refused to finance the effort to “swift boat” Obama — and he was a main contributor to the Kerry effort. Apparently that would get in the way of his good guy populist affect.
Nothing you said addresses the question of why the oil companies don’t drill on their available land.

WSratsinacageMemberI have heard about Rite Aid too. I’ve been going there for years but after I heard it was haunted, I asked some of the people that work there if they have experienced anything out of the ordinary. Everyone I talked to said, “Well, it’s definately haunted..” but just stories of hearing banging and things like the water being turned on, etc..
With WS being around a 100 years old, there just have to be some great stories out there. I wonder what may have happened at the Rite Aid location in the past or at other businesses and homes? Thanks in advance for your input.

charlabobParticipantCheck out Carly Fiorino (defrocked CEO of HP) who basically says, hell, no!, when asked if Palin could run a large American corporation. “But that’s not the job she’s running for.” Stunning .. simply stunning! These people will defend anything.
September 16, 2008 at 7:50 pm #639137In reply to: Who really believes drilling is the answer.
JennyMember> Drill baby Drill is absurd. Holding on to the past will only get us further in debt and lower our standard to living.
IMO in the very long run that’s true, and I am looking forward to seeing lots of plugin hybrids a decade or two from now. But nobody seriously believes that solar, wind, etc. will generate enough energy quickly enough to make a difference within the next decade.
Heck, even new nucular plants will probably take over a decade to come online because of all you greenies siccing armies of lawyers & regulators in its way. Not to mention all the opposition that has grown over windfarms by… well, no need to get into that.
The point is, THERE ARE NO MAGIC BULLETS. But meanwhile the economy needs energy to survive. For the next decade it’s going to have to be drill baby drill. There’s simply no getting around that.
Hoping that exotic new technologies will soon come online in mass quantities, and without NIMBYs trying to slow them down at every step of the way, is not an option.
September 16, 2008 at 7:49 pm #638978In reply to: What is truly important?
villagegreenMember“If you are willing to recognize as part of something like the Democratic party, why can’t you recognize yourself as a conscious human being, much like people who recognize with the Republican party who are also conscious human beings?”
IMO, reading political postings on a blog gives a very one dimensional aspect of the posters as human beings. Just because someone ‘laughs’ at Republicans online doesn’t mean they are not friends with Republicans in ‘real’ life. I know I have friends who are Republicans and they have many redeeming qualities as human beings. We just choose not to discuss politics around each other. I don’t see belonging to a specific group and also identifying with humanity as a whole as mutually exclusive.
As for what’s ‘truly important,’ I believe that one’s objective in life should be to live their life as they see fit (gaining the most personal happiness) while simultaneously making sure that their decisions and actions do not adversely affect others. I realize that NOT taking action in certain cases can adversely affect others and that is where an individual has to strike a balance between ‘saving the world’ and looking out for themselves.
I don’t begrudge a person who isn’t involved in charities, volunteering, or other forms of social service, but I do have an issue with individuals who don’t consciously think about the consequences that their actions may have on others while blithely doing whatever makes them happy.
The issue of non-action adversely affecting others is where I fail to see how it is conscienable to not vote in this election when you know the very real consequences that are at stake for your fellow humanity. If you believe that McCain is pro war (as you’ve stated in the past), then you must believe that if he is elected more people in the world will die in war than if Obama is elected. All else being equal, I find it unconscienable to not vote at all solely based on some self-satisfied moral high ground that supposedly justifies not voing for the lesser of two evils.

September 16, 2008 at 7:43 pm #639220In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
RainyDay1235MemberBut back to topic, I agree. In fact I think McCain is simply TOO OLD to be president. I think the age limit should be decreased. Sorry, it’s human nature. We only live so long on average. His history is especially iffy. I swear if it were someone on the Dem side – I would have it on the brain as well.
She has already stated “she is ready to be president” if need be, and McCain is spending more time talking about Palin than himself during speeches now. It’s very odd. And yes, very relevant.
Supposedly her “planned focus” (per McCain) will be on US oil and energy policy. I think the fact that she is coming from “drill, baby, drill” mentality is frighteningly relevant.

AnonymousInactiveThe other examples cited protect public health or safety. ie, seatbelts, helmets. You can not dispute the facts showing these measures save lives. It is the job of government to protect the welfare of it’s citizens.
I think we should use our own bags. It’s a good idea. It would reduce trash. It would help the environment. We know they never biodegrade. It could possibly protect sea life. All noble ideals.
I don’t think it should be mandatory without a vote. It does not fall under a public safety umbrella. And all these good intentions aside, if we really cared about the environment, we’d ban cars, not bags.
Yes, you have to start somewhere. That’s where a vote comes in. It is an opinion about what the priority should be. I’d rather see hard un-recyclable plastic packaging banned way before a product which can be properly recycled, if we chose to.
September 16, 2008 at 7:39 pm #637703In reply to: Is anyone else worried about voter fraud in Nov?
JennyMemberAnd this in from Michigan…
Bad voter applications found
Clerks see fraudulent, duplicate forms from group
Several municipal clerks across the state are reporting fraudulent and duplicate voter registration applications, most of them from a nationwide community activist group working to help low- and moderate-income families.
The majority of the problem applications are coming from the group ACORN, Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has a large voter registration program among its many social service programs. ACORN’s Michigan branch, based in Detroit, has enrolled 200,000 voters statewide in recent months, mostly with the use of paid, part-time employees.
“There appears to be a sizeable number of duplicate and fraudulent applications,” said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State’s Office. “And it appears to be widespread.”

CMPParticipantLOL…I’m going to pick up my new car tomorrow and hopefully I’ll remember to ask Chaplin’s to take off their license plate frame now! I bought my old car in Kansas and the Honda dealer put a decal on the back that never budged after twelve years, but it never bothered me, like it does some people.

SueParticipantThanks, FullTilt – I agree with you on this one. I’ve been keeping track of my own bag consumption. I haven’t taken a bag of any kind from any store for at least 3 months now, and even before that for the past year I’ve probably taken less than a dozen bags from a store. It’s really not that hard. I was out at the North Bend outlets this weekend and people were surprised that we had our own bags and kept remarking on it as we pulled them out. They’re not just for groceries.

JoBParticipantIt seems there is media interest in West Seattle reactions to Tedd Tripps upcoming event at Mars Hill church.
if there is anyone who is willing to talk with the media about how they personally feel about the event.. i would appreciate it if you contact me at joanne@brayden.org.
since i seem to be organizing the West Seattle effort at protest, i have been the local contact, but as engaging as i am to talk with, i am sure they would appreciate more voices… both pro and con. whether you feel strongly or not.
You do not have to be the victim of abuse to have an opinion on spanking enforced submission as the primary tool for child discipline. In fact, i am not entirely sure being a victim adds weight to your opinion.

JennyMemberJust for fun, check out this RCP page that lists all the presidential polls that have reported the totals for Ralph Nader & Bob Barr:
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/us/obama_vs_mccain_with_barr_nader-957.html
These polls show McCain up by +2.0 over Obama, which is close to what the horse race polls say. They show Nader at 2.0% & Barr at 1.4%.
RCP doesn’t show the running graph of historical RCP averages for these polls like they do in the horse race pages, but it does show Nader got 6% in three CNN polls in June/July, with an average of maybe 4%. Barr got one 6% from Rasmussen in May, mostly getting 2/3/4’s in June/July. Both of them started fading in August, and then dropped to where they are now at the beginning of September.

September 16, 2008 at 6:43 pm #639061In reply to: The Election: Inside Baseball
JennyMemberRealClearPolitics Average for the last few days:
POPULAR VOTE:
09/08 - McP +2.9
09/10 - McP +2.2
09/11 - McP +2.5
09/13 - McP +2.4
09/15 - McP +1.6
09/16 - McP +1.3In the Electoral College, McP is still up by +20. (No change since 9/14.)
Below are the toss-ups, plus the leaners, in order of the latest state polls according to RCP. The ones whose polls are most out of date should be the most due for a new poll to come out.
LEANING McCAIN. If one of these states becomes a toss-up, McCain loses their EVs; Obama has stopped the bleeding:
IN 8/30 11
MT 9/08 3
ND 9/08 3
MO 9/11 11
FL 9/14 27TOSS-UPS. Either campaign could change their EVs by moving a state from this category into Leading XXX:
NM 9/08 5
NH 9/09 4
MI 9/10 17
NV 9/11 5
MN 9/12 10
PA 9/14 21
OH 9/14 20
VA 9/14 13
CO 9/14 9LEANING OBAMA. If one of these states becomes a toss-up, Obama loses their EVs; the bleeding continues:
WI 9/07 10
OR 8/09 7
WA 9/10 11
IA 9/10 7
NJ 9/14 15There have been several polls from the battleground states since my last listing, but it didn’t look like there was much movement in any of them. As you can see, 4 out of the 9 tossup states had polls reported on 9/14 (Sunday) – and some of these had more than one.
So it still looks like any movement on the EV front should come from those states that are due for new polls to get reported: Indiana, Montana, N. Dakota, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, & Oregon. Since these older polls are from before Palin-o-mania caught hold, I’d expect McP to gain another 10-20 EVs in the next week. But since the daily popular vote polls are drifting back down, it’s possible that could represent McP’s high-water mark at least until the debates start happening.
miwsParticipantJo, one of the PT’s was just here, saying she was working on her report to the Dr, and asking what, if anything I might have trouble doing at home. Essentially, what is keeping me here. Since I’m doing so well, maybe soon?? *wishful thinking smilie*

September 16, 2008 at 5:56 pm #639161In reply to: 20-cent bag fee will not take effect Jan 1
RSMemberThank you, FullTilt!! My sentiments exactly. As a recent transplant, I find the “we have to vote on everything” mentality a little bizarre. That’s WHY I pay attention and vote in the elections- so that good people get into office and make good choices. If they do something really asinine, we recall them or vote them out of office in the next election. The bag tax whining doesn’t make sense to me, even the argument that there are other things the city could spend their money on trying to fix. That’s true on first glance, but the city’s resources are always going to be fungible and there’s always going to be something better they *could* be doing. Seems like a path to complete inaction and paralyzed government to me!
September 16, 2008 at 5:52 pm #639215In reply to: What makes Sarah Palin relevant?
WSMomParticipantThank you Jan, Ms. Ensler’s words resonate the indignation I feel when pondering Palin as McCain’s choice for running mate. I’m ashamed and saddened for our country.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/15/business/marketwatch/main4448337.shtml
“The Sarah Palin Phenomenon Is Doomed
But it’s not because of her lack of foreign policy experience or her deer-in-the-headlights look during part of her interview last week with ABC’s Charles Gibson.
The primary reason why the Palin bubble will burst is that the media will decide that they are bored with her. They’ll need to move to shine a light on a fresh issue or individual.”
One good thing that may come from yesterdays financial meltdown is the hope that the presidential campaign will get back to the business of talking about VITAL ISSUES, instead of the vapid Ms. Palin.

charlabobParticipantOne of the most powerful writers of a new generation called it quits Friday. David Foster Wallace is a powerful force in literature and nonfiction.
In 2000 he spent a week on the bus and wrote this about McCain, for Rolling Stone. Among other things, it tells us something about how different McCain is now, and how much he stays the same. NB, the article is long and self-indulgent and riveting; I’m posting for the politics junkies and for the fans of literature, who are still in mourning.
